    Simple Questions - April 03, 2020

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 05:12 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

About to pull the trigger, any compatibility issues?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 06:30 AM PDT

I'm happy with the contents of my build and I understand it could be cheaper. Some of the choices that I made were for aesthetics whilst some are due to issues with covid and stock.

Can you please let me know if there are any issues other than the price?

I want to purchase my build today if possible

Completed my first PC build! One of the most enjoyable experiences of my life.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 08:22 AM PDT

First off, just want to thank this sub for even existing. It helped turn a long time desire, to a reality. Decided to finally take the plunge and build a PC. I do a lot of music production, but also wanted to get a decent ROI on gaming capabilities as well.

    Images: https://imgur.com/a/i93RfVo

Started with a budget of $500-600, but decided that spending a little more money now was worth not having to wait on the build for sales and what not. Ended up just under a $1000. I did have dual monitors already, so that helped the cost quite a bit. I am going to list off the parts and then explain some of my rationale behind the purchase in case other people see the post and are looking for some beginner decision making feedback. Would also love to hear everyone's opinions about spots that I could do better on, because this will absolutely not be my last build.

    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X (199.99)
    • MOBO: ASUS ROG Strix B450-F (122.99)
    • CPU FAN: Noctua NH-U12S chromax.Black, 120mm Single-Tower CPU Cooler (69.95)
    • RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB DDR4 3000MHz (81.99)
    • GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1650 Super (179.99)
    • PSU: EVGA 650GQ, Semi Modular (89.99)
    • SSD: WD Blue 250GB M.2 2280 SSD (43.99)
    • HDD: Seagate Barracude 2TB Internal Hard Drive HDD 7200RPM (49.99)
    • CASE: NZXT H510 (69.99)
    • RGB: 3 Phanteks Halos Lux Fan Frames 120mm (49.99)
    • Total: $958.86

CPU: Went with this one, as it seemed like a good middle of the road chip. Wasn't looking for blazing speeds for the price just yet, so this seemed like a good place to start.

MOBO: Honestly, I went with this one mostly for the looks of it. I think it looks cool, I like the integrated I/O panel and had plenty of USBs ports for my MIDI Instruments.

CPU FAN: This was a tough decision in retrospect. I actually wish I had just stuck with the stock cooler that came with the Ryzen 5 because the this fan is pretty clunky which I knew going in. I just didn't realize how big the thing was going to look. I know its a great fan, so I am not going to change it out, but in the future, I might just throw down some more money on a liquid cooler option.

GPU: This purchase is actually a good beginner tip. If the CPU doesn't say it has integrated graphics, you are going to need a GPU. I first started this build as a just a music production build, so I wasn't even planning on getting a dedicated graphics card yet, until a friend of mine pointed out a couple things.

One, dealing with integrated graphics coming from just the MOBO can be problematic and two, my AMD chip didn't (and most don't) have integrated graphics anyway. I chose this board, because it seemed like a good middle of the road card. I am going to start gaming more on a PC and this build runs COD/Tarkov pretty well.

PSU: Fully modular seemed overkill to me, as a beginner. This semi-model allows for some upgrades to use direct power, so that's nice, but I didn't have much in mind yet for it.

SSD/HDD: Wanted an SSD just for OS and some games. Quickly realized 250GB ain't shit when you play COD, so it's a Windows/COD SSD now lol In the future I would dish out for a 500GB. The HDD is a perfect size and price point. The case/MOBO allows for quite a bit of additions storage wise so upgrading would be simple.

CASE: Again a purchase made out of looks. Love the look of the case and it believe PCMR law to get a glass side to see the beauty. In the future, I would go with a case with front intake ability for fans. This one has it, but its a small side vent.

RGB: Went with simple black on most things here, because when it's off I wanted that matte black look, but dished out for some fan covers and will be getting some strips as well in the future.

All in all, this one of the best experiences in my life. I loved every second of the build, the research part was tedious, but when you're spending this much money, I think it should be. Beginner advice; you don't need the most powerful machine the first time. Get a build you're comfortable with to learn how to actually assemble it (YouTube is a godsend), and in the future you can continue to do research and see what's out there.

Again, would love to hear peoples opinions of the build!

    My First PC Build!

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 02:15 PM PDT

Over the past six months, I've been collecting parts to build my first custom PC as often as I could afford them. As of yesterday, all the parts I needed had arrived, and mere hours ago I began the honestly daunting task. Thanks to the help of a couple of friends, the process went smoother than I could've ever imagined... and it posted right away! The only problem was that I didn't seat one of the ram sticks in fully but that was a super easy fix. Thanks to everyone and everywhere that helped me, especially all the people here in r/buildapc and over at r/buildapcsales! You guys are the bomb! Pics of the build and base bench. PCPartPicker list. Some GPU performance per watt research I did

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 12:11 PM PDT

To me personally Performance per watt is very important. I prefer to have a quieter rig, then a super beefy rig. For my CPU, I have a Ryzen 3700X and I have undervolted it. It is currently running at 3.9 GHz and at idle runs at 35 W and running cinebench will push it to 75 W. So this is all to say, that I prefer my PC to run quiet. I have had both AMD and Intel CPUs, and AMD and NVidia GPUs in the past. My current PCs are Intel 2500k w/ RX 570, AMD FX-8320 w/ RX 570, and a Ryzen 3700x w/ RX 5700. I have run into a couple of bugs with the AMD gpus recently and today while working on my main rig (RX 5700), I got the infamous black screen. It was the first time this has happened to me on this card, I have had it with the RX 570 where if I turn on the PC before the monitor, the monitor will not detect the stream, but today I had it go blank in the middle of my job (working from home, because COVID-19).

Well I decided to do some research, just in case it repeats itself, so that I know which new GPU to go with if I needed to sell my RX 5700 and get another. And this is the list I came up with, I just thought since I did the research, it might come in handy for someone else: https://imgur.com/8bYxbks

    Sources of Information:

    https://www.techspot.com/review/1870-amd-radeon-rx-5700/

    https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?N=100007709%204814%20601202919

edit: Also I did do a fresh install of the newest radeon driver, so I am hoping that will do the trick and I wouldn't need to switch out the graphics card, but I was bored and wanted to do some research for fun anyways.

    AMD Ryzen vs Intel i9?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 02:57 PM PDT

I've been building myself Intel PC's for years, and haven't until recently considered AMD. The Ryzen 3900x is intriguing, however the more i read about it, the more finicky they seem to be...whether it's AIO cooling, board/overvoltage/temp concerns/RAM compatibility...My intel machines have been rock solid over the years, and i just want to make sure before i go down the Ryzen path, that I'm not trading off stability for incremental performance gains.

    Complete beginner

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 12:11 PM PDT

Hi! I know next to nothing about computers, but I've become interested in building my own desktop. I don't game, or need anything fancy. Primarily want to use it for work purposes, and figured with the virus shut down it would be something productive for me to do. If anyone has any product lists, or can recommend resources/websites for beginners I would be really appreciative.

Like I said I'm just looking to make something very basic. Budget $300-400 dollar range. Thank you :)

    Building my brother another computer

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 07:41 AM PDT

Hello, I used to be big into building computers but now it's been a few years and I haven't really kept up with all the releases and specs and such. I am building my brother his second computer and this time he has a much larger budget so I wanted to see others opinions and see if there are any problems with the part list. As far as I know he wants to be able to game at 1440p 144hz at high settings for most mainstream games. I think he is also interested in streaming/broadcasting and getting into content creation. Here is the parts list:

I also have a few questions before ordering. For the power supply is 750w overkill or is it fine as we will be over clocking it? Will running the SSDs in raid0 be fine with this motherboard? Also for the SSDs would wd black be any better than the Samsung 970 evos and would they be compatible with the mobo as I couldn't find this information online?

Is an i7-3770 3.4 GHz CPU still viable today? Would it deal well with a solid GPU upgrade?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 03:19 PM PDT

Running the above mentioned CPU with a GTX 1050 2GB and 16 GB DDR3 RAM and it seems like my rig struggles to run most modern games above low settings on 1080p. Would it be worth it keeping my current rig and upgrading to a much nicer GPU? Or would my CPU be holding it back, and I should consider replacing the CPU as well?

Installed new RAM and now my PC is boot-looping.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 12:23 PM PDT

So I have an Alienware Aurora R4 (multiple parts in it have been upgraded now). It's been working fine mostly but I've been getting a lot of lag when editing videos and playing games due to their only being 8gb of RAM. When the quarantine started I decided I'd upgrade to 16gb, since I'm out of work and have nothing to do with my time other than use my PC.

I used Corsair's website to scan my computer and see which RAM would be compatible. I then double-checked it elsewhere and all seemed okay so I went for it (Crucial 8GB kit 2x4gb DDR3L-1600 UDIMM). I installed the new RAM and started up the computer, and I just get a blank screen before it restarts and does the same again. I do a bit of googling and it seems to be 'boot-looping'? I check the BIOS for to make sure all the settings are correct (which they seem to be as it auto-detected that I'd changed RAM). Suddenly, after leaving the BIOS without changing any settings it starts up just fine and is working perfectly. In task-manager it said I now had 16gb of RAM (with 15.9 usable) and normal tasks that would usually be taking up 70/80% RAM usage were much lower. I decided to restart the computer again to see if it was just a fluke and it immediately goes back to boot-looping. Then after another few restarts it launched windows again as normal before going back to boot-looping again.

I'm totally lost as to what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated - it's not an ideal time to lose access to my computer with the whole lockdown and all.

    I'm running Windows 10, Nvidia GTX 780 Graphics Card, Intel Core i7-3820 @ 3.6ghz.

SSD recognized in BIOS but not listed in bootable devices

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 04:18 AM PDT

    Hi Everybody,

    What I have: Fujitsu Esprimo P558/E85+ (MI6W) With a proprietary D3600-A14 GS1 Board

    SSD: SanDisk SSD Plus SDSSDA-120g

I hooked up the SSD to power and SATA header. BIOS seems to recognize the volume but does not register it as bootable device...

impression of my BIOS experience: https://imgur.com/a/T8DnP3A

    • BIOS is at Version 5.0.0.13 and stated itself to be up-to-date
    • BIOS diagnostic tool tested drive successfully
    • Drive currently has win10 installed
    • Drive booted with no issues in previous Win10-System
    • The target System previously had an M.2 Drive as OS volume

Is this PC limited to only boot from M.2 or something? Am I missing an option to add my SSD to the boot opions list?!

    thanks for your thoughts, hay

    For a GTX 1660 Super, should I get a 1080p 144hz monitor, or a 1440p 144hz monitor?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 01:30 PM PDT

    As the title says.

I'm upgrading my 75hz 1080p monitor and 1060, and wanted to know which option is better.

I mostly play Apex (need high fps), and the occasional AAA game. (Planning on playing RDR2 and Cyberpunk 2077 soon)

And as much as I appreciate the thought, I can't afford to go higher than a 1660S,

1660s is $290 but, 2060 Super/ RX 5700 is $470, and even the 5600XT is $400. (Yes pricing is dogshit, but that's the situation w all our taxes here)

I can afford to upgrade from the 1080/144 to the 1440/144, but not in combination with a GPU increase too.

And yes these prices were taken into account with me selling my existing gear.

    So what's the verdict?

    Upgrading a pre-built PC from 2017, help!

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 03:31 PM PDT

I bought a prebuilt PC back in 2017, and it's done me up until now. I'd like to upgrade to something more usable. Basically, I want a different case and I want to install an SSD as well, so thought why not upgrade some other things while I'm at it? I don't do a whole lot of gaming, but that's on account of the PC being too slow to run. It also gets very loud. Anyway, thanks for your help! :)

    Current PC specs:

    Processor Intel i5-4460
    Motherboard Gigabyte GA-H81m-H
Graphics Card Nvidia GeForce GTX 960 2gb
RAM 8GB, not sure of the make or model, sorry
    Storage 1TB HDD
    Case Non-branded thing.

Hardware is harder than I though.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 03:33 AM PDT

So I'm looking to build myself a gaming PC that will last without needing to swap hardware too soon. Problem is, I've never done it before and could use a few opinions.Going for a $3, 500-$4000 AUD budget(flexible).

I assumed with the video card that VR might be gaining some real traction soon, so I decided on an RTX 2080 chipset with 11gb, but let me know if this seems like a waste.

    How does this look?https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/7qMrWb

Also noticed the list stated that physical dimensions of the parts can't be verified and was wondering if anyone had anything similar to this/knew enough about it to be able to tell me whether or not I'll end up with a video card/ram etc. that just wont physically fit alongside one another...

EDIT: Might swap the case to a full, just realized it's a mid.

    Gaming pc for bro [1080p]

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 04:44 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Hey guys, my little bro finally decided to join the pc gaming masterrace, I couldn't be more proud. Now he has asked me to come up with a build for him. I came up with the one below and I'm wondering if all of this is compatible.

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do) Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better. Gaming, 1080p, all sorts of titles, nothing has to be ultra quality - from Classic WoW, Minecraft, Factorio, CS:GO to the latest titles should just run fine.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings) 1080p, 144hz screen, non ultra quality is fine.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? Around 1000€, less is better

In what country are you purchasing your parts? Netherlands

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!). PCPartPicker Part List

Let's get right to the chase here

    X570 aorus ultra Ryzen 3600 Tridentz Neo 16gb 3600mhz

The board requires a 8+4 pin power connector. I do not have that specifically. I have set up my cords using two 8 pin connectors leaving some pins hanging.

    powering on looks like this

I have reseated my cpu and ram. And nothing has changed
