    Simple Questions - December 15, 2020

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 04:06 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

RTX 3070 MSI SUPRIM X doesn't fit in the x570 MSI TOMAHAWK WIFI

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 05:23 AM PST

Hey Redditors, me and I think other people will have problems with these components. I just build my first PC and it worked very well for the first few hours. The only thing missing was to build in the GPU.

I was really nervous and excited. Well, i looked in the instructions and videos, then i opened the PCie lock and tried installing the Gpu in but it didnt wanna go in. There was never a "click" or other sound indication that the card seated correctly. Then I tried with more force, but it just didn't work.

I was a bit worried, looked a bit closer for my mistakes and then i saw that the SATA connectors were the problem. Here are some Pictures from the Gpu and the SATA connectors causing the problem. There is a little Notch on the Gpu that touches the SATA connectors.

As I said, I'm still a rookie in PC's but in the last 2 years i watched and researched alot about pc's, that means that i could see the obvious mistakes. But I am 99.99% sure that this is a design flaw.

There I'am, standing there without a graphics card in my PC, I am really dissapointed, but the good thing is the PC booted up one the first try, but still for my first build, I prepared almost every component but I didn't expected this flaw.

Unfortunately I couldn't read anything on the Internet either, but i messaged people on the PCMR Discord server and they couldn't help me out, but atleast they made me laugh about the situation :)

I saw 2 people having the same issue on Reddit, but one of them wrote this. His card died with the same components, I'm guessing that is due to this flaw.

The only thing that i could do is to change the motherboard, but which ones would fit?!? Is there someone with the 3070 Suprim X with a different AM4 Motherboard and had no issues?

I will not return the GPU due the lack of no cards.

This needs to be adressed from MSI, because i think if you buy the same brand components it should work out with no problem. I already spoke on the phone and send them a email but with no help and message back.

Edit: I even recorded myself almost dropping that t h i c c boi, please do not watch if this is triggering.

I’m looking to build or buy a gaming pc and don’t know where to begin. This is for my 12 year and who plays games on his current laptop. Not looking to spend a fortune. He talks about FPS and needing an i9 processor. I am tech savvy but haven’t built a computer in a long time.

A story of the luckiest PC build I ever pulled off! POV (kind of)

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 08:18 AM PST

Please check out the story and the pictures in this album!

Really can't believe my luck. I walked in Micro Center on a complete whim, and they just casually had a dozen 3070s right there! I grabbed one, and immediately bee-lined for the CPUs. Well guess what - they had one Ryzen 5800X sitting right there! Now at this point, I should mention, I didn't walk into Micro Center with any intention of PC building. But after seeing that sight, I knew I what I had to do. I quickly gathered the rest of my parts, and sped home to start the assembly!

"I'll just upgrade one piece at a time..."

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 11:19 PM PST

Sigh. I've been building PC's since the late 90's, and I still fool myself like this.

Been looking out for some stock of the 5600x/5800x, saw that a Canada Computers had some 5800x in stock the other day. Jumped in the car to go get one, by the time I got there all gone, so I was tired of refreshing and there already, so I backordered it.

Walked back to my car and thought 'Well, shit. You're already here... Might as well backorder a 3070 I guess...' and looked up the prices on my phone in the car, and then went 'Well shit, it's only a few hundred more for a 3080...' and went back in to backorder order that.

Got home and went looking for a mobo on Newegg. Found one that looked solid, then of course since I'm doing the mobo, CPU, and GPU... Might as well get some new RAM. And oh look, the mobo can take a M.2 2280 SSD. Well, okay. Sure.

OH, wait, my water cooling system will need a new bracket for the AM4 slot... Ugh, what even was my watercooler? NZXT Kraken something something.... No markings I can see on it though. Fuck it, probably best to just buy a new one. It's like 5 years old now anyway.

OH, hang on, how big IS the 3080? 360mm. Shit. I'm going to need a new case too.

Finally, Do-..... Hmmm, hang on a sec, better check the mobo specs again to make sure..... Yup. My PSU only has 1x8-pin connection, and this new setup will need 2x8-pin, plus the 2x8 pin for the 3080. Can I get a modular cable? Yes. For everything EXCEPT the CPU 8-pin. Fine, time to buy a new PSU too.

$3000 later, I've just built an entirely new rig. Well, not yet... All the parts are shipping, anyway.

At least I can reuse some of the 120mm fans I've got!

    The New Build:

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5800x
    GPU: Gigabyte 3080 10gb
Mobo: Gigabyte X570 Aorus Pro Wifi
    RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws 2x8GB DDR4-3600 (16-16-16-36)
    SSD: Western Digital Blue SN550 2TB NVMe M.2 2280
    Case: Rosewill ATX Specrta D100
Cooler: Corsair Hydro H100x Extreme 240mm
    PSU: Gamdias Kratos P1-750G 750W

Here's hoping the backorders don't take too long and the parts aren't DOA... I'll post some picks of the build when it's done.

Edit: As u/lichtspieler and u/Alfred_TC_Pennyworth have accurately pointed out, the Ryzen 5000 series uses the same memory controller as the Ryzen 3000, and there isn't any real benefit to going above 3600mhz (and actually some real system stability issues), so I've swapped the DDR4-4400 out with some DDR4-3600 with better CAS timings (and saved about $60-$80). Thanks guys!

Edit 2: u/Jake0743 pointed out that the PSU I had ordered (Gigabyte P750GM) is on the "Dangerous in all situations" E-Tier of the Linus Tech Tips tier list. I've swapped it out for one that is better rated for high-end systems. Thanks!

    First time building a pc

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 07:27 AM PST

Alright, I built my first pc last month. And it works! This is reassurance for first time builders, if I did, you can too. It started out pretty bad, I didn't have a screw driver small enough for the m.2 screws, since I was using my dads screwdrivers. I also bumped the motherboard with the screw driver a couple of times. So before I ever tried to turn it on, I was pretty sure the mobo would be dead. But I eventually got everything ready and turned it on. Everything was fine but I forgot to connect one of the fans. I've been using it for a month and haven't had any issues! Summary: I think you shouldn't worry too much. You don't need much tools, but it is ideal to have a kit with different screwdriver bits. If you aren't understanding something or something isn't working, consult the internet. There will likely be an answer, also double check everything. Thank you for reading this.

    How bad is GPU sag?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 08:43 AM PST

I feel like this might be a common question so sorry in advance. I just built my first PC and noticed my RX580 is sagging a little bit. I searched online and it seems like it's not too big of an issue but om worried about my PCIe slot and most want to know if it is a big deal. I dont really care about aesthetics too much, I'm just worried about something breaking. Thanks

    RAM Size and speed

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 11:19 AM PST

Heya, what would be better? 20GB of RAM at 1333MHz or 16GB at 1600MHz? Thanks, wondering because I could remove a stick of RAM and get 1600MHz.

    Meshify c cooling

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 11:19 AM PST

Recently built and looking to upgrade fans to lower temps

Noticed Evga xc3 ultra 3080 running 80-85c most times. I feel like that is a little high.

Meshify c with stock fans Cooler master ml240l aio mounted at top of case

Completely lost on fan options and what are good fans and bad. Wouldn't mind having rgb fans but not necessary

EDIT:thanks for all the responses. I decided to order fans, will keep eye on temps once installed this week before I mess with curves

Sub-$500 chair that can take 8 hours of sitting and is NOT ugly

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 09:57 AM PST

Hi all, not sure if a chair like this exists. I am looking for an ergonomic office chair that can take 8 hours of sitting per day. Ideally, I am looking for something that is leather-like and modern looking. (example of something that looks good https://www.lauradavidsondirect.com/products/lexi-tall-back-soft-pad-office-chair-black). Does anyone know if something like this exists in the sub $500 range?

(pls no chairs that look like they came out of a bad sci-fi movie)

    The Ice Cube is completed!

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 09:33 AM PST

After several months of planning, my new PC is built! Final price of $1555.47 was $55 over my initial budget, and $95 under my adjusted budget. I'm still waiting on Retail me not to receive word from Newegg that I purchased the 5600x through their link so I can get their 15% cash back, which would make this $1511, but it's only been 40 days and they say wait 45 before contacting them so we'll see.

    Photo's! https://imgur.com/gallery/6HzPYJF

The darkFlash case turned out better than I expected, was initially worried about the low cost being too good to be true, but this case looks and feels incredible! Highly recommended.

A new build using Ryzen 5950x (need help / advice)

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 07:47 AM PST

So the title says it all pretty much... I will list my current parts picked (haven't bought anything and all is subject to change hence this post)

Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Hero ATX

    Samsung 2TB 870

    G.Skill 32GB (2 x 16GB) Trident Z Neo DDR4 3600MHz

    Asus GeForce RTX 3070

    AMD Ryzen 9 5950x

(Not gonna list power supply yet if the list does change but gonna use a "gold one" probs...)

I'm VERY open to suggestions since I have only seen PCs being built with older parts and I consider myself a "noob" when it comes to picking the right parts.

(Also... not looking to upgrade my monitors or anything else so gaming would be on 1920x1080. Also gaming would not be the only use for this PC.)

Anyways... if you red this post and/or commented anything, I thank you for your time :)

    How to upgrade my ram?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 10:51 AM PST

Hello everyone, I bought a prebuilt a while back and i dont know too much about PC's lol

I currently have 1 stick of 8gb ram and one free slot. This is the RAM i currently have:

    https://imgur.com/a/hot5DFk

I did a quick google search and there are tons of Corsair vengeance sticks that look the same. My question is, does the part number of the new one have to match the one i have right now (CM4X8GF2400C16K4)?

    Absolutely an egg

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 01:20 PM PST

Somehow went from cruising Amazon looking for a PS5 hoping Cyberpunk 2077 looks better, to deciding fuck a PS5 I'm going full PC with this.

I've been gaming on consoles my whole life aside from a year spent blowing wads of cash in Maple Story and customizing Sims. It's come a long way since then, I know.

I know nothing. I want to build my own set up though and I want to stream my content. This is a lil dream of mine. I watch so many people play and I talk into the air the whole time I play as practice haha. I've had some frends suggest looking at Newegg and also to join this subreddit to get advice.

Budget is 3k and thats for everything, the PC as well as all the accessories necessary for successful streams. Games range from Stardew baby graphics to Cyberpunk 2077's orgasmic world.

    How do I start?

First Build and I am confused about compatibility notes

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 12:41 PM PST

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Bg43gt

As you may or may not be able to see, PC Part Picker is giving me these compatibility notes:

    • Note:The motherboard M.2 slot #1 shares bandwidth with a SATA 6.0 Gb/s port. When the M.2 slot is populated, one SATA 6.0 Gb/s port is disabled.
    • Note:Some physical dimension restrictions cannot (yet) be automatically checked, such as cpu cooler / RAM clearance with modules using tall heat spreaders.

Could someone please put that in English for me? If this motherboard will not work for me, I am open to getting an MSI Z490 Gaming Edge instead.

Also, does this build look okay? In your eyes, is it workable?

PC turned off all of a sudden but turns on and won't boots

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 01:54 PM PST

I was just sitting on a game menu when all of a sudden my computer just turned off. The rgb lights remained on but it seems like the light on my aio for the cpu was like half on. I flipped the power switch and tired turning it back on to see if anything would happen. The aio water pump turns on, and I can hear the psu coil wine and the fan on it is also tuning and I can hear my hard drive also working. But I can't get to a boot screen and all fans in my system won't spin and the lights wont turn on. Help please!!

How many fans should you have or entire pc?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 01:47 PM PST

How many fans should you have or entire pc? My case comes with like 3 and I'm kinda too lazy to get fans. Imo I thin 3 is enough because the gpu also has fans. I want at least like 140 fps in cold war. And If I do get fans, what fans should I get. I might just get the be quiet! Pure Wings 2 120mm fans since those are the fans in my case.

Revamping my Father's Old PC for Xmas, any advice on how to get the best performance increase for the buck?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 01:40 PM PST

Hello! As the title says, this computer is pretty old and has been not performing too hot lately. Not sure if the hardware is getting worse (as the PC has been roughly managed and has been rebuilt hastily a few times over its lifetime). My budget is $400-500. I'm totally cool with completely starting from scratch, but I decided to list what is currently in the PC in case someone is creative.

My father uses the computer as a typical workstation requiring excel/word/tax filing programs, etc.

    Things to note:

    1. No need to add price of operating system
    2. No need to add extra storage (he doesn't use much and has a separate external drive for bigger folders)

Let me know if you need any more information. Thanks for the help!

    mini case for a student

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 09:49 AM PST

    https://pcpartpicker.com/b/MDTCmG#

    What i need?

I need a computer for watching netflix, listening music, gaming, coding (usual uni. student stuff).

Small proportions (matx, mini and so on).

Nice cooling A MUST because i will use it as long as i can and will not upgrade it, it will stay as it is.

2tb hdd and 256gb m2 ssd is not changeable sorry, yes i can upgrade gpu or cpu while downgrading them but no thanks.

    My questions:

I will not upgrade it so whats the best choice for the psu? (and yes i want it to be +80 gold)

What is the best choice for case and motherboard?

Should i get 9400f or 9400? Are there any major differences except one of them having an integrated gpu.

How many fans should be in the case since i want the best air cooling and as quiet as possible in a budget?

    Bro, what r ur priorities?

    Cooling and small case.

    Debating on upgrading my GPU/CPU

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 09:49 AM PST

Just kinda getting to the point where my PC is aged and I'm no longer able to play games on medium/high with 60 FPS (Cyberpunk 2077 being 45/50 fps on low but that's awfully optimized anyways).

Edit: I've had this PC for approximately 5 years, maybe 6).

I currently have a GTX 1080 with an i7-6700K. 16 gb of ram is that's really of any use in this scenario.

Edit: My motherboard is the MSI Z170A KRAIT GAMING 3X (MS-7A11) (U3E1), according to Speccy

Asked about my poor performance over on r/nvidia and mostly got redirected to it being aged. (My PC has been overclocked for a while now, which gave me a little FPS boost but nothing crazy to write home about.)

Just wondering what I'm best off upgrading. I figured I might just get one of the newest GeForce 3000 series, but I'm not really sure whether I can, just, do that without making things imbalanced or whatever.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and perhaps the help in advance.

Computer immediately turns off and on again on power-up

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 09:49 AM PST

Hi, sorry if this isn't the right place to ask, but I'm really confused by this issue. When I turn on my computer, the fans start spinning and everything lights up but then turns off immediately. It stays off for about 5 seconds and then turns itself on again and stays on. This started happening about a week or two ago so I'm really confused about what could be causing it. I don't think it can be a software issue because it happens way before Windows could load and I haven't changed any BIOS settings recently. I don't know how it could be a hardware issue either because I haven't changed anything recently. My only guess right now is that it could be a power issue, like maybe I have too many usb devices trying to get powered at startup, but that doesn't really make sense to me. My motherboard is an Asus ROG Maximus XI Hero (Wifi), and if you think any other specs would be relevant, just ask and I'll put them in. Thank you!
