    Save me, I just ordered a 3090

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 01:26 AM PST

As the titles says, just ordered a 3090 vision from newegg thanks to a stockdrop notification. The thing is, I am mainly only a gamer. I was wanting a 3080 but by the time I get those notifications they're out of stock, and with the price hikes even some of the 3070s are $800! What do you guys think? Should I cancel the order and be a bit more patient or bite the bullet? On a side note, I typically upgrade/build a new pc every 5 years.

Edit: It's lookin' like a keeper! Thanks for the replys :)

144Hz monitor to go with 60Hz monitor and is curved worth it

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 04:40 AM PST

So I currently have the iiyama monitor which is 60Hz and has been connected to GPU. I am debating getting a new monitor and getting a 144Hz ASUS monitor so I can have a higher refresh rate for gaming on my PC and Xbox in the future. So my Questions are.

If I had 2 monitors, one at 60Hz and 144HZ would this be ok and how best would it be to connect it to my PC. I know there can be an issue as they have different refresh rates.

Is getting a curved monitor better than having a flat one. I've read discussions but I am still unsure.

    Thank you for any help.

Can I put a 1080 ti into my dell inspiron without anything breaking

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 08:13 PM PST

    https://imgur.com/a/sSa72o5

So I currently have a dell inspiron 3650 with an R9 360 that only draw power from pcie. I planned on building a new PC and so far have a psu and a 1080 ti. Can I just leave my dell case open (it's tiny) and plug the 1080ti into the pcie slot, and then just hook up my new psu to the card and just kinda have the new psu only powering the 1080ti? I tried to draw what I had in mind.

Will this work without damaging my computer or graphics card?

Update: PC boots. No display output. I connected my monitor to the motherboard/integrated display output and could not find the card in device manager. Nvidia drivers won't install, says cannot find compatible hardware :(

Update 2: Works! Thanks for the help everyone! Just had to jump the PSU http://imgur.com/a/cguiCqm

Don't talk to me or my son ever again. First build in 7 years!

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 05:15 AM PST

    >>What you came for<<

This is my first build in 7 years, a fairly simple Ryzen 5600x build, inspired by the "Outstanding" build on Logical Increments. Partially funded with crypto! Specs here. More pictures here. Still waiting for 3070s to get in stock though, so I'm using my old 780 for now.

I put my old parts into a SilverStone SG13 to make a SFF HTPF/Steam Link for the TV. Reuse, reduce, recycle. Specs here, I used an Akasa K25 cooler, which isn't on PCPP currently.

    I hope you like!

Friendly tip if your new system won’t post

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 07:56 AM PST

If you get everything installed and then your PC won't turn on or you get weird errors, reseat your processor. Then make sure your cooler isn't too tight. I spent 4 hours last night trying to figure out why new motherboard wouldn't post. I finally got it to post, but then the RAM would only work on 1 slot. After uninstalling everything twice I finally figured out it was all caused by my water block being too tight. I just loosened the screws a bit and it booted up fine. I think a lot of times when people have issues the board might not be DOA, and it could be something like this. It was crazy because I really didn't have it very tight, but apparently it was enough to mess it up. Just a friendly tip.

Flashing the 5809 BIOS on the Asus PRIME X470-PRO to get support for the Ryzen 7 5800X

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 02:57 AM PST

I understand this might be kind of a specific scenario, however I wanted to put this out there in case it will be useful to anybody else.

Yesterday I got and installed the Ryzen 7 5800X, which the X470-PRO supports starting from BIOS version 5809.

My BIOS was still the version the motherboard came with, 4602.

Simply put, trying to flash version 5809 directly won't work: you have to flash version 4804 first, and then flash version 5809.

If you don't, EzFlash will complain saying "Selected file is not a proper BIOS". If you try to flash it through AI Suite 3, the message will be different (something along the lines of "BIOS file does not match the ROM"), but it still won't work.

So the gist of it is: if your current version is 4602, the upgrade path to 5809 is 4602 -> 4804 -> 5809.

If your version is already greater than 4602, you're probably okay.

It's worth noting that, as of this writing, 5809 isn't the latest version, but it's the latest stable version, because 5821 is still in beta.

    Hope this helps :)

First PC build!!! Big thanks to everyone here on buildapc!!!

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 08:47 AM PST

So I've been a console player for about 20 years. I've always thought about building a pc but was pretty hesitant due to me thinking it was much harder than it actually turned out to be. It wasn't as hard as it turned out to be mostly due to everyone here. If I had a question you had an answer, and if it was a generic question I could find it in the search bar where you guys have helped others out.

I just want to say I appreciate you guys not being disrespectful to others even though you may have seen and responded to the same question on multiple occasions. It really speaks volumes to the people here.

I just finished my first pc build ever and it looks great!

It was one hell of a ride, had some problems along the way and had to do a couple of troubleshooting in the process. At the end it was all worth it! Let me know any comments and suggestions for my pc or if I made any mistake, I would really appreciate that!

RTX 3060 is not recognized by the pc

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 12:08 PM PST

Today, I helped my brother building his pc. We both aren't really experts, but we know the basics and I already built a pc before. We had some few minor errors but quickly found solutions for them.

When we turned the pc on, we noticed that there was no output to the monitor. We were 100% sure the problem couldn't be the monitor, so we just tried to put the HDMI cable in the motherboard instead of the graphics card. It worked, and the pc booted into bios.

I wondered why and searched the bios menu, where I found this.

The system isn't recognizing the graphics card, but the RGB lighting and display of the graphics card is working. I already tried installing the newest drivers for the graphics card like an online forum suggested me to do, but the installation just gave me the error "no fitting hardware found" (rough translation from german)

    Here are the parts:

    • AORUS GEFORCE GTX 3060 TI
    • ROG STRIX B360-G GAMING
    • CORE i7-9700K
    • 2 x 8GB 2666MHz DDR4 RAM

Thanks in advance for any help

    edit: grammar and stuff

    Sanity check on a mini-ITX 3400G build

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 01:55 PM PST

Looking to build a small footprint PC for some light gaming / media. I've tried to keep it budget friendly in areas I might upgrade in future (CPU, MB) but I'm having to push past a lot of a negatives I find online - I need a sanity check!

The idea is to run a linux host and run windows on demand in a VM down the line once I manage to find a GPU (5500XT is the current thought but let's see what comes in stock..). I want an integrated GPU so that the linux host can still output to a screen both now and when the GPU is passed through to windows. The games I'd want to run on windows would be recent-ish (2-5 years old) on a 4K60 TV, likely at 1080p.

I mainly want to know a) if this is reasonable (first build!), but also b) can I go to 3600 MHz RAM? Here that upgrade would be less than £5 (link). Even though there would be no benefit now, this would allow me to keep using these sticks in a later build.

    Thanks!

    1070 or 2060?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 09:12 AM PST

So i got lucky and got 1070 and 2060 on pretty sweet deal. Im gonna sell other one. Both are obviously used, but 2060 got 1,5y warranty left. 1070 is over 4y old.

Wich one i keep? I can get almost 100€ profit if i sell 2060, and 50-70€ profit from 1070. My system is I5-4690k (oc) 16gb ram 2x500gb ssd +1070 or 2060

So ny system is pretty basic these days, but im saving for new one with this hustling LOL.

How reliable are the pcpartpicker guides?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 02:38 PM PST

I'm incredibly new to building PCs and on pcpartpicker there are guides that seem to hit every price range. Are these guides good to go or do they need modifications? I am looking at the Modest AMD Gaming Build and the Modest Intel Gaming Build, and would like some insight to whether or not these guides are reliable.

My escape key is "S" for some reason

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 09:46 AM PST

    Title explains it.

This is a frequent thing that happens with my keyboard where it will randomly make my escape key my S key, however my actual S key still functions normally. Usually I just unplug my keyboard and when I plug it back in it goes back to normal however that not the case anymore. I've tried this and restarting my PC but nothing changes and when I press on escape it still types S. Anyone know how to change this?

What is the point of getting a b550/570 board other than overclocking capabilities

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 11:20 AM PST

I've seen a lot of people recommending b550/570 boards but I don't understand why. Ryzen 5000 series is the last series on AM4 and b450 boards are compatible (with bios update) and it is significantly more expensive buying a b550 over a b450. Am I missing something?

Edit: What I'm seeing is pcie gen 4 but if I'm not getting a gen 4 ssd (due to price) and performance is negligible for gpu wouldn't a gen 3 work just as well?

Better to keep a WD Blue 1tb as a boot drive, or buy a $20 Micro Center Inland 120GB SSD?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 10:20 AM PST

EDIT: 1TB WD Blue mechanical HDD, I have 2

I hear bad things about Inland's reliability, but I'd like a little more get-up-and-go out of my PC. If I have to spend much more than 30, I'll just keep my hard drives as boot drives. While I'm booting up Windows I see the HDD light turn on solid and not go off for ~30 seconds, which leads me to believe I don't have a CPU bottleneck or anything else.

Can't find 3080s (like everyone else) so thinking of returning my components and buying prebuilt...

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 12:17 PM PST

    Title; I'm frustrated as I'm sure most folk in my shoes are and really not sure I want to wait until (likely) May at the earliest... I found two PCs on Amazon that aren't going to break the bank but ARE about $700 more than the PC I was building;

    www.amazon.com/Skytech-Siege-3-0-Gaming-Desktop/dp/B08JFHQJ9B

    www.amazon.com/Skytech-Blaze-3-0-Gaming-Desktop/dp/B08JGRSJFZ

Are either of these good? I'm not a hardware guy... I just like playing my games and I really don't know what to look for and the reviews are mostly solid but some folk claim there's excessive fan noise to overheating problems in these. I guess I just need some suggestions... should I wait? Should I return my parts and buy prebuilt? If I do that should I get either of these? Is there some other suggestion on a prebuilt? My gtx980 is showing it's age and it is irritating me by an irrational amount. I want my upgrade but maybe waiting is my best bet?

    New build help

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 09:04 AM PST

Hi everyone, just helped a friend of my build his first PC. Ryzen 5600x asus x570 itx board, my old evga 1070 gpu. When trying to boot the pc it won't post and the keyboard and mouse will not work plugged into the rear I/O or front panel. Mobo is showing a DRAM issue. Tried reseating the ram and unplugging everything and plugging back in. Still won't post. Would appreciate some help on this. Tried a different set of ram as well.

CPU choices for HTPC / 1080p 120Hz machine

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 01:38 PM PST

Here's the background: I'm planning on building a small form factor pc for 4k video playback (should support all codecs), 1080p 120Hz gaming (going to use lossless scaling on a 4k display), and maybe also playing older games at 4k. Other than that I guess it should be able to handle sega saturn emulation. Since I have a spare graphics card lying around I figure I can go ahead and build this now, and wait for lower end 30 series gpus to be available later.

So: With 1080p 120Hz gaming in mind, does it make sense to wait for a lower end cpu in zen 3 or something, or will I be completely fine getting a currently available intel or amd cpu? Any recommendations? I'm planning on getting an ML08 for the case and whatever slim noctua cooler that will fit, so other than cost thermals are going to be important.

TL;DR: need a CPU with good thermals for 1080p 120Hz / 4k video playback / emulation. Should I wait or is there something available now that fits the bill?
