This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

If you’re looking for a super budget computer, get the 3200G!

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 03:20 AM PDT

It vastly exceeded my expectations, so much so that I'm not even sure I want a dedicated GPU anymore.

For 90 bucks, this thing is a monster. R6 runs 1080p low 60fps. Even more if I lower resolution. Mirrors Edge Catalyst runs 60fps at nearly medium settings. Valorant runs 60fps, and looks amazing. CSGO obviously runs. Minecraft also runs perfectly. And it's temperatures only hit 80 when you really push it. Most of the time it's at a comfy 45-70c.

It's seriously undermined in those YouTube benchmark videos. This thing is incredible. If you're planning on getting a new super budget gaming PC, I really recommend the 3200g.

    Here's a quick build I made up. (DS3H should support Ryzen 3000 out the box :) )

A friendly reminder to clean your pc periodically.

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 08:31 AM PDT

Every month/few months you should clean out your dust filters. Especially if you have hairy pets.

I did it today and it was more than I expected.

My first ever PC is finally done!

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 12:36 PM PDT

After waiting a very long time, I finally got all of my parts in for what is not only my first ever PC build, but my first real PC that I've ever had. For 18 years I've been living purely off of school computers. The craziest thing about this, is that I'll be able to go on Coolmath whenever I want. No more blocked websites for me. I did pay some extra money for some aesthetic things like the white ram that cost ten dollars more than a kit that was functionally the same, and the cable extensions that will get here tomorrow. I'm overall super happy with how the build came out. I'm not a big fan of over the top RGB nor did my budget really allow it, so this simple White/Black/Grey look was pretty cool once it was all done. I got pretty lucky with part availability, I chanced upon a really good PSU, the NZXT H510 was finally in stock, and the B550 drop date allowed me to get one of the lower end ASRock ATX motherboards to finish it all off and get some good forwards compatibility for the near future. If anyone has any tips for ways to make it look better (remember again my white cable extensions will be here tomorrow, I just got too excited and had to build it now so I wouldn't go crazy), or any tips for a new PC user, be sure to drop them if you have any.

Parts List: CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 Mobo: ASRock ATX Phantom Gaming 4 Ram: Crucial Ballistix 3600mhz CL16 GPU: Gigabyte 5700 XT OC Storage: 256GB M.2 SSD (Gen 3) + 2TB Seagate Barracuda HD PSU: Corsair 650W 80+ Bronze Semi-Modular Case: NZXT H510

The process of getting into building a pc for beginners

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 08:09 AM PDT

I'm not a pro at pc building but here's the process of it all:

    1. You find recommendations of parts and create a part list from this subreddit
    2. You search in youtube the gpu and cpu combo and what I looks like on different games
    3. Find benchmarks online on the games you want to play, if the stats exceed your expectations but are too expensive move down the next lowest part.
    4. Go to eBay and see if you want to buy any used parts
    5. Just find deals on r/buildapcsales and just find deals, for example I found a very good ram deal on eBuyer.
    6. Ask this subreddit if it's compatible and make sure you have the correct PSU and all of that
    7. Start buying the parts, by this step you should know the basics of building a pc through tutorials, my personal favourite is scattervolt and bitwit.
    8. Build the pc and set it up

This is a simple guide, also make sure to do a lot of research.

So with this current build I've been looking to upgrade my video card and processor, after going to the microcenter I was suggested to actually update my motherboard since the version I have is discontinued and it may not be compatible with newer upgrades.

This is my first build and I'm not particularly too knowledgeable on suggestions so I'd love to get some input on where to start, particularly with a motherboard, so then i can see what options I have for video cards and processors. As for uses, the uses I have for this build are gaming + data processing work that involves a beefy computer. My budget is flexible so I don't need the cheapest options.

Also, I was curious if I should aim towards a Ryzen processor or stick with an intel.

    Thanks for the help.

PC instantly froze upon clicking “Yes” to the “read file?” prompt to update BIOS (Asus)

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 02:29 PM PDT

Mouse cursor is hovering over yes and it just froze when I clicked to confirm. Was trying to update to the latest BIOS for an Asus Crosshair VI X370 (WIFI-AC) and I'm not sure what I can do to remedy this. Any suggestions?

New build, can't boot into BIOS

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 11:14 AM PDT

i just finished my new build with an AsRock x570 pro4. Everything seems to be working fine, win10 installed and all that, but i cant boot into BIOS. Holding or pressing F2 on startup leads to a black screen. Restarting, Windows starts up normally...i downloaded the ASRock restart to UEFI utility but it also ends up starting to a blank screen.

I haven't installed anything that came on the DVD with the motherboard because I have no optical drive in this build, is there something from there I'm missing? Thanks

Rest of the system is: Ryzen 5 3600x, 8gigs RAM and a GTX 1080, nothing is overclocked.

Do "0db" GPUs make a noise when the fans turn on under heavy load?

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 12:24 PM PDT

When I turn on my PC with the GPU I have now I can hear the fans turn on but then after that I never hear them ever while using my pc.

I was going to get a new gpu and I was wondering if GPUs where the fans only turn on when the GPU is hot, if they make that same "startup" noise in the middle of gaming or whenever.

    Issues with newly upgraded PC

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 01:12 PM PDT

So I recently upgraded my PCs CPU, mobo, and ram as I had an old am3 socket mobo with ddr3 ram.

I now upgraded to the gigabyte x570 UD with am4 socket with a Ryzen 3600 and corsair vengeance ddr4 ram. My old build would overheat and crash a lot so I decided to get a CPU that was more efficient as well as ram so neither would overheat.

The old parts I am using are only 2 years old and it includes the MSI gtx 1060 6gb, a 600w evga power supply and an Samsung Evo SSD that was a little older than 2 years.

The old build would boot alright so long as the parts weren't overheated.

I just threw in the new parts and at first it would boot to bios, then would freeze with a white dash on the top left. I knew this could be a hard drive issue which would make sense since the old build crashed a lot. I thought maybe it corrupted the drive so I tried to check the bios and see if the SSD registered. When I tried to open the bios it froze again with the white dash however the dash was slightly closer to the center since it froze so quick the dash didn't have time to move to the top left fully.

Now I thought to just unplug the SSD and some of the extra stuff and keep it to one stick of ram, mobo, cpu, and gpu. Then I tried to restart with just those four and now it doesn't even show the BIOs splashscreen and just goes straight to a slightly off-center white dash and I have no clue what is stopping this from booting.

Here is a picture of what my screen looks like: https://imgur.com/a/BcNq7Oq

Before that image, the white dash was basically all the way in the top left corner whereas you see there its halfway between the top left and the center.

I tried to take out the GPU as well but in that case nothing will show on the screen. Also another note is that the GPU fans stop spinning once it gets to the white dash. Also the fan LEDs flash a couple times when it tries to boot then they stay on.

Edit: Found my issue in a Toms Hardware thread. I had my Keyboard plugged into my front panel to try and use the BIOs. I unplugged from the front panel and directly into the mobo and bios/windows start up perfectly now.

Just fully built my own computer on my first try!

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 11:13 AM PDT

I've had my old computer for about 4 years now. I upgraded a prebuilt dell with a 1050 ti and it came with a 2nd gen i5. I'm 18 now and have a job thankfully, so I decided that my first goal would be to build myself a new pc. It took over a year of planning and 3 months to gather everything, but I finally did it. I'm so happy with how it turned out!

    This a good 750w PSU?

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 12:46 PM PDT

I usually go Corsair, but all of their PSUs exploded in price lately. My friend wants a recommendation, and I found this one.

I don't want to make a bad recommendation, so I was hoping for some confirmation. He needs 750w, so this one going over is fine.

This PCPartPicker link down here is my 900€ build (I live in Italy). It's aimed at 1080p60 at max settings and I'd prefer to not replace any component in 6 or 7 years from now. I'm not sure about all the parts tho, so I'm asking for advice.

Im torn, need some advice please

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 02:13 PM PDT

    Hi all, (From Canada)

Ok I am currently running a system with an rx580, and 6600k

I use two monitors, and always tend to have multiple web pages open, as well as discord

I am ready to build a new gaming computer (will be my second time) but I am absolutly torn what to do. Do i go amd or intel? Do I go balls to the wall and get top end everything or just maybe a 570 mb, and 2080 super with a cpu like 3600x to upgrade later? I have been looking at this for this days and want to pull my hair out lol.

Like I said, I game, and have multiple web pages, and discord open with two monitors

I am currently using a 1080 monitor also, which I would like to go to 1440

Could those who are way more savvy than me advise me or show me builds I wont regret.

Top end $3000.00 Canadian, but naturally lower the better. I dont wish to build this and have to upgrade in a year from now

    Thanks guys and gals

How should I get into pc gaming?

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 04:27 AM PDT

I've been reluctantly wanting to switch to pc, but the thing is, should I start off with minimal stuff first or should I build a powerhouse of a pc first? It's because I'm saving up money I have started collecting since may for helping out around my house with chores and all sorts of stuff, but since I'm coming of age where I could start to take job offers from my school, that has a lot of programs that offer unique jobs during the breaks and they pay well for the time you're doing, and I'm in the Agriculture program so they get job offers both semesters.

UPDATE: I have decided to go with an AMD Processor, and all the parts are what I found from pcpartpicker and saved a list of on amazon Motherboard: ASUS TUF B450-Pro AMD Ryzen 3 CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x 8-Core, 16-Thread GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 2070 8GB Case: Lian Li Mid-Tower ATX With Tempered Glass PSU: GAMEMAX 750W Fully Modular 80+ Gold HDD: 3.5" WD Blue 2TB SSD: 2.5" Samsung EVO 1TB Memory: Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB 16GB DDR4 CPU Cooler:Noctua NH-U12S Fans: Corsair LL Series LL140 RGB This'll come to about $1530
