This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    Let me get this straight...

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 07:42 AM PST

GPUs are low on stock for the foreseeable future. CPUs are low on stock for the foreseeable future. A 25% tariff has kicked in, with no real political support for reversal/removal.

I'm still running a 3570k + GTX 970, and I was really looking forward to building a new PC this year. Will I really need to wait until ~2022 to find decent deals? I don't live near a microcenter, and don't have time to wait around for "stock drops."

Autonomous’ ErgoChair or 2021 DXRACER P SERIES GAMING

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 03:22 AM PST

I am currently looking for a chair since I am going to be working from home and I am not sure what to get. These two are the top choices I have and within the budget.

Anyone have any opinion or experience with either of these chairs? Very open to suggestions! Thank you!

Is there even any benefit from keeping your CPU at low temperatures?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 10:34 AM PST

Just curious because generally in PC tech communities there is usually big devotion to keeping low temps. Big coolers, custom liquid loops, you name it. People going to bragging fights whose CPU runs the coolest. Even I like to see that my 5600x idles at 27-28 Celcius and only goes up to 60 in stress.

But... kinda why though? As far as I know (and I definitely can be wrong here) running cooler:

    1. Does not impact performance - aside from thermal throttling but that happens at very high temps above 90 or even 100 degrees.

    2. Does not prolong CPU's life in numbers that matter. Comparing CPU running at 30 degrees and running at 80 degrees first one maybe will live 15 years and second one 14 years. Long past obvious need to upgrade time.

So as long as your CPU isn't going to dangerous territory (90-100) it literally doesn't matter. And even then it will prevent any damage by dumping clock and eventually shutting off.

Just never thought about it and it hit me today that a lot of these fights are virtually for nothing but pure meaningless numbers. Or am I missing something here?

EDIT: Obvious use case when it matters is extreme, like really extreme to break the records overclocking. And second one I can think of are laptops where indeed sometimes every one degree can matter.

Want to upgrade my RAM but not sure which way I should go with

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 12:38 PM PST

    Hello there,

First of all I'd say I don't have much money but I also want to make a purchase that kinda helps me in the long run.

I bought my PC back in 2015 and right now I am trying to slowly upgrade it. I bought SSD like a year ago and finally been able to upgrade to GTX 1650S from GTX950.Now If I can manage to sell GTX950 for 2nd hand I want to get some more RAM. But I just couldnt make my mind and not really good with that "dual channel" stuff.

    I got 3 options in my mind;

1- Keep this 8gigs, buy 2 more 8gigs and have it 24gigs total (not sure how the dual channel will work with that 3 slots).

    2- Sell this 8gigs, buy 2 x 8gigs and go with it. 16gigs total.

3- Just buy same as the one I have and go with 16 gigs total.

Also from the looks of it my CPU can only run 2133mhz, which my MoBo's max as well and I am aware I have 2400 and not using it with full potential. There wasnt really a price difference between 2133 and 2400 models so I went with 2400 minding I might upgrade in future (but didnt know prices will skyrocket where I live)

    Any suggestions?

If you upgraded your ram don't forget to reset the BIOS

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 11:21 AM PST

When I built my pc I got a 8gb stick of ram because I was on a limited budget. I added a 16gb stick about 3 days ago. The performance in GTA V went from almost 100 fps to 20 fps after the upgrade. And I also got really slow world loading.

I knew that it had to be the ram, so I tried each stick individually, at different speeds and in different slots.

    The performance was still 20fps.

I said fuck it and reseted the BIOS.

Now It works as it should with both sicks in.

Conclusion: Reset your BIOS once in a while

Is this a good deal from a price to performance standpoint?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 01:47 PM PST

I'm looking to upgrade from my i7-4790k, it's served me well but I just need a few more horses these days. I'm talking with someone locally who's willing to sell me his used i7-9700k for $150 (usd). I occasionally edit video in Resolve, and game pretty regularly, but nothing super new or demanding (No CP2077 or MS FlightSim2020). And I'm pairing it with my RX5700 for context. Basically I'm just wondering if this is a good upgrade from a price to performance standpoint, or am I better off going with something else? I see Ryzen 3600's go for 170 openbox at the local MicroCenter every now and then.

TLDR: Is the 9700k the best value I could get for $150?

Gaming monitor help! I want to buy my bf new monitors for Valentine’s Day but I have no idea of building a computer or even gaming stuff.

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 01:42 PM PST

Hey all! I want to get my bf new computer monitors for Valentine's Day. I have no clue of which ones are good or where to even start. All I know is that right now he has a Sceptre monitors but he hates them. He doesn't want them to be 4K since the sceptre ones are 4K. Uhh he plays league of legends, rust, Diablo 2 I think.

[CPU Cooler] ARCTIC Freezer 34 vs DEEP COOL GAMMAXX 400 V2

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 01:41 PM PST

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600

    ARCTIC Freezer 34 : ARCTIC Freezer 34 CPU Cooler (ACFRE00052A) - PCPartPicker

    DEEP COOL GAMMAXX 400 V2 : Deepcool GAMMAXX 400 V2 64.5 CFM CPU Cooler (DP-MCH4-GMX400V2-RD) - PCPartPicker

Both Coolers are prized about the same and are very similar in all other specs too.

Which Cooler is the better choice (for overclocking aswell)?

So I have my graphics card, what next?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 01:00 PM PST

I held off on buying any other parts until I got GPU and CPU sorted. But today I got myself a 3070 and a 5800X. I want to get the rest in as soon as possible so I can get to building but I don't know how to make that decision.

How to I select a motherboard? I'd like to get the most out of my other components but idk where this can go wrong? I'd like wifi, is it best to get a board with integrated wifi?

How do I select a power supply? Do I just need to look at the power of the GPU?

Is there any benefit to getting 32gb of RAM rather than 16gb?

Is there anything to worry about with SSDs or should a 1TB samsung be fine?

    Thanks in advance!

    Extremely slow SSD speed

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 12:41 PM PST

    Hello everyone,

I need help troubleshooting my SSD. Since january 15th my pc became very slow. Restart, shutdown, opening applications, loading stuff in games, pretty much everything thats related to SSD is now extremely slow. I was checking in Task Manager whenever i try to do something SSD sits at 100% and write/read speed is very slow ( it can go to even 200 kb/s), ms aswell is very high. I have used this PC for about year and few months and everything was fine. What a suspected is it maybe has something to do with latest windows update ( january 2021 cumulative update) because this problem began on 15th but on 14th january something weird happened. New update automatically installed and at the end of the day i clicked shut down and update, but my computer restarted instead, and basically at the part where windows boots and it says that its installing/finishing updates, pc just turned off at that point. Next day problem started, and i'm wondering if the update had installed propertly. I also don't know is it safe to just uninstall latest update and see if it helps. I also installed optional update, windows 10 version 20H2 but that didnt do anything.

I tried running sfx and dimm comands and although the first time i ranned sfx it said it found a corrupt file and fixed it, problem obviously wasn't fixed.

Another weird thing is, if i hold power button and force shutdown and start pc again, ssd returns to normal speeds(although i still think its not exatcly smooth as it was), but after few days, it just throttles and becomes slow.

    Help would be very appreciated.

    PC specs:

    i5 9400f

    MB: ASUS ROG b-360-g gaming

    gtx 1660 ti

SSD: Adata SU650 512GB ( at one point i did almost filled up space, but i cleaned it and right now there is 210gb free)

Let me know if there is anything else i need to write.

PS: This is my first post, sorry if i did something wrong.

    Hello everyone,

I am building my second pc after 8 years. And that first one was assembled by somebody else. Altho I kinda know what I am looking at I am not 100% sure about my build. Build thein link below:

Case power button not connected/working, help!

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 06:42 AM PST

Disclaimer: I bought this PC from some dude, didn't build it, probably got absolutely swindled, don't know shit about PCs apart from basic stuff.

    https://ibb.co/mCn7JHd

Recently my power button on my case stopped working, the reset button works and the rest of the PC is fine (can turn it on w/ mobo button). I opened it up and something here just looks wrong (2 pins but only one wire connected) but I don't know how I'd even begin to fix it nor what it's meant to look like - Googling has not helped.

It's the Gigabyte UD3H-z77x mobo and Azza Celesta 340 case, if that helps.

Thanks in advance! And please don't flame me for being dumb.

From one 1070 to two 1070s for blender. Didn't plan for this upgrade. Need some ideas.

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 01:58 PM PST

Her computer is an awesome Lian Li with curated goodies and a 2060. Mine was an afterthought with a 1050ti. I was gifted one 1070. Works great in tandem with 1050ti. Fits. Acquired its brother 1070, now have 2. More powah! However...

I have a cougar mx331 case and an asrock x570m mobo. There is not enough clearance in the second pciex16 to install the second 1070. And this case was probably not meant to be this awesome.

    I could:

    1. DIY a mounting bracket and riser. There is a phanteks universal gpu mount, but then I can still only install 1. A custom setup is janky in this case, and leads me to desire a new case...

    2. A new case doesn't solve my mounting issue (still no mobo clearance) but solves the new airflow problem. I have a ryzen 5 3600 with the stock fan, and currently 4 fans in the case. 2 intake 1.5 out. (I do want an aio for my cpu too) Needs more out. 1070 is consistently the hottest thing in case.

    3. A new Mobo. I hate this Idea, because then I have a spare Mobo, but it's not much more expensive than all of the adapters I need if I did DIY.

    4. All of this is probably putting the cart before the horse. Is a 450 ps even enough without rgb? Lol

In short, I'm looking to optimize at the best price with current components. Mobo is probably certain unless there is a diy hack that's stable. PSU is also likely needed. Sigh... and I should probably get a case...

How would you do it? I'd be willing to spend up to $500, but would prefer closer to $200. (What I really want is some god damn clearance on this "future-proof" mobo I have. HA!)

Choosing an Intel CPU (No GPU Build)

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 01:24 AM PST

First build. I don't plan on doing anything graphics heavy, so want to save money by not buying a dedicated GPU, so that rules out Ryzen (also, the 5000 series availability is yikes right now, and I'm assuming the Intel 10 series is probably going to be a better value than ryzen 3000 + cheap GPU. Am I wrong?)

This PC will mostly be used for Music Production, so will need good single core performance. I'm thinking about going with i9-10900 because I don't care about overclocking, but I've read that the i7-10700k performs better without overclocking.

Am over thinking this? Is the i5-10600 good enough for music production? I'll be pairing with 16gb memory.

Could use a good CPU + Mobo suggestion as well! Cheers!

Core i3-10100 without a discrete video card for streaming?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 09:58 AM PST

Hi, I needed a PC to stream NES and Genesis emulators to YouTube. Moreover, I need to meet the minimum budget. I decided to stick with a Core i3-10100 without using a discrete graphics card.

Will there be enough processor (with its integrated video core) for streaming emulators (NES&Sega Genesis) at least 720p 60 fps? In one place I was told that the processor would not be able to do this without a video card, to which I was surprised. Is he really weak for such a task?

    Thank you!

Any recommendations on PC parts for my next build?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 01:40 PM PST

Hey all, after months of wanting to build my second PC I decided to finally pull the trigger and purchased the following PC parts today:

    i7-9700k 3.6 Ghz

Hyper 212 EVO Universal CPU Cooler

MSI MAG B460M Mortar Wifi Gaming Motherboard (mATX 10th Gen Intel Core, LGA 1200 Socket, DDR4, CFX, Dual M.2 Slots, USB 3.2 Gen 1, 2.5G LAN, DP/HDMI, Wifi 6 Pre-Certified)

    Ripjaws V 32GB (2x16 GB) DDR4-3200

    970 EVO 500 GB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe 3.0 x 4

Barracuda 2TB 7200 RPM SATA III 6Gb/S 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

ThinkStation Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super 8GB GDDR6 Graphics Card

MASTERBOX MB311L ARGB Tempered Glass mATX Mid-Tower

PowerSpec 620 Watt 80 Plus Bronze ATX Semi-Modular Power Supply

I would definitely prefer to have a mATX Mid-tower if possible and am hoping that all these parts are compatible with each other and will make for an easy step. I would also appreciate any advice people have to give on these parts or if I can get better performance for my money.
