    Simple Questions - December 19, 2019

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 04:09 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

What video card should I get?

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 07:11 AM PST

    I currently have:

    Ryzen 5 3600

    GTX 1080

    Corsair LPX 3200 16gb RAM

    21:9 3440x1440p 120hz monitor.

Basically I'm finding it hard to get frame rates above 60 on most AAA games. Just wondering if I'm having an issue with my video card or it could possibly be another component.

    Thanks for any advice :)

Edit: Thanks for all of the feedback everyone. Sorry I wasn't a little more clear in what I was asking, but the majority of the answers were what I was hoping to get from this. :)

    The Perfect Gaming Desk

    Posted: 18 Dec 2019 02:39 PM PST

Im trying to see how much do everyday gamers really care about their desks? How important is the desk to them and why? I know personally I would look for quality as well as style, cable management, etc. Since everyone is different in tastes i was hoping to here some opinions on what they consider to be "the perfect desk"?

Edit 2: Now we're getting somewhere! As i read these comments we typically see that cost drives the overall decision. So with cost being an important factor, what are you willing to pay for a quality desk that looks nice? How much is to much, even knowing you're taking a hit on quality or features?

Edit 1: After reading several posts and comments I see IKEA come up a lot. Not trying to dog IKEA but in my experience IKEA products tend to fall apart on me after a few years.

-- With this being said IKEA sells furniture cheaply, and we all know cost is a big issue when buying anything, but does cost make or break your decision in buying a desk? Wouldn't you rather buy something once and have it last instead of buying a piece or furniture you know will most likely fall apart?

    Thoughts????

Having a bit of a dilemma regarding x570 motherboards. Could use some advice.

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 05:34 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm currently putting together my first build and I'm currently stumped on selecting a motherboard. I've narrowed it down to two options: The Aorus Pro and the Aorus Ultra. My issue is that Gigabyte for some stupid reason, chose not to release the Pro Wifi in Europe so I'm stuck deciding whether to go for the Pro and buy an additional wifi card or say fuck it and buy the Ultra. Point is; I definitely need USB-C, Wifi and Bluetooth. Also quite ridiculous that one has to pay £300+ just to have post code display and a clear CMOS button.....

This is my build so far. Feel free to scrutinise.

Why do people prefer mechanical keyboards? Also, keyboard and mouse recommendations.

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 06:30 AM PST

    Hello!

I've seen on previous posts that people are rather dismissive of membrane keyboards and prefer mechanical ones. I've had the offer of a new keyboard and mouse for christmas and, having only used membrane keyboards as far as I'm aware, thought I'd ask what the difference is. In short, what's the big deal about?

Also, if you had to recommend a keyboard and mouse at the moment, what would it be? I'm still using an old dell keyboard I got for free along with a gigabyte M6900 mouse.

Killer E2200 Gigabit Ethernet, not achieving 600 mb/s

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 04:29 AM PST

My internet supplier is selling me 600 mb/s, which I know I have since I hooked other PC to the Ethernet and it reach them.

I have an MSI FX990 Gaming motherboard with a Killer E2205 Gigabit Ethernet/lan, and I upgraded the drivers and followed all instructions here https://support.killernetworking.com/knowledge-base/optimizing-e2200-e2400-e2500-advanced-driver-settings/ and here https://support.killernetworking.com/knowledge-base/ethernet-link-speed-capped-at-100-mbps/ and nothing there solves my problem.

What on something holy is happening? what can be the cause? :/ my computer should get the 600 mb/s, but it stuck around 380/400 mb/s. Also my PC build is almost the same as the other pc I connected and got the 600 mb/s, but with plus 8 GB ram, (mine is 16 and the other 24).

    Thanks for your time :)

Double Slot Card and this Motherboard ?

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 04:34 AM PST

    Hi all,

I am trying to build something like this for video production/editing (NOT gaming) and SOME CAD programs.

I noticed that the Video Card is double slot.

    1. How do you pick a good motherboard?
    2. Will that Card work well with the motherboard i have?
    3. How do you know WHEN you have enough Slots?

Anyone see a problem with this board and video card COMBO?

Thanks very much for your help!

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

When I select "shut down" in windows, and then press the power button to start the system, I see MSI splash screen but then it says No signal and goes into power saving mode.

However; if I then press the restart button during this issue, everything boots up just fine. Also, if I want it to work normally on the initial start (after shutting down from windows) I have to cut the power to the entire system; switching the surge protector off then on and only then will the initial press of the power button have everything work as intended.

Recently ordered the parts for my first build, taking advantage of some Black Friday deals. Researched and tried my best to choose compatible and up to date components and watched some videos on assembly before I started. Overall the assembly process went fairly well, except at one point I was worried about MB or CPU damage when installing the Wraith cooler. It was very difficult to put on the clips and I worried that I put a lot of stress on the MB and CPU... Eventually I got the clips on and hoped it would be OK.

    • Installed RAM to the recommended slots.
    • Installed graphics card to the 1st PCIe slot.
    • Installed both Samsung EVO NVMe cards.
    • Installed MB spacers into case and mounted the MB
    • Installed new Corsair case fans to a single 4-pin splitter, and then that to a 12V fan module on the MB
    • Installed the front panel I/O, to the MB.
    • Installed Power cables (the 24 pin ATX, 8 pin AND 4 pin CPU), PCIe power to graphics card etc.

Finally it was time to boot...

    Big Issue

    • No response or indication of power on motherboard. Toggling the power on/off did not cause the computer to POST. No fans spinning up or sounds, nothing!
    • GPU LEDs lit up, so there was power getting to GPU.

    Troubleshooting:

    • rechecked front I/O connections and compared to manual, seemed correct.
    • rechecked for loose connections, especially CPU power and all connections seemed fine.
    • RAM and graphics card appear to be installed in the right order and place.
    • I had the HDMI plugged into the graphics card. I also tried the MB but there are no integrated graphics so I didn't expect that to work.
    • Checked the PIN Out of the Corsair CPU power cables, although the shape between EPS/ATX differ it appears that the voltages were correct and in the right location (EPS/ATX 8 pin and a EPS/ATX 4+4) was used, but please see my question below.

    Next Steps and Questions:

    1) Can someone comment on why the Corsair uses an EPS/ATX 8 pin cord instead of just an ATX/ATX cord? Are these truly cross compatible, and is the PSU correct for this MB?

The EPS side is able to be plugged in easily to my MB (didn't force it) even though the connectors don't have a perfect shape match (in this case the rounded pins on the EPS cable can fit into squares, but not vice-versa).

    https://www.corsair.com/ca/en/Categories/Products/Accessories-%7C-Parts/PC-Components/Power-Supplies/Type-4-Sleeved-black-8-pin-%284%2B4%29-ATX12V-EPS12V-Cable%2C-compatible-with-all-CORSAIR-type-4-pin-out-PSU/p/CP-8920141

    https://forum.corsair.com/forums/showthread.php?p=984454&p=984454

    2) Should I remove the graphics card and try again? Don't I need the graphics card to view the BIOS setup?

    3) Should I try to flash the BIOS? This MB should have been compatible with Ryzen 7 CPUs so I was hoping not to.

    4) Would the computer try to post if for some reason the MB or CPU was damaged during install of the cooler? In what circumstances might it be totally dead like mine is now?

    5) I need to buy an MB speaker and see if I'm getting any error codes. Surprised that my MB didn't come with one. Sorry I can't report on this right now.

    6) If I need to strip this down and start again, how can I remove the CPU without first warming it up? I'm worried about the thermal paste sticking to the processor.

Fortunately it sounds like I can get a MB and CPU replacement but I want to try and troubleshoot before stripping everything down and starting over.

    Mechanical Keyboard Suggestions

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 11:31 AM PST

    Hey y'all,

My other post got my question answered relatively fast, so I thought I would ask this question as well.

I currently use a membrane keyboard, the Razer Cynosa Chroma, and needless to say, it's hot garbage. The key's are very wobbly on the board, they make a horrible rattling sound even when I just rest my hands on the keyboard. So, this holiday season, I've decided to finally make the switch to a mechanical keyboard. Just some things to note; yes, I have tried mechanical keyboards in the past, (Anne Pro II and the Razer Blackwidow Elite). Yes, I definitely prefer mechanical over any other type of keyboard. Also, I really enjoyed the switches on the Anne Pro II (not sure which ones they were; trying to find out right now). I prefer clicky switches, a nice audible sound when you press down on the key, and that little bump you feel when pressing the key down. My budget is under $150 if possible, but please let me know if that is just really unreasonable. Oh, and one last thing, RGB is a must (haha don't flame me please), and 60% keyboards are okay with me.

TL:DR - I use a membrane keyboard currently, I want to switch to a mechanical keyboard. Budget is ~$150, and RGB is preferred. 60% keyboards are okay, and I enjoy clicky switches that make a nice audible sound when pressed.

    Cheers,

    NVME noise when playing

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 01:11 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

I have just built a new computer, and have been having some weird experience with my NMVE drive (ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro).

When idling or doing typical stuff on the computer , everything is absolutely silent, apart, of course, from the fans.

When I start a game, after some time (I would say 3 to 5 min) something starts to make some noise. I have, at the moment, no guaranty it's the drive, but the noise is very similar to the noise hdd make when working. I've been observing some pattern : it starts with a longer duration, around 3 or 4 seconds, then stops, and then starts back again for a shorter time, but it's from that moment cyclical : noise for 1-2 seconds, silent for 3-4. The moment I alt-tab the game, it immediately stops. When getting back to the game, it takes some time for the whole pattern to start again (10-15 seconds). Even if I stand still in the game, even if the disk is not showing any activity when monitored (hwmonitor or such) the noise is here.

The drive is not that hot (around 40 degrees), and is completely silent when working (copy/paste, anti virus check ...)

I've done some research and some people tend to report some noise coming from their nvmes od various brands. I've found two videos with examples of that sound, but mine is slightly different. See for yourself :

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/lpg6pmlw0pw673y/20181224_125953.mp4?dl=0

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KS-BHI667po

What also troubles me is that it does not seem to be connected to drive activity.

I come to you and your potential experience. Have you guys had something similar ? Maybe another component is responsible for that ?

My build is a Ryzen 3800X on an ASUS TUG Gaming x570 along with a MSI 2070 super gaming trio.

    Thanks for your time

    Need advice for new case

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 11:19 AM PST

Hello! Im looking for advice on upgrading the case for my build. I was kinda stupid and cheaped out a little on the current case for my build. I bought an nzxt h500 because it looked great and was very affordable. After seeing some discussions of the case i found out that the airflow is a bit sketchy being negative pressure and all that. So far it's been fine and i havent had any heating issues - so far. Cable management have been somewhat of a nightmare and there is quite the rats nest hidden away in there as the cables from my psu are quite bulky. I also heard that overclocking is a bit of a no-no because of the heating. So im looking for a case that allows for great airflow, somewhat great cable management - and potentially enough space to comfortly install watercooling. Some neat rgb are welcome too as i have a red/blue theme going on with my hardware components.

My build if needed: MOBO: Asus prime z390-a CPU: i7-9700k CPU cooler: cooler master 212 GPU: 2080 super Memory: G.skill tridentz PSU: corsair rmx850

Im looking for something around 130$ (1000 danish crowns/kroner) for the case. Any advice on watercooling is very welcome too.

Thanks in advance! It's my first time owning/building a gaming pc - so the journey have been quite bumpy so far - but very worth it so far.

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming, music production, small scale server hosting, modding.

I've been using low to mid range stuff for quite some time, so now that I can I'd like to splurge a bit, get something high end with as few compromises as possible, do some overclocking.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    4k, 60fps, Ultra Settings.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $1,800.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    United States.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

My intention is to purchase everything excepting the GPU now, and then save up for a while and grab myself either a 2080 super or TI. Next year I might purchase a 4900x, if it's on AM4.

A friend of mine believes this ram kit would be superior, but I'm not convinced as the overall latency is basically the same, the timings are worse, and it's over the infinity fabric 2 to 1 threshold. The only benefit I can really see would be its smaller size, being able to fit in the normal D15 with both its fans. I should be able to fit a smaller fan onto front of the D15S so I'm not sure there's much of a loss there anyways.

As for the case, I decided to spring this one because it has deceptively good airflow despite its lack of a front intake. Also because it looks nice.

    [Build Ready] Audio Production PC

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 12:51 PM PST

    Build Ready

Building a PC for a friend who's upgrading from an old laptop he's been using to record on for years. He'll be mainly using it to track drums etc. In Cubase, mix etc. As well as some light video editing in Premiere. He also wants some RGB lighting (hence the rgb ram and fans) which I'm not too familiar with. Will this build work as is, or would I need a separate fan controller to control the fan colors? He won't be using it for any gaming so GPU is mainly going to be used for the video editing and is less of a priority over the audio performance.

His budget is right around $2000, USA.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

    control led strips with pc

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 07:29 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

as the title says, I am trying to connect the 5050 rgb led strips behind my desk with my motherboard, so I can control them with my pc. For this, I bought a 5050 cable, connected it to my motherboard and routed the cable through the back of my pc. Now sadly, in he manual of the motherboard (msi b450 gaming pro carbon) it says: "The JRGB1/ JRGB2 connector supports up to 2 meters continuous 5050 RGB LED strips (12V/G/R/B) with the maximum power rating of 3A (12V)."

Now I am wondering if this still would work for my 5m led strips, because the power supply that came with them only has only 12V and 2A output. Does anyone know the answer to that? If the answer is "no", Do you know a way of extending the range of led strip support?

    Thank you very much!

How common is overclocking now? And is it worth it?

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 06:56 AM PST

So the first computer I ever built was back in like 2009. Back when SLI and Crossfire were still a thing people did haha

Overclocking was fairly common then, but only for the CPU. Some small percentage of people overclocked things like Ram and GPU but I didn't see it happen a lot.

Now I am looking around and it seems like overclocking is apart of the normal build process? Almost every review I read has the user talking about the speed they were able to overclock to.

Every build I have ever done, I have used the stock cooler for the CPU. So in today's world, if I buy say a Rhyzen 7 3800x, am I seriously gimping myself by sticking with the stock cooler and not trying to overclock it?

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 10:51 AM PST

Hey guys, what do you think of my very first build? I intend on using it to edit 4k raw footage and play AAA games (what benchmarks can I expect with this build?) I made it with parts that are available where I live and wanted to know if I could get it somehow cheaper without losing performance. Also what case could you guys recommend?

    $1500 Build Help

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 10:44 AM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

I spent the last 12 hours throwing together what I think is a good build using current-gen parts. https://pcpartpicker.com/user/l0vemuffin/saved/MdGskL

I like to play fps games like battlefield, apex legends, modern warfare, and any game that comes out in the future. I also do occasional video, sound, and photo editing. During gaming, I would like a higher fps. Obviously, right now I have a 1080p resolution monitor, I expect very high fps rates, over 100 fps. If I get a 1440p monitor in the future, I want the PC to also support the resolution well while playing games at over 60 fps. I also want it to be future proof if possible, I don't want to have to upgrade it for a long while. There is an assumption that I will add more storage in the future. But I want the hard drive the OS is on to be really fast. And I was told that I can use Windows 10 media creation software or something to get free Windows 10's. Also, the monitor is pretty lackluster, but that's easily upgraded in the future. The Budget I'm going for is around $1500. There can be an extra couple dozen over or under, but the closer to the $1500 mark the better. I am in the U.S. I'm just wondering if the parts I chose make any sense. I'm looking for refinement at this point.

    What's The Best GPU for 1080p 60hz Gaming around a Ryzen 5 3600?

    Posted: 19 Dec 2019 06:39 AM PST

Title, was planning on buying a pc that would be somewhat future proof for mostly gaming and some programming and office work and wanted some advice about what is a GPU that would be a good pair with a 3600 and could run any game on 1080p high-ultra excluding heavy AAA titles such as ACO because I'm just not really into these kinds of games and even if I ever change my mind I think I don't mind even low settings.

I chose the 3600 because I saw a TON of recommendations on it for basically every category and it didn't exceed my budget.
