    Simple Questions - September 13, 2020

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 05:11 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Help me choose a new monitor.

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 09:13 AM PDT

I'm looking to purchase a new monitor, the 3 that have been on the top of my list to buy are:

Asus TUF Gaming Monitor VG259Q £252

    ACER Predator XB241H Full HD 24" £299

    Asus VG248QE £274.

Which one would be the best specs for under £300? If there are any other monitors for around £250 - £350 which are better than those 3 then would be much appreciated if you could point me in their direction. Thanks.

    The specifications I would like are 23.5" - 24.5", 1080p or 1440p, 144hz or 165hz and a delay of 1ms or under.

    10gbs Vram longevity at 1440p 144mhz Gaming

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 10:12 AM PDT

If all im planning to game at for the next 5 years or so is 1440p, what kind of longevity will a 3080 have with its 10gb vram? I'd like to stay at or close to the limit of my monitor refresh at 144mhz.

Is anyone NOT upgrading their 2070/80/Ti?

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 07:39 AM PDT

I bought my 2080 around 2 years ago, I don't keep up with the ins and outs of all the tech, but a colleague of mine tells me its a mid range card at best when the 3080 comes out? I was hoping to keep it for a while yet, I have 2 1080p monitors.

Interested to hear your thoughts on this

Should I buy used RTX 2070 Super now or wait?

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 01:01 PM PDT

I found a good deal on used RTX 2070 Super. It's 320€. Should I pull the trigger or wait until Nvidia releases new GPUs? Will prices get better then? Should I wait for the RTX 3070 to be released in October?

Following a build I found online for the 3070, what do you think of it?

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 06:24 AM PDT

Edit: Thanks for all the replies! I'm taking everything you guys have suggested into consideration. Right now my biggest question is between AMD or intel for the processor, gaming is the priority for me but I do want to ensure that my wife has a good experience editing and uploading pictures. Doesn't have to be lightning fast for her, it's already going to be a huge step up from the piece of crap laptop she is using

I'm finally getting back into PC gaming because my wife needs a PC that she can edit photos on. Initially she wanted to get a laptop that was $2k, but laptops are lame and I want an excuse to get to play games like Total War: Warhammer and experience games like Cyberpunk to the fullest extent (within my price range, that is). My range of games is rather well rounded, so I'd like my build to be as well

I quickly found this build: https://premiumbuilds.com/pc-builds/best-rtx-3070-gaming-pc-build/ in anticipation of the upcoming Nvidia 3000 series. Would you recommend this build to a friend who has a budget of $1500-$1800? Or do you have another in mind? Thanks!

What's a good budget case with good airflow?

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 08:28 AM PDT

Last year I built my first budget gaming PC and bought the Aerocool Cyclon, It works but I'm not really happy with it anymore. I'm still on a budget, but what is a case you guys recommend? It's doesn't need LEDs or RGB or whatever, just a simple (preferably) black/red or just black case.

PS, SD or Micro SD card reader is also a +, but not necessary.

Trying to build a pc with an important limitation

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 06:18 AM PDT

Hey, basically what the title says. I'm planning on building a new pc, all of these news got me hyped up and I've been gaming on a cheap laptop/ps4 for the past 4 years. The thing is, I live in Uruguay. Local prices on the retail and used market are way overpriced compared to the prices in the USA, so I have to resort to importing stuff from there.

The limitation is: Custom laws only allow for a max of 200 dollars per package.

I wish I could buy something like a RTX 2060-70 and actually, my budget allows it, I want a pc that lasts me for the next half decade at least. But I can't import a card with that price and those here cost twice of what they are worth in the USA.

Obviously I'm waiting for the AMD announcements on october and probably black friday too, but I want to hear recommendations too. I don't mind going the used route, I want something in par to an RTX 2060, I know the GTX 1070 is on that level but amd tempts me with the likes of RX 5600 XT and I hope prices will go down once the RDNA 2 launches. Also planning on buying a Ryzen 5 3600 brand new, but as I said, waiting for the announcements. The PC would not be just for gaming, but for productivity also as my career deals a lot with software.

TL;DR: tips and recommendations with a $200 limit per part

Build Review (FS2020) & question: What RGB controller do I need, if any? (H115i + 6 ML120 Pros).

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 01:37 PM PDT

Hello. I would appreciate any/all comments on the below (100% FS2020 build). Current monitor is 4k @ 144Mhz.

My only real question is do I need to purchase an iCUE commander pro? I would like all 8 fans (2 from the CPU cooler & the additional 6 to be in sync with each other. The 3x pack of 120mm fans come with a lightning node pro & RGB lighting hub. Is this all I need? Should I only purchase one 3x pack then 3 individual 120mm fans (saving $50)? Thanks!

Building a PC I can carry around the house - case with handles, carrying strap, bag, other?

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 11:25 AM PDT

I'm starting to look at building a PC for the first time - it'll be primarily for gaming. One thing I want to be able to do is reliably carry it between my desk (upstairs) and the TV (downstairs) depending on what / where I want to play for the next month or two, without worrying much about dropping it down the stairs. I'm not sure how to best support that.

I know there are cases with handles out there - some of the ones I've found that seem to actually be available right now are the Lian Li TU-150WX, Cooler Master MasterCase MC500, and Asus TUF Gaming GT501. There also seem to be carrying straps and carrying bags, but I'm not totally sure how solid those are or how well they work - particularly if a case includes glass panels like many do, since those seems like they might not like the stress of carrying straps that much.

Any advice from folks who have experience with any of these? Are the cases with built-in handles actually easy to carry? Do the straps / bags work fine with modern cases? Other suggestions? Thanks!

Ryzen 5 vs Ryzen 7 build?

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 01:28 PM PDT

I'm trying to decide between two builds. One is a Ryzen 5 + RGB cooler, the other is a Ryzen 7 with the stock RGB cooler.

I plan on using this primarily as my WFH computer, but I do enjoy playing COD and RDR2 at decent graphics. I'm not looking to upgrade for a couple of years. I like a modest RGB aesthetic without overdoing it. The reason I prefer the Ryzen 7 is that I like how the stock RGB fan is facing outwards, whereas if I got an aftermarket RGB for the Ryzen 5 it makes the insides look a lot bulkier. Any suggestions to improve either build or which one I should ultimately go with?

Can I use the Antec Torque case for everyday gaming?

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 01:23 PM PDT

I'm planning on buying a new pc and upgrading from a gtx 1070. My specs will be:

-ROG RTX 3080 -AMD Ryzen 7 3800X -ASUS ROG STRIX X570-F GAMING -Corsair 32 GB DDR4-3200 Kit -Corsair HX750i, 750 Watt -Corsair Hydro Series H115i RGB PLATINUM -Samsung 970 EVO, 1 TB SSD -Seagate BarraCuda 2 TB

Will these fit and will these have enough airflow in the Antec Torque case? If not compatible, what conflicts are there? This will be my first own pc-build, so if I may get some building tips, much appreciated :)

And is an anti-static wristband important?

    Boot Loop After Firmware Update?

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 01:21 PM PDT

I encountered a strange problem with my PC that caused it to go into an infinite boot loop without showing anything on the display, just turning on and off. I will describe everything that happened before the boot loop to see if anyone can diagnose the problem, because I can't.

    1. I have a GIGABYTE AORUS Z390 PRO WIFI motherboard, but when I first built my PC, the 3rd and 4th RAM slots did not work at all. When I used the 3rd or 4th slot in any configuration my PC would go into an infinite boot loop. I just decided to use the 1st and 2nd because I wasn't sure what the problem was as it was the first PC I built and I assumed it was some sort of compatibility problem.
    2. Everything worked fine until I decided to upgrade my RAM to GSKILL Ripjaws 3600Mhz 2x8 GB RAM. I removed my old RAM and put the new ones in the 1st and 3rd slot, to see if the old RAM was the problem. It went into a boot loop. I tried 2nd and 4th, boot loop. 1st and 2nd worked.
    3. I decided to do a BIOS update to see if that was the issue. I used the GIGABYTE BIOS update software, which I forgot the name of. When the BIOS update was complete and the PC booted, a message showed up in the BIOS telling me to put the RAM in the 1st and 3rd slot to maximize performance, so I thought this BIOS update solved the problem. It didn't and whenever I would try the 3rd or 4th slot, the boot loop would happen again, but whenever I used the 1st and 2nd, it told me to use the 3rd or 4th.
    4. After a few different tries with different configurations, I used the 1st and 2nd slot and instead of giving me the message saying to use the 3rd or 4th, it just booted to my desktop straight away, which was strange, but everything seemed to be working fine even though I was still forced the use the 1st and 2nd slot.
    5. Finally, I got a popup from the GIGABYTE software saying "Restart PC to Complete Firmware Update." I pressed ok, the PC shut down, but when it turned back on automatically, it shut back down and boot looped. I tried removing RAM and clearing CMOS (I may have done that incorrectly though, I am not sure).

Last thing: When I was dusting my PC before I turned it on after the BIOS Update (So before any
boot loop problems) a small plastic piece fell off my motherboard which I think is a jumper. I
don't know where it was before it fell off but the PC booted fine without it, but that was the last
time it did boot because I restarted for the firmware update right after.

Is this build good for the 3070?

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 01:20 PM PDT

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xrWd4n

I also need a low end Graphics Card like a 1660 to be a place holder for the 3070 as I need this PC ASAP for coursework. I will also be playing a lot of games FPS games and other games like AC and hopefully reach 100+ FPS on those games. Is that possible or what changes do I have to make for that?

    New AMD Build

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 08:20 AM PDT

First build in 8 years. I got back into video games during the pandemic by upgrading the GPU and SSD on my old i5-2400 to play Cities: Skylines.

However it still was no longer running the games I wanted to play, so I upgraded to a Ryzen-based build. Still waiting for new batch of GPUs to come out before I upgrade my GPU:

Monitor is LG 27GL850. I love it! I really like Lian Li's case too. Images here

I've been playing Control, Cities: Skylines and Assassin's Creed: Odyssey. My purchase of a 3700X also got me a free copy of Assassin's Creed: Valhalla. Looking forward to getting Witcher 3 soon.

I am not too bummed about missing out on Zen 3, this rig should last me 4 years with a Radeon 6700XT\RTX 3060 Ti.

Did I end up spending a bit more than I should have? Yes. I guess I learned a lesson about future PC upgrades.

Future Upgrades: PSU with all-black cables, and GPU to support 1440p 144 Hz video games.

I will likely go for a semi-modular 80+ Bronze 650 W unit at the least, depending on what AMD\NVidia GPU I buy next year. Maybe a PCIE Gen 4 NVME SSD too when prices are more realistic.

As for my old i5-2400 build, I will re-assemble it and donate it to someone.
