    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Did I brick my 1TB SSD by performing a "clean all" (diskpart) function on it?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 05:38 AM PST

    Troubleshooting Help:

Parts involved: ADATA SU800 1TB SSD Gigabyte Z170 XP SLI

Secondary SSD prevents normal bootup when plugged in. Shows Windows logo with spinning dots underneath it for hours until Driver PNP Watchdog error occurs. If I unplug the SSD it allows me to get to the Windows sign in screen.

Once I'm signed in and plug the SATA cable back in, after a minute or so the SSD shows up as "unknown device" under disk drives in Device manager. When I try to populate drive information I get an error that "Volume information cannot be found".

The disk shows in Disk Manager as Disk 0 after rescanning the hardware (takes like an hour to scan). And shows Disk 0 as an uninitialized drive. When I go to initialize it I get an invalid command error.

In diskpart I do not see the disk when I do "list disk" command but I can still select the disk ("select disk 0") even though I do not see it in the disk list. I can do this ONLY after it appears in disk manager, otherwise it says disk does not exist. Any function I try to perform on the disk in diskpart says that it is working with a drive that is not up-to-date.

Everything that I'm reading online indicates those are symptoms of a bad drive. The drive is less than a year old and still has a warranty, but I'd like to try and fix it if it's possible.

    Thanks for your time.

    How to ground my cat

    Posted: 21 Jan 2020 07:30 PM PST

So lately my cat likes to come by while I'm at my computer to solicit pets. Not a problem usually, she's very cute. However now that it's winter and the air is a bit more dry, she generates a lot of static electricity. I usually get a shock a few times a day.

Unfortunately my tower is located on the ground, sometimes she likes to rub against it. The static electricity she generates probably won't reach any components, right? Everything is closed properly & it's a plastic tower. Am i being paranoid? Has anyone had component failure due to cats?

I can't move my tower due to space restrictions & I can't stop petting my cat for obvious reasons.

P.s. this is a serious question

    5700XT no display on startup

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 12:20 PM PST

    Specs:

    Cpu: AMD 3600

    GPU: AMD 5700xt nitro+

    PSU: Corsair 650 M Bronze80

Ram : 16 GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200 MHZ

    Motherboard: MSI x570 gaming plus

Problem: On startup, the card lights up and fans spin but we do not receive any monitor display. We do not even reach a bios logo just a monitor "no signal" error.

List of troubleshooting steps we have taken:

    1. The display is plugged into the GPU. We have tried multiple different cables and monitors all did not work.
    2. Cleared CMOS and motherboard battery.
    3. Tried PCIE 3 and 4, also tried a different slot for the card.
    4. Turned on UEFI boot. turned off secure boot. Pretty much every different form of booting we have tried switching on and off.
    5. We tried it in my system with literally the SAME specs for everything except I have a cheapy 1000w PSU. Other than that everything is the same and it booted with a display.
    6. We are using a single pcie cable that splits into a 8 and a 8. We have heard its better to have a single but we do not have an extra one.

    Any help is appreciated.

    GTX 1060 and 4K screen

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 05:42 AM PST

I'm looking to do an incremental upgrade towards a desktop. Starting with screen.

That might result in me having a 4K screen and a laptop 1060 though for a while. Naturally that won't fly for gaming, but how about videos?

edit: To be clear the 1060 will be replaced with a more powerful desktop card at a later stage. (1660/2080 etc)

(Bonus question - thoughts on gsync vs freesync? Screen choice appears to force my hand on GFX team later, correct?)

Successful BIOS update bricked Mobo mins after logging into W10

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 12:37 PM PST

preface: long post; TL;DR at bottom

this has been one of the strangest occurrences in my 15 years of PC building. so i have:

    -Asrock Taichi x370

    -Ryzen 1600 14nm (2017)/stock cooler

    -2x8GB 2400mhz DDR4

    -Geforce 1050 TI

the BIOS came with ver. 2.20 and worked fine running W7 ultimate (all security updates) using Wufuc. Successfully updated BIOS to 3.30 but would BSOD when trying to log into W7. Surmised the issue was W7 didn't like the new BIOS update since technically the X370 chipset doesn't support W7.

tried installing updated chipset drivers, among other solutions but no go. so i reverted back to 2.20 and was working fine again.

W7 was going EOL soon this month, and my W7 install was kind of messy with the solutions i tried so i'd figure i'd just install W10 LTSC. it automatically installed chipset drivers and peripheral drivers afterwards. updated to BIOS to 3.30. worked fine throughout the whole day. the next day was still working fine.

updated BIOS to 5.10. it was successful. booted into W10 as well. installed nvidia geforce drivers automatically. a couple of minutes later, PC hard crashed with the screen frozen. Restarted PC, it would power on, but would not POST, display would show no signal.

used my backup ATI 7770 HD, same result. used my 1050 TI on my secondary Q6600 PC and that wouldn't POST either now. using the Q6600 PC with the 7770 HD works though. so not only is my mobo dead, i somehow killed my 1050 TI too.

too disheartened to continue, i left my PCs alone for 4-5 days. i powered up the Q6600 PC w/ the 1050 TI just for kicks, and VIOLA it POST. Installed W7 on this PC.

ran across an issue when trying to install an older geforce driver (399.24) for the 1050 TI. device manager showed it stopped the device because it has problems (code 43). did a DDU under safemode, installed the latest drivers (441.87), and now it works fine for the past 48 hours.

im still unsure about the 1050 TI. i could stress test it by running furmark, but im tentative to do so because ATM i can't take the chacne to afford to destroy my GPU since during all my troubleshooting, found out my 7770 GPU has its own issues of BSOD w/drivers installed when logging into W7. the 7770 HD has been used for 5+ years, and then has been unused in 2nd PC for close the 3 years aftewards, so it could very easily just be a GPU failure at this state. i bought my Ryzen setup summer of 2017. i was able to get an RMA for my motherboard. their initial post wrote:

Since the latest version of bios is for 3rd generation and your is 1st generation , you need to RMA the board and write the bios version works fine with your processor (P3.30)

hopefully my CPU and RAM still works and if so im just going to stick with the BIOS version 2.x or 3.x. it is strange though; i've built a handful of PC's in the past: Athlon XP series, my current Q6600, and i'd always update to the latest BIOS after a couple of years down the road w/o any issue. maybe the issue has to do with BIOS being replaced with UEFI, i dunno.

TL;DR: successful BIOS updated bricked my MB shortly after booting into W10. May have also damaged my Nvidia 1050 TI in the process. Status of CPU and RAM is unknown until i get my replacement mobo.

Would I need to upgrade my graphics card?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 01:50 PM PST

    Hello friends,

I'm wondering if I should look into upgrading my graphics card. I currently have a Sapphire Nitro Radeon RX580 (with an i7-8700). I have two monitors: a 27" IPS 4k screen for my graphic design work and another 27" IPS 1440p, 144hz monitor for gaming. I may add another monitor as well.

For my work process I use Photoshop (with a lot of 3d effects/rendering) and Illustrator, but I am looking into using Cinema 4d for some 3d work in the future (~1 year or so). For gaming, I just play League. Nothing too demanding.

If I need to upgrade, which AMD card should I look into? I split my time between windows and mac/hackintosh so AMD is preferred.

    Thank you!

Found an RX 580 for a suspiciously low price ($169.99), but it's got good reviews on every website I've found it being sold. Do I take the risk on it, or would that be a waste of money?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 01:28 PM PST

I hope this doesn't fall into the "other" category, so if that's the case, apologies.

But yeah, I found this bad boy on Best Buy (that I might be able to get for even cheaper cause my friend works there), but I'm the low price looks a bit sus to me? Idk, last time I looked at graphics card (about a month ago, but budget reasons meant I couldn't buy one then), the 580s were like, $400??? And now I'm finding a good few that are just below $200. Did something change in the market? Or should I still go for the more expensive ones like the Sapphire cards?

Also, I originally built my rig with productivity in mind, so I've not got any problems with the rest of it that I'd have to take into account. Dunno if that's info y'all need but here it is just in case.

Edit: Now that I'm looking, the 590 has way higher ratings and is only a bit more expensive. Should I just go for that?

Edit 2: Also, I realize now that I'm wildly misremembering how expensive the 580s were. I'm so scatterbrained that you'd have to vacuum up the pieces, so I'm not surprised I had that wrong.

Old PC gifted to me. Wondering what i need to do in order to run games.

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 10:20 AM PST

My uncle-in-law gave me his old desktop with the hard drives wiped. I've recently installed Windows 10 Pro x64bit on to the PC and i am just trying to find out what i need to do in order to make sure everything is operational. i've recently tried to run some games from steam and either i get error messages when they start up or i get a black screen but the game is running still, just no visuals (i can still click on the menu items and hear music but all i see is black). is there a way i can check off a list of Drivers needed to get my PC fully functional or perhaps will i need to upgrade some of the hardware?

    Hardware:
NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT (downloaded most recent driver which was from 2016)
    Intel Core i7 950 @ 3.07GHz

    Hard drive bay

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 12:16 PM PST

I'm not sure if this is where this post belongs, but I don't think I'm directly breaking any rules

I recently revived a gaming pc from a family member. It's an excellent PC, but for some reason it doesn't have a HDD bay, only a 256 m.2 ssd. So I'm not really sure where to go from here.

    pc keeps crashing without overheating

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 02:12 PM PST

my pc crashes in games without ever even getting to 50°c

cpu: intel i5 9400f (stock speeds with stock cooler) ram: g.skill aegis 16gb ddr4 gpu: zotac gt 1030 2gb gddr5 low profile motherboard: msi h310m pro-m2 plus storage: kingdian n480 120gb ssd + 2tb hdd psu: evga 500w 80 plus

i've tried underclocking my gpu with afterburner and that fixed the problem. but i tried the same gpu on an older pc (an optiplex 755) and functioned perfectly normal at stock speed. i want a solution to get the gpu at stock speed.

update: i increased the amount of voltage allowed by the gpu all the way up to 100% in afterburner and it didn't fix anything. luckily, nothing broke either

    Build for nephew - any

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 02:10 PM PST

    Part list:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/kvrKcq

    Parts I am ordering:

Checked with the seller on the motherboard - they are now shipping gen 3 ready.

He wanted a NZXT case but needed something small too. Chose the 210 to meet these request.

He won't be overclocking, I have the Noctua cooler left over from another build. The brackets are Intel but Noctua sells an AM4 bracket for $9. IMO its more quite than the AMD stock, temps really are close. (Noctua seems to be very very slightly better)

Ryzen 5 3600 - Getting a deal too good to pass up, or to spend the extra money on the 3600x.

All other parts are left over from past projects.

He is 13 and his games are not very demanding. Figured this would give him a PC strong enough to handle just about anything at 1080 and probably some at 1440. Also would give him a nice starting point to dive into upgrades, etc. as he so chooses.

1080p at 60fps with as close to maxed settings as we can get.

    What is your budget (USD)?

    $900.
In reality its $1k, but sales tax and a windows key are taking a chunk.

Computer freezing for 30 seconds consistently on new build, besides SSDs

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 01:27 PM PST

My old computer froze a lot, so I built a new one and the only part I swapped over were the 2 SSDs. It's two Samsung 256gb satas ran with RAID for the OS. I know this isn't software forum.. so direct me if I'm wrong. But what's the move here? Can I feasibly swap my OS to new drives? Would I have to buy another Windows OEM key? (just did that since new motherboard).

99% of the time it happens when gaming.. that's where my confusion comes from. Why would SSDs freeze my computer for a game that's already installed? I'll take any advice.

New build - No display and case fans won't turn on

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 01:13 PM PST

Just finished my new build which I have been waiting to do for a very long time. After finally buying everything and putting it all together the case fans won't turn on when the PC is powered and there is no HDMI signal going to either or my two monitors.

I have tried the following and nothing has worked: -reseated both of my 2 RAM sticks -reseated my Gpu -reseated CPU -reset CMOS -tried a boot with and without Gpu installed -checked all wired connections and redid them -turned PC on and off, holding power button for over a minute -tried plugging into differ power sources (surge protector and battery backup/surge protector) -connected HDMI cable to MOBO, then tried a connection to Gpu -tried two different monitors that I know work -swapped out cables that I know work -reread MOBO manual to make sure everything was in correct places

The CPU fan is working fine when powered on, only concern is the thermal plate had paste on it when it arrived and I used that paste instead of my own. Also, none of my USB slots seem to work for my keyboard but I figure it's a driver update that will fix it. Im thinking about trying a displayport cable instead of HDMI but not sure if it will make a difference. As well has applying my thermal paste to the CPU.

My specs are: Motherboard- Asus prime z390-a GPU- msi GeForce RTX 8gb gddr6 2070 super CPU- i9 9900ks 4.0ghz CPU fan- Corsair H100i RAM- 2x 16gb ddr4-3600 tridentZ neo PSU- Corsair RM 750

    [Troubleshooting] New PSU, dead SSD?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 08:39 AM PST

So I had EVGA GA 750w PSU, did an RMA and got GQ 850w as a replacement.

older PSU was fully modular, and new is semi and cables are different.

But I got lazy and didn't swap out the cables (I didn't think much of it, thought it's just a cable), and looks like my SSDs that were connected via SATA cables are dead. Older cable was of sleeved design, and new is ribbon. I took a look at the cable connection, looks like the "empty" prong on both cables are different, lesson well learned!

Is there a way to bring those SSDs back to life? Connecting to SATA doesn't seem to work -- nothing reads it. not in bios, not in device manager. But when I do connect it via usb adapter, it's reading something, but I can't seem to do anything with it.

Any tips? I've tried Power cycling (30 minutes powered without data, repeat) but can't seem to revive it. I would hate to throw away a 500gb ssd if I can help it.
