This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

TIFU having 25+ years of experience building PCs by running my $3K Ryzen system in single channel mode for 2 years

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 10:54 AM PDT

Let it be known to all that Bageland2000, having been building computers since 1994, has been running his RAM in the A1/A2 slots, causing single channel and in inability to get any decent overclocks, in his $3K plus system for over two years...

Just a lesson to all, DIMM slots can be confusingly labeled. In my case, I just learned that B2/A2 are the two slots for running 2 our of 4 DIMMS. Not only has my PC been running single channel for two years, but the Samsung B-die 32GB 3600MHz kit has been forced to run at 2400MHz since I couldn't pull anything higher frequency (until now.)

But I've never been so happy to learn that I'm such an idiot.

    I Built A PC

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 12:58 PM PDT

With some help from a couple fine folks, my first PC build is complete. I only ran into two minor issues. One of them being that I had to reset the CMOS after I already had booted for some weird reason. Thanks to the community for the help and confidence. It really wasn't that hard, so anyone who is on the fence, I challenge you to do it.

I spent $3700 on my PC and it’s mediocre

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 01:50 PM PDT

Don't know what i'm aiming to achieve with this post but here i go. It's my first ever build and it's still a great system on paper I suppose. Maybe I just need some cosmetic upgrades? idk. But i feel sad about it. It looks bland and I feel like my performance could be better if i had chosen better parts/allocated my budget differently.

I spent exactly $3,714.28 on my computer. I'll admit my monitor was $500 of this. I think the reason it ended up like this is because i originally only wanted to spend $1500 on it Max. So, I bought my first few parts with that in mind, however, I clearly went overboard soon after. Open for discussion as I might be whiny a baby and this is a great computer.

Part list: (first started this in October 2019)

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 - $195

Cooler: NZXT Kraken Z73 - $275 (overkill but i wanted the LCD Screen for gifs)

Mobo: MSI MPG X570 Gaming Plus - $200

    Memory: G.Skill Trident Z 16GB (2x8GB) $110

    Storage: Sabrent Rocket 1TB M.2 NVME SSD - $150

    Storage: Seagate FireCuda 2TB M.2 NVME SSD - $400

    GPU: EVGA RTX 2080ti FTW3 Ultra Hybrid - $1600

    Case: Corsair Air 540 - $150

    Power Supply: EVGA SuperNova G3 650W - $126

    Monitor: Alienware AW2518HF 1920x1080 240Hz - $500

    My First PC!!

Specs: CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 GPU: RX 5700 XT Memory: 16GB T-Force Vulcan Z 3200MZ CL16 Mobo: MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX Storage: SN550 500gb Nvme ssd Storage: 2TB Seagate Barracuda HDD PSU: Rosewill 650W 80 plus gold (fully modular) Case: Lian Li Lancool 2

Peripherals: Keyboard: Coolermaster CK552 (red switches) Mouse: Logitech G203 Prodigy Monitor: AOC C24G1

It was such a fun experience. The only bumps that I had was that I was not mashing delete AS SOON as the PC turned on and it said that there was no boot drive (stupid mistake, figured it out 5 minutes later) and that the HDD drive was not reading. I had enabled the Sata port that the HDD was on, but it still wasnt reading. After 30 minutes of trying to figure it out, I ended up just changing the Sata port on the mobo and it worked perfectly. thank you to everyone on this sub for helping me out! Appreciate y'all!

I feel a bit awkward asking.. but is there a shopping list or guide to building a starter PC?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 12:48 AM PDT

I'm somewhat tech-oriented and enjoy making my own things, but don't have an immediate interest in developing expertise for building computers at this time. Is there, say, a relatively up-to-date flowchart I could use to develop my own build? The wiki here is amazing but still quite dense and piecing everything together is a bit confusing.

The people who post here seem so knowledgable, like they've put in dozens or hundreds of hours into developing expertise. Don't get me wrong, I can see myself getting quite into custom builds, but I just don't have the bandwidth to take on a hobby that requires an extensive learning curve at this time. Having a relatively current shopping list and instructions to follow would be such a gift.

Hi, I have been having very disappointing performance from my pc, and its driving me mad. About a year ago i brought my gpu to celebrate getting a paid uni placement. I had to buy a new power supply for the gpu. Since buying myself a 4k monitor for Christmas to go with it i have been extremely disappointed. The pc really doesn't preform well in 4k, i get like 40fps with dips on med settings on most recent games. I first thought my cpu was overheating so i brought the cpu cooler, and that didn't help. I have also brought 32gb of faster ram, which has also not helped. Trying to use task manager and hwmonitor cpu and gpu often show at around 70% but ill be getting bad frame drops. I'm pretty sure overheating isn't the issue, with the watercooling, and i have quite a few fans, though I'm thinking about getting a bigger case for better airflow to be sure. I have rebuilt the whole pc multiple times with all the part swapping, so im fairly sure its all plugged in right.

I was really hoping for at least high settings in 4k, i thought id built quite a nice pc so having low fps and med settings is disappointing. I also have a friend with a very similar pc, who gets very good performance in 4k, ultra 60+fps, etc. His cpu is a little better than mine, so im thinking that might be the issue? I am also having trouble getting the oc to boot with the ram at the correct clock, it wont boot at over 2933Mhz.

I've gone a little mad buying new things to try and get the performance i was expecting from the gpu. If i do need a new cpu thats obviously a big purchase so i really want to make sure there's nothing else to try before i get one, as i wont be able to afford this for a while. Is there anything that might be worth checking, or other information i can give

Thanks for any help. I'm really at a loss for what could be wrong. At this point I'm really hoping its something embarrassing i can easily fix!

    5700 xt or 2070 super?

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 02:50 AM PDT

Over the last few months I've been doing a ton of research and saving up my money to build a new gaming pc. After many iterations of builds I finally landed on this build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/wLCDvW The only question I have now is should I buy a 5700 xt or 2070 super. I originally wanted to go for a 5700 xt as it's the clear winner in performance for price. The problem is that I've heard the 5700 xt has some poor drivers and many people are getting black screens or issues with games. This is going to be my first pc build and that's something I really don't wanna have to deal with. The 2070 super also has slightly better frames, with some titles drawing 20+ more frames. Sure these are nvidia sponsored but the card still performs better on those titles. I'm really not sure what to do, the 5700 xt just has insane value however the 2070 supers slightly better performance and much better reliability are tempting. What do you guys think?

Be careful. Even the top tier power supplies can be defective.

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 06:48 AM PDT

Just finished my build a couple weeks ago and figured I'd post this here as a word of caution. I spent $1800 on my newest rig, got it all together, Thermaltake Corsair RMx PSU finally came in, spent an hour doing cable management until everything was finally together. The PC posts and I do all the windows updates and steam installs. Go to boot up Red Dead and there's a loud pop and hiss followed by the smell of burnt popcorn and smoke filling my case.

I contacted Corsair and they confirmed I had everything plugged in correctly and that I must have received a bad unit. Thankfully, I don't think there was any damage to anything else. I'm using my old PSU while this one RMA's and so far everything seems good. I haven't removed the mobo heat sinks to look for damage nor have I tried overclocking yet. I'm not sure what I could have done differently, but just be careful. Even the top tier PSUs can be defective. I thought my brand new $1800 rig was toast.

My Pc and monitor work. But the software does not. When I turn the computer on it will show either two things. A black screen with like a typing thing in the top left corner. Or it will show "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or insert Boot Media in selected boot device and press a key" what can I do so that my pc boots up correctly and I can play games on it?

Built my first* PC! (and comparing it to my new one)

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 02:11 PM PDT

Hey, I am really excited to share the new PC that I built a few weeks ago (just had to wait for the new GPU since I've been using an RX 570 from an old crypto mining build). Also quick disclaimer, English is not my native language so excuse my mistakes. Well, as it says in the title, it is my first PC build but not really. I built my first PC with my dad guiding me through the process and me kinda building it when I was 12 or 13. Even though there are the cable routing grommets, there is no cable managing whatsoever! Sorry dad but this was terrible, ily. Anyway, here are the specs (it's a miracle I remember most of them, so excuse me for the possibility of me having made a few mistakes here and there) : Case: Cooler Master Silencio Pure PSU: FSP Hyper 700 MOBO: Asus Z97-A CPU: Intel i7 4790K Quad Core CPU Cooler: Hyper 212 Evo RAM: Corsair LPX DDR3 16GB (1666MHz?) SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 250GB HDD: 7200RPM 1TB WD GPU: The initial build featured a GTX 770 but the one in the picture is a 1070.

I sold the first PC 2 years ago and I haven't had a PC since. So, now we come to the moment I've been waiting for and I'm dying to share. My new PC! Let's see if my skills have improved at all shall we? I wish I could talk to my 12 yo self and tell him to manage those damn cables! Here is the new PC, my pride and joy.

Now it's time for the new build's specs: Case: Corsair Crystal 280X MOBO: MSI B450M Mortar Titanium CPU: Ryzen 5 3600X Cooler: Corsair H100i RAM: 16GB of DDR4 Vengeance Pro RGB goodness, I'd say this is quite an upgrade from DDR3. SSD: Corsair MP510 480GB HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM PSU: Cooler Master V750 Finally, the thing that tied the build together: Phanteks Sleeved PSU Cable Extensions. The make quite the difference inside the case.

Some of the bumps I came along my PC building journey were actually really stupid but I'm not even mad that it took me 2 hours to pop out the Intel brackers on the cooler and popping on the AM4 brackets. What's even dumber is that I put the AMD brackets on the wrong way so I had to spend another hour trying to fix that in the morning. The other problem that I encountered was mounting the radiator. It was 4 hours of people trying to hold it in place while I tried to screw in the stupid screws. I almost went mad. It's jarring that Corsair, selling this cooler at $150, does not have some of the mounting holes for the screws so you have to use an inhumane amount of force and get the screws through the fins of the radiator by bending it. I searched far and wide on the internet and a lot of people has had this issue. Now, the part that really made me go insane was installing Windows and drivers. First, after reinstalling Windows like 4 times, I still kept on encountering a "Your PC restarted unexpectedly" error. I was able to fix this by navigating to the Registry Editor and changing a value of a file inside the Child Completion folder. Even though I was FINALLY able to install windows, I couldn't install drivers. I resorted to reinstalling Windows a few more times but that didn't work. Turns out, all I had to do was unplug my Audio Interface and POOF! WINDOWS UPDATES AVAILABLE!

Even though the process drove me insane, I'm happy that it did. It really taught me a lot and I hope to use all this information in the future when I build another PC.

I am cringing really hard at my 12 yo self's build but at least he was proud and he could play Minecraft with those shaders! I'm really happy with the new build even though I regret spending so much on the case and water cooling. I could've gotten a 3700X if I had done some things different but I'm not complaining at all. I've been really happy producing music in FL and Protools and it handles gaming like a beast.

Hope you guys enjoyed reading through my PC building experience. If anyone has any questions, I'll be happy to answer them to the most of my ability. Again, sorry if I made grammar errors since English is not my native language. May all your temperatures be low and framerates high!

    PSU with mysterious past

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 02:53 PM PDT

Hi, I'm building a PC and want to reuse an old PSU from a rig that died many years ago. I don't think the PSU was the cause, but I want to be sure it's fine. Would taking it to a local computer store and having the guy there run a multi-hour test on it be sufficient to tell if the thing will be dangerous for my new PC parts?

AMD incompatibility with my RAM sticks

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 02:52 PM PDT

Hello guys. Around 2 months ago I decided to upgrade my CPU from a i3 6100 for a ryzen 5 2600. Obviously I had to get a new MoBo and I went for a Gigabyte B450M DS3H that a friend had and sold me for cheap.

Here's where the trouble starts. New MoBo is not compatible with my old RAM sticks (Corsair CMK8GX4M2B3000C15). Now I have 16gb (4x4) and I have no intention of buying new ram. I have the chance to return the MoBo to my friend and get a new one without compatibility issues.

The thing is, I have tried my ram with one other AMD build and the problem remained.

How do I identify a MoBo that won't have compatibility issues with my RAM?

    Windows error

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 12:27 PM PDT

First of all, not sure where to ask, this might not fit perfectly in here... Feel free to recommend a better sub for such stuff. However, after the windows update yesterday I had the issue, that 1. My gpu had 100% spikes which caused heavy lags even when just reading a manga (so basically loading a picture) and I managed to restart my PC, it didn't work tho. After that the screen shortly went black, night mode bugged off (it is shown as turned on but actually is off, always happens when the monitors go off due to inactivity) and everything was fine. Thought, ok, maybe everything is ok now. However, I couldn't open Nvidia control panel, so I installed the latest driver. Now it worked. Later I got the same thing again, tho it was gone after a min or so. Managed to watch it on the task manager tho, it seems that it used 100% of 3D and an above average amount of dedicated gpu ram. Also, the programs causing the spikes were different, once desktop window manager and once blizzard launcher. So probably not those services fault. Now to the blue screen of death, I opened twitch in my browser, the internet connection got kinda cut and shortly after everything froze. After some time it blue screened with the error dpc_watchdog_violation. Maybe anyone can help?

The New Unpopular Opinion - Why You Should Wait/Time a New PC Build

    Posted: 11 Jun 2020 04:39 AM PDT

I saw a hugely popular post titled Unpopular opinion quit telling people to "wait for xxxx". Some of it is correct (you really should not wait more than 6 months because of new gen parts about to drop), but it does not address the very real issues you will have when you badly mistime the your new build. Lets take a look at the typical mistiming scenario, shall we?

After having saved for years, a person is building a top-of-the-line PC. They've been holding back for so long that now that they have the money it burns a hole in their pocket. They just want to get it over with so they can finally enjoy that new PC. They pick top of the line everything, and settle in for a good time. A month later they read the news and discover that the 1299 USD GPU they splurged for is now markedly inferior to a new 750 USD GPU from a competing manufacturer. In addition, the new one has a new cool feature that upcoming games will support on Ultra, meaning you just spent $1299 on a GPU and you can't even play newest games on Ultra anymore. Well, how about they sell the card and buy the new one then? They paid $1299 for it, they should get the most of it back, right? Wrong.

Every time a new gen drops, it drops the prices of everything that came before it. The GPU you paid $1299 for is now not even worth the $750 of the new gen on the street, but $500 due to it having 25% worse performance and being 40% hotter to run. But what can you do, so they bite the bullet, cough up the missing extra $250, and Bob's your uncle. They are now squarely looking in the face of essentially having paid $1649 for a $750 GPU, a scenario that could have easily been avoided if A) they had waited for a month or B) knowing that next gen is coming up, gotten a cheaper mid range holdover card instead.

The same goes for any highest-end performance parts that come at a price premium. If you are a short while away from next gen, and you can't wait, it's better to use cheap or mid-range parts as placeholders until the ones you really want become available. They don't depreciate anywhere nearly as badly than high end parts and you can use your new PC in the meanwhile.
