Friend made this joke of a build, what do I tell him LMAO

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 12:53 PM PDT

my friend, after a lot of time of convincing, decided to get PC parts and make his uncle build it for him. His uncle is spoiling him, (he isnt spoiled) but he for some reason recieved about 3k CAD from his uncle to do the pc. he had about 1700$ saved up and wanted to make a 4500$ pc, for the first time.

The main thing he said to me when making this is (i dOnT nEeD tHe CoReS) and this has better fps. Well this is the mess he came up with with soo much passion. what do i tell him (he only wants intel too) https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/RFznPn He also said, one RTX so no bottleneck, second RTX so better fps lmao

Prepping for rtx 3080 and Zen 3. Need help with prepping, water cooling, and

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 09:21 AM PDT

Hello there! I've been building PC's for quite some time but always did it on my own and seldom lurk reddit etc. Therefore I apologize for having no idea if there are specific terms for the following.

I've decided to upgrade my i7 4790 and my gtx970. My current plan is to buy the x570 Asus strix motherboard, rtx 3080, zen3 CPU, and the Samsung 970x evo. However Nvidia only recently teased their GPU and I have no idea when the CPU is going to be released. My main concern is that what if it turns out that the Mobo, the GPU, or even the SSD is DOA, I wouldn't have a clue until I boot it up. Zen3 is scheduled to come out in 2020 but no news on whether it's at Q3 or Q4.

I apologize if these questions seem rather ridiculous to you all. Again, I have been building PC's for a long time, but I have never waited on components to be released like this.

    My questions would be

    1) Should I buy a super cheap am4 CPU so that I can test out my gear? If so, what is the cheapest am4 CPU?

    2) How long does it usually take for water blocks to come out following the release of a GPU?

    3) How does preordering of GPUs work? Do random websites just have it available for preorder starting month x day x hour x? Is there usually enough stock for a few days or does a large number of consumers/ scalpers buy out the Founders edition of GPU? I understand that between the 970 and 3080 GPUs became high demand due to Bitcoin mining so I'm wondering just how in demand the next big GPU is usually.

Thank you so very much for your time!

It’s okay. Your PC/component is not ruined

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 01:51 PM PDT

I consider myself above average experience with building PC's. I've been happy with my i7-8700/2080ti FE build for the last two years or so. But when Warzone has been bringing my GPU to 86c and causing throttling, it was time to take charge. So I ordered an 120mm AIO kit. That's all the space I had left for, with a 240mm already powering my CPU. Pretty inexpensive but good reviews. Definitely Chinese made.

When it came time to open up the 2080ti, it was pretty nerve wracking taking out 40 tiny screws. I had never done anything like this before. At one point, I thought "this is it, no going back now".

Well the VRam heatsinks the aio came with didn't stick very well, kept falling off. And they were a bit too big, blocking a firm connection to the cold plate. So I tried without them.

The computer booted. Temps were low! Loaded up Warzone, joined a practice game, 50c...55c...and right as I jump out of the plane, video goes black. Restart and back to square one. I freak out that I broke a component on my bare video card circuit board. My $1600 component was ruined. Why did I even attempt to modify the card?! I could have just set the throttling to 88c. It probably wouldn't have broke.

I take to the discord: "well yeah it's probably the VRam overheating". Could it really be that simple? I buy new VRAM heatsinks on Amazon. Copper one, low profile. I put tiny heatsinks on my VRM chips too. Well low and behold, all problems solved. GPU never gets above 70c now. The cooler is definitely cheap and a bit loud, but I can't hear it with my headphones on.

Anyways, this rant is just to say: you can do this. You didn't break anything. It's just another problem you can solve.

EDIT: Also - don't overestimate the resilience of silicon. You can scratch it, you can get thermal paste on it, but it doesn't mean it's going to just stop working.

    Are my CPU temperatures normal?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 10:53 AM PDT

I have recently built my first PC. Im using corsair H100i Platinum liquid cooling and also have two case fans. Right now, while writing this post, having open 5 tabs, discord, itunes , MSI Afterburner, and iCUE, my CPU temperatures spike up and down between 60 - 70 degrees. Is this normal? I have set a custom fan curve on the 2 fans that are attached to the AIO and set the Pump to "Extreme" using iCUE software. Also, in my room the temperature is around 30 - 33 degrees.

Here is the custom curve: https://imgur.com/a/YQwdMLH

    Here are the temps: https://imgur.com/a/z3Dr4Jk

Edit: Forgot to mention that I have AMD Ryzen 5 3600 and GTX 2060

Does connecting a 3 pin fan into a 4 pin header, but in the wrong way, burns the fan or mobo?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 07:56 AM PDT

I was doing the periodic maintenence on my rig, cleaning everything and checking on the thermal paste, but I connected the chassis fan in the wrong way, somehow. The lock system that prevents this from happening was extremely loose and it offered no resistance when I connected the fan, and the connector was in the right orientation, but instead of connecting to the 3 right pins, it was connected to the 3 left pins (locking dock side up).

Did I damage anything or the fan didn't spin because it wasn't recognized?

Lightning Hit my Build: Is the Mobo dead?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 11:03 AM PDT

Hello. Last night lightning hit my house via the Cable. It came into the modem and blew away my UPS/Surge Protector (charred and smoking) and took out my cable modem, wifi router, my electric standing desk, and (strangely the rfid sensor on my fridge which detects if you have a filter in place). Finally it took out my PC. I tried booting it and got an A2 error, which is for the SATA devices. Once I removed my DVD drive and my WD hard disk, it proceeded to boot to a 99 code (my SSD might be okay). I removed all PCI-e devices and went down to CPU and just 1 stick of ram and still got 99. I then removed the CMOS battery and jumped the pins to clear CMOS. It took longer to boot but still booting only to 99. By the way, I disconnected external monitors and am just plugged into the mobo directly with HDMI, not getting any video signal.

Could a 99 just mean the Mobo is blown?

The manual says 99 is a PCI/e error code but nothing is in the PCI/e slots.

    Here's the specific relevant components:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4 GHz Quad-Core Processor
    Motherboard: ASRock Z97 EXTREME6 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
    Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR3-1600 CL9 Memory
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

CPU and GPU - best performance for a budget gaming laptop

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 09:58 AM PDT

First "gaming" pc purchase in years. And I dont know what I'm doing. I just want something I can play baldur's gate 3 with.

    I can get a discount through work. Options in my price range are - Ryzen 5 4600h with a GTX 1650 Ti 4gb. 8gb ddr4 @3200mhz

    Vs

    i5-9300H with a GTX 1660 Ti 6gb. 8gb ddr4 @2666mhz

When it comes to gaming today, do I want the faster processor and ram or the faster GPU?

    Thanks!

Trash Apple User Finally Making the Move - Could Use Feedback from my new Robust PC Family

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 10:51 AM PDT

    Hey Team,

I've used Apple for the last 16 years... So yes, my life has obviously not been that great.

I decided to emancipate myself from Apple after some corona issues and hope to be welcomed into my new future PC Family.

I work from home and will primarily use this computer for work. However, I am still a man with a dream of playing video games for the world! So I do want want streaming capabilities and a decent gaming setup.

For work, I run quasi advanced algorithms, while using photoshop, Premiere, 3 google chrome users (10-20 tabs each) and run 5-7+ apps simultaneously. Needless to say, I've been very close to throwing my Macbook Pro out the window multiple times...

I made this setup on PC Part Picker with the idea of getting a $1,000+ Video card in the next 4-5 months. What do you guys think? Any rookie mistakes? Any suggestions from PC family members that made the switch?

Did you build a PC for a friend and it ran into some issues? What was your story?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 09:32 AM PDT

I build a PC for a naive friend which was the biggest mistake I have ever done in my life. He wanted to let his PC built for 80$ by a IT-company, but I insisted to build his PC. It was last year and I still regret it. I regret it because he run into several software issues or any kind of issue that is not related to hardware and he blames by asking "Hey, are you sure you did everything right? Maybe you broke something when you did x and did y and z" Blah, blah, blah.

He has zero knowledge about electronics in general and the building took 2 hours because he was stressing me with questions, having doubts on me.

First thing, I was about to place the motherboard inside the case and he was kinda concerned about the metal noises, which came from the I/O shield because I was fucking busy placing carefully the motherboard inside of the case AND make sure the motherboard is fitted to the I/O shield properly.

After that what I can remember is, when I dropped accidentally this tiny screw on the motherboard from a 3-5cm fall (correlates the height between case window and motherboard) and he literally paniced. His heart was bleeding because I might scratched or damaged his motherboard. I am sure, it just dropped on the matt, non-electrical surface. Nothing happened.

He bought an aftermarket cooler and he insisted that I should install it. I don't have experience with aftermarket coolers because I never installed them. His case was kinda complicated and it was really hard for me to install that Dark Rock Pro cooler. I persuaded him to install the stock Ryzen cooler and he was questioning me any kind of risks running that cooler. I wanted to clean the paste with alcohol and he was scared I was about to fry his CPU.

After bathing in sweat because he didn't have lights on his ceiling installed but we had to use his hot glowing table desk light, I managed to finish building his PC. Guess what, the PC didn't turn on. Who do you think whose stomach got melted, his or mine? :D Turned out I made a mistake with the F_Panel connectors.

I installed Windows, activated it, installed every driver and run into some heavy tests. No issues, no stutters, no freezes. I rebooted, enabled XMP and run into some tests again, it is working fine. I installed Rocket League because I was running out of time and I had to test the machine in Gaming capabilities. Rocket League was performing 250 FPS constant in Ultra settings. Sounds good right?

I build this PC in 2019 and he is still running into issues. He plays Fortnite and he gets 200 FPS in Ultra but he is complaining about some freezes. He was actually refering to not be able to go to Desktop. Also the game was crashing with no error into Desktop. He thought I build his PC wrong, but it got fixed by an Update from Fortnite.

Later, he is getting way too low FPS in this game Tarkov or whatever. I did a research and it turns out, it is a bad optimized game? I don't know, I don't game a lot and I don't know this game. But if he gets 250 FPS on Rocket League, 200 FPS in Fortnite with Ultra settings and max. 80 FPS in Tarkov in Low, it must be the game, right?

I am sure these problems are related to the code of the game itself, but he thinks it is hardware related. He still thinks, I am responsible for maintaining his PC. He literally doesn't update drivers unless I do it. He even asks me whether I could come and update the drivers. I could optimize his PC but I don't want to mess with his PC, not to mention with BIOS settings.

    His specs AFIK:

    - Ryzen 7 2700X
    - MSI RTX 2070
    - MSI Tomahawk Max B450
    - 2x8GB DDR4-3200 G.Skill RGB
    - Corsair 700W PSU modular
    - Corsair Case

Oh, Oh, Oh. He was going to use this PC with no fans and I persuaded him to buy 4-5 fans. He asked me, why do I need fans when a friend of mine is not using fans, either?

I made a similar post about this situation last year on this sub and it got on the front page and everybody was trashtalking my friend which was kinda funny :D Everyone said, that if Benchmarks is running without any issues, the PC seems like to be fine which was the thing the whole time.

TL;DR I built a PC for a friend who blames my building methods and hardware for software issues and thinks I owe him maintenance of his PC. Thanks for reading. I am very interested in your stories.

Help me surprise my boyfriend with some upgrades?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 04:42 PM PDT

Hi! I am looking to upgrade things in my boyfriend's PC because he saved me from an abusive and shitty situation and he never does anything from himself, he is so kind and loving and I know this would make his year. From what I can find out he has this : Processor Amd a6 3620, video card Nvidia GeForce GTX 650, Ram 8g ddr3, windows 8. He has two good monitors, alright keyboard and everything, I just want him to be able to play red dead 2 and stuff on ok graphics, it doesn't have to be amazing, as long as it runs he will be over the moon. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I understand if his is so outdated that we should build a new one.

Mini-ITX build for traveling on a plane... HELP!

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 02:37 PM PDT

Before I start, I would like to point out that this will be a long post so I have included the TL;DR at the top. Also, I want to thank everyone in advance for taking the time to read this and helping me out, I really appreciate it!

TL;DR: Architecture student living in Germany but studying in the US. I want to build a mini-ITX PC capable of handling AUTOCAD and other CPU-intensive programs for the next 3/4 years, but small and sturdy enough to fit in a carry-on luggage to take back and forth (Germany->US and back). $1300-1500 budget with 3 requirements: 1) powerful CPU for heavy workload, 2) no cheaping out on parts to avoid bottlenecking as well as future-proof it, and 3) the size I already mentioned (small and sturdy). I don't care about looks AT ALL, this is just for school and light gaming so feel free to throw in Noctua fans and omit RGB, I don't care about those things.

Hi everyone! I'm a second-year architecture student living in Germany and studying in the US. As part of my studies, I work with a lot of rather demanding software including AUTOCAD, Photoshop, and SketchUp. Most of the time, my laptop holds up just fine, but as I continue my studies and require more and more power to complete bigger projects, I fear it might not stand up to the task. Rather than buy a new bulky and powerful laptop to run those programs, I have decided to build a desktop PC capable of working on large projects with little to no problem, as well as handling some light 1080p gaming here and there (nothing too crazy). However, as you might have guessed, living and studying in two different places puts me in quite a predicament. I come home during the summer months and during the 2 1/2 week winter break, and can't leave my PC behind because I would still need to work on projects during that time. Right now, I think my best course of action is to build a mini-ITX system small enough to fit in a carry-on luggage (with lots of protection, of course). That way, I can take it with me back and forth without having to worry about not being able to do work over the holidays, and I can use it for gaming during my free time. That's where all of you come in! I need help deciding on some components, but more importantly a durable and sturdy case that will fit in a relatively small carry-on luggage similar to this one. I have built a PC before, so I'm not too scared of building, I just need advice and recommendations for parts.

Quick note: I am planning on building this around November/December in order to take advantage of holiday sales and the price drop on "older" cards due to NVIDIA releasing their new 30 series cards (which I don't plan to buy).

I have a roughly $1500 budget (not including peripherals and OS, just parts) and only have 3 requirements: 1. Must have a powerful and future-proof CPU (at least to last for the next 3/4 years of university) capable of handling plenty of stress with AUTOCAD and other future softwares. Nothing too crazy though, I'm still a college student lol. 2. I don't want to cheap out on any parts, but especially on the Motherboard or the Power supply. Upgrading GPU, and adding storage is very easy and can be done later on, but the motherboard and PSU are much more difficult so I don't want to but crappy ones and have to replace them in a year. The only part that I suppose could be "downgraded" is the GPU, but I would ideally like to make it as powerful as possible within the budget so I can also game a bit between projects. 3. I've mentioned this several times already, but it must be small enough to fit in a relatively small carry-on luggage (because I don't trust checked baggage).

This post is turning out to be a lot longer than I expected so I'm really sorry but also incredibly grateful if you've made it this far.

Also, some more details that I would like to point out. This is, first and foremost, a PC meant to help me complete my studies. I don't care what it looks like, so feel free to throw some ugly Noctua fans in there and don't worry about making the color schemes match or including RGB because I really don't care about any of that. Also, if it fits in the budget, I would like to include a small M.2 SSD for the OS and some of my frequently used apps. My school provides us with a OneDrive account and I have an external hard drive for my bigger projects, so storage isn't a huge issue.

Thanks again for reading! Hopefully this doesn't get buried in new because I really need help.

1mm of clearance or bigger case?

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 11:41 AM PDT

This is for my first PC build so sorry if I sound like a noob, lol.

I'm planning to build my first PC soon and I was going to go with the NZXT H710 case because I like how it looks. I know the airflow is said to be subpar, but honestly I do plan to be gaming, streaming, and editing videos but I still don't think I'll overwork my PC enough for it to become an absolute hotbox regardless, so I was set in this decision.

Recently, I told me dad about how I was going to build my computer and he said if I manage to do and and actually have it boot up he'll refund me a chunk of my budget (he has very little faith in me, evidently) and because of this I decided to upgrade my CPU from the originally planned 3700x to the 3900x.

I told my friend about this and he said since I'm upgrading I should possibly get a better case, but again I don't think it's a really big deal, and most of the higher airflow cases aren't really my aesthetic, but then he showed me the NR600 which is supposed to have better airflow and I love how it looks.

The issue though, I was planning to use the Noctua NH-D15 as my CPU cooler, and I kind of panic bought it a couple weeks ago because it was out of stock for so long and I didn't want to miss it so I'm stuck with it. The NR600 has 166mm clearance for the CPU cooler, and the Noctua needs 165mm. According to PCPartPicker there are two builds who have this setup, so I'm not doubting it will barely fit as long as I use low profile RAM, what I'm wondering is the NR600 really going to be better at keeping my computer cooler because it has has better airflow, rather than getting the NZXT case and having more room and clearance?

TLDR; NZXT H710 or Cooler Master MasterBox NR600 for Noctua NH-D15 and Ryzen 9 3900X.

    First Build Complete!

    Posted: 10 Aug 2020 11:06 AM PDT

My first build has been completed for a while now. When I was building this, I was nervously confident. Everything went well except for when I was installing the stock cooler, it took me like 30min to an hour just to install it. I guess I was being to cautious with the retention screws. After that, it was continued smooth sailing.

After a while, I added a couple more fans and went from stock cooler to a hyper 212 BE. Glad to say I have experience in this now.

Here's the build in night's glory
