    Simple Questions - January 27, 2021

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

I don’t understand the hate for people who get 3090s. Why do people care about where you spend your money, if you are buying a 3090 you clearly aren’t doing a budget build and you are splurging.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 09:17 PM PST

Just tons of people saying they should have gotten the 3080 and complaining about the price to performance ratio. The 3080 is super hard to find and is already above the 1000$ market and i would imagine it goes up again before the super. I just don't get why under so many build posts people are crapping on the 3090. Mine works amazing and at this point i paid only a couple hundred more bucks then a 3080 is priced for so much less hassle

How to not do your first build. (step by step tutorial)

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 07:41 AM PST

    1. Be a first time builder and don't know anything about budgeting and building within that budget.

    2. Buy a cpu about 60-70% of your budget.(in my case a ryzen 5 3600)

    3. Blow the rest of the budget on mobo and casing and everything else.

    4. Realise that the ryzen 5 3600 doesn't come with integrated graphics and you can't actually get any video output with the Frankensteinein monster you've created.

    5. Realise that GPU prices are so high rn that you cant even afford a lower end GPU.

    6. Stare at your case at night and dream about its glory when its complete.

Welcome to the life of a first time dumbass builder who thought he was smart af building his own new rig.

    Upgrading my pre-built PC :)

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 12:06 PM PST

Need help!! Basically I ordered an already built gaming PC about a year ago, but I havent used it much but getting back into it, but higher quality PC Games are lagging and being quite slow, which out of these would you recommend me upgrading?

Motherboard: ASUSTek Computer Inc, Prime A320M-K

Processor: AMD Athlon X4 950 Quad Core Processor- 3.50GHz

    RAM: 8.00 Gb

Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti

When googling it, it seemed a Ryzen Processor and better graphics card is the best option? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Is this normal performance?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 11:52 AM PST

I recently bought a 2080 ti off of craigslist and it seems to be performing really poorly (see screenshots). I contacted the guy on craigslist asking if he had issues with the card, and when I explained to him that I tried overclocking to fix performance he jumped on that saying that he would no longer accept a refund. He claims there was never an issue - is this true??? I'm kind of broke rn and needed this computer for college so I'm really bummed out about this, please any advice is helpful.

    Friends says PSU isn't compatible?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 10:38 AM PST

These are the main components of my setup:

    • RX 480 8GB
    • RYZEN 5 3600
    • B450M GAMING PLUS
    • XPG Z1 2x8GB DDR4
    • Antec 750w High Current Gamer Bronze

I want to replace my current PSU with the RM750W Gold and eventually my GPU with a 3060Ti. My friend however says that the PSU I want wont either support it, or come with the necessary cables to connect everything together. The Q&A however, on Amazon says everything you could need comes with the RM750W. Can I buy the PSU and be set? Or will I have to buy it, buy some cable splitters or look for a different PSU altogether?

Help me cut corners on this ~1500€ build

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 10:08 AM PST

    Hello guys,
I need a new PC soon and I threw together a rough list of parts. I'm really unsure of it all so I hope to find some answers here.
First of all, the CPU. Prices are inflated, is the R7-3700x more viable right now?
For the 5600x, it's suggested to use a different cooler than the stock one, right?
I picked parts that I think go well together but I have no idea if there are cheaper alternatives for those (or which one's the best bang for the buck, etc). I'm going for a black/white theme if that matters.

    PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor €354.95 @ Computeruniverse
CPU Cooler Noctua NH-U12S chromax.black 55 CFM CPU Cooler €69.90 @ Amazon Deutschland
Motherboard MSI MPG B550 GAMING PLUS ATX AM4 Motherboard €139.90 @ ARLT
    Memory G.Skill Ripjaws V 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory €186.53 @ Computeruniverse
Case Fractal Design Meshify C ATX Mid Tower Case €99.89 @ Alternate
Power Supply Corsair RM (2019) 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply €121.89 @ Alternate
    Storage I have it €0
    Video Card Gotta be a 3070 (I'd love a 3080 tho) € no idea
    Total without GPU €973.06

With the GPU I want to stay below 1500€, so there's nothing I can do but wait. I think.
    Thanks!

For those who are considering VR gaming with prescription glasses...

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 09:28 PM PST

There are companies out there that sell 3D-printed lens adapters for all the popular VR headsets so that you can play VR without your glasses on!

It doubles as a lens protector and some VR headsets don't sit well if the user is wearing glasses.

I have a VR headset and i have a scuff on my right VR lens, which is why I'm now looking into getting myself an adapter. I believe that wearing my glasses with the VR headset actually damaged the lens a bit. So this is a good way to protect your $300+ toy.

Wraith Cooler for Ryzen 5 5600X Consensus

    Build questions.

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 12:06 PM PST

I was going to make multiple posts but I'll ask all my questions here. I'd put a pcpartpicker link but most of my parts aren't even on the site.

I'm starting with a pretty much stock HP Pavilion p7-1534 if someone wants more detailed specs. Please don't say "get a new mobo", I'll be fine with this it's my first build I don't need something crazy.

I have 1 stick of 8GB ram in my pc that I'm trying to upgrade, eventually getting get 3 more? But I want to make sure I get the right one. The model number on the current stick is M378B1G73BH0-CK0. Also, what price should I be paying so I know I don't get ripped off.

I plan on upgrading to an A10-5800K and a GTX 1650 "Windforce". My power supply is a PS-5301-02 300W. Will I be safe or do I need a new power supply. I can supply info on drives or other parts if that's important.

Upgrading from A8-5500 to A10-5800K, will the old CoolerMaster CM12V be fine? Will it be cooled enough if I want to overclock?

I also plan on getting a 500GB SSD.

Is there anything else I should be thinking of?

    Thank you.

Looked up some old posts that got me paranoid about my PSU

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 12:06 PM PST

So here's my current build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/26Gq9N

    I just received a newegg combo for a 3070 gpu tax + gigabyte P750GM.

I pulled the trigger on the combo without checking the PSU, but I've wanted a modular PSU upgrade for some years so I figured it was a win-win until I saw the reviews.

I don't want to attempt to use it at this point, but while looking up information about it I came across people making me paranoid about my current PSU's age. Its from 2013, pretty much been overkill for my builds since I bought it and basically been through 2 and some change builds.

Is it probably safe to toss my new GPU in there? Should I look for a new PSU and wait until I get that to install it? I really didn't think about the PSU failing and taking other parts with it at all until I read them posts but I'm not sure if people are just being overzealous. From what I've looked up the TX series was good quality for its time.

Also I've never OC'd my CPU and I was thinking about maybe actually trying to do that. But don't know if that's a good idea to even mess with at this point on the old PSU.

Can you guys rate my build and advice is always welcome :)

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 01:55 PM PST

    Hello lads,

My last custom build PC died after a long 15 years of working.

This old legend was built by my younger brother when he was around 14 or younger and I will never forget how much happiness this PC brought to me and my brother.

    RIP old fella :(

    (moment of silence)

I would like to buy a new PC and made this build (scroll down)

after checking compatibility on pcpartpicker I noticed that I should change my PSU.

Can you guys recommend me a good one for this build and I might be interested in overclocking in the future so I want enough juice for it.

If you guys have tips and recommendations about my build please let me know.

I will thank you every time I'm playing a game without lag.

Please keep in mind that I am a total noob in PC building.

    [PCPartPicker Part List](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/qGtmRT)

    Compatibility Notes

**Note:**The MSI MPG Z490 GAMING PLUS ATX LGA1200 Motherboard has an additional 4-pin ATX power connector but the be quiet! Pure Power 11 CM 700 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply does not. This connector is used to supply additional 12V current to the motherboard. While the system will likely still run without it, higher current demands such as extreme overclocking or large video card current draws may require it.

**Note:**The Patriot Viper Steel 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-4400 CL19 Memory operating voltage of 1.45 V exceeds the Intel Comet Lake CPU recommended maximum of 1.35 V+5% (1.417 V). This memory module may run at a reduced clock rate to meet the 1.35 V voltage recommendation, or may require running at a voltage greater than the Intel recommended maximum.

**Note:**The motherboard M.2 slot #1 shares bandwidth with a SATA 6.0 Gb/s port. When the M.2 slot is populated, one SATA 6.0 Gb/s port is disabled.

**Note:**Some physical dimension restrictions cannot (yet) be automatically checked, such as cpu cooler / RAM clearance with modules using tall heat spreaders.

    1080ti still worth it?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 01:44 PM PST

I currently have a pc without a GPU, I was planning on getting myself a 3080, but surprisingly the stock hasn't returned. My pc currently is a i9-9900k with 16GB at 3200, on the ROG Maximus XI Hero. and I'm pretty much at my limit of not having a GPU, I've waited long enough to buy a pc that can actually do what I want.

    Things I do:

Game at 1080p preferably at max setting (ETS2, Valorant, Minecraft, Destiny 2, Watch dogs, Assassins creed, etc..)

CAD work (Solid works) and 3D Editing (Blender)

and some less intensive things that aren't worth mentioning

    Thanks it advance

Do games on windows drive make a difference as opposed to secondary drive? Do I bother with windows on Sata or NVME?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 01:37 PM PST

Sorry complicated question because I just added NVMe drive to my existing build (side note, they are now the same cost as Sata SSD's, it's insane!).

Windows is on Samsung SSD Sata 850 Evo 250GB - not perfect, but pretty good!

    Just added a games drive 1TB NVMe Internal SSD - Gen3 x4 PCIe 8Gb/s

Is there any benefit to having Windows and games on the same drive? Do I bother migrating Windows to the NVMe , it already boots up in about 5 seconds on the Sata SSD as my bootup is very light.

Obviously regardless I am putting games on the NVMe for them sweeeeet tiny load times.

Just want to ask before I start migrating my games over to the NVMe from my old HDD since the Windows migration tool will wipe it so it'd be a waste of time.

I hope I chose the right flair!

    Thanks!

EDIT: forgot to add, I do like being able to kill windows without wiping games. But not at the cost of performance. If it's negligible then I'd separate.

    FPS cuts in half

    Posted: 27 Jan 2021 01:31 PM PST

    Hello everyone,

I need some help with my monitor setup. I have two monitors and LG Ultragear 27'' 144Hz QHD and a Acer Nitro 24'' 75Hz HD. When I unplug the Acer monitor my FPS goes to around 140 and when I plug it in, it goes to around 70. Everything is set that the LG is my main monitor but it still sits around 70 FPS. Is it a visual bug that it still is 140FPS but that it says 70 or did I do somehting wrong?

    Help would be very welcome!

    Ultrawide Monitor Help.

So I'm looking into purchasing a new ultrawide monitor. Just to give a quick background, I usually play FPS games such as Overwatch, Rainbow Six, Apex, Valorant, and Warzone (mostly Warzone) and occasionally play stuff like Civ6, RDR2, and HZD.

The three monitors that I've had my eye on lately are the Asus PG35VQ, Acer X35, and LG 38GL950. The first two being 1440p, HDR1000, and VA, while the latter is 1600p, HDR400, and IPS. Another monitor that I'm considering but isn't released yet is the Acer X34S which is 1440p, HDR400, and IPS.

Is HDR1000 really worth foregoing an IPS panel? Is the framerate loss worth it between 1600p and 1440p? What are your thoughts? Money isn't really a factor, I simply just want the best possible monitor that is currently available (or soon to be available).

    Edit: PC will be 3090 + 5950X

I'm not rich and don't have a lot of money to spend which is more reliable or at least easier to tell if it breaks
