I bought an RTX3080 for 350€ and now the store wants it back

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 11:16 AM PST

I bought an RTX2060S from an online retailer (they have stores but far from my city) and asked it to be delivered. It came but it wasnt a 2060S, it was a PNY RTX3080. I kept it and started using it ofc. Now I got an email from the store saying they made an accident and want it back, asking me to "please" send it back. They're not even paying for the shipping! I also have no idea where my 2060S is, but idc at this point. Am I allowed to keep it? I even signed the package to the delivery guy and stuff.

    Notre Dame Theme PC

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 09:24 AM PST

    https://imgur.com/gallery/BZWRH9n

I built this for my Dad utilizing parts from my old computer so that's why you see some mixed fittings and a combination of soft/hard tubing. I was working with a short timeline and work kept interfering so it's not perfect, I'm aware of all the flaws and I hope the holidays will allow me some time to clean up some things.

Anyway, he's a huge Notre Dame fan so I repainted the Lian Li O11D Razer Case Navy, Gold, and White. The only upgrade I did to components was getting an NVME SSD as his boot drive. If anyone is curious about the specs I'm happy to list, but this was less about performance and more about aesthetics.

Can anyone help me build a budget PC for my children?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 06:12 AM PST

Hi everyone. First of all I would just like to apologize if this is a tough read because I know NOTHING about computers and English is not my first language. My teenage son has been saving up for a few months now (cleaning cars and gardening for our neighbors before lockdown) and although I do not have the funds to give him a £1500+ PC I would like to surprise him. Could anyone help me with a budget of £600? It's the only thing I can afford at the moment!

He's on his phone watching games such as Warzone, Among Us and Fortnite so anything that can run those three games as well as one that can be used for his homework.

    Thank you.

Moving in Freezing Weather, should I take out my AIO?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 01:19 PM PST

    Hi r/buildapc!

I have a custom PC from IBuyPower that I purchased in 2019. I got it with the stock 120mm AIO cooler. Next week I will be moving and my PC will be in an unheated van for around 24-48 hours. The weather is getting colder here and there is a chance the temperatures could go below freezing. I am concerned that my AIO could swell and burst and ruin my PC if there is a freeze.

I've reached out to IBuyPower via email to ask what temperatures the AIO can tolerate, but I haven't heard back yet--this is their busy season I think. Additionally, I have looked into the original manufacturer of the AIO, a company called Apaltek (they also make the NZXT Kraken M22) and they also don't list anything about minimum temperatures.

So basically the TL:DR is: when I move, should I take the AIO out of my PC to avoid any potential issues? Am I being overcautious? Thanks!

    I broke a brand new 1440p monitor.

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 05:45 AM PST

I live in a south american country, and while I'm very well off by my country financial standards, PC hardware and monitors are extremely expensive even for me.

After months of saving money, I bought one of my lifelong dreams: a 30 inch 1440p monitor. It's probably the most expensive single item I've bought in my life, at once. I was very proud of it, of being able to buy it, etc. It sat comfortably in a side table I have, a bit far from me so it wouldn't hurt my eyes.

After 3 weeks enjoying it, I have no idea what happened, but after gaming for a few hours, I've turned off the monitor, went to brush my teeth in order to sleep. After 2 or 3 minutes in my bathroom, I've heard this huge sound. Something fell on the ground, and by the sound, I knew it was the monitor.

    https://prnt.sc/vofscf

I'm still not sure what happened, I think it might not be properly placed, one of the monitor supports might had been slowly sliding and I haven't noticed... Anyway, I'm really really sad, because I had other plans for next year, and buying another one is very unlikely :/

Anyway, as soon as it fell, I tried to see if I could save it. At first, only the right side black lateral strip was completely black, but the rest was fine. So, after a few days of mourning, I continued to used it by adjusting my windows and not playing anything in full screen. Yesterday, after playing for a few hours, suddenly the screen became as the image I shared above.

Is there anything that can be done? Like... Anything?

If you were planning a build for 2021 what technology generations / platforms would you target?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 08:38 AM PST

I'm curious what technologies are on the verge of being replaced with new generations so I can avoid the older generations. For example, if DDR4 is coming to end of life and most new ram for the next X or Y years will be DDR5 I would plan my build targeting DDR5. Another good example is the CPU socket, I would like to target a CPU socket that has a lot of life left so that I could upgrade the CPU 3-4 years after the initial build as an incremental upgrade and extend the life of the PC by another 3-4 years.

Overclocking your GPU is easy, impactful, safe, and everyone should try it (For Beginners)

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 01:38 PM PST

My goal for this post is to convince a beginner PC builder (like myself) to try overclocking their graphics card and give the most basic steps to do so. I recently built my first PC and was hesitant to overclock because I didn't want to break anything and didn't think it would make much difference. But it is actually super easy and safe to put on a light overclock and found a surprisingly big difference in-game. The most basic steps:

    1. Download and open MSI afterburner
    2. Add 25-50 MHz to the core clock (ex. 1366->1400MHz)
    3. Click the check mark to apply
    4. Click save icon and then profile 1
    5. Stress test or just play a demanding game and make sure temperatures did not get too high afterward (85-90+°C)

Done. Enjoy extra performance. This small boost is safe and shouldn't increase temperatures enough to harm the graphics card, and most cards should be stable with +25-50MHz

Personal anecdote: I did exactly this on my XFX RX 580, I boosted the core clock from 1366 to 1400MHz. I also raised my power limit +15 and put in a custom fan curve, but for most basic approach this isn't needed. I play mostly M&B Bannerlord, and was shocked when my 1000 unit battles went from a stuttering 30fps to a much more playable 45fps. My average in-game fps (tracked by the Radeon software) increased about 10-20fps. My temps are the same around 70°C, with my fan speed a little higher, 70% vs 75%, during the large battles. On average my GPU might even be running cooler, not sure how that's possible but it seems less strained on the item screens and general map.

I know this is common knowledge to most, but a simple straightforward post like this might have convinced me to try earlier, so here I am. And if I am sharing terrible advice please save others and my GPU by correcting me, or comment some other beginner info!

    Need some GPU advice

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 12:26 PM PST

I'm building my first PC and I've got all my parts picked out except for the GPU. In a perfect world I would get a 3070 but I am hoping to complete this build right after Christmas so I don't really wanna wait forever for them to restock. My plan is to get something decent for now and then upgrade a year or so from now. What cards should I be on the lookout for? I plan on gaming at 1080p ~100 fps and I would prefer not to buy used parts if that can be avoided. My research thus far has pointed me towards a 1660 super but I was wondering if there might be something better.

How to maintain a PC after building it?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 11:15 AM PST

I built my PC back in 2016. My CPU is an i7 4790k and my GPU is a GTX 970. 16 GB ram, ASUS motherboard. Since then, life has gotten pretty crazy for me. I started college and got a job. Since building my PC, I've genuinely forgotten everything I knew about computers. My PC is almost four years old now and it's starting to show its age. I have a problem now where my case fans will randomly shut off and not come back on for awhile.

My question is - How do I maintain a PC? I shut it down to clean the dust out of it once every couple of months, but aside from that, what all do I need to do? Does cooling paste need to be reapplied to the processor?

Also if anyone has any ideas about my case fan issue, feel free to shoot some suggestions out.

    Thanks

How do I test a used PSU and RAM?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 01:50 PM PST

Bought some "used" components from Amazon Warehouse (PSU and RAM) and want to know how I can check to make sure everything is working as expected.

I won't have all the parts needed for my build just yet so I can't just plug everything in and boot it up, but at least I can check the serial numbers? I'd think this is low risk because it's Amazon Warehouse but I want to make sure

Hey r/buildapc, let's make a list of less-expensive stuff ($5-$100) to throw on wishlists this year. I'll get us off to a decent start... anyone have anything they'd like to add?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 01:11 PM PST

I always want to ask for computer stuff every year, but I often have a hard time coming up with things that are less than $100. I actually made this list in 2018 but forgot to post it... So here's a list of ideas of cheaper things to pad out a wishlist this season. This is meant as a springboard for ideas - I'm down to update and modify this list if any comments come in. I used mostly amazon links because my in-laws would be terrified to shop on some crazy website like newegg. It should go without saying, but as a stranger on the internet, I'd like to remind you that my opinions are worthless; I'd recommend that you do your own research and find your own best options. (All prices are USD)

It's a cheap way to make your headset mic sound better. Will it fix your puberty squeaks and make you better at lobby trash talk? Yes. Yes it will.

If you frequently screw and unscrew, it's handy to have a place to put the screws and bits why they won't run away from your dainty sausage fingers. I like my whiteboard edition, but I don't even use the whiteboard part much so I wouldn't listen to me.

    So nice for cable management.

This is a magnetic strip that can go in your case and provide some colors. It has its own box so I don't think it'll work with iCue or whatever, but it's fun to add color if you don't already have it, and it's fun to add a second color if your case already has one.

A nice and simple way to keep your cables from becoming hangle-dangles all over the place.

In my experience the small, square ones don't have a strong enough adhesive to handle my beastly cable needs.

Big ones are better, don't listen to what anyone tells you.

Get some green up on that desk. Most succulents only require indirect sunlight and an extremely small amount of water.

I personally bought these to clean up my case from the ketchup and mustard. These ones keep their shape very nicely, came included with little combs to keep things nice and orderly, and fixed my marriage.

Not as expensive as I had expected. I don't personally have mounts so maybe someone can sound off in the comments, but I just thought I'd include them as a kind of wildcard to round out a wishlist.

I don't have these because I don't need a disco show in my case to let me know that I spend too much money and time on it.

There are others, so try to figure out which works best for your needs/games/ergonomicalness.

I have a Frieza figure in my case where the drive bay/reservoir belongs just to fill in that extra space and I love it. Several important things about Wish to consider... Things on Wish tend to take a long time to arrive unless you pay for express shipping. This may be something that "you'll get when it arrives." The quality can be all over the place, but of the figures that my friends and I have gotten from Wish, we've been very satisfied with the quality of our orders. YMMV obviously, and idk if it's just my frequent purchasing of urethra expanders and cock sleeves, but Wish's recommended feed is something I'd be wary to link to family members.

A detachable mic with a little docking guy for any set of headphones. A friend of mine recommended the modmic. He has a very nice set of headphones that he wears on the bus and in public often, and this is his favorite way of using them at home while gaming with us. The wireless version is $120 and, well, if that's what you want it's what you want. I think there are better options for mics at that price point like a Steelseries, but it might fit a niche or scratch an itch for ya.

I got one of these just because I didn't feel like wearing headphones for so long while gaming with my buddies which resulted in discomfort or headaches occasionally. Let me tell you, if you game with headphones a lot, unless you have an insanely comfortable pair, this is an upgrade I would almost put on par with getting a second monitor. My friend's has a mute button on the mic and a light to show active/mute which is pretty awesome. Also, if you don't have a scissor mount, it's like do you even game bro, you casual ffs gtfoh

I really like these headphones, but they need an OTG adapter to work for phones because they need a proprietary usb dongle for pairing. I use these with a wind filter and my friends say that my mic quality is excellent. I used to have wired headphones and I strongly recommend going wireless unless you're a dac audiophile or something. Steelseries headsets are, in my uneducated and worthless opinion, da bomb so consider them as well.

Other stuff that varies in price, but hey maybe you needed a reminder idk

mouse: I have a Logitech g502 and I still get wet over it. Had some issues with the cable wrap, but I'm still mad boggy over this mouse.

keyboard: I'm going to say this is might be a controversial opinion, so you have to upvote this. If you don't know that you like mechanical keyboards, I'd be mindful of trying them first before buying. I personally am fine with $20 keyboards and don't enjoy cherry reds. No, I haven't tried any of the other switches, but I'm okay with that. I don't want to get into MK like I don't want to get into recreational heroin. It's kind of like paying for wine-tasting lessons: if I'm okay with getting loaded for three nights on a box of white zinfandel for $18, why would I pay to not like cheap wine anymore? Tell me that, Janet!

--If you use your computer at a tv ever, consider getting a wireless keyboard mouse combo like this basics bitch

case: Some cases are very solid and come in under $100. Like this NZXT case amzn.com/B07C3SQP9V is $80 at the time of writing.

SSD: If you don't have one, fix that. These often go on sale and you don't need a big one. Personally I have my media and games I don't play as often on an HDD while my OS and commonly played games are on my SSD or m.2 drives.

Using 1-to-5 ARGB splitter paired with 1-to-3 ARGB

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 09:05 AM PST

    Hi all,

For my new build, my monkey brain decided I want ARGB lighting, and I was wondering if it was possible to use a 1-to-5 ARGB splitter and pair it with a 1-to-3 ARGB splitter in order to control a total of 6/7 fans (including 2/3-fan AIO, 4 case) with one header. I'm eager to try this fancy stuff out, but I'm not sure if I understand how.

Here's how I'm envisioning the connection if I didn't explain things very well: http://prntscr.com/vok6wh

CPU overheating after installing RTX 3070

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 12:08 PM PST

Hey guys I just got my rtx 3070 Aorus Master and swapped out my old Rog Strix 1070. I also got a new 1440p 144hz screen and am now no longer on 1080p.

However I noticed my CPU runs significantly hotter even though my Graphics card temps are roughly the same as before, maybe a bit hotter (~3-5c), the 3070 runs around 74c under heavy load. My CPU before ran about 65-70c, now it's going up to 82-85 and starts bottlenecking due to overheat.

I have a I5 8600k with an 212 hyper evo cooler. I did accidently bump into the cpu cooler when installing the rtx and it slid a little so maybe I fucked up the thermal paste. Other than that I can't think of why my CPU heat has increased by 15C? Does 1440p gaming affect cpu temps? I thought you tax the CPU less with higher resolution. Any ideas what to do?

Atm I also only have 1 intake and 1 exhaust fans in the case. I do have more Fractal fans to install as intakes if that could help.
