    £300 build complete

    Posted: 05 May 2020 06:31 AM PDT

This was my first ever build and I built this for my dad on his birthday. The cables are a bit messy but overall I'm happy with how it turned out.

Edit: I just wanted to thank everyone who helped me put together my parts list a few weeks ago, I love how the pc turned out.

Edit 2: Thanks so much for 1000 upvotes!

At 26 I finally own a PC, and it's a beast. Thank you everyone who helped me build.

    Posted: 05 May 2020 09:50 AM PDT

I know there are a lot of these types of post, and this will probably get buried, but there are certain moments in a man's life where he feels such a strong sense of emotion that he has no choice but to make a reddit post to express those feelings /s. In the past week I have realised a dream that, even a year ago, I never thought possible: I have built my own gaming PC.

    [Picture of the build here](https://imgur.com/a/AseokY9)

I have suffered from depression and mental health issues since I was a teenager. I won't go into details, because it's not relevant, but I have had to take a massive amount of time out of work, and ended up in a lot of debt, and there were times when I came very close to giving up. Thankfully, I stayed in employment the whole time, and managed to find a job that actually gave a shit. Through my work, I was able to receive an insurance payout to cover approx half a year of salary I lost, as a lump sum, from when I was unable to work. With this money, I have paid off all my debts, started a savings account for the very first time, and realised a dream I've had since I first saw my friends playing counter strike all those years ago, to own a gaming PC.

I wanted to say thank you to those on this sub, as well as those over at r/buildapcforme, for providing me with pretty much all the resources I needed to build my PC, as well as answering countless questions and ultimately, inspiring the belief in me that this was even possible. I implore anyone reading this who is hesitating about whether they are capable enough to build a PC to believe that you are, because there are a wealth of resources available here, on youtube, and on the wider web.

And to anyone reading this suffering from mental health issues, don't give up. I spent so many years believing that my life was never going to change, and I couldn't have imagined that my life could ever look like it does now. Your life can change very quickly, and as long as you have hope, you can endure until the day comes when things start looking up.

    Hello everyone,

I made this 3D printable mouse bungee because I couldn't find any that I could 3D print. All you need to do is print the model and buy the springs which are super easy to do and explained in the thingiverse post. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments.

Hope everyone is staying safe :)

Hi, all of my games crash during the play straight to desktop or stay on the black screen, which I can turn off with "sign-off". Sometimes I get the error "video card drivers crashed". I cannot identify the reason of the crashing. Can you please help?

    Fire Strike benchmark: https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/46505971?

Nothing is overclocked. How far did I get now: - I have connected 2 8 pin PCI-e cables to the GPU. - I have identified I had one 16GB DDR4 chip faulty, it made all the Fire Strike benchmarks fail. I took it out. - I have tested the remaining 3 DDR4 chips with memtest86, 4 passes, 0 mistakes. - I have tried underclocking GPU memory with MSI -300. No effect.

In the market for a 144Hz monitor but I've got no idea where to start or what to look for

    Posted: 05 May 2020 11:26 AM PDT

    Howdy,

I was wondering if anyone could help me out finding a new monitor.

I've just finished my first PC build (super chuffed with it despite all the stress) and to complete the build I'd love to pick up a new main monitor. However, I'm a total novice when it comes to really knowing your stuff about monitors and need some guidance.

I'm hoping to spend anywhere between £250-£350 ($311-$435 for the American pals) but if a decent 144hz monitor needs more than that I'll fork out the rest (or try to).

The thing is, I dont know much about the other specs of a monitor or, to be more precise, how important they are. I'd like a high resolution (e.g. 2560 x 1440) cus it sounds fancy but how important is it for the price?

I'm trash at explaining and waffle too much but I really hope I made enough sense.

    Thank you!

Ryzen 3600, RX 5700XT new build, blackscreens on game startup.

    Posted: 05 May 2020 12:01 PM PDT

    Parts List:

    https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/M4Jxjp 1440p 144Hz monitor AOC CQ32G1

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive. Just finished the assembly of my new pc, tried to test it by running PUBG, and the pc just blackscreens at various points, sometimes immediatley while starting sometimes in the lobby, sometimes when just loading into the game.

Also tried AC Unity and turned all the settings up, crashed immediatley after confirming the settings, now crashes on startup.

Tried stock Skyrim, which runs fine but is not really putting any load on the system.

Its not a temperature problem, monitored with adrenaline & core temp, at time of crash both cpu and gpu are below 60°C. Took a video of the screen with the temps, last frame before crash has CPU @ 58°C, and GPU Current Temp 54°C, Junction Temp 55°C.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Rebooted multiple times, upgraded the drivers from the recommended version 20.2.2 to the newer 20.4.2, no change.

Uninstalled the drivers, and some remaining nvidia drivers with DDU in safe mode, rebooted and reinstalled 20.2.2, no change.

I know the 5700XT had some problems but had read that the new driver updates had fixed that, is this something fundamentally wrong about the card? Anything else I can try to make it work or do I just have to send it back and get another or even switch to a nvidia card?

EDIT: currently only one stick of 8GP G.Skill 3200 RAM for testing, my own has not shipped yet.

Weird 100% CPU, only when booting games on steam

    Posted: 05 May 2020 05:12 AM PDT

I have been having a weird issue for the last few weeks, i can play COD MW all the time with no issues or stutters at all, but every now and then when i try to launch a game from steam the game wont launch, my CPU will be pegged at 100%, when i open task manager it will say "System interrupts" 100%, and even after a restart sometimes it will stay at 100% for 5-10 mins.

I have even stress tested the cpu for 10 minutes, temps never went over 58c.

I even went to the effort of fresh installing all drives and reinstalling windows which didnt fix the issue, i have updated all drivers including bios, event viewer isnt showing anything either.

W10: Reinstall vs. Clone - What to do after motherboard, CPU and SSD upgrade?

    Posted: 05 May 2020 01:52 PM PDT

I want to replace my old motherboard so that I can upgrade my CPU and replace my SSD. My W10 is currently installed on my 250GB SATA SSD and I want to migrate it to a new NVMe. Most of my data and games (Steam Library) are on a seperate HDD which I want to keep using, but I do have some apps and games installed on my old SSD.

There are different opinions online on how to handle migrating the OS. Some people suggest just cloning everything, others say I should do a clean, fresh install of the OS.

    I would like to know:
    1) Will it be fine to just clone my SATA SSD to my new NVMe SSD, even if I replace motherboard and CPU?
    2) W10 offers the option to do a reinstall while keeping all files and apps. What's the point of that compared to the reset or clean install options? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4000735/windows-10-reinstall
    3) How will it affect my Steam Library on the separate HDD (and other apps/data) if I do a fresh install of W10?
    4) If I do a clean Windows install on my new NVMe, wouldn't it be extremely tedious to install all my old apps, move all files and reconfigure all the settings etc.?
    5) If I clone my old SSD to my new SSD, how do I handle the drivers? Can I sweep them after cloning and install new drivers for my new motherboard and CPU?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Ryzen RAM is stuck on 2133 Mhz with XMP enabled - So angry

    Posted: 05 May 2020 01:43 PM PDT

Trying this again, because I'm struggling SO much.

    https://imgur.com/a/8cibaWt

I have 2 sticks of 16GB Corsair Vengance 3200. As you can see the profile is set properly, however on the right of the screen, the RAM is still well below 3200. No idea what my next move is. This is a Ryzen 3800x build on an Aorus Elite.

I do not want to manually set the voltage, I just want to enable XMP and be good to go, so this is infuriating.

Hey everybody, so I have only ever owned a laptop throughout college since that was all I could afford and I needed one, but I've always wanted to build a PC. I recently landed a really nice paying job, so I have a lot more money than I thought I would to build one. I majored in Computer Science so I know a decent amount about computers, although I am definitely not an expert when it comes to hardware. Anyways, $3000 is the max I would go so this build would be as high as I am willing to go, and I'm obviously open to price reductions.

In terms of what I want it to do, I want to be able to play pretty much any game at ultra settings. Currently I play Overwatch and Apex. I'm not planning on streaming or anything so the above build might be WAY overkill but again I'd like to not worry about purchasing any game like I have in the past. It seems like having a monitor that can run 1440p@144Hz is the most I would do, I don't think I would try to game at 4k.

I also want to use it for 2D and 3D game development. Obviously building a game isn't as intensive as playing one, and I'm not making triple A quality games, just hobby ones. I'd also like this to last a bit, so I'm willing to spend a bit more if it means I won't have to upgrade for a bit.

Lastly, I had a quick question: I want to get a second monitor, so would it need to have the same resolution/refresh rate?

Thank you thank you thank you to anyone who reads this and responds, I'm really excited to start my first build!

How to use my ssd to boot up windows while I use my hdd for the rest

    Posted: 05 May 2020 12:35 PM PDT

When I first built my pc about 2 years ago I bought a 1 tb hard drive. I just now bought a 240 gb ssd so I can be able to boot windows using the ssd and my computer can run faster. I have been trying to do this for a few hours and I can't figure it out. I have watched a few videos showing different things. I also downloaded a software to try and clone it but since my ssd is a smaller size it won't work. Any help is useful, thanks.

Memory speed locked to 2133 on Ryzen 3600 / B450 Tomahawk Max

Hey all, just doing a new build for first time in 7 years replacing an old Fx8350.

Got some Crucial 3600 memory - CMK16GX4M2D3600C18 but the mb is setting it to 2133. If I try any other setting it refuses to post with a CPU light on the board until I reset CMOS.

Tried updating BIOS, XMP and manually setting the DRAM timings. Am I doing something stupid ?

    MB - B450 Tomahawk Max CPU - Ryzen 3600 GPU - 5700XT Memory - 2x8Gb 3600 18-22-22-42

Edit - Thanks all, got memory to 3000 and stable, will play more with it in the morning and see if I can sort.

I'm looking to upgrade, keeping it as cheap as possible so probably only one thing - I assume the graphics card?

Would really appreciate some feedback, when I built the PC I knew a lot more about hardware, I've lost most of my knowledge now.

My current build (the important part)

    - i5 4670k 3.5GHz processor

Bought these parts at the end of 2017, as of late I've been getting some performance issues. For Dark Souls 3 I found it seemed that reinstalling it onto another harddrive fixed the problem. I got low FPS but was able to get my performance back through that fix. Ran BF2 (2017) perfectly a month or two ago, booted it up and was getting terrible performance, thought it might be the same problem so I reinstalled it, it ran terribly but then started to run perfectly fine. I ran cinebench for my CPU and got a score of 526, overclocked it to 3.9 at 1.375 volts to get 553, apparently, I should be getting at least 800? I'm unbelievably confused and I wish I had tested my CPU in 2017 to give a comparison. Any clues as to what the issue is?

    CPU+Case coolers

    Posted: 05 May 2020 01:44 PM PDT

    Hello!

I'm looking forward upgrading the cooling on my computer, i have the setup on the link with the stock cpu cooler.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/kgQy7T

My case looks like this right now: https://imgur.com/a/agzISm1

The fan on the front is taking air, the one on top is blowing it out, i have the feeling that those fans are not as strong as they should, im also unsure on how to make them work faster.

I couldn't install the fan that it's on top of the computer on the back as the usb docks from the motherboard were too big and the fan wouldn't fit in there, there may be the possibility that i can remove the thing that says "gaming pro", i think that's just decorative, once again, im clueless about that.

My cpu is sitting on idle at the attached image temperature (I just cleaned the cpu fan and changed the thermal paste yesterday)

    https://imgur.com/a/p4ofhL5

I'm also having issues with that EDC thing, i have tried several things to resolve that but i just couldn't fix it but that's another thing!

When playing games it reach up to 70ºC, which is not that bad but summer hits quite hot where i live so having 30ºC in my room compared to the 17ºC i have now will make a difference and i want to make sure the cpu doesn't get that much of a stress.

I'm not sure if i want to overclock as everything seems to be running smooth right now, maybe in the future i will, i'm looking forward to spend around 150€ on everything, tho if it would make a big difference i don't mind spending a little bit more.

Thank you everyone for your time!

Is the RX 5700 XT more stable now?

    Posted: 05 May 2020 05:26 AM PDT

Since 2 month I'm thinking about building a new pc. The most difficult decision for me is if I should go for the RX 5700 XT or the RTX 2070 Super. The RX 5700 XT fits better for my freesync monitor and my budget but I'm afraid it will be a mess because of the driver problems of which I can read in literally every product review section. I don't want to deal with unstable drivers and crashes. What do you think? Are the drivers more stable now? Are there less problems when it is pared with a new build? Maybe some who uses a RX 5700 XT can tell from his experience.

Edit: I'm trying to build a pc for 144hz 1080p gaming

Right now, I'm currently trying to put together a budget rig for a friend, but I can't find any 500 watt power supplies anywhere for a reasonable price. I live in the US for context.

Most of the places I searched like Amazon and Newegg, have very little stock and what they do have is quite expensive compared to what they were originally. I guess this whole pandemic situation is to blame, but I didn't expect it to hit the power supply market this hard since most of the other components are mostly unaffected.

I could go to a local Microcenter since they still have reasonable prices on their power supplies, so I'm not completely out of options. I just didn't realize the extent of how much this pandemic has affected the power supply market for online retailers.

    Frames in modern warfare

    Posted: 05 May 2020 11:20 AM PDT

Hey guys, not sure if this is the right place to ask for in game settings but I was wondering for any tips to get more frames in mw. I recently upgraded my monitor to 1440p 165hz. I was running a 1080p 144z before and i was max frames using competitive settings. I was maxing out my frames and now im getting around 120 framesduring game play. Im trying to see if i could get at lease 144 hz on my 1440.

My set up right now is a ryzen 3600x, 2070s, 16gb 3600. I don't wanna over clock because I'm still using the stock cooler. Also, would getting more ram better my performance? If so, by how much?

I also tried putting max performance for power output on nvidia settings but doesn't seem like its making a difference. Thanks and if you guys know other sub reddits to ask pls let me know!
