This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    1440p gaming cpu/gpu choice

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 06:05 AM PDT

I want to fully upgrade my system and need help on which cpu/gpu to get;I'm currently running games at 1440p 144hz with a 1080p on the side, mainly gonna use the rig for gaming and light streaming.I was hoping to have the system for about 4 years when i upgrade.I dont plan on going 4k til it becomes mainstream

    I currently am running a r5 2600 with 1660 16gb ram.

Cpu: Ryzen 5 3600,3700x or 5600x (ik you cant say because no one knows) What do you think i should get with my use case ? Also another small q should i even worry too much about cpu usage at 1440p ?

Gpu:I'm looking at either the 3070 or 3080 (or potentially an amd equivalent;obviously we dont know yet ik) is 3080 overkill for 1440p 144hz and better off with 3070 most likely (if it gives off 2080 ti performance and dlss 2.0)

    thanks for the feedback !

Graphics card's fans go crazy when it hits 70°C.

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 09:36 AM PDT

Hey everyone. Usually I'm the one providing help with PCs but this time I'm defeated.

My problem is with the MSI RTX 2080 Duke OC and its annoying fans. Once the GPU hits 69-70 degrees two fans start ramping up and down and the third one just goes full blast, stops for a few seconds and then back to jet engine mode. It seems like the card does everything in it's power to stay at exactly 70 degrees. Nvidia GPUs should be able to hit 83, but this one never does. Here's a pic from Afterburner that shows the fan behavior

    https://i.imgur.com/ro5wt1S.png

There's no difference between custom curves and factory auto mode. Even setting constant speed has almost no effect. The fans just do whatever.

I've had this build for about a year and I switched to the 2080 in February 2020. It's been like this since the beginning I think, although it was easy to ignore at first. Now I'm completely fed up.

You can hear how it sounds in this video

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRXifAUgmZA

Notice how the fan speed is at 30%, while they actually go 3500RPM.

The noise overpowers game audio, even when I put on my headphones.

And before you ask, airflow is not a problem. I have 3x SilentWings making lots of wind and the same thing happens with side panels taken off. I had a 980Ti before and it was nice and quiet. All my drivers are updated, Windows too.

Did anyone see anything like this before? Could the card be defective? Please help.

I want to build a new PC for Cyberpunk / AAA Games [1080p 60FPS+]. I'm new, so any advice or suggestions are appreciated!

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 07:04 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I hope you're all doing well and staying safe. First off, thank you all for the great suggestions from previous posts! I've taken your advice and make some tweaks to my existing parts list; thanks to your suggestions, I think I've come up with a solid build for Cyberpunk for a reasonable price. As well as Cyberpunk, I'd like to be able to play RDR2, Farcry 5, Ghost Recon Wildlands, and other various games on high/max at 1080p while maintaining 60FPS minimum. I have a 144HZ monitor which I'd like to fully utilize, but I don't anticipate that being possible with a budget of ~$1,000. I've done some browsing on this subreddit and put together a build to the best of my abilities:

I will purchase a Windows Key from Ebay to save some money as well. Please note that the $1,000 budget is not a strict threshold - if higher performance is possible for a marginal increase in price, please suggest it. Thanks in advance!

PC is rapidly failing, I can't decide whether to replace parts or start from scratch. help?

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 10:32 AM PDT

Hey all, I hope this is the right place to ask this, if not I can try somewhere else. My old roomate built a new PC and gave me his old tower at the beginning of the year, and it has worked excellently until early last month when it began crashing/blue screening. I was able to do a complete wipe and reinstall windows and that seemed to fix things for a few weeks, but now it's getting even worse.

The computer is an Alienware x51 (R2 I think? he got it in 2014) with the middle tier options from the Dell website. My friend who gave it to me recommends just upgrading it with a new Mother Board/CPU/RAM and keeping the case and graphics card to keep my costs down, but other friends have suggested just building a new PC from scratch and scrapping this one.

I used PC parts picker to try to find compatible pieces and it looks like the cost to 'fix' this computer is about $600, whereas building a new one is looking more like $800-1000

Is fixing this PC worth it to save a bit of cash, or should I save up to get an entirely brand new computer? Thanks so much for any advice!

EDIT: Specs from my System Info panel:

    Model Alienware x51 R2
    Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-4130 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 3400 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
Display Adapter Type GeForce GTX 750 Ti, NVIDIA compatible
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 6.00 GB

If there's other info I should include let me know and I'll try to find it

Should I upgrade from the 3900X to the 5900X?

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 02:10 PM PDT

    Hey, everyone!

I hope this is the right place to ask this but I've been considering upgrading from the Ryzen 9 3900X to the Ryzen 9 5900X to solve a long-term issue I've been having.

I'm a full-time Twitch streamer in the Rocket League category that plays the game semi-competitively. Rocket League is a CPU-bound game with netcode that is very CPU-intensive; poor CPU performance affects in-game lag quite drastically and poor network performance affects the CPU quite drastically.

In addition to streaming the game, I'm also autistic. An autistic trait of mine is that I'm very tactile and sensitive to things like input delay, stuttering and poor game performance. I have a 360Hz monitor and playing off-stream feels fantastic and natural, but playing on-stream is very difficult and unenjoyable for me because of the issues I'm facing, affecting my overall in-game confidence, mood and ultimately my job.

I moved to a dual-PC stream setup recently after purchasing a 3900X for my gaming PC, hoping to get rid of the input delay I would suffer when streaming, despite my best efforts to prevent it previously. My streaming PC has my old processor and streams off it: an Intel i7-8700. Since no capture cards support 1080p360 passthrough, my gaming PC is always going to be subject to some kind of strain on its CPU when streaming; both methods I've tried, NDI and OBS projection, cause some level of stutter when on my streaming PC in addition to bad rubberbanding, which I believe to be because running Rocket League at a high refresh rate is stressful on the 3900X's single-core performance. The input lag is drastically reduced now, but the latter issues are egregiously present. When running CPU tests whilst playing on stream, graphs show spikes of CPU usage on all cores, consistently.

My question is: do you think upgrading from a 3900X to a 5900X would help resolve this issue, or do you think it's more likely to be software or core allocation related, or something else?

I have tried resolving this issue for a while now, including overclocking the CPU, and the issue persists. For the sake of brevity, please assume it's not Internet or GPU related; my upload speed is good enough and the issue is not present when playing off-stream with no stressful applications open. My current solution is capping the game at a lower frame-rate (300Hz), which helps palliate the issue slightly.

If this isn't the correct subreddit to ask about this purchase, I'd be grateful if you could direct me to a more suitable one.

    Thank you for your time!

Any good graphics cards under $200?

So I have been looking to step up from the integrated graphics on my ryzen 3 3200g to a graphics card, but I don't know what the best card is for it. The gtx 1650 has been on my mind but I'm not sure about it. What would be the best graphics card under $200?

Build check on new gaming PC

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 02:15 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I am finalizing a build for my new gaming pc. Ideally this will last me for 4 years for 1440p play. Ill be replacing the 1080 ftw I have (couldn't find it in pcpartpicker) with a 3080 or 3090 as they become more available. I am still ordering the CPU, Motherboard, and Ram. Is there anything I should change? Or anything that wont work? Im also going to get a vertical GPU mount but am unsure of which one to grab so suggestions for that would be awesome. I have Cable Mods for RX coming too next week.

Edit: Oh and I thought my older SSD and HDD were good/new enough that I would reuse but they aren't so Ill be ordering at least one more SSD.

Upgraded computer. Can't install windows on my new SSD M2. Had a friend try a bunch of things in the BIOS, gave up and now I need help!

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 09:47 AM PDT

Backround: I have upgraded to an SSD, got a new MoBo and CPU. I have taken out my HDD and have (what I think) is windows on a USB. I can not get windows to boot on my SSD.

"We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files."

I only have: Drive 0 Partition 1 MSR (reserved) Drive 0 Partition 2 Primary

I have spent a lot of time tinkering and messing around with this "upgrade". I would give you gold if you could help me solve my problem.

My brother's birthday is coming up, and since he has lost his job to COVID and is having a hard time, me and my Dad are gonna go 50/50 on a new gaming PC for him. We have a budget of £1000 for just the PC itself, can you guys do better than my build? I'm not happy with the bang for buck I'm getting.

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 07:04 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming mainly, and he is also considering getting into streaming. I doubt he'll use it for anything else beyond that.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

For £1000, I'd expect an upper-mid level machine capable of playing the newest games on the highest settings. Obviously he can upgrade down the line, but if possible I'd like this to last at least a couple of years as is.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Me and Dad have committed to £500 each for a total of £1000, but if it goes over that by a bit I don't mind paying the difference.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    The UK.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    • CiT Prism Gaming Case
    • i5 9600k 3.7GHz
    • Cooler Master Hyper TX3 CPU cooler
    • Geforce GtX 1660 6GB
    • 16GB Corsair vengeance DDR4 RAM
    • 1TB WD Blue SSD
    • MSI Z390-A PRO Motherboard
    • Corsair CV650W Bronze PSU

Provide any additional details you wish below.

As I said in the title, I feel as if I'm not quite getting £1000 worth of machine here, but on the website I'm using (fiercepc), all of that is £980. I'm open to suggestions for different UK-serving websites as well as a different build entirely. Thanks in advance guys.

    Ryzen 7 3700x performing worse than i7 7700?

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 11:08 AM PDT

Just built a new PC to replace my father in law's old one. His old specs were an i7 7700 with 16 GBs of 2400MHz DDR4, a sata SSD and a GTX 1060.

The new PC has a Ryzen 7 3700x with 32 GBs of 3600 MHz DDR4 with a 970 Evo nvme drive and an RTX 2070. The thing should be a beast but he says it's actually slower than his old one...

On programs such as correl draw and even just chrome it's sluggish and boot times are slower than his last one. It's running on an ROG strix board with docp turned on and fast boot enabled. I'm just at a loss as to why it's not running as fast as it most definitely should.

I ran a user benchmark test and it said it was at a 100% for all 3 categories so I feel it shouldn't be sluggish. Everything is pointing to it being faster but it just isn't...

Any advice anyone has on here would be great.

Going over to his next weekend to replace the stock heatsink with a Scythe Fuma 2 (the stock fan makes a lot of noise even on silent mode and it runs insanely hot)

GPU literally blew up with a bang and sparks

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 04:16 AM PDT

Hello, Like I said my GPU just fried yesterday while playing a game. It's a GTX 980 TI G1 gaming from Gigabyte which I got at release 5 years ago. So of course I was scared when suddenly sparks were visible in my case. The smoke smell is bad and it's still in my room after a day. So I brought my PC to my local repair shop because I don't have any spare parts to troubleshoot my PC. Today I got the message that indeed the GPU fried itself but all other parts are fine (including my data!). So the question now is, should I replace my PSU too? It's a Corsair HX850i platinum and it still has 5 years warranty on it. The repair shop suggested to do so, even though the PSU still works, as a precaution. He even mentioned some read errors on my m.2 with his data tool, but he was able to open the files just fine. Is it normality have some read errors or is the m.2 toasted to, even if it still works? So basically what's your best bet. Just get a new gpu or get a new psu too? I mean it's a premium psu and was quite expensive back then + it still has warranty. And the m.2, any ideas if it is defective? Or are some small read errors nothing to worry about? It could be that the spark took off to the m.2 considering its next to the gpu. Any help is appropriate, I will be browsing for a new card in the meanwhile.

    4K 60 hz vs 1440 144hz gaming build

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 11:43 AM PDT

Hey guys, I'm trying to find my first PC and I'm trying to find whether 4K gaming is worth it. Specifically debating whether to get a 2070 Super or 3070 (after waiting a bit)

I'm looking at https://www.newegg.com/abs-computer-technologies-ala214/p/N82E16883102985 Which I've calculated the 2070S to be priced around $350. For the frames, is a $500 3070 more value?

I also realize that a good 4K monitor is harder to find than the tons of 1440p 144hz monitors out there, but I also feel like I would regret not opting for a 4K monitor for media consumption.

Pros of 1440p 144hz: Save $150 and additional monitor cost,

    144hz playing fps like csgo

Con: Missing out on 4K for watching videos

    Missing out 4K 60fps gaming

Thoughts? I'm really conflicted on which is the better value + a decision I won't regret

Upgrading to an SSD, need way to backup things

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 11:00 AM PDT

Currently I have a 1TB HDD which is my boot drive and a 2TB HDD and I'm finally getting an SSD, this one specifically as recommended by another person here. (Just as a double check as I'm not 100% sure, it is compatible with my motherboard, right?

Anyways, I need a way to backup my important files as I want to completely wipe my HDDs so I can start with a clean computer. The files I want to back up are mostly images and game saves, but there's also a couple of programs I want to back up. Is there any program that is recommended for doing so or do people just use an extra storage drive to temporarily hold them? I have an old external HDD with about 1TB I don't use for anything so if that's the best option I can do it.

FPS drops and stuttering in COD warzone and Cold War Beta

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 10:28 AM PDT

Ever since the launch of warzone and MW2 I have experienced fps stuttering and dips in game. This happens only while I am in COD titles. Unfortunately these are my bread and butter. I have seen a solution of going into advanced options and lowering your video memory scale and it seems to work in MW2 quite well. I am looking for a more solid solution to my problem because COD Cold War Beta does not allow you to change the video memory scale currently.

I have tried updating all drivers and BIOS, overclocking GPU, ran multiple benchmarks, unplugging USB 3.0 cables and everything else under the sun.

    PLEASE HELP!

My student's first build won't post

    Posted: 17 Oct 2020 11:26 AM PDT

I am helping a student build his first computer.

This is the part list for his build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/h2qNNP

According to https://www.newegg.com/tools/power-supply-calculator/ he should only need 477 Watts.

Everything looks okay from the various pictures he showed me: https://imgur.com/a/iWLoxlc

He has an HDMI cord coming from his graphics card to his monitor and nothing shows up. None of the fans turn on, but the lights on the motherboard are on. The lights on the RAM isn't lighting up. He tried the paperclip test and the PSU seems to be fine.

We thought maybe he had a bad motherboard. He bought a new one and reinstalled everything...and the same exact problem is happening. Essentially the only things that seem to be working are the PSU and the RGB strip on the motherboard.
