    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Friend scammed me on a PC build

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 11:46 AM PDT

I had someone who I thought was a decent friend build a new PC for me. He was super willing to help and I thought I was getting a good set up.

After having some issues on PC, I decided to check out my specs further I bought 9th generation I7 but a 4th generation was installed. I bought a msi motherboard but an older gigabyte motherboard was installed. Different/older ram was installed. Older ssd was installed. I was brand new on the PC world when I got it but now I know I don't have what I paid for.

Before I tell him how disappointed I am in him as a friend and human being and cut him off, is there anything else I should pay attention to?

    Thanks a lot.

Edit - thank you everyone for your tips, advice and support. It really helps. It's going to create a clusterfuck within multiple friends, it's hard to get into details and am hesitant doing so online. I will be looking into small claims court now. It will not be ignored. I have not contacted him and don't think I should at this time.

I will update this post and small claims court results when things are more settled.

how do youtubers swap hardware without reinstalling windows or going through all the drivers and uninstalling them 1 by 1.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 08:35 PM PDT

i have a ton of hardware i need to test and my friend has 3 dell optiplexes that needs testing so im wondering how i can test hardware and not have to go through the process of uninstalling drivers, i know of DDU for GPUs but idk on ram, CPU, WiFi card and mobo and also how do you swap a drive from one PC to another easily without drivers interfering asking on behave of my friend that has 3 optiplexes to test but only has 1 drive.

i know youtubers edit that out but i seen some dude revert windows on stream took him like 10 mins i dont know how to do and yes i see that for some people windows will just detect and install the drivers for the newly installed hardware but i have tried and either it brings me to safe mode because of change or it gives me a BSOD or other errors becuase i do have to switch boards cause im mainly testing CPUs.

Mobo for ryzen 3 3200g that DOES NOT and never has needed a BIOS update?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 08:50 AM PDT

All the mobos ive found like B450M DS3H and B450M Pro4 have needed/need a bios update. I dont know if the place im buying from has updated the bios or not and i cant ask them. Im also not in the USA. And i am taking the 3200g because the store has limited options on cpu's. Looking for more low budget side mobos, lets say, up to 120€.

    Thank you!

My first build went wrong in many ways

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 08:12 PM PDT

    I'll just make a list:

    1. I put the cooler on incorrectly (twice) so my thermal paste, which was pre-applied, is now in questionable condition

    2. I forgot to install the IO shield until after installing my MOBO

    3. I used the wrong screws in the standoffs of my MOBO and had to use pliers to get them out

    4. I had just screwed in my three case fans when I discovered that one of the "three fan headers" described on my motherboard's product page is the dedicated CPU cooler fan... So I have two operational fans right now and a cable splitter in my Amazon shopping cart.

    5. My CPU power cable from my PSU was too short to reach its spot on the MOBO in an accessible way, so I had to completely remove my graphics card and motherboard to open up the routing holes behind it (that before couldn't be used because the head of the cable wouldn't fit between the hole and MOBO, but the cable could so it was fine after reinstalling)

    6. My graphics card's display ports were too large to pull out the rubber stoppers through the PCIe IO hole (idk the proper term) so I took some pliers to the bar between them and... Widened it... It wasn't the best solution, as I'm sure this was user error, but this was seven hours into my build and I'll let this image speak for itself

    7. After everything was up and running, I ran a UserBenchmark and it told me my components were running in the 30th percentile. Idk how reliable that is, but shucks.

    8. Finally.... Well, actually this is good. I still haven't installed my spare hard drive, optical drive, or even front panel LED headers, but I did run a stress test on my CPU with 100% load on all cores for two minutes with no temps above 80 (so maybe my thermal paste is fine), and I also played a few rounds of Valorant and had some good fun.

So I'm not sure what to take away from it. I spent nearly 10 hours working in the end, which is way more than it should have been, but I also learned a lot. Was a good experience. Even though there were so many frustrations, I have a more powerful machine now than ever before, and I'm looking forward to keeping it with me for a long time.

Do every AMD Ryzen coolers run at the same capacity?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 11:19 AM PDT

    Hello,

Last week i built a gaming pc with a Ryzen 5 2600, which i installed with the stock cooler ( Wraith Stealth), and yesterday i built a pc for my dad's office, with a Ryzen 7 3700x, which is also installed with the stock cooler (Wraith Prism). My dad uses puts his pc under the desk, so he doesn't see the RGB on the cooler, but i put my pc on my desk, therefore i see the interior. Here's my question: Can i install the Wraith Prism on my 5 2600, and put the Wraith Stealth on the 7 3700x? I use my computer for gaming, but no overclocking and very high demanding tasks, and he also just read emails, work on excel sheets, ect.

    Would it work?

I have all my pc parts

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 02:23 PM PDT

I have all my pc parts! Hurray! Now just one issue. Im super afraid to put everything together. At first it all seemed easy to do. I watched a bunch of Linus tech tips videos and it seemed easy to do. Now that all the parts are in my hands im pretty afraid to put it together.

    Coolers for i7-10700k

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 08:59 AM PDT

What coolers are people using for the 10700k? I'm going to be ordering parts for my first build eventually and still deciding on the cooler. I don't plan on OC'ing too high to start. So far I'm leaning towards the NH-D15.

So I'm building a PC for the first time and I am confused with daisy chaining.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 01:51 PM PDT

Hi, I have two fans in my build that come with a cable to plug into each other. I am wondering if this means I can plug them both into the one header and they will both power on? Or will I still have to plug them into seperate headers? Thanks!

Saved 2/3 of the cost of the $3,600 (!!!!) Macbook Pro I was about to buy. Hackintoshed it successfully. Managed not to fry anything. Photoshop and Lightroom absolutely fly on this, crunching through 46mp raw files.

    AIO Placement Recommendations

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 12:46 PM PDT

So I am replacing my wraith prism cooler on my Ryzen 2700X with a DeepCool Castle 360Ex. The case I'm using is the Phantek Evolv X. Currently I have two 140mm fans intake on the front and one 140mm exhaust on the back. I bought another 140mm case fan (same as the ones it came with) so I will have a total of four 140mm fans to work with plus the three 120mm fans for my AIO. This is my plan, please let me know if there are more efficient configurations.

Front: Intake - three 140mm fans

Back: Intake - one 140mm fan

Top: Exhaust - 360mm rad for AIO

Which X570 board is best for me?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 01:51 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

So i'm in the final stages of upgrading my build. I've made the decision to for with the Ryzen 9 purely based on the flight sim requirements i'll be needing. I'm concerned about the MOBO as i know nothing about them and from what i can see as long as i get an X570 board i should be good.

Would this board be good? Or would it matter if i went with a cheaper board like the Asus Tuf X570 or the MSI MPG X570? The price difference is between $20-$50 which isn't huge in the grand scheme of things but would be nice to save some pennies.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Here is my pc parts list: Here **Note that GPU isn't included because I am waiting for Nvidia 3000 series and since there's no specifications yet, I am unsure about psu yet)

Bought a Prebuilt PC a week ago but it has a minor issue

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 01:43 PM PDT

    Troubleshooting Help:

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list.

https://www.newegg.ca/abs-computer-technologies-ala218/p/N82E16883102989?Item=N82E16883102989 GPU and CPU came as described

It came with this SSD, https://www.newegg.ca/team-group-gx2-512gb/p/N82E16820331315 this power supply, https://www.newegg.com/apexgaming-ax-series-ax-550-550w/p/N82E16817326009 this ram, https://www.newegg.ca/team-16gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820331360 and this motherboard https://www.newegg.ca/asrock-b450m-ac/p/N82E16813157880

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Heard a buzzing noise coming from inside the computer every so often without any specific cause, does not really get worse while I'm playing games

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Have tried stopping/unplugging individual fans and it didn't help to stop the noise, for awhile I thought it might be coil whine or the PSU but I felt the vibrations and noises coming strongest from the GPU. The noises seem to stop when I stop exactly one of the GPU fans with my finger, but I don't know what to do about it. I should still be covered under the refund/return/warranty period

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Not my video, but this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQRhHw39Gc0&feature=emb_title seems to be the exact same noise with the exact same graphics card

Provide any additional details you wish below.

All prices above are in CAD since I live in Canada. I bought a prebuilt off Newegg because I didn't think I could build a much better PC at the same parts/price and I'm easily stressed out by the idea of messing up the build and having to troubleshoot it myself, but unfortunately the PC arrived with a minor problem. It runs fine and everything, and I know the SSD/PSU are probably cheaped out but it was otherwise fine until I started hearing the noises. What should I do? Should I try to RMA for just the GPU to see if they'll send me a new one before I mail the old one back and see if that alone fixes it? As I previously stated I live in Canada, so while shipping the entire thing back would be a lot of trouble I'd be willing to go through with that as this noise gets annoying and I don't know how bad it is for the GPU in the long run. The sound itself isn't that loud, I can hardly hear it if I have music or something playing but it gets annoying when it's dead quiet.

I'm aware that it's probably a better idea to just return the whole thing and build my own PC, but I have no experience with it and I'm not exactly good with my hands so I thought it would be better to just get a prebuilt.

    No POST

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 07:32 PM PDT

Just build a pretty nice PC but it doesn't seem to be posting. The x570i's LEDs turn on and pulse green and orange (immediately, without pressing the power button), and the power button has no effect on anything and the GPU doesn't light up. Also no case fans spin. I have tried using a single stick of ram in both of the slots (both sticks), switching hdmi to the mobo, and haven't been able to get anything. Really disappointed. I'll attach some pictures so maybe someone can see if I have something wired wrong. The wires are a mess right now since I have been trying to fix it for a while. I'm baffled. I have attached some pictures which may or may not be helpful. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: maybe a parts list helps

EDIT #2: just to clarity, I am certain that I did not statically shock any of the components and was careful to handle everything properly.

No display on monitor and/or no post

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 12:04 PM PDT

Hi, I just put together my first gaming pc build and when I turn it on there is no display on my monitor. More specifically, when I power my pc on, the lights and fans work as they should except for the cpu fan, which stops for a second and then resumes normally. All of my parts are brand new and I've yet to get my pc into the bios/downloading windows.

    Parts list:

    CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x

Mobo: Gigabyte X570 Auros Elite (Wifi)

    Memory: Gskill DDR4 3600 CL16

GPU: MSI Geforce RTX 2070 Super Ventus GP OC

PSU: EVGA Supernova 650 GA (80+ Gold Fully Modular)

Storage: Inland Premium 1tb nvme ssd

What I've tried (to no avail):

-Using different display ports and hdmi (yes in my gpu not the mobo)

-Testing my monitor and hdmi cable on my laptop (they both worked)

-Reseating my gpu in both PCIE slots

    -Reseating the memory

-Using both memory sticks individually in 2 different slots (4 tries total)

-Using a different VGA power cable in a different slot on my PSU (the GPU fans turned on either way)

-Taking apart the entire build and rebuilding it

    What I haven't tried:

-Installing a different gpu in my build (or use my existing one in a different build) because this is my first pc and I don't have extra parts laying around

-Plugging in a debug speaker to my mobo to listen for beep codes (which unfortunately didn't come with my case or mobo)

I'm thinking this might be a GPU issue, unless I'm missing something obvious. Also keep in mind that my CPU fan stops for a second when I power on my pc, which might be a message from my mobo that something is wrong.

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

    SSD + HDD Combo

    Posted: 01 Aug 2020 01:35 PM PDT

I've decided for my custom build to have a SSD/HDD combo in which I will be storing my OS and games on a 500GB SSD. My HDD will be 1TB and store documents, pictures, and other huge files. If my SSD fills up and my games are store on my HDD as a result, will they run at HDD speeds despite having your OS stored on an SSD, or will my HDD become faster because I have an SSD installed on my pc?
