This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Help, i lightly bumped my computer it shut off and won’t even boot up.

    Posted: 29 Jan 2020 08:33 AM PST

I lightly bumped my computer it shot off and makes no attempt to boot when I hit the power button. I know my PSU is working because I have a tester. I've triple checked all my connections. Does anyone know what the problem might be? The light of the on button doesn't even appear, it's as if the button isn't working but i dont know what the problem is.

New PC build not turning on, not sure why

    Posted: 29 Jan 2020 12:14 PM PST

Hey all, so my new PC build I'm working on won't power on and I have no idea why. First, specs:

    Mobo: Asus rog strix b450i

    CPU: R5 3600x

GPU: msi gtx 980 (from old PC)

    SSD: Intel 660p 1tb

Ram: Trident z RGB 3600 MHz

    Psu: Corsair sf600

Plus random fans and air cooler.

So this is my third PC I've built so I don't think I'm making some stupid newbie mistake. What I know:

Motherboard, ram, SSD, and power supply works, uses my friend's 2200g to power the rig on and update bios to support ryzen 3rd gen

The CPU is probably not dead. The first one I ordered the PC wouldn't turn on either, so I sent it back to Amazon and got a replacement. Doubtful I got two DOA in a row

Graphics card worked fine in my old PC, never had any hiccups.

With the 3600x, the motherboard RGB lights are doing their thing, so it's getting power.

Completely lost on what to do. All cables are plugged into the motherboard and GPU. Power supply is obviously turned on. I can't even short the pins to turn the PC on.

Rx 580 vs gtx 1650 super

    Posted: 29 Jan 2020 10:22 AM PST

Both have comparable price and performance at the moment. 1650 super has more efficient energy consumption, better thermals, and gddr6 vram, while the rx 580 has double the vram. Which do you think will be better in the long run?

Planning on Building My First Gaming Pc. Need some advice.

    Posted: 29 Jan 2020 01:14 PM PST

So my old gaming laptop is way out of date and I have been wanting to build a PC for awhile. I don't want to spend too much but I also don't want to skimp out and feel the need to upgrade in the near future. That being said, I have put together a parts list currently at around $1900 with windows 10 and a monitor. I was hoping to be around the $1500 mark. Any recommendations on some parts I could go cheaper on without effecting performance too much, or would it just be worth it to save up the extra few hundred dollars.

    Build list:

[~$500] Little bro wants a PC and I made a quick part selection on PC part picker. help me tone down.

    Posted: 29 Jan 2020 08:56 AM PST

So recently my little brother has been wanting a PC for his highschool work / mid tier games it seems.

He has a PS4 so Ive made it clear to him that his main gaming platform will be the PS4 and not the PC. He still wants to be able to play some games such as: xcom2, Halo wars 1/2 and Gears tactics.

I have made a quick PC that I know I went overboard on for what he is going to do with the PC, so please help me tone down the pc build or save (his own) money.

he has about $500 so spending should be around 500 or less.

(Desperate, please help) PC boots into bios but not into Windows

    Posted: 29 Jan 2020 01:21 PM PST

Built a PC, successfully installed windows, booted into windows 10, changed the resolution to 1920x1080 and it black screened. Now it won't boot into windows at all, it'll show the windows logo and the circle below it moves before black screening again, it usually crashes the same time my mouse and keyboard light up.

I've successfully gotten into windows twice but only after reinstalling it

    Build

I've used this GPU for two years on my old build so I'm fairly sure it's not fault, Not sure what's up, please help.

It goes into BIOS just fine and everything shows https://i.imgur.com/3m1WtKe.jp

When it black screens the GPU fans cut off

I've been going at this for two days. I've built a PC once before and it went fine and I'm honestly at my breaking point here.

11 years on a 37" 1080p 60 Hz TV. Done lots of Googlin' on how to upgrade, but now I need help with anecdotal evidence and experience from you guys on upgrading to a real monitor.

    Posted: 29 Jan 2020 09:28 AM PST

    My current build:

    • LG 37LH30 from back in 2009 (37", 1080p, 60Hz, 50,000:1 contrast ratio (this may become relevant later))
    • GTX 1070
    • i5-9600K CPU

I have a few questions based on the research I've done. Please give me your experience if you have something to input:

    1. I'm used to a HUGE screen 2 ft away from my face. Movies are epic. Games are even epic-er. Am I going to lose a lot of that by dropping 10 inches with a 27" 1080p or 1440p monitor? I assume "Yes" with 1080p. But will it be less or more noticeable with 1440p?
    2. I have a second monitor - BenQ GL2450 24" (1080p, 60Hz). It doesn't really fit next to my 37" now so I'm not using it, but I could move it in for any extra "screen real estate" I might want. Wouldn't this make the 1440p less necessary?
    3. I know that Ultra settings on a GTX 1070 never get me (or many others) to ~144 FPS. It tends to be in the 80-120 FPS range depending on the game and settings. Doesn't this mean I should aim for staying at 1080p and just upgrade from 60Hz to 144Hz?
    4. Or, should I aim for 1440p 144Hz, get used to lowering game settings to Medium-High-ish, and enjoy watching the monitor get better and better as I upgrade my GPUs over the next 10 or so years?
    5. Most if not all of the games I've played lately only go up to 1080p. I figure this is probably because games auto-detect my resolution (though I don't often see an option to choose resolutions above 1080p). So if I play a game that only goes up to 1080p and I have a 1440p monitor, won't my experience really suffer? Currently if I drop from 1920x1080 to something like 1768x992, I REALLY notice the awful fuzziness, but maybe this is just because I have a huge screen with big pixels?
    6. Using reviews from RTINGS.com and Hardware Unboxed, I think I've narrowed down my choices to two monitors: The ASUS VG279Q 27" (1080p, 144Hz, $289) and the LG 27GL83A-B 27" (1440p, 144 Hz, $379). Both G-Sync compatible as of latest nVidia drivers, and Hardware Unboxed just named the LG 27GL850 as the best 1440p gaming monitor, which is almost the same as the LG 27GL83A-B. Which do you think I should get? Or maybe something else?
    7. There's an issue with contrast ratio on the 27GL83A. It only seems to go up to 894:1 (1000:1 is advertised). The 27GL850 is a bit less at 762:1, which is "really weak" for an IPS monitor according to Hardware Unboxed's 27GL850 review (12:41). My TV is (likely over-advertised) at 50,000:1 contrast. Though it's showing its age the blacks are still very black. Anyone with an 27GL83A or 27GL850 that can clue me in on what I'd be getting myself into? Would I be going from black (my current TV) to a nasty gray (LG monitor)? My room is usually very dark so I'll notice it more.

    Thanks!

Should I consider getting a bigger SSD?
Should I consider getting an additional SSD?

Been building for 25 years give or take, never used anything other than radiator style coolers, so I need some guidance on which AIO will work best for this CPU and case combination?

And since I am here, how does the build look? Primarily a gaming machine, possibly throw my plex server on it as well but do not know yet.

I want to build something with enough longevity to last me at least midway through the next console generation at least. I want to be able to play newest releases on 1440p with at least 60fps. Let me know if you think this will do the trick for awhile or what I could do to make it better!

System was giving BSOD issues with 4 rams so I took out 2 rams (slot 2 &4). System stopped BSOD. I then removed those 2 rams & put back other 2 rams in the same slots.PC was still working. BUT it gives BSOD again whenever I use After effects or other heavy softwares.

Dilemma about positioning my PC case

    Posted: 29 Jan 2020 07:49 AM PST

    bad drawing of my room

As I'm working on getting my own little corner, I started building my first PC (previously only laptops).

I've come to a dilemma about placing the PC case. It may be a stupid question but I always say "he who asks does not err". Since the power outlet is to my left there's no point in placing it all the way on the right (which is what I will do in the future for sure to make sure of the tempered glass).

The question is how would you put it take make the most sense?

I feel like there are three options.

First, on the floor closest to the power outlet (negative about that would be connecting my mouse cable).

The second would be just on the left facing back (all cables being closest to me) but then idk if the table wouldn't bend in some way (Ikea Bekant) even though it can hold up to 100kg i'm scared.

The third to put more balance in the middle to put it behind the monitor (negatives being cables once again)

Also I don't want to drill any holes in the desk and it has a net for cable management underneath.

    Compact ATX Case?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2020 11:35 AM PST

I'm looking for a compact ATX case. I'm trying to find one that puts the power supply behind the motherboard tray, does any one know of a case like this? Closest I've found is the Riotoro CR1080. But it makes the entire computer upside down which wouldn't be an option for the way my desk is set up. Thank you in advance.

    Posted: 29 Jan 2020 09:30 AM PST

I have had my first build for almost a year now, and recently when I watch video (youtube mostly but happens in other apps as well) I will hear a sound like my computer is spooling up and the video and audio will glitch and stutter for a matter of 10 to 30 seconds and freeze my mouse, then returns back to normal use. You can see the RGB lighting reset its cycle during this too. Any ideas?

Want to get back into PC gaming, please check my build?

Hi, it's been about 10 years since I last got a new PC, and that was a prebuild. I really appreciate any guidance on this build I put together on pcpartpicker. I'm going for 1080p 144hz gaming.

It looks OK to me but it'd be good to have more eyes on it. Thanks!
