    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

$126 USD for 1080p, 144hz, 1ms, Adaptive Sync. Too good to be true?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 02:16 AM PST

Here is the link, the monitor is $180 Australian after tax which would be around $126 USD Before tax.

    https://www.pcbyte.com.au/store/product/aoc-g2490vx-23-8-va-1ms-144hz-full-hd-freesync-gaming-monitor-tilt-vesa-63175?search=aoc.

144hz, 1080p, adaptive sync for $126. This feels too good to be true. I haven't really found any reviews online because this is a new monitor. I am about to buy this but I'm not sure if there are any shortcuts that AOC took to build this because this feels too good to be true. What are you're guys' thoughts?

Why is everyone getting 32gb of RAM?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 11:58 AM PST

It seems like more than half of all the builds here have 32gb of RAM now. Is it just me or is this the new standard or something? I thought 16gb was more than enough.

I got a Founders Edition RTX 3060 Ti!

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 08:44 AM PST

After over a month of failures, I finally did it! It takes following a Twitter bot and knowing when restocks will happen. For the past 6 weeks, every other Tuesday at 10:30-11:30 Best Buy has restocked a variety of cards, the 8th, the 22nd, and today. Just some tips to let people know it is possible. Before today, the previous Tuesdays were mostly just mistakes on my end like not being signed in. Also, for Best Buy at least, if you have it in your cart and the item says sold out, DON'T DELETE IT FROM YOUR CART. If you keep it in there you will already have it in your cart for next time. Good luck on getting them if you haven't already!

How much should you pay someone to build a pc for you?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 11:51 PM PST

So I'm really not very computer smart, aside from knowing what's spelled out in front of me on the screen I don't know jack. Say I worked out and purchased all the compatible parts for a quality gaming pc and wanted a friend(moms friend from back in the day not mine) who knows what they're doing to put everything together and set it up for me.

How much should should I pay said person? Is it a better to just buy a prebuilt ready to go one?

    Installing Motherboard Drivers?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 01:45 PM PST

I just built my first PC and am attempting to install Windows 10 64-bit via USB, as I don't have an optical drive. When I get into the Windows installation process, almost immediately I receive the error "No device drivers were found. Make sure that the installation media contains the correct drivers, and then click OK." Okay, no big deal. I go and download the .exe drivers for my motherboard (MSI B450 Tomahawk) from their site and save them to a NTFS USB.

When I plug that second USB drive with the MSI drivers into the new computer, though, I attempt to browse for the files, but the USB doesn't appear in the file browser. However, when I search for it in Diskpart, it is in fact online (Disk 1).

Does anyone know how I can access and install these drivers so that I can get Windows 10 on this computer? Thanks for helping this noob out.

So how much of a difference would this jump really be? I would assume FPS increase, but is it ACTUALLY worth it. I wanna upgrade and wondering on people's opinion on this.

    Case fans not spinning

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 12:53 PM PST

So I finished setting up my first ever build and I'm pleased to say it all went mostly smoothly as I managed to get it to boot. However, I've ran into a small issue.

I have three front intake fans, an intake and exhaust at the top of the case and a rear exhaust fan.

The only fans that spin are the bottom two front intake fans. All other fans are stationary. I checked the BIOS and it shows a similar RPM for all fans so I can't quite figure out why the others aren't spinning?

I have a B550 A Pro motherboard if that helps.

    Thanks!

    Magnetic screwdriver question

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 11:39 AM PST

I just magnetized my new screwdriver set with a strong magnet used at work, but I don't know if i made the screwdriver too strong. The removable shaft can now magnetize to each other. Is that too strong to use to build a PC?

Air or liquid cooling? Aesthetics worth it?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 09:28 AM PST

    Hey guys,

I'm trying to decide between the Noctua NH-D15 chromax black or the Aorus liquid cooler 360 for my ryzen 5600x.

    I have a 3070 and 32gb ram.

The NH-D15 is way cheaper but which one is better performance wise?

Edit: I'm retarded and forgot I had a o11 dynamic case so an air cooler doesn't fit lmaooo

A love letter to the RX 480 4GB after all these years

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 05:38 PM PST

Listen, friends: I thought my build was ready to go. I put together a new PC for myself with components from off the shelf at MicroCenter. I understood that I would have to wait a bit to get the RTX3070 that would make my 1440p/144fps dreams come true, but they had everything else I needed, and my RX5700 had been running like a dream in i5-4590 build for the last year and a half, and would certainly enjoy the increased CPU headroom my new Ryzen rig brought to the table.

Here's where I messed up: I bought the CoolerMaster Hyper Evo RGB cooler for giggles. I set it up but the stupid light wasn't coming on. While Windows set itself up, I searched for reasons why and realized that the RGB connector was directional. I reached into the case to flip it when, inadvertantly, the side of my hand brushed the backplate of my VisionTek RX5700 card. The image went black immediately. "Huh, that's odd," I thought to myself, and reseated the RGB cable which then promptly lit up a happy red. I plugged the RX5700 into another computer and realized that something had gone seriously wrong with the card... I think it's dead.

I still needed to set up this new PC, however. I went into the bin of old PC components and pulled out the MSI Gaming RX480 4GB I used for a little over 3 years before upgrading. It was in a static bag, sure, but it had been stored in a non-climate controlled basement. Would it even still work?

Well, I plugged it in, still appreciating the cooler design and heft of the backplate. MSI Mystic Light controlled it as well as my stupid new RAM and CPU cooler. The fun surprise, however, was that for everything I play other than CP2077 the RX480 still breaks 60 FPS at mostly high settings in all my games. It's a five year old card that cost me about $200, and I forget it's not my RX5700 when I'm in game.

I don't know if the RTX 3070 will provide me with 5 years of usable performance in the same way. It already costs 250% what the RX480 launched at, so it's not a fair comparison. I just would like to thank AMD for releasing such an amazing card years ago that resurrected my build after I made a stupid mistake that should have ended things.

All the GPU shortages have kept us from thinking too hard about it, but has anything like the RX480 been released since? AMD promised the best 1080p/60fps card around, and more or less still delivers. Will the current NVidia or AMD cards do it? Is the 5600XT the closest thing we have to this now?

Fans Won't Respond to BIOS Fan Curves

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 10:16 AM PST

I recently built my first ever computer (https://pcpartpicker.com/user/kfitzp4/saved/LTzLsY). It's working great except the fans are generating a noticeable humming noise even when I'm not doing resource-heavy tasks. I'm trying to figure out whether this is what's to be expected or if this is something I can address with my settings.

As a result, I'm trying to isolate what is generating the sound by setting my fan curves such that the fans should turn off when the CPU is below 37 degrees. However, the fans are still running ( https://imgur.com/CuvZdHJ). Sys5 Fan is connected to all of my case fans whereas the AIO pump is connected to CPU fan.

Understand this fan curve may not be advisable long term but I'm trying to isolate the variables by setting the fans to zero to see what may be generating the noise (CPU fans, GPU fans, case fans, AIO pump). I have MSI's Dragon Center installed but believe I changed the settings where the BIOS should control the fan curves, not Dragon Center.

    Any advice would be appreciated!

    5900x motherboard suggestions for stability?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 09:16 AM PST

What is the "go to" motherboard for 5900x for stability right now? I don't want to pay more than $300.

I keep hearing about WHEA errors, idle crashes/restarts, etc and people needing to adjust bios voltages and such to get their 5900x stable at factory settings. Obviously, those are motherboard issues but in my environment, I can't tolerate those issues and I don't want to tweak forever. If I Overclock, I would go for the "easy all core boost" to whatever the low hanging fruits for this CPU are (guessing around 4.3 all core?).

    Thanks.

Brand new NVME performing "way below expectations"

    Posted: 04 Jan 2021 09:05 PM PST

I just bought a Samsung 970 Evo Plus NVME SSD. Its benchmark is around 170% when userbenchmark says it should be 270%. I installed Samsung's drivers and it is still performing like this. What am I doing wrong?

PC won't get a video signal to monitor. I've tried so much now. help.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 07:30 AM PST

This is the post I've never wanted to make.

A couple days ago, I decided to do some cable management cleanup with my (working at the time) PC. I also installed an nvme ssd (Which I checked was compatible) and 2 140mm fans.

I reseated the GPU to get to the SSD. All cables were unplugged and replugged in as well.

This took a while, but I tried to turn it on today. Nothing.

I've spent the last 8 hours trying to troubleshoot this, I'm sort of going insane right now. I've triple checked every single connector on both sides, they're securely plugged in. I've reseated my graphics card about 4 times too, nothing. All I have is a debug LED on my motherboard pointing to 'vga' indicating a GPU fail. I've tried:

Checking the ports on my GPU and changing out which port the displayport cable is in

Swapping out the DP cable for a HDMI

    Reseating CPU and GPU connections

    Reseating the GPU completely

    Clearing CMOS

    Other stuff, including going insane

Also, I unplugged and replugged the CPU connector, to which my computer would not even turn on at all. Absolutely nothing would happen. I reset the CMOS, which then took me back to the problem I had before of no display signal.

I have one more small detail. Whilst working on my PC, I noticed this. I'm not sure if it was there before working on it. Also, when I turn it on, I see a signal for a split second, before nothing.

I don't think it's my power supply. I have a Corsair rm550x which I've never had any problems with and has worked really well in my system.

Full system specs are an MSI B450 Carbon pro motherboard

8gb Corsair vengeance LPX (upgrading to 16 soon)

    Ryzen 5 2600

Zotac gtx 1070 mini (only bought it last year)

Crucial MX 500gb sata SSD and WD SN550 NVME SSD

    Corsair rm550x

    NZXT H500.

Literally any help appreciated right now, thanks

EDIT: I've fixed the problem!! It is because of the PCIE nvme ssd. I don't know how to fix this issue though.

RTX 3090 upgrade for work (and play)

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 06:14 AM PST

    Gallery of the upgrade

I managed to snag an MSI RTX 3090 Gaming X Trio and did some other upgrades over the holidays. Getting a decent PSU was almost as difficult as finding the 3090. It runs like a dream, I get more than double the framerate I had previously with the RTX2080 for my work in Unreal Engine.

I really liked my Fractal Meshify C case that I was already using so I tried to fit the new parts in. It was pretty tight in places! There wasn't enough space between the top of the ram and the front fan on the Notua DH-15 so I had to swap one out for a smaller one. I also needed a slim front case fan (15mm) in order to fit in the 3090.

Things I would probably change: The mix of Noctua brown colors and black/white could probably be better. Might get two 140mm matching front case fans instead of the mix of Corsair 140mm and Noctua slim that's in there right now.

    i9-10900K, RTX 3090, 64GB DDR4-3600, Samsung 970 Pro 512GB, Samsung 970 Evo 2TB, Dell S2716DG 1440p on the left for 144hz and gaming, Dell U3219Q 4K and Dell U2715H 1440p for color sensitive work, Seasonic Focus PX-850 PSU

    Just purchased components for build.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2021 01:06 AM PST

So I'm building a 400 dollar budget gaming pc. I know nothing about building computers. I've done some reading and just purchased components from an online build guide. This is the list. And these are the parts I ordered.

    CPU - Intel Core i3-10100

    MOBO - Gigabyte H410M

    GPU - Biostar Radeon RX 560 4GB

    RAM - Patriot Signature 8GB

    SSD - PNY 240GB

    CASE - Rosewill FBM-X2

    PSU - Gigabyte 650W

So I got everything on the list except for the graphics card, which I replaced with something similar. Is the Biostar a decent facsimile to the XFX? Am I an idiot? Do you have any other tips to give me? Thanks.
