This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    ryzen 9 3950x or 5900x ?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 04:25 AM PST

As the title suggests, I want to buy a new processor.

I need it to be a reliable processor for streaming and recording since my i5-6600k is about to beat his final hour.

I found that these two processors have similar characteristics, with the new generation (5900x) having better single core performance and therefor better fps in games.
But the 3950x is still a very good processor and you can pick it up for a good price here in italy!

    Any advice is much appreciated,

    Thanks a lot!

In light of the 6800XT launch tomorrow, I wanted to share some tips that helped me purchase the parts to finally complete my dream build, despite the stock shortages and scalpers

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 08:36 AM PST

    Hi all,

I know it's incredibly frustrating for anyone trying to build a PC right now, but please don't lose hope. I spent most of last month and Nov trying to get a RTX 3080 and F5'ing just for Newegg to show out of stock before I could even add to cart.

I was this close to giving up and just waiting until next year to complete my build, but turns out I was doing everything wrong. After joining several Discords and learning what methods were working for people, I was finally able to purchase the parts to complete my dream build. Regardless of what people say, it IS possible and there are very specific things you can do to increase your chances of success.

With the 6800XT launch tomorrow, I wanted to share the tactics I learned and used to secure a RTX 3080 and 5950X. I hope this can help at least a few people complete their builds before Christmas!

Please let me know if there is anything to add, or if this has helped you in any way.

    Upgrading a 2015 rig to Ryzen 5

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 11:57 PM PST

Hi all, I'm about ready to pull the trigger on this upgrade and would love any input. I'm upgrading mobo/chipset/RAM from a 2015 build.

    On the way out:

    • Intel Core i5-4460
    • ASRock H81M-HDS Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
    • Crucial 2x8 GB DDR3-1600 RAM

    On the way in:

    • AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
    • MSI MPG B550 GAMING EDGE WIFI ATX AM4 Motherboard
    • Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x16 GB RAM

I plan on keep using the RX 580 for now (was purchased last year), but once the 3070 is more widely available I will probably upgrade to that.

Mostly using this PC for gaming, eventually upgrading to 2k/4k. COD Warzone, Cyberpunk 2077, PUBG. I also do development with docker on linux, so I will dual boot Windows 10/Ubuntu.

    Aiming for 144fps @ 1080, 60fps @ 2k

    700 EUR budget in Germany

Is this a good PC for my girlfriend - FB Marketplace PC.

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 01:51 AM PST

Hello! I have been looking to buy my girlfriend a new PC as she's been getting into games more recently and I think it'll be a nice upgrade from her laptop.

I have found this one on Facebook for £400 ($528) and I'm just asking to see if it's a good deal or not?

    Specs –

    CPU – Ryzen 3400g

    GPU – Gtx 1060 6GB

    RAM – Corsair16GB 3200Mhz

MOBO – Asus ROG Strix B-450F

HDD – No idea on this.

FANS – 6 fans, 3 of these are RGB.

It also comes with an Acer 144hz 27" monitor, corsair mouse, headset and keyboard.

Does this seem like a decent deal??

    Thank you!!

Just want to thank this sub for all the help over the last 2 years. Just wish I knew about reddit earlier.

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 03:51 PM PST

I am now 16 years old and have built 7 or 8 pcs and made a decent amount of money from it. I've managed to get enough money to build myself a respectable gaming pc and also own a very decent lightweight laptop, I just really wish I knew about this sub and Reddit in general lol. My first pc build around 4 years ago didn't go to plan and I wasted my 'life' savings away on a pc that I couldn't get to work. I thought it was all over until something possessed me to give it another shot and invest all my life savings again - very glad I took this risk.

Coming from a family that's not incredibly rich I'm very proud of how far I have come so far and just want to thank everyone here. I have been reading through troubleshooting posts, build guides etc and am very grateful.

    Once again, Thank you all!

    RX 5700 XT, 2060, or 2070?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 11:10 AM PST

I am currently looking to upgrade from my RX 580 in the next three days, however i don't know which card to buy right now.

I'm aware the RTX 3000 series is out and the RX 6800 comes out tomorrow, only I feel that stock issues will remain until somewhere mid 2021.

So until then, should i buy a 5700 XT, 2060, or 2070? I aim to play triple A titles on 1080p at 144 fps.

Hi, I know nothing about gaming but my boyfriend requested a monitor for Christmas... Please help.

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 12:12 AM PST

    I couldn't ask too many questions without him ending up just picking a monitor for me to buy, and honestly where is the fun in that? So after consulting one of his best friends this is where I'm at;

My budget is around 300$, something with 144hz or better if possible, I specifically want to get him a curved one, and these were what I came up with are including some of the best suggestions in current ascending order of preference (but again I know nothing very little, please explain any suggestions you may have so I may learn more about these things)

New problem: I'm trying to go through checkout for the gigabyte just to see with taxes and such what the price will be, BUT IT'S NOT AVAILABLE TO SHIP FOR SOME REASON??? I'm in the US and it ships from the US so I don't see the problem? Will contact customer support and see what the issue is?

1.) GIGABYTE G27QC 27" (As per suggested multiple times) https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16824012013?Item=N82E16824012013&Source=socialshare&nm_mc=AFC-RAN-COM&cm_mmc=AFC-RAN-COM&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_source=afc-Ebates.com&AFFID=23803&AFFNAME=Ebates.com&ACRID=1&ASUBID=ebs3202148410sbe&ASID=&ranMID=44583&ranEAID=23803&ranSiteID=AysPbYF8vuM-t9YRLUWmgs.ug.07ol2zeA

2.) 27" G5 Odyssey (The one I first planned to get him- has similar specs as #1 but with more curvature) https://www.samsung.com/us/computing/monitors/gaming/27-g5-odyssey-gaming-monitor-with-1000r-curved-screen-lc27g55tqwnxza/

    3.) ASUS TUF Gaming VG328H1B 32" (Runner up) https://store.asus.com/us/item/202005AM130000001

4.) MSI Optix G27C2 (I've heard good mixed things) https://www.amazon.com/MSI-Non-Glare-FreeSync-Optix-G27C2/dp/B074G96MPM

Any help would be greatly appreciated! And if there are any affordable accessories that you recommend that would be great to know too! (ooh or if anyone owns/likes a custom shop lmk, our anniversary is right after Christmas 😂)

Edit: He mostly plays League, Apex, Warzone, CSgo, and now wants me to play the new COD with him 😅 I'm going to his place today, I'll take a peek at his set up and get more info on his CPU. I know he just got these this summer because we share an amazon account: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D1XCKWW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y66K3XD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Is the Nvidia 1050 ti better than the AMD Radeon RX 590?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 12:40 PM PST

So recently my GPU (AMD Radeon RX 590) broke down. Since I use my PC nearly every day, I need a new GPU. I planned on replacing the GPU by the end of the year, but since it broke I need to replace it ASAP.

I've been looking at budget GPUs that I can use in the meantime, and the Nvidia 1050 ti caught my eye. I'm wondering if it would be a downgrade/upgrade from the GPU that I had.

I'm very new to building pcs and a very little knowledge about the subject, so I would appreciate any kind of help.

    Specs:

    AMD Radeon RX 590

    Nvidia 1050 ti

What route should I get to make my pc less toasty and more silent?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 05:12 AM PST

What route should I get to make my pc less toasty and more silent? My system is a Ryzen 3300x on stock cooler, Palit GTX 1660 super gp, gskill 16gb cas 18 ram on a b450m steel legend, corsair cv650, samsung 860evo 500gb and seagate old 500gb. My case is a local one here from the philippines which is high airflow but I feel like they cheap out on fans (CASE LINK), and I was thinking to replace then with 5 arctic p12s or getting a cooler for my cpu, im currently thinking esports duo. What route should I take for more silent and better temps!, I get around 70 for both video and and processor when gaming at a around 20-24 celcius room. and sometimes when I use 100percent cpu for 2 hours or so, it eventually overheats and shuts off. What route should I take first? the fans or the cpu cooler? also im buying from amazon and using a forwarder since I buy from the philippines, How do you think warranty is going to be?

SIDE QUESTION: I use my apple earphones for audio, and I plug it at the back since it gives better audio for me, I want to use its mic to so I was thinking of buying an adapter that splits the cable into two! does it degrade sound quality for me to notice or not???

    Ryzen 9 5900x, RTX 3080

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 03:34 AM PST

I know all parts aren't currently in stock, but I think I want to go for Ryzen as i'm going to be doing some video editing as well as gaming, and 5000 series looks just as good as intel 10th series in straight gaming.

Is there anything you would change from this parts list, and will I need to do a bios update for the X570 or have they started shipping them out ryzen 5000 series compatible straight out the box

    Thanks for your help!

The payoff from flipping PC's: Part 1

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 07:14 AM PST

Hello! I'm sure some of you have seen my story about flipping computers etc. throughout the year. Well after hitting my goal, and slowly piecing parts over time during sales, I have finished building my completely new primary rig (Part 2 will be my living room PC I am currently piecing together through black Friday sales).

I started the year with a budget of about $1900, but after selling multiple PC's I was able to get into the $4k territory. Originally I was going to go balls to the walls with a 3090 (hence the 1000w PSU, no regrets though it will last me forever), but decided to instead dump the difference into a second PC for my living room (Can't run a cable, don't want to deal with repeaters, and just prefer to have the dedicated system).

So without further ado, here she is!

I am running a 3070 for now as I plan to use that in my living room PC eventually, but am very happy with its performance at 1440p. Once stock evens out I'll move into a 3080 (or Radeon I suppose) but I'm not rushing for now and letting other people have a go at it.

Like I said, I could have gone for a lower PSU but saving $30~ didn't matter much in the grand scheme. 1000w platinum will do me great depending on how builds go down the road. The BenQ I wanted as I like having monitor speakers to help reduce an already cluttered desk, and these ones are pretty damn good with a built in 2.1. The bass can be a bit heavy but that's my only major complaint. The screen itself looks amazing, very good colors.

I LOVED working with the cooler master 120x360's, so much easier for cable management and running leads. The fans on the AIO were hilariously short and I have them attached to a fan controller on the inside. I would have side mounted but I just couldn't get the fans to work with it and the leads running out from the cooler.

    Lastly, here's the specs!

    Building My First Gaming PC

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 07:44 AM PST

    Hi friends,

I'm planning on building my first gaming pc towards the end of the year (after christmas lol)

I've done a fair bit of research and I think I'm ready to start sourcing components, at least those that are in stock, but thought I should ask for any advice you may have or see if something I might have overlooked stands out to you (my main concern is being sure the components will fit in the case or the PSU not being sufficient - something stupid like that)

I'll be using it mostly to play single player RPG titles like Cyberpunk 2077 (if it ever comes out), Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Metro Exodus & Watch Dogs: Legion and would like it to output comfortably to an UWQHD 1440p 144Hz monitor. I'm pretty sure the build below should be capable of this and then some so consider the excess to be futureproofing

My planned build is as follows:

    Component Ideal Backup
    CPU AMD Ryzen 5 5600X AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
RAM Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro DDR4 3600MHz (2x8GB) Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro DDR4 3200MHz (2x8GB)
Motherboard Asus ROG Strix B550-F Gaming Wi-Fi MSI Mag B550 Tomahawk
GPU Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super 8GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super 8GB
    SSD (O/S) Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe Samsung 970 Evo Plus 500GB M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe
HDD Seagate 4TB Ironwolf Pro Nas 7200RPM HDD Seagate 2TB Barracuda 7200RPM HDD
Case Corsair Crystal 680X RGB Tempered Glass Mid (includes fans) NZXT 510I RGB Tempered Glass Mid (with Corsair LL120 RGB 120MM Triple Pack)
PSU Corsair 650W Bronze PSU Corsair 550W Bronze PSU
    Cost £1,500-£1,600 £1,200-1,300

Please let me know your thoughts, cheers!

    Confused AF:Ryzen 5 5600x or Ryzen 7 3700x??

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 08:27 AM PST

    Here is my scenario:

I love gaming. I have a GTX 1050ti card which I do not aim to upgrade( Dad hates GPUs for some reason -_- ). I was looking for ryzen 5 5600x but it was out of stock and the retailer advised me to buy 3700x , given my graphics card which put me in a dilemma. I am looking to gain fps from the CPU only. I heard 3700x is a balanced choice . So does 5600x lose somewhere when compared to 3700x .

    Damn I'm confused af.

EDIT : By seeing your comments, I would like to ask yall how much I can save by some other cpu and investing it in a gpu? Some combos for 1080p gaming would be appreciated . It shouldn't be posing a problem for 6-8 years and further GPU upgrades too.

Need some advice on upgrading my CPU/GPU and possibly RAM/PSU

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 09:39 AM PST

    Hey everyone,
I've had my current PC (PCPartPicker list below) for over three years now, so I decided it's finally time for an upgrade. I mostly do gaming (1080/60 so far, but I recently got a 1440/144 monitor in anticipation of the upgrade), some streaming, and some photo and video editing. For a while I've been eyeing the 3700x for the extra cores and threads, but now I keep reading about the better gaming performance on the 5600x, so I'm pretty undecided now. I don't have a huge budget, so 300€ or possibly more for Zen 3 is already quite a lot for me when it comes to a CPU. The 3700x goes down to around 250€ from time to time, so that could save me some money.

I also keep hearing that Ryzen likes fast RAM speeds, so I'm a bit concerned about losing potential performance. Do you think 3000MHz is good enough or would an upgrade to 3200 or 3600 be worth it?

As for the GPU, I'm aiming for a 3070 right now. Might take me a while to find one for a decent price due to stock issues, but I'm not really willing (or able, for that matter) to pay much more than 500-550€. I'm a bit wary about the 8GB of VRAM, but reading some posts here mostly put my mind at ease on that matter.

That brings be to my final question, do you think I'll be fine with my 600w PSU or should I be safe and upgrade? I know Nvidia recommends at least 650w for the 3070, but since those are always pretty generous estimates, I was hoping to maybe keep my current PSU. Would be a shame if I had to get a new one just for a 50-100w upgrade.

Sorry this post got this long, I'm just really unsure at the moment what my best course of action in these regards would be. Any help, feedback or advice would be hugely appreciated!
PS: I'm located in Germany, if that's not already obvious from the list below lol

Alright this is my first time building a pc, I just finished it a few minutes ago. It's a Ryzen 3 3100 in a B450M DS3H.

My GPU won't come til a few weeks from now, can I already install windows and boot my pc without it?

    Thanks!

    How to buy RAM

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 12:46 PM PST

I'm building my first ever PC and am putting 64GB of RAM in it. I am a totally beginner, and might have made a mistake. I bought 4 sticks of 16GB ram all the same brand/model/type but come in 2 (separate) packs of 2 16GB. Is this okay, or should I buy 2 sticks of 32GB RAM (1 pack of 2 32GB) . If you can explain why in the answer so I can learn that would be helpful. Thanks!

Should I wait until black Friday to buy a Ryzen 5 3600

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 12:45 PM PST

I've been planning a PC upgrade since may, however in an effort to save some money, I decided to wait until Black Friday. However, recently they have been sold out everywhere, only coming back for small amounts of time for 199$. Do you think I should wait until black Friday and hope it goes on sale, or buy it now? I'm a student, so saving some money would be awesome.

    Is it worth upgrading from a 5 3600x to a 7 5800x?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 09:38 AM PST

So I've been using my Ryzen 5 3600x for a while, and I'm wondering if the upgrade to the 5000 series is worth it. I've heard they are leaps and bounds better than the 3000 series, so I'd like to get some opinions on the upgrade.

Will a 5600x actually improve my gaming performance with a less powerful GPU?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 06:55 AM PST

    Hi all, I'm currently using a Ryzen 5 1600 (3.8GHz all core) with 16GB DDR4@2933MHz and a GTX 1070 (FE, no OC).

My question is whether upgrading to a Ryzen 5 5600x will actually improve my gaming performance.

All of the YouTuber benchmarks use a 3080 or 3090 to ensure that the CPU is the bottleneck and see the biggest difference possible, which makes sense when trying to solely judge the CPU, but doesn't really help my more realistic situation.

I'm just wondering if anyone here has done a significant CPU upgrade while keeping a mid-range GPU, or if there are any comparitive benchmarks of the 5600x out there by tech media, again using a mid-range GPU.

I play at 1080p 144Hz (or as close as I can get) on games like: Warzone, where I get about 90 fps. WoW, 144fps in less crowded areas that dips to 60 in cities. Overwatch, 144fps all the time.

    Thanks
