Nothing Happened When I Flipped the Power Switch for my First Build...Please Help Posted: 15 Jan 2020 08:06 AM PST Hello people smarter than me, First off, here is my entire build. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/YkhgzN I am really bummed to be posting this. I am writing this post at work so I do not have any pictures, but I can upload those if need be tonight. I decided to build my first PC ever (I was super hesitant about this. This whole process was not as fun or rewarding as you all made it out to be lol), and I really just want to play the outer worlds. So I used Paul's Hardware, LTT, and Jayztwocents for videos and read all of the manuals for my parts. I assembled everything to what I thought correctly, putting together the pc was fairly easy and simple. I fumbled a little with understanding the power switch and power reset cables, and which pins I plug those tiny wires into. And the AMD stock fan was hard to install a little as well. I saved money aside to upgrade the cooling in this pc as well if I saw the temps running to high but I was told I could get away with what I have for now. However, I digress... So nothing happened after I flipped the power switch. I can confirm I checked to make sure the PSU was plugged in! I do not want to take it in somewhere just yet. What are the first steps I can do to trouble shoot this issue? If you decide to respond, thanks in advanced! TL:DR: What are the first steps I should take to troubleshoot if nothing happened after I flipped the power switch? [link] [comments]
Just built a PC with some clients! Posted: 14 Jan 2020 09:25 PM PST Just wanted to share, I'm in 8th grade and just finished building a pc with some 4th graders. I recently built a personal pc, and I started a business where you can learn about PCs and build one yourself. Just wanted to share to show that any kid can be an entrepreneur if they try. Having "fun" installing my Noctua cooler today... Posted: 15 Jan 2020 06:50 AM PST I installed my cooler on my motherboard today, and was feeling good about myself until I noticed... https://i.imgur.com/6t0GMz2.jpg The edge of the cooler extended right over the video card slot! Oh crap! I thought I'd be okay, as I'd watched video of someone with a Noctua cooler installed on the exact same motherboard when I was picking parts, and the video card (just barely) fit. But then I went with a different model cooler because of RAM clearance. I must've screwed up! I've wasted my money on this cooler, and will have to put the stock cooler on instead... Wait a minute, is the cooler asymmetrical? It thought it was symmetrical when I was installing it, but clearly it isn't. I see, I've put the damned thing on backward. *sighs* Then I installed the motherboard in the case and started screwing it into the stand-offs. But there was one screw, right next to the cooler, that I couldn't reach. A screwdriver won't work in that narrow space because it's at a bad angle for it. Sticking my hand down near the optical drive bay and stretching my fingers into that area let me just barely touch it with the tip of one finger, no way to screw it in like that. No way to remove the top of the case to get access. Can't just take the cooler off and put it back on after the motherboard is screwed down, because I wouldn't be able to plug the fans back into the board, as the cooler overhangs the headers. Would I just have to leave one stand-off unscrewed? The one right next to the giant super-heavy cooler? Hell no, that's not an acceptable option, I needed it screwed in. So I tried a bunch of stuff and eventually my ingenuity came up with this solution: https://i.imgur.com/bPoTlRg.jpg And that's not all the "fun" I had with the cooler today. The 12-volt power connectors on the board were almost unreachable, at least to someone with huge hands like mine, because of the size of the cooler. This is what they look like: https://i.imgur.com/I0GYXAS.jpg Took me ages to get them in, although a lot of that was my fault. First I assumed you needed to plug in both, but apparently you only need one in unless you're doing some extreme overclocking. Second, I assumed that I should be putting an eight-pin connector in the eight-pin socket. Stupid me. After a lot of frustration fiddling around with a plug I could barely reach with the tips of the fingers of one hand, I finally realized that it wasn't going in because the 2+6 pin connector was keyed slightly differently to the socket, so even though I could get the 6-pin part of the connector on the 2-pin part wouldn't fit. After checking the other plugs on my PSU and finding that none of them fit I checked the manual and found out I could just put a four-pin connector in. I hope my video card arrives soon. It's sooooo close to being useable. [link] [comments]
Thank you, Internet! Athlon II X4 640/Geforce 8800GT ---> Ryzen 3700X/5700XT Posted: 15 Jan 2020 12:30 PM PST https://imgur.com/a/YxGsYwL I built this PC a little while back. It was my first time building. Special shoutout to GamersNexus, Bitwit, and Paul's Hardware for their thorough build tutorials. One year ago, I started researching on reddit, youtube, and other tech sites, vowing that it was finally time to get a new gaming desktop. I've been using this ancient Athlon/Geforce, which was handed down to me, for the past 6 years. It was already ancient back then. But it was a big upgrade from my last new desktop in 2004 (Athlon 64 3200/Geforce 6800GT). I rarely play consoles nowadays. So I'm blown away by the graphics of modern games and how smooth everything is. Even "old" games from 5+ years ago look amazing. I was playing at 1080p/60hz before my new monitor arrived and I thought everything then was so smooth. Playing at 1440/144 with adaptive sync is stunning. Posted: 15 Jan 2020 06:26 AM PST Pc case- Nzxt H510 - $70 Cpu-Ryzen 5 2600 - $115 (I also got the amd wraith max with it for free) Gpu - Red Devil 5700 - $350 Psu- Thermaltake 80+ white 700w - $50 Mobo- Msi B450 Tomahawk - $112 Ram- V color prism 16gb 3200mhz - $70 Hdd- 2tb wd blue - $52 Ssd-250gb Kingston - $30 Total - $880 basically I also bought extra fans for $30 which someone recommended me. Everything I brought is new from Amazon because I felt comfortable buying from there and the prices were the same on Newegg. My friends keep saying I mostly over payed on the gpu because I could have gotten it for $300 instead if I looked (which I did) or the xt for $350 which again, I tried. They don't understand that the red devil 5700 xt is $450 new on Amazon and when I looked, a used one was $425. The 5700 is $380 new but I found another new one 5700 for $350. Also, they only built 1 pc before as have I. Please tell me, did I over spend on the pc? Because hearing this constantly, is getting annoying. Sorry about the formatting, I'm on mobile. Project Energon - custom wall mount PC Posted: 15 Jan 2020 07:31 AM PST Hi all, I'm basically done with my custom built wall mount PC - I've got a lot of cable management yet to do. But since I'm using this now as my main workstation, I wanted to show it off some even in it's incomplete state. I've built many a computers in my day, but I've never tried for a water cooling build, nor a wall PC concept. Lots of potential for failure here (and I absolutely made a lot of mistakes), so it took a long time for me to complete. I took a lot of pictures through the process and put together a gallery here: https://imgur.com/gallery/FZQcNrX I was absolutely inspired by a bunch of creative individuals who made a bunch of wall mounted PC's, and did it far better than how mine turned out. So thanks to all of them that sent me down this path. [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 Jan 2020 11:10 AM PST Just bought an M.2 and i plan on placing my operating system and maybe a couple games and programs. I want to know how i can transfer those files to my m.2, thanks :) [link] [comments]
I believe my new $2k build is complete, any tips or thoughts? Posted: 15 Jan 2020 01:04 PM PST My old build (since 2015) is a 980ti, i5 6600k, 16gb DDR4 2400. I am bringing my 2015 EVGA 850w 80+ gold PU and a 3tb HDD from my previous build into this new one. I am wondering if this could be an issue and if I need to get a new PU as well? This is just a pure gaming build. I understand I could save money by getting a B450 motherboard but I want everything to work out of the box. I am also bringing my Acer XB270HU bprz as my main monitor with the KG as a secondary. The 2080 Super will be replaced by the new 3080ti (or whatever they end up calling it) later this year. Any thoughts or last minute tips would be appreciated before I go to Micro Center to purchase this weekend.

Before I build my pc(should I) Posted: 15 Jan 2020 01:23 PM PST Almost have all the components however I read there is a chance of shorting components. If you don't wear or reduce the static running through your body. Is it worth botching an anti static wrist band, if so how do I home make one? Is a ryzen 2600 good by itself or will it need a CPU cooler? Posted: 15 Jan 2020 08:01 AM PST Currently building a PC and found out CPU coolers are a thing, will I be good with just having 3 fans or will I also need a CPU fan cooler? [link] [comments]
Posted: 14 Jan 2020 04:22 PM PST 2018, took me all this time to get photos for the flex, too busy playing the Witcher 3. Got the RAM on discount thanks to you guys. [link] [comments]
Thoughts on this $1000 gaming rig? Posted: 15 Jan 2020 08:27 AM PST Intended to play WoW, Skyrim, Witcher, league, and any other games I come across that I want to play. Thanks! edit: should I consider switching the 5700 TX to another card due to driver issues? [link] [comments]
4670k to 6700 - worth the bother? Posted: 15 Jan 2020 10:38 AM PST I currently have a 4670k but for reasons I don't care to explain it's on a Q87 board so I can't even OC beyond just turning on XMP. It's paired with a gtx1070. I have an opportunity to salvage an old Dell office machine for a 6700 with a compatible mobo and ram. Is it worth the effort? My objective is to try and stretch my current hardware a bit longer, at least until Zen 3 (assuming after Computex this June). My biggest issue is COD:MW absolutely wrecks my system and I read that having more cores, or at least hyperthreading, might help. Other games in current playlist: Siege, Overwatch, Battlefield V, GTA5 all of which run 1080@60 reasonably fine. [link] [comments]
Should you format your HDD after formatting your main SSD? Posted: 15 Jan 2020 02:17 PM PST I got myself a new motherboard and a CPU, just finished installing it all (I'm going water cooling next time), and currently formatting my SSD, which Windows was installed on. Question is, should I also format my secondary storage HDD? It's full of games that I really don't feel like reinstalling, but I'll do it if it's necessary for optimal performance. Thanks. Need advice on which 140mm fan to buy. Posted: 15 Jan 2020 02:13 PM PST I used to have Corsair LL 140 RGB fans. The iCue software was causing very serious problems for my PC. Crashes, no signal to monitor, RAM lights lighting up on my mobo...it was crazy. I finally uninstalled iCue and have not had any more issues. Now I'm going to return those fans to amazon and buy two new 140mm fans. I want simple fans with no RGB...can't deal with that headache again. I am leaning towards noctua fans. I'm just not sure which ones to buy. I have a modest build parts list: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/slimjim345/saved/#view=W3dbjX GTX 1060, no overclocking. I've never had a problem with heat but then again I don't really monitor it. I trust my mobo to power up the fans more if heat becomes an issue. Should I buy the "quite" noctua fans with a max rpm of 1500? (or aparently 1200rpm max if you use their low noise adapter? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CP6QLY6/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A1Z5H6ZGWCMTNX&psc=1 Or their "industrial" black fans that range from 800 - 3000 rpms? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KFCRF1A/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_3?smid=A1Z5H6ZGWCMTNX&psc=1 I can't decide. I'm sure the brown ones are quiter and I doubt I need 3000rpm. But idk, maybe it would be nice to have that at one point. Will I be fine with the cheaper, quiter ones? Thanks for any advice. Original intake was just a big 200mm fan that came with the case. That one went bad and now I'm on a journey to replace. [link] [comments]
High pitched ringing when PC is off coming from new motherboard (570x-E Strix)? How can I fix Posted: 15 Jan 2020 02:12 PM PST I have unplugged everything and the noise is coming from the motherboard, when the PC is off but the powersupply switch is on. (By on i mean the pc is off, but the power supply is supplying power so the RGB lights turn on). If I unplug the motherboards 24pin it stops, if I flick the power supply switch it stops. The main annoyance is that this PC is in my room and I can hear it when I try to sleep.... [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 Jan 2020 01:58 PM PST Hi, I current;y I have an I5 6500 and am looking to upgrade to get better performance gaming. I mostly play rainbow 6 siege. Looking at what fits on my current motherboard I could just get an i7 6800k for about 280 new, but that seems like a crazy price to spend on a 5 year old CPU. For about 20$ more I could get a ryzen 5 3600 and a b450 tomahawk motherboard to support it. Is there an advantage to getting a new motherboard? Which of these options make the most sense? is there a better option in the same price range? [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 Jan 2020 01:54 PM PST I am about to build a PC, any suggestions? I'd like to stay under $700 Pc: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Bananaz21/saved/#view=zCcfP6 [link] [comments]
This is my idea for a $1,500 pc build. Any thoughts? Posted: 15 Jan 2020 01:48 PM PST I'm going for a balance of looks and performance as much as I can. But, if there are some other alternatives that are very similar, please let me know. I have like 3 weeks until I'm going to start ordering all of the parts. My requirements are close to 240fps (like at most 40 fps off on avg.), 1080p, VR capable, Video and photo edit, and do 3D rendering.
Edit: Here's the link. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jmwmx6 Also, could someone find me a minimal case in black? Thanks. [link] [comments]
I wanting to build my own case. Posted: 15 Jan 2020 08:41 AM PST I was just wondering if anyone had a website or anything with any insight. I'm wanting to build a full tower. But I don't know where to start to look on how to build the frame to hold the mobo, hard drive housing, etc. I'm wanting to build everything myself. I may steal a thing or 2 out of an already built case. But from scratch for the most part. I know I need measurements of everything. But I need to know screw placement of everything and how it needs to sit in the case and so on and so forth. I found a couple of DIY cases, but they're all mini-itx form factor. But any info would be great. Thank you in advance. [link] [comments]
Can I use 3 ram cards simultaneously? Posted: 15 Jan 2020 11:25 AM PST One of my current ram cards seems to have broken. When i get a new set l, can i leave my old but still functional ram card in, for a total of 3? (24gb) (Old is G. Skill Ripjaws X 28 gb cards, and im thinking ill get the Corsair Vengeance Pro 28 cards next) [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 Jan 2020 11:24 AM PST I am looking to upgrade my CPU and motherboard on my build.
If need be I assume I might also need to upgrade RAM too since I am currently on 16gb DDR3. I'd like to move up to a full sized motherboard. I was wondering what parts would be best that would be affordable for around $200-300. [link] [comments]
Cheapest possible CPU/GPU for X-Plane 11 VR? Posted: 15 Jan 2020 01:36 PM PST Apologies is this is out of the usual scope of questions. I'm building a PC for a friend, and I'm looking for X-Plane 11 VR specific advice. He's trying to keep costs as low as possible and has no intentions of ever using this PC for anything but XPlane 11 VR. Period. He also has no aspirations of graphics beyond a clear cockpit and basic terrain detail with a Rift S. I was thinking a Ryzen 5 3600 + RTX 2060, but I'd love some feedback. Can I manage to go even lower in specs like a Ryzen 5 2600 + 1660Ti? Or do I need to go higher? The recommended specs are readily available online, but I know X-Plane can be pretty finicky with components. Thanks for the input! [link] [comments]
Advice please on a new build for iracing/sim racing Posted: 15 Jan 2020 01:34 PM PST Hi everybody, I recently got into sim racing, specifically iracing and I'm going to be building myself a machine to play on in the next week or two. My ultimate plan is to run triple monitors and I'd love to be able to run medium to high settings for most graphic options on triples. My budget is as far under $1,000 as I can be. I put together the following build that I think would work well for my purposes but I'm looking for options, opinions, issues or any insight the more experienced people here can share with me.
