This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

I'm the owner/founder of PCPartPicker. Celebrating 10 years of PCPP + /r/buildapc. AMA

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 08:05 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

AMA. But real quick a brief overview.

In 2010 I was working as a software engineer on a team of people rewriting an optimizing dataflow compiler. We were doing performance and functional testing, and wanted to build a cluster of machines to parallelize the testing. To get the most of our budget, I offered to build the test machines. I put together spreadsheets manually entering in price/performance/capacity data to find what would get us the best bang for our buck. As I was doing that, I thought that the process was tedious and there should be a site to do that.

So in April 2010 I started working on a side project to plot those CPU price-vs-performance and hard drive price-vs-capacity curves. I wanted to learn Django and Python better. My HTML at the time was 90s-ish at best - layouts done with tables and 1x1 transparent pixels, not CSS. I bought a $20 admin theme off themeforest and wrangled it into what I needed. I'm colorblind and not a designer by any stretch and that showed in the site.

I started evolving the site to not just plot component curves, but factor in compatibility checks. I was building new PCs every 3-4 years, and each time it involved coming up to speed with what the latest architectures and chipsets were. That took time and I felt like part of that process could be automated.

Late December 2010 after a heads-up about this community on HN, I posted in /r/buildapc for the first time. When I first started I told my wife that there was a monetization opportunity through retailer affiliate links, and if we were lucky maybe we could go get coffee or see a movie. I left my job to work on PCPP full-time over eight years ago.

I hired /u/manirelli a bit over seven years ago. /u/ThoughtA also joined us over four years ago. (Both those guys are here to answer questions too). They handle all of the component data entry, community engagement, and a host of other things. They're amazing.

What started as price tracking a few retailers in the US is now over 200 retailers across 37 countries, processing hundreds of millions of price updates a day. Brent is the guy who handles all of that, and Jenny manages those retailer relationships. It's a ton of work and I'd be lost without them.

Not to leave anyone out, but huge thanks to the rest of the team. Phil (you can thank him for all the whitespace lol), AJ, Daniel, Jack, Barry, and Nick. You all rock. I'm incredibly blessed to get to work with all of you every day.

This has been such a ride I can't explain it. I've felt so incredibly blessed to be able to be a part of this community and what it does every day. Thank you.

    -- Philip

With all that being said, AMA. There may be some things I can't comment on if they involve agreements or confidential terms.

And yes, we're working on an app. A PWA. May go native later but no guarantees. I hope to have it out by Christmas. I had hoped to have it ready by today but it's just not there yet.

EDIT: Holy comments batman. Gonna try to answer as many as I can today.

Used roommate's AMD 3900 to update BIOS on my x570 for Zen 3, now his computer won't post

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 05:01 PM PST

EDIT: /u/Seismica figured it out! Turns out the cooler was exerting the wrong amount of pressure on the CPU, causing all the issues. Turns out it was quite literally one turn of a screw too tight (guess my new screwdriver torques thing a bit harder than my old one!). Leaving this here so anyone in my situation can also get a solution!

So I have a humdinger of a problem that has been baffling me for the last two days.

I managed to score an AMD 5600x processor for my new computer build. Unfortunately, my x570 motherboard (ASUS TUF Gaming + Wi-fi) did not have the appropriate BIOS to run Zen 3. Even more unfortunately, that motherboard has no ability to update BIOS without a CPU installed.

Luckily, my roommate had an AMD PC with a 3900x inside, on an Aorus x570 pro wifi. So, I snagged the CPU out of his PC (with his permission, of course!), and put it into my PC. Here are the parts lists, I have not yet installed or used the 5600x in either computer:

    Mine

    • CPU: The aforementioned AMD 3900x
    • Motherboard: Asus TUF Gaming x570 + Wifi
    • GPU: Nvidia GTX 660ti (Old, I know! working on an upgrade)
    • Ram: HyperX 16Gb DDR4-3200 CL 16 (two sticks of 8gb)
    • Storage: 1 TB Samsung 870 QVO through Sata, and a 2 TB Seagate Barracuda
    • PSU: Thermaltake Modular full rgb 750W

    His:

    • CPU: The AMD 3900x
    • Motherboard: Aorus x570 Pro Wifi
    • GPU: EVGA RTX 2080 Super
    • Ram: GSkill Ripjaws DDR4-3200 8gx2 CL16
    • Storage: 1TB Intel NVME based storage in the M.2, not positive what the exact make is
    • PSU: Corsair TX750 watt (non modular)

Here's the problem. My build, using his CPU, went flawlessly. It posted on the first try, everything ran correctly, and I managed to update the motherboard BIOS without any trouble whatsoever.

Then, when I go to put the CPU back into his rig, it won't post. The only things I touched on his computer at all was one stick of ram (for access to some cooler screws) and the CPU itself.

At first, I tried pulling out the CMOS battery and resetting the BIOS on his motherboard. No dice. Then I tried using the Qflash function on his motherboard to get it to a BIOS that I know will work with all the parts involved, following manuals and tutorials to make sure I did it correctly. Doesn't help.

Thinking, naturally, I somehow destroyed his CPU, I take it out and check the pins. Everything looks fine and normal. Then, I put his CPU back in my rig (The ASUS mobo), and what do you know, it posts easily and it's all working. CPU is fine.

So then I figure it's a GPU issue. I try his GPU in my motherboard, with his CPU. Again, the computer posts, everything works, the GPU runs like a dream. Okay, maybe it's the ram, I think. I take his ram out, put my ram which I KNOW works as it was just working in mine, no dice, his PC with the 3900x still won't post.

Now, having tried all the main parts and discovered they are all working, but faced with a computer that won't post, I assume the mobo has somehow bricked. So I head out and grab an MSI b550 mobo, and go through the hassle of pulling everything off the old mobo, putting it all back on the new mobo, and reconnecting and reseating everything carefully.

Annnddd his computer still will not post at all, even with a brand-new out of the box Mobo. Now things are slightly different, however. The troubleshooting LEDs light up on DRAM. Only all the ram works fine in my mobo. I also managed to get that same LED result in the old Mobo, only after I used the qflash function with no CPU installed.

I'm at wits end, because if I take the same parts minus the mobo and his nvme storage and put them into my computer, it all works flawlessly, like there's no issue. But in his, it won't work at all, and I have no idea why.

Any ideas on what I should try next? Could it be the M.2 storage? Did the PSU go bad? Did updating the bios on my Mobo with his CPU somehow affect it so that it will no longer work with another mobo? Is it some sort of strange software issue?

Any help at all would be appreciated!

Thank you EVGA for doing the right thing.

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 10:16 AM PST

EVGA has implemented a queue system for RTX orders. You receive an email and have 8 hours to complete purchase of your reserved card. If you don't it goes to the next person in line. 3080 on its way to me without having to go through scalpers or waste hours refreshing pages. Thank you EVGA for doing the right thing for consumers.

Please respond and let us know if our troubleshooting tips/steps worked

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 06:46 AM PST

I love helping on this subreddit, and I've asked my fair share of questions as well. I'm just asking that when a user posts asking for support and there's many suggestions, could you please respond if they worked? Doing so would help people who search for similar issues, as well as let us know in the future should we run into someone else with a similar issue. I know that if your system is not working, then you complete something suggested and it's up and running it's easy to be excited and just move on from the issue. I don't blame anyone for that!

Helping on here keeps my troubleshooting skills sharp and I also just love it when we can get your system up and running again/for the first time. But if we don't know what worked and what didn't, we may just be stuck in a loop.

    Thanks, and happy building!

Call of duty suffering horrible FPS drops. From 150 FPS down to 1-20 FPS and it doesn’t get better.

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 06:08 AM PST

Hey guys. My pc recently was fried due to a fauly power supply. I went ahead and basically built a whole new pc. My issue now is that call of duty refuses to run higher than 1-5 FPS. When I hit the windows button the game runs at 160+ in the background but the second I click on the game application, it starts stuttering from 160 FPS all the way down to 1-5 FPS and doesn't get better. This only happens with cod and it has never happened before. I uninstalled and redownloaded it and the issue still persists. Does anyone have a possible fix? I've tried redownload it and it does not help. Also FYI I am able to run cyber punk at almost ultra settings so I don't think it's a faulty gpu. I believe it's more of a file download or corruption issue. But I don't really know haha. Thanks in advanced!

Edit: I should also note that I was running this game at 70-90 FPS on my old pc ryzen 5 2600 and asus 2070

    ~$3.4k Gaming/ML Grad School Machine

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 01:58 PM PST

I'm in grad school right now for ML (/r/OMSCS) and after my Machine Learning class, I really want a more powerful computer. Yes I know that probably AWS/Google Collab is more cost efficient but I really like having a physical computer, plus for gaming. This is my treat to myself.

My main uses cases are going to be running models on it, some Deep Learning, plus other scikit and random models. I do want to do some NLP and pricing predictions. For gaming, I do mostly 4K @ 60 FPS but I'm fine with 30 FPS most of the time too.

For question my biggest one is really what RAM is best, assuming one wants to max up to 128 GB? Well, best without being too overpriced. I don't like burning money away. I do plan to Overclock, it's the whole reason I'm getting the Dark Hero mobo and the H150i. Or anything else I'm missing?

PC Won't Boot After Restart | Help

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 11:01 AM PST

    Troubleshooting Help:

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list. i7-8700k, 16gb DDR4, GTX 1080 8GB, 240gb ssd + 1tb hdd

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I restarted my PC and left it alone for maybe an hour. When I came back I noticed it hadn't restarted to the windows log in screen. Upon inspecting the tower I can see that it is attempting to turn on. Every 5-10 seconds it will try to turn on - all of the lights turn on and the fans start to spin and then it turns right back off.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I unplugged the GPU and one stick of RAM to see if I could get it to boot that way and that didn't work. I'm wondering if maybe it's a bad PSU or the motherboard. But wanted to get an extra opinion.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here. https://imgur.com/a/NL6N92e

    Any help is appreciated, Thanks!

First Time PC Builder - Moving Away From Xbox

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 02:10 PM PST

    Hello all,

I am going to be building my very first pc and am extremely excited! I have done a solid amount of initial research and have come up with a build I think will work for me. What I am asking is if you could review the build and make sure this makes sense. I'm still new and I could be overlooking or making a mistake.

So my budget is about $1300, including all peripherals. I have zero pc gear as of right now.

I usually play pretty competitive shooters like Overwatch, Apex Legends, Rainbow Six Siege, Valorant etc... I also enjoy open world games like Red Dead Redemption, Fallout, etc. For these open wolrd games, I really do not need crazy good graphics, I would just like to run them smoothly. I have been playing on a release day xbox one for several years no, so any graphics improvement will be much appreciated.

Below is a link to my build I am thinking of buying. This build is currently just for the pc without peripherals. I will probably spend $300 on peripherals, which are not included on this build.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/d8T64d/add_to_cart/ Thanks!!!

    Strange resolution/fps question

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 02:03 PM PST

So I've worked in IT for 14 years, so I can usually figure things out by myself, but I've never encountered something like this before.

I fell for the Cyberpunk 2077 hype and bought it over the weekend. I have a pretty old PC, but a couple months bought a 2070 Super for the EVGA Step Up program with the plans of getting a 3080 and building a new PC come this Christmas and tax season.

Currently, it doesn't matter if the graphics settings are set to the highest or lowest, the fps fluctuate between 26 - 40 fps at 1080p which leads me to believe it's my CPU bottlenecking because I have a AMD fx 8320 which minimum requirements is a AMD fx 8310.

I know that 1080p is more CPU taxing, so if I INCREASE my resolution which theoretically is more GPU taxing, will my fps increase? I have tried searching this and can't find anything on it. I would like to have at least a stable 45 fps.

    Worth upgrading from I7 7700K?

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 01:40 PM PST

    Hey guys,

So right now I have an I7 -7700k and recently I was lucky enough to get my hands on an RTX 3080. I've had my CPU for a little over 3 years now however I'm wondering if it would be worth going for one of the Ryzen 5000 series CPUs.

I understand that the 7700K is still a solid CPU but I feel like I can stretch a more substantial performance increase with my 3080 with a newer CPU (aiming for 1440p), and on top of that I'm currently rocking PCI-E Gen 4 SSD's for the event I'll upgrade so now I'm wondering if now is the time or not. I am currently not big on multitasking right now but soon I will be doing things such as rendering, recording, etc. For possible options, I was thinking of the 5800x as it would allow me to have great gaming performance and also enough performance for productivity tasks and a little more future-proofing over the 5600x but I'll happily take other suggestions. That's if I should even upgrade.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :D

    Todays pricing on "old" GPUs

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 08:55 AM PST

Hi, so I'm planning on building a PC and want to buy a second hand graphics card. I've had some problems with it though. I'm on a pretty tight budget.

    I really don't understand how much I should pay for a used 1060 6gb or 1070?

How do I know if the card is healthy? Already got scammed on 5 dollars for literally trash. I was a bit naiv.

    Thanks in advance ^

I planned on buying the Ryzen 5 3600 for some time but the price rn is a joke, what is a good alternative?

It's probably for a 2060 GPU and it has to be AMD because most of my parts are Ryzen Optimized

Critique my First Build (AMD Build)

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 11:32 AM PST

    Hi Reddit,

First time builder here who's pretty new to the PC scene, was hoping someone can give me some tips on optimizing my build selection. Budget is around $3k (willing to go a bit under or over). Here's what I have so far as a rough draft: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/wdoug7/saved/4QtVwP. I am looking to build a relatively high-end AMD build; any recommendations on why I should change out or keep any of the components would be appreciated.

    Thanks all!

Is my PSU not powerful enough? (RX 5700 xt / Ryzen 5 3600 / 600w psu)

Is my PSU not powerful enough? (RX 5700 xt / Ryzen 5 3600 / 600w psu)

    Hello all,

I just recently built a PC with the following specs:

    • CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
    • GPU: Radeon RX 5700 XT
    • PSU: Corsair SF600 80+ Gold
    • MOBO: MSI B450i
    • RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8 DDR4 3600MHz
    • Monitor: 1080p 60hz

So my issue is that whenever I try to run a game, after about 3-5 minutes the game freezes, the screen goes black, and crashes. I get an error message stating that my drivers have timed out. This happens with Minecraft and GTAV.

Additionally, upon general use, the screen goes flashes black for a second at times, as if there's no output. The PC still runs (I can still hear a video playing) but the monitor acts as if there's no input for just a second, and then it comes back up.

    Troubleshooting attempts:

    • Reseating RAM, GPU
    • Unplugging and replugging power cords between GPU and PSU
    • Cleaning AMD drivers and updating drivers

I saw online that a person managed to fix this similar issue by buying a new PSU of 650W. I just wanted to exhaust all my options before buying a new part. Please let me know if you can help at all. Thank you!

If you need any additional information please let me know.

    Are "gaming" chairs worth it?

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 02:43 PM PST

I was thinking of buying a new chair since my old one broke. I've seen quite a lot of streamers as well as friends use "gaming" chairs but are they really as good as they're said to be or is it just a marketing strategy to take money from gamers?

I'm mostly looking for a comfortable chair that supports my back for long hours. A chair that will reduce health problems involving long periods of sitting. I'm 173 cm tall and weigh 62 kg, I also don't really care about the colors of the chair as long as it's comfortable and good for my back and health.

What gpu/cpu parts would I need to be equal to the performance of a ps5 or better?
