    Simple Questions - August 08, 2020

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 05:09 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    PC elitism

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 03:36 AM PDT

I am currently a console gamer planning on building a pc. I've been putting together lists of everything I need and it seems like on most pc subreddits (excluding this one you guys are all so nice) people are overly elitist(sorry if I'm using elitist wrong, english isn't my native language) . Like for example, I was looking for reviews for a gaming chair that was in my budget, first thing I see is "get a 300 pound office chair" when I'm not in a position to spend 300 on a chair. I was looking for a wireless gaming headset review, and the first thing I see in the comments is "why would you want wireless, just get a wired headset that's more expensive" I understand when it's an open question but if I'm asking for opinions on a headset, just tell me if it's not good and give me an alternative. I have my reasons for needing a wireless headset, and I have a reason for not wanting to spend 300 on a used chair. I'm sorry if this comes off a bit dumb I just wanted to speak my mind. Thank you.

But I NEED a video card...

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 05:14 PM PDT

Everytime someone asks about buying a video card on here I see them instantly flooded with responses shaming them for even considering doing such an atrocious thing. It's literally all I see on this sub, "Don't buy a GPU the 3000 series are right around the corner." Ok well sOME OF US ARE BUILDING OUR FIRST PC AND DON'T HAVE A GPU? Think about that before you blindly post, you're telling someone to wait an unknown amount of time and forgo having a working computer just for a potentially better deal?

    See how ridiculous that sounds...

EDIT: I'm glad that a lot of you agree with me, it's good to see supportive people in this community :)

EDIT 2: I'm looking for a gpu that will support 120+ fps at 1080p max settings while streaming 1080p 60 fps (top fps titles like COD, Valorant, Rainbow Six)

EDIT 3: Silver? :o Thats my first reddit award EVER!!! THANK YOU! Thanks for all the great feedback guys

EDIT 4: Gold too?!?!?!!? I've never had a post get this much attention :o

EDIT 5: OKAY WHOEVER BOUGHT ME PLATINUM OVERDID IT LMAOOOOOOOOO Thank u so much you took me from never getting an award to getting PLATINUM in one day thats crazy and i've been on reddit for a looongg time

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Computer has power, but will not boot. Fans are spinning for the processor, the case, and the graphics card, and case front panel has LED; additionally, the mouse and keyboard both light up when plugged into the usb ports, suggesting to me the motherboard is receiving power??

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I've read through the manual a bunch, and can't find anything related to LED lights or sensors for troubleshooting. I'm worried at this point, I've bent a pin somewhere just trying to find the problem.

    So far, I've

    • Swapped the Ram around, as well as tried them one at a time; double checked that channels 2 and 4 were the correct ones.

    • Tried the HDMI port on the motherboard, the HDMI port on the graphics card, and the Display port on the graphics card

    • Taken the whole build apart and re-built it from scratch; checked all cables and connections to be sure they were seated properly, as the first time, I was worried about breaking pins or snapping the ram.

    • Triple checked power connections, specifically the motherboard and processor, as I've read this is a common issue.

    • Reset the CMOS or what's it called? I tried connecting the two pins with a screwdriver the first time, nothing changed, so the second time I pulled out the little battery for two minutes before putting it back in.

    • Tried booting without the graphics card; no luck.

    • Disconnected my m.2 from the motherboard and the hard drive from the SATA cables, tried booting with each separate memory, no luck.

    • Double checked graphics card is in the correct slot; I kept it on the one closest to the processor after some reading.

    • Switched the output port on my powersupply for the SATA connection.

    • Tested my monitor and the HDMI with my Laptop, no problems at all and instant connection

    • Unplugged the power connection and purged the power button every time I was restarting the computer with a new attempt.

    • Double checked the processor was seated with the correct orientation. Re-installed the fan.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

I have some photos I can upload, gotta figure out how Imgur works, I'm sure it's easy.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I'm completely lost. I don't want to take it into a shop, since I had really wanted to do this myself, but I don't know if that'll be possible! Is it common for new motherboards to be fault/is that even possible? I'm worried I'll sit here for 14 more hours when the issue is something I never would have been able to even test for...

*Edit: I'm going to upload a video and some pictures tomorrow! It's looking like the issue MAY be the motherboard, but I have a lot of other things to check too. Will post more when I have the video tomorrow!

    Steps im thinking:

    1) post a video and pictures of the setup, just in case I did something REALLY dumb.

    2) let the computer sit for a few minutes for its first post, as many mentioned it takes some time

    3) buy one of those motherboard speaker testers to determine the startup beeps

    4) come at it fresh and not get too angry lol.

I'll add more as I progress! Thank you all again so much, this community is amazing!!!

First $800 PC Build for 144hz Gaming

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 07:07 AM PDT

Hi there! I'm an 18 year old college student and avid pc build follower looking to finally build my first pc. Even after doing tons of research through r/buildapc and r/buildapcsales along with YouTube videos, I've finally compiled together what I think is a suitable pc for my needs. I'd really appreciate any help, advice, or recommendations I can get from everyone here as I embark on my first build.

General Goals: I'm on a somewhat tight budget as money is important to me first and foremost. I've been fortunate enough to save a decent amount of money which I hope to target mid-range gaming at 144hz. The games I hope to play are simple esports titles such as Overwatch and Valorant, although I do hope this build will allow me to experience more demanding single player titles or graphics intensive games in the future. I also don't see myself upgrading any parts in the next 4 to 5 years unless its completely necessary, so longevity is also another priority.

    Specific Parts Help:

Motherboard: I spent a lot of time debating whether or not to settle with the current MSI B450 Gaming Plus Max versus a cheap B550 board like the ASRock B550 Phantom Gaming 4 which is around the same price at $114.99.

I'm also wondering if it would be wise to save money and buy Micro ATX Mobo like the GIGABYTE B550M which is only $94.99.

Memory: Would 3600 speed RAM really make that much of a difference on my fps with this setup? My research points to no but any confirmation would be nice.

Case: Really aiming for a case that includes pre-installed fans and a mesh front. Right now, its a toss up between the current Cooler Master MasterBox and the Phanteks Eclipse P400A which goes for $94.99.

Again, thanks so much for reading. The picking parts experience has been both fun and challenging especially with prices fluctuating within days. (I mean, look at the Ryzen 5 3600 prices. $12 price jump in a day smh) But at any rate, I'm excited to finally join in with a community I've been passionate with for awhile. Any help would be extremely appreciated!

Building a 350$ budget Minecraft Rig for 70 Years Old Grandpa

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 08:42 PM PDT

Hi guys, Hear me out I'm planning to get my grandpa a buget minecraft rig for around 350$, because that's is the most i could afford right now. Long story short, I'm a 22 years old that live with my 70 years old grandpa since my birth, there are only 2 of us. I have save up around 350$ of my budget for my grandpa gaming rig due to the reason that he is really having fun playing minecraft and city skyline on my 5 years old asus GTX960m gaming laptop and amaze by the graphic plus the creativity to what he could do in game, generally we had really fun time together. However the issue is , I had to use my gaming laptop to work everyday and during the time my grandpa has to be at home all day without having much to do. My grandpa has been diagnosis with Hypertension for around 5 years now, to be honest I never know how much time he has left , So i want to make him happy for the time being and not having any regret if anything happen.

I Live in a third world Country in southest asia so Pcpartpicker is not really accurate and I won't be able to order any part online , instead I would provide the part list including the price that I could find from 3rd party retailer below:

    -CPU: Intel Core i3-4330 = 45$

-CPU Cooler: Deepcool CPU cooler: 20$

    -Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B85M-HD3 R4 = 40$

    -RAM: Gskill DDR4 2133Hz 8GB = 30$

-GPU: AMD Radeon RX570 (second hand) = 130$

    -Power Supply: Gigiabyte 450 W ( Second Hand ) = 30$

-Case: Cheap Chinese case with okay air flow + Case's Fan = 30$

    -SSD: Kingston 240G SSD = 35$

Total Roughly about 360$ but could get a small discount.

For monitor I don't have budget for it yet, but i might make use of the old dell monitor from ages ago or our TV.

Anyways if you guys have any suggestion or idea please let me know .

Edit: I'm really blown away by your kind respond. I probably don't have time to reply to every comment but I'm sure to read all of your idea and making the final decision. Thank you everyone.

Heavily off topic (and late) but here's the Father's Day card I received this year

Quite proud of my girlfriend - who puts up with my love for slaving over part research and build lists - taking the time to check out PCPP site, come up with a decent pun and stuff. Inside the card there were three build cards reminiscent of the official build guides on the homepage: "entry level dad", "budget streaming dad" and "excellent gaming dad", the latter of which included a drawing of my stupid face. I love family and I love PC parts.

Are GPU support brackets any good? Any recommendations?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 05:57 AM PDT

Built my first PC a month ago and I noticed that my GPU is slightly falling, so I looked up this issue i found GPU support brackets. Are they any good? Does one bracket fit all or do I have to find one for my specific card ( I've got a RTX 2060).

    It's ugly, but it's done!

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 01:14 PM PDT

Finished my rebuild recently and thought I'd share.

It's not a pretty, RGB build - in fact, its an ugly brown and black build with no lights and a handful of reused components. But a good bit of work still went into it and I'm really happy with the results.

I ended up "over"-clocking the CPU to both improve my load-temps and improve my multi-core performance and it's been running great so far (some details here, ended up with 4.05GHz @ 1.206V).

Build Image - finished build, running

Fan/exhaust Config - I tried quite a few different configurations in this case with 3x 140mm and 2x 120mm fans - decided to go with this as it gave the best CPU temps under load

How can I create a quiet computer?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 01:51 PM PDT

I purchased my computer from a student two years ago and have finally identified all the parts in it. I have my computer in my room, and when put on sleep mode it randomly turns on during the night. The issue with this is that it's lights are pretty bright and the computer is very loud, which usually wakes me up. I also have some improvements I would like to make:

    • Improve Wi-Fi antenna (My computer is much worse at receiving signal than my phone)
    • Improve Bluetooth (My headphones often cut out)
    • Quiet Computer (Little to no noise)
    • No Lights
    • Smaller Profile (I believe I have a Mid-tower, but I would like to go as small as I can)
    • Better GPU (My current GPU struggles with VR and my 1440p 144Hz monitor)

    Here are my specs: CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 1700 Eight-Core Processor (16 CPUs) ~3.0GHz Motherboard - HP 8399 Memory - 16384MB RAM, Samsung M378A1K43CB2-CRC 2x8GB Storage - SanDisk SSD Plus 240GB Storage - WE WD20EURS-63S48Y0 2TB Video Card - Radeon (TM) RX 480 Graphics Case - DeepCool Mid-Tower Power Supply - EVGA 500 B1, 80+ BRONZE 500W Monitor - AOC CQ27G1 27 1440p 144Hz Mouse - logitech M100 Keyboard - AmazonBasics Matte Black Wired Keyboard

I think that the noise comes from the CPU fan, then under load it comes from the GPU and Power Supply. If you have any ideas for inprovements I could make, let me know. Thank you guys!

    Gpu for about $200

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 01:26 PM PDT

So I have a build that I was running a 1080ti in but that was about a year and a half ago now. Since then, through moves and such, a person I let watch my computer lost it, its been a while since I've been in the market for a GPU and have had my eye on a 1660 but I also wanna see what people think is worth it for my price range ($200-300) since I haven't been in the market for a good long while.

    submitted by /u/Dumbledas

Should I sell my 1080 and use my old 970 until the 3000 series comes out?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 09:38 AM PDT

So since the 3000 series is coming out soon, I was thinking about selling my msi gtx 1080, and go back to my msi 970. Then when the 3000 series comes out, upgrade to a 3080 or 3080Ti. I looked on ebay and offerup, and people are selling the same 1080 I have for roughly about 400-550 USD.

Right now, I'm not really playing any games that demands high gpu usage. The games I am mostly play as of now, are either Gmod and Valorant.

Also, if I should sell it, whats the best place to do so? If that is subreddit friendly question to ask.

    Thanks!

It was hard, but I finally am the happy owner of a new gaming pc.

    Posted: 07 Aug 2020 05:55 PM PDT

The building process was easy. But upon setting up Windows, my motherboard failed me.

Sent it back for DOA, received another one, still no response. I felt discouraged and very sad. I thought the motherboard ruined every other component. I tried to send the PSU for diagnosis, it worked fine. Same with the Memory.

It was the GPU. I dont know why but it seems that it died along with the mobo.

I spent a month trying to solve the problem. It was very hard and I was super frustrated. But in the end, it was totally worthy. Now everything is working superbly great.

I want to thank this subreddit for the moral and technical support. Very grateful to be apart of this community.

Specs: I cannot choose whether it is entry level or mid range, but here s the overall build: Ryzen 5 2600 (SO MUCH SPEED) 16 Gb 3200 Mhz (Gskillz) B450m Motherboard (TUF Plus Gaming, better than expected) RX 580 (Sapphire Pulse, quite good) 1 Tb HDD and a 250 Gb SSD ( From WD ) A single Corsair Fan ( Planning on adding more later) Corsair R80 mAtx Case. (My old case)

I upgraded from an i5 7400 and a GtX 1050 2Gb. It was a hell of an improvement. I still did not get to play any games but I got Red dead Redemption 2 on the Steam summer sales.

Long time lurker, proud first time builder from Hong Kong. Thanks to this community and multiple YT videos, my first build was a success. Used my old 970 as I'm still on the fence whether or not to wait for the next gen of GPUs.

Honestly, I'm not religious, but that moment before you first power on can really make you, lol.

One question though, unfortunately I didn't research hard enough and only realized a bit too late that the Tomahawk Max does not have a SPDIF output. Could anyone please recommend me a budget DAC to hook up to my 7.1s? Thanks so much in advance.

Why is gtx 1050(ti) popular even thought it is less powerful and more expensive than rx 570 and 580.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 09:11 AM PDT

I get that GTX 1050 and 1050ti consume less power so Prebuilt systems can be easily upgraded. But other than that i don't see any reason for it being priced higher than RX 570 and 580. Here in Mongolia, used RX 570 and 580 goes for less than 80$ but gtx1050(ti) and 1060 goes for 100-150$. Is there any problem with RX 570 or 580?

    Complete Beginner

Hey, I'm pretty much a complete beginner when it comes to pc's, and am starting to save up for a decent one. And I know everyone says building it isn't really hard, but I'm pretty worried about it. I was wondering if there was a video that really explains parts of a pc, and what they do, but in real laymen's terms.

Is this normal? Is there something wrong in the installation of the GPU or will the fans spin only upon reaching a specific temperature? Thank you in advance

About a week ago, I was trying to play some Maid of Sker on my stream, but it would freeze about 10 minutes in, but I could hear my audio still, I was never able to locate the issue but I just assumed it was a problem with the game seeing that it was brand new.

Well lately, practically playing ANY game, my computer will freeze, and either restart itself, blue screen, or hard freeze with no errors, and I have to hard restart it.

The weird thing is, I can run any and all stress tests with no issues, I've run MSI Kompressor for my GPU on multiple settings, including a high quality 1440p, and I can get through it with no freezes, stuttering, anything. I also ran Cinebench with no issues either (although I do have a significant decrease compared to the replica system they have which I have pictured below.)

I used to be able play DX12 Borderlands 3 with no issues at all, but now I can't even launch it, switching to DX11, I can play for anywhere between an hour to 3, but will always crash and have to restart my computer.

Modern Warfare also does the same now, I can't even get past the menu without it freezing and having to restart my computer.

I am at a loss, I have tried many things, can't seem to figure out what is going on, and don't have the means to replace parts right now, so I am hoping that we can figure it out here.

This is what I have tried:

    - GPU and Windows drivers completely up to date

    - Turned off all my OCs, even underclocked my CPU and RAM, still crashed around the same time

    - Reseated and cleaned all my components and even applied new thermal paste to my CPU

    - Cleaned out my Hard Drives of all junk and uninstalled plenty of things to make sure I wasn't capping out on memory

Computer specs and that aforementioned Cinebench test are attached below.

EDIT - Just ran a Windows Memory Check and it went all the way through with no issues... So I assume it is NOT a RAM problem.

Looking for the best GPU upgrade within a $500 to $550ish budget for my aging high-end gaming rig

Would also be open to suggestions of other ways to allocate this money that either aren't a new GPU at all or just aren't entirely a new GPU, if you feel that there's a better move I could make here.

Deciding Between 5700 XT or the RTX 2070

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 09:23 AM PDT

Planning on upgrading my PC but don't know which one I should get. People have told me about software problems with the 5700 XT but I have an RX 480 rn and I haven't really experienced any driver issues or anything. Any idea on which one is better?

I need a really fast nvme drive. Should I do Sabrent Rocket Gen 4 QLC or Gen 4 TLC?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 01:01 PM PDT

I am going to get a Sabrent Rocket Gen 4 NVME drive. Which one performs better, is faster, and longer life span, the Gen 4 QLC or the Gen 4 TLC? The QLC releases next week, but idk if it is better than their TLC one. Both are NVME SSD drives.
