I just wanted to say thank you to this Subreddit.

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 11:12 AM PST

About 2 weeks ago I was freaking out over CPU temps, motherboard and CPU issues, and overall stress with building my PC. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who takes the time to help others who are also having trouble with the computer builds, upgrades and troubleshooting. Thanks to everyone who helped I was able to build a new computer with confidence, gain an new appreciation into what goes into them and actually have fun putting it together instead of stressing out.

    So Thank You!!

I know it was bad with stuttering and black screens but I heard the new update fixed most problems but i wanna know if it's worth it compared to a 2070 super? I dont care about RT or streaming but if I can save $100 I will. If not, then oh well.

Edit:Wow thanks guys for the responses! Really appreciate the input!

I'm a bourbon fan, so it's cool as a showpiece. I'm very curious about the light in the top-left, though. Anyone recognize it?

My PC starts and shuts off when I try to turn it on. The LED lights, fans and everything goes on and then off within seconds. But when I tried it in a socket where there is no earthing, it worked fine. What is the issue here?

How Can Heavy Vibrating Harm a PC?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 01:11 PM PST

Built my computer the other day. I noticed that when the GPU is under high loads the case vibrates. It doesn't matter how I screw the card in, it vibrates the case. I know the fans on the card are crappy. I just wanna know if this could damage other parts.

tl;dr: will a vibrating GPU under high loads damage parts?

*I may have fucked up big time. I had taken out the CPU to reapply thermal paste and when I put it back in the PC powered on momentarily - I realized I hadn't switched off or unplugged the power supply. I immediately turned it off, reattached my cooler then tried to power on multiple times, and it would power on for a couple seconds then shut off instantly. In a small brain moment I realized that I had left a couple metal nuts lying on the motherboard. I took these off and tried to power it on again, and this time the build stayed on but my motherboard stayed on the yellow DRAM light without booting. How badly did I fuck up? Is there a chance my ram/cpu/other parts are ruined? I've already ordered a replacement for my motherboard but I wanted to know if I need to potentially replace other parts as well. *

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

So far as per ASUS support I've removed and inserted the CMOS battery, and also tested the build with single ram sticks in each slot to see if that's the problem.

Is this a monitor or GPU problem?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 07:59 PM PST

https://i.imgur.com/COeeKvk.jpg It happens with one specific GPU only. So I think its a GPU problem. It also happened on 2 displayports and 1 HDMI port. Didn't try the other HDMI port. On another GPU I never had this issue.

This PC is roughly 1.5-2 years old.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Games freeze and then crash to desktop within a few minutes of starting, longest play-time was about five minutes but has also happened as soon as the match loading. Seems to be for any game. No artifacting, stuttering, heating issues or other symptoms that I am aware of. Hell Let Loose sometimes lists an Unreal Engine failure, but this is limited to that game. Other games such as Battlefront 2 and R6S crash too.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Updated gpu drivers to most recent version, then installed a slightly older one (but newer compared to what he had before the issue) when that didn't work. Updated bios . Re-seated ram and swapped slots from 1/3 (Had been there since install) to 2/4 (where they should have been from the start). Tried each stick by itself, but I think he limited it to one slot (#2) rather then go through all the possible combinations. Ran Microsoft memory diagnostic tool. Updated windows. Ran virus scan. Installed msi afterburner and checked temps/usage during the brief times a game ran. GPU and CPU run at very reasonable temps with nothing seemingly out of the ordinary performance-wise. Userbenchmark rated his build highly with only the ram and SSD out of the ordinary until he re-seated it and renabled xmp (not sure why he had to re-enable it).

    https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/23839951

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I'm having him swap out his GPU with a friends' and update his drivers to test it. The computer has not forced shut down that I am aware. He is currently unable to get his advertised ram speed even with xmp enabled on a updated bios (I think it's at 2133hz). If swapping the gpu doesn't work (and I don't expect it to since there aren't any graphical issues), I'm going to have him try reinstalling windows before he replaces his other parts.

He is not happy about the possibility of buying new parts, but I am recommending that he buys a 3600x and b450 T Max and new RAM if nothing else works. I'm curious if this could be PSU problem, but my understanding is that usually there would be system shutdowns.

    There have recently been power-outages.

    Thanks for any help/advice.

5700 XT Nitro+, Ryzen 3600x, Aorus X570-I, Corsair SF750, fresh windows 10 Pro. Constant BSOD and no bsod crashing. More info in post including things I’ve already tried.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 08:14 PM PST

[SOLVED] Thank you for suggestions. For anyone who might see this trying to troubleshoot their own system. As of 19/01/20 I flashed BIOS version F10 for the x570-i. I also changed the PCIE setting from auto to PCIE 3.

This is where your mileage may vary: In windows (getting in via either igpu, an older gpu or safe mode with networking with 5700XT) I downloaded and installed the latest AMD driver. I then downloaded the chipset driver from Gigabyte, which seemed to override the AMD Adrenaline driver (UI was the old watt-man era look). I then installed the 5700XT, which booted to windows, running the latest AMD driver (don't know what happened here, but I am not going to question it so as not to jinx it)

I hope this can be of help, I know how painful it is to find old threads where an issue has been solved without saying how.

Parts listed in title are all brand new.

I get a BSOD any time I try to install AMD drivers, with BSOD on boot until I remove the drivers in safe mode.

The system is stable and AMD software can be installed when my old RX480 Nitro+ is installed.

However, the 5700XT is completely stable in my old system too (i7 6800k, MSI LGA2011 pro, RM850i)

I have tried the RM850 with the new system.

Tried old ram in new system.

Tried old OS drive in new system.

    Checked all power connections.

BIOS recognises cpu, ram and Pcie.

The furthest the system has gotten is past post, windows boot and logged in. Total crash after a few seconds at windows desktop.

    I am absolutely stumped

    New build - please help!!

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 07:35 AM PST

Hello community! This is actually my first ever post in a thread like this and I think you guys might be the best help for me at the moment.

I recently completed my first build and upon switching on the power supply, without pressing the power button to boot up the computer, the PSU makes a clicking noise and the motherboard resets every time the PSU clicks. Every click, the mobo flashes a red light and the code on the digital reader states "00" which I believe means a CPU problem, it does not explain why it resets upon each consistent clicking of the PSU.

With that said, I believe I saw a slight spark near the GPU which is not what I expected and I'm very pissed off that I may have screwed up my first build. Has anyone experienced this before? I wish I could post a video to explain but it won't let me on here. Specs below:

    • ASRock z390 phantom gaming 6 -Intel i7 8700k -gigabyte GEFORCE RTX 2080 super -HP ultra M.2 SSD/Samsung EVO SSD -Be Quiet! Dark Rock cooler -32GB Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB RAM -EVGA 850W 80+ gold PSU -Mid size Meshify-C tower (fractal design)

If I have to take the whole thing apart to see what it might be, I'd understand, I figured I'd just come here first to see if I could get some brief pointers. Thanks guys!!

Fell in love with onboard GPUs a couple of years ago. What now?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 01:39 PM PST

I built my last PC without a GPU. Since I'm not a gamer, I figured it saves me money, noise and makes the build clean and simple.

A lot has happened in the last couple of years and I feel like my choices aren't that simple anymore. I used to go with Intel, but it seems like AMD has the edge currently. Unfortunately their APU choices seem to be rather limited.

I'm a Linux guy and I want a snappy PC for 4k video (+second screen), browsing and some rather simple applications. I would like to go for quality parts this time, but getting a GPU still feels unnecessary.

    Any ideas?

High Performance at best cost. Thoughts?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 11:27 AM PST

** Posted on r/buildmeapc as well. Not sure which one was a better fit. Delete if not acceptable

This is the first computer I have built in over 10 yrs, so still learning all the new features available. While my computer is still running, it's really starting to show it's age, especially on the applications I run. I don't upgrade often unless it's a huge performance bump like HDD to SDD or a newer graphics card, so longevity is important for me. This means, I'll probably stick with the processor for many years (another decade?). Let me know if I'm missing something or could do better to save a little cash without sacrificing performance.

    Applications / Functions:

    • Web & Desktop app development (Visual Studios, SQL Server, other IDEs)
    • Machine Learning / Data Science processing
    • Creativity (Lightroom, Photoshop, Premier Pro)
    • Gaming

    Additional Info

    • Max budget $3,500 (but lower is better)
    • Ports - board I selected has all I need for now, but may change in future.
    • OC not really that important for me
    • Like to game, but primary focus is on productivity, so GPU I think is acceptable (white to keep up with a white and black theme).
    • Somewhat quiet. Been flip flopping on RGB (I like shiny) or a more silent build (Noctura CPU cooling and fans). Part of me wants to
    • Monitor selection is based on limited research. IPS ideal, but open to other/better suggestions.

Appreciate any feedback. Thanks in advance!

So, I found all my parts..... Except for a keyboard.

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 01:35 PM PST

Yup. The keyboard is apparently the hardest part to find. I'd prefer an mechanical keyboard, but I'd also prefer not to pay 100$ for one.

I'm in Denmark, and it seems like keyboards like Tecware Phantom, Redragon K552, Anne Pro, tada68 etc. aren't available here. Right now there's a HyperX FPS Alloy Pro TKL on sale for 60$ nearby, but I can't figure if it's good value or not.

Every recommendation is highly appreciated, thank you in advance.

    First PC Build

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 06:33 AM PST

    Hi all!

Completed my very first PC build yesterday. THANK YOU to this community for your guidance and support while I pieced together all the parts. Special shout out to the discord group for your tech support during build day.

    Pics: https://imgur.com/a/dVk3a68

Some notes about my first build:

    • Install went ok overall besides using the wrong screws for the motherboard standoffs (oops).
    • I also had issues getting my BIOS to update but that has since been solved.
    • Cable management at the back was more difficult than I thought. I did my best but could not get it to where I would ideally like.
    • The part list below does not have the exact prices I paid. The monitors for example are roughly $100 more than I paid for each. Most of the parts were purchased during boxing day sales here in Canada.

I haven't done much game testing yet but I did run Sea of Thieves on mythical settings and was seeing 100-140+ FPS which made me very happy.

What is wrong with my i7 4790K? Running hot and slow(ish?)

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 01:20 PM PST

This may not be the perfect subreddit for this but I know you guys are experts at PCs. If I should post this somewhere else, let me know.

My i7 (4790K) sits at 70 degrees while idle, this doesn't seem right, and I seem to be getting performance issues. Perhaps my performance issues are caused by thermal throttling? Playing challenging games seems to max the CPU out when others with the same CPU seem to be fine.

I bought it second hand. It doesn't seem to have been fiddled with as in the BIOS everything is set to 'auto'. Although, I've never overclocked a CPU or anything so my knowledge is lacking. I've even redone the thermal paste to be sure, and doing that didn't change anything. Here is what I can see.

    CPU frequency 4401.13MHz

CPU core ratio 44 (I notice cores one and two are 44, core three is 43 and core four is 42)

    XMP disabled

    CPU vcore 1.5V

    CPU vrin 1.776V

CPU fan speed while idle 2288rpm

CPU temp while idle 70 deg

    System temp 34 deg

I don't really know what Im looking at, but looking at the various sliders the turbo power limit seems low sitting almost fully to the left at 88 Watts, though is still set at auto. Core current limit is 105 amps though also auto.

I have a GIGABYTE motherboard. I was browsing all these stats in the BIOS when trying to sync my cores, as that apparently helps with performance, which I couldn't end up working out how to do. Do I sync cores by making the core ratios all 44? Sorry for the noob question.

I welcome any comments from anyone with experience with this i7 or CPUs in general. I'm reluctant to fork out for a new CPU and motherboard until I am sure what I currently have isn't performing, and I'm not confident of that atm.

I can provide other stats if it will help diagnose. Thanks!

    New Mouse

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 01:20 PM PST

I am looking for a new gaming mouse, I already have a g203, a corsair harpoon wireless and a deathadder elite v.1. I am switching because I don't like the feel and have medium to small size hands. My budget is 20-30$s and it would be best to be a name brand. Amazon has a lot of older logitech and Razer options but I am not sure what is best. Thanks!

Computer is blackscreening after parts upgrade

Originally: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/sageth/saved/#view=C7Cy4D Never had any errors with this build, ran smoothly 100% of the time. No blue screens, black screens, anything like that.

Around the holidays, I decided to do a massive overhaul to my system. This is the upgraded build: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/sageth/saved/#view=khjcTW Main changes include a new processor, MOBO, PSU, more RAM, and a new CPU cooler

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive. But now, it randomly blackscreens. No error messages, no signs of anything wrong, just a completely unexpected power off. I've tried doing a bit of surface digging into the crash logs, but to my very limited knowledge, there is no way of seeing why it blackscreened, it just says 'an unexpected shutdown occured'.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem. I've done a bit of troubleshooting, but nothing has really come of it. My initial suspicion was overheating, but after running thermals on both my GPU and CPU, they are more than golden. After that, a friend suggested it may have been DOA ram, so after running windows diagnostics on each of my 4 sticks one-by-one, they all came up clean. I was at a bit of a loss after this, I did some tinkering in the chassis itself, but nothing really caught my eye as "this is wrong". After doing more research later, my current suspect is CPU burn-in, but I have no idea if that's right, how I would test for it, and more importantly how I would fix it.

Provide any additional details you wish below. I've updated all my drivers, system updates, literally anything and everything on my system that could been updated, I went and updated it just to be 100% I'm running everything how it should be. That cut down a bit on my blackscreens, but they still come up, which is a massive issue since I love playing competitive and time-sensitive games (things like high-level mythic+ in World of Warcraft). I can't have random blackscreens happening, screwing both myself and my friends over. I am more than happy to post any additional follow-up information, or pictures if needed (I don't see why they would be needed, but I'm at a lost so any info that could help, I'll provide).
