This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

What kind of monitor should I upgrade to?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 02:32 AM PST

I'm planning to upgrade my 24-inch 60hz monitor but I don't know where to start.

    Should I get a bigger one? maybe a 27-inch?

Or should I get one with 144hz?

    Or a curved monitor?

I usually watch youtube videos and Netflix on my pc

And I don't really play any fps games like overwatch or csgo. League of legends mostly.

    Thanks guys!

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 05:36 AM PST

Just built my first PC ever yesterday, and just wanted to say thanks to this community as I couldn't have done it without you all. This build overall took me a year to save up and the build I have next to me is very different from the list I planned in January, thanks to you guys. That said, there where a couple of struggles along the way, like trying to mount the CPU cooler correctly and removing the cable bar for the t h i c c graphics card.

    So, here she is!

How do I hide my gaming pc so it isnt visible?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 12:46 PM PST

So here's the deal, my uncle lives in my parents house and last year he found out my gaming PC was worth well over 3k and decided to sell it.

I complained to my parents about the guy invading my personnel space and selling my shit but the guy denied it tooth & nail. I've finally saved up enough for a second rig but I need to find a way to use it without It being visible that way he won't even be aware of it's existence unless he sees me using it.

Are there any tables or accessories that I can use to hide it? Or maybe there some mid-tower case that can camouflage with my wall or something?

I feel like im all over the place so I'll try to summarize this in one sentence:

Is there a way for me to use a PC while it's completely hidden from sight?

Edit: I appreciate the sleeper case idea but I don't think it'd work. I'd rather completely hide it if possible.

Found an old gaming rig in the trash, missing a graphics card. How can I get it running as cheap as I can?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 10:46 AM PST

I found a prebuilt PC ("iBuyPower") from like 2011-ish in the trash! I brought it home, started it up, and it's pretty dusty but works great.

I want to clean it up, maybe figure out what's up with the SSD or swap in an SSD from a dead laptop, stick a cheap used graphics card in it and get it working. I want to invest as little money as possible. I don't play many video games - I'd probably just run Portal 2 or Fortnite or some indie games, maybe Subnautica. I have a 1920x1080 monitor, I don't mind using lower settings, and while I'd like fairly smooth FPS, it's fine if it's not super-buttery-smooth. Functional is fine.

I live in the USA. Budget: I dunno, maybe $50. Here's the specs:

    • Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V LX
    • CPU: i7 2600K
    • Cooler: AIO liquid cooler, no branding or serial no. as far as I can tell
    • GPU: none.
    • RAM: 16 GB DDR3
    • Storage: 2tb and 500gb seagate HDDs. A 64gb SSD is present, but doesn't show up in windows explorer or Speccy, dunno what to do about that
    • LG Blu-Ray disc player
    • Power supply: Coonix 700W
    • Five case fans, full tower Cooler Master case

    I've seen a few suggestions for cheap, bang-for-the-buck GPUs -namely, the R7 265, R9 285, R9 270(X), and the HD 7870.

Two questions: * 1) are these reasonable GPU suggestions for my intended usage? * 2) given the presence of a generic cooler of unknown power consumption, and the fact that the power supply is a generic which could vary widely from spec, how can I judge the appropriate wattage available for my GPU? Can I just pick something on the lower side and assume if the power supply made it this far, I'll be fine?

    Ryzen 3700x vs 3950x

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 07:06 AM PST

Hi guys. Ignoring the monetary aspect, I'm trying to decide between these two processors. People everywhere say that the 3700x is more than adequate for gaming. I'm more interested in the 3950x though. If I were to go with the 3950x, would I see any less performance than if I went with the 3950x? I don't see why I would but I just want to conform that in single core games, and multicore games, I won't see any less performance if I opt for the 3950x than the 3700x.

If I’m only interested in 1080p, at 60fps, what CPU/GPU should I go for? Haven’t purchased a PC since 2005.

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 12:03 PM PST

My last pc was a custom build athlon 64 3800 with a GeForce 6800gt.

In those days, you could tell what was better because the number was higher. I think part of why I got out of PC gaming was because of the naming of the gear. It became too complicated for me and I was busy with life.

Lots of folks ask for PC builds with budget in mind, I want a PC with middling performance only.

It's kind of a weird request, but I have a huge monitor that's 60hz at 1080p and don't want to buy a new monitor.

So, what should I build if my goal was max gfx at 1080p and 60 FPS. I don't care about performance at above 1080, don't want to do VR and don't care for performance above 60fps.

    Edit:

The biggest mistake I made in my build was not waiting. There was no upgrade path for me since socket 939 was at the end it's life and the GPU was SLI capable but the card was outclassed with huge leaps in performance a short while later.

Windows 10 doesnt detect my new CPU, only sees 2/8 cores

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 12:22 PM PST

Howdy, I need some help fixing my old windows installation so I dont have to fully re-install.

Long story short, when I tried linux and a NEW win10 installation, they detected my i9-9900k without issue and showed 8 (+8 HT) cores. However, when I try to use my existing windows installation, the one I had since before my new hardware, it still thinks theres 2 cores (+2 HT). My previous processor was a quad core i5-3570k so maybe that is related?

Cinebench and CPU-Z verify this problem. https://imgur.com/e8uCD8u

Im almost certain its something with my windows installation, so is there any way to fix this so I don't have to just fully reinstall windows?

£1300 budget haven't had a pc since vista, help?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 08:33 AM PST

So the last time i built a pc was with my mum years ago, shes no longer with us and I'm less than savvy when it comes to hardware, I've been looking at cyberpowers custom build section but I don't know how much cheaper it'd be to do it myself or what bits to get, to get the most for my money.

Edit: Thankyou everyone for helping me decide to build my own and what best parts to get, which are all in a list ready to order, very excited!

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I'm sorry for the length, but this is the culmination of 9 months of troubleshooting and tons of combinations trying to fix the issue.

My monitor wouldn't go past 85Hz, although it's capable of 144Hz. I tried to change that on the Monitor adapter settings but the max choice is 85Hz. https://i.imgur.com/IRVnoD5.png

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

This issue started around 2 years ago where the monitor suddenly stopped going past 85Hz.

I spent around 9 months troubleshooting this issue. Here are the things I tried:

    My previous build had a Z170 Asus and a 6700K and a 980Ti.

    • I tried 3 DisplayPort 1.2 cables, all of premium quality and gold plated. All of them did a max 85Hz, including the cable that shipped with the monitor.

    • I tried DDU thinking it could be an Nvidia update that caused this, well, this DDU turned out to be a curse because after uninstalling the driver and restarting per the instruction, I stopped receiving signal to the monitor. Months of troubleshooting, changing the BIOS chip, changing the cables, using a different monitor, using a smart TV, using 4 HDMI cables of premium quality ... I was finally convinced I somehow bricked the motherboard with DDU which is nonsense but everything pointed to that direction.

    • I also installed the Nvidia UEFI firmware update https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/nv-uefi-update-x64/

PHASE 2 : Fast forward a few months, I bought a new motherboard (Aorus Master Z390) and a new 9900K CPU along with everything in the build above minus the GPU which is the only constant here along with the monitor.

I built the PC, pressed power on ... Nothing on screen. PC posted but no signal. At that point I almost ripped the GPU and hurled it across the room because it wasn't supposed to happen ! It's a new build and it should post.

Then one day at work I was getting ready to a presentation and we had issues with the projector flickering, and I heard my boss saying long HDMI cables can cause flickering and short ones are always better. After work I got a 1.5m HDMI cable and hooked my PC to my Samsung TV, and it worked ! I was then able to install Windows 10, then the GPU drivers and only then I was able to use the DisplayPort on the monitor (it has only one DP input).

But still, even with a completely new build (minus monitor and GPU) I still had the 85Hz issue.

I just received an Ivanky DP that is capable of 144Hz at 2K, but in vain. Still 85Hz

So the conclusion here is that it could either be the GPU or the monitor but I don't understand how they can go from one day doing 144Hz to doing only 85Hz even while trying a new build and 3 premium DP cables.

Is this a common issue in Asus or Nvidia GPUs to stop being able to output more than 85Hz? What can cause it?

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

    N/A

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I just received an Ivanky DP that is capable of 144Hz at 2K, but in vain. Still 85Hz

Looking for help making a PC for Flight Sim 2020.

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 11:55 AM PST

    Hi everybody,

My dad and I are trying to put together a no-frills budget gaming build for my Grandpa. He used to be an amateur pilot, but he's old as hell now and cant fly. He's really interested in playing Flight Simulator 2020, which I know doesn't even have a release date or official requirements listed yet but I want try and see what we're aiming for cost wise. It's also an excuse for me to plan a new build!

Here's where it gets a little more technical. My grandpa currently has a cheap pre-built Lenovo H530 desktop that we are going to try and salvage parts from. I'm pretty sure the only things we will be able to salvage are the case and the hard drive. But if there's anything here that might look reusable it would help us out a ton.

Here's what I have after doing some research. PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor $119.99 @ Amazon
    Motherboard Gigabyte B450 AORUS M Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard $74.98 @ Amazon
    Memory OLOy 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory $62.99 @ Newegg
Storage Inland 480 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive $45.99 @ Amazon
Video Card XFX Radeon RX 580 8 GB GTS XXX ED Video Card $159.99 @ Amazon
Power Supply EVGA 500 W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply $40.98 @ Newegg
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
    Total (before mail-in rebates) $514.92
    Mail-in rebates -$10.00
    Total $504.92
    Generated by PCPartPicker 2019-12-22 14:50 EST-0500

If you have any feedback or recommendations for lowering the cost and really getting as much bang for our buck as possible please tell me! I know this is a tall ask for a game that's getting released in the far off future, but I would appreciate anything you might have to contribute.

    Thanks a ton!

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    Flight Simulator 2020.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    High Settings, 45 - 60 FPS, 1080P.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

~$500, really just going for as cheap as possible.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    US of A.

GPU clocks fluctuating and temp limit constantly one 1 after trying to overclock cpu.

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 01:27 PM PST

GPU: RTX 2070 Super, 8GB of VRAM, no overclock

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700, (bought second hand and was pre-overclocked to 3.65hz)

Motherboard: Asus Prime B350-Plus, BIOS (Version 5216)

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3000MHz, XMP enabled, no overclock

    PSU: Corsair VS650, 650W

Description of Problem: I just overclocked my cpu from 3.65GHz to 3.9GHz and increased the voltage to 1.31V from 1.19V to get better performance and try to get 144fps in overwatch at Max settings. It was going quite decent I believe as the CPU temp was between 60 and 70 degrees C and the GPU was doing fine at it's expected boost clock of 1865Mhz and decent temp, I don't remember what temp but it wasn't worrying. I had better performance in game but when I checked afterburner the Power Limit was constantly on 1 when in game, if I switched out of game the boost clock went down to 1605Mhz as normal and the power limit dropped. I'm not entirely sure if the power limit was at 1 before I overclocked my CPU but I don't think that it was. I am not the most experienced at this so I thought this was a major problem and stopped the game then reset the CPU OC back to 3.65GHz. I restarted my computer for it to take effect but now when in Idle (watching a YouTube video but no games running) the core clock of my GPU keeps fluctuating. It should stay at 1605Mhz constantly but instead it moves between 1605 to 555 to 420 to 690 to 720 to 405 etc. every second. The memory clock also does this but it seems to be less frequent and only be 405 or 810 and sometimes 7000. The temperature is fine at 30 to 32 degrees Celsius and the fan speed is alright. The GPU usage is also fluctuating between 20% and 40%, I'm not sure if it did this before. When playing Overwatch the memory clock is at a constant 7000Mhz, the GPU usage is at 95% or 96%, the core clock switches between 1845Mhz and 1860Mhz which is alright however the main problem seems to be that the power limit is still at nearly a constant 1 (it is mainly at 1 but wvery few seconds it goes to 0 then 1 again near instantly) and the temperature seems higher than normal at around 70 degrees Celsius and constantly increasing to 71 then 72 etc. as it increased the rate at which it did decreased and it made it to 75 before I closed the game (which is higher than before the problem started).

My first PC, I'm done with laptop.

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 01:13 PM PST

Hi guyz ! I joined this sub some time ago just to find some tips how to build a decent PC. I found a lot of informations what to buy, what to avoid but im still not sure if i do it right. I'm from Poland so I'm gonna set a prices in Euros, close to DE prices

After over 10 years sitting on laptop and playing on Console i decided to build my first PC. I am going to use it for games but also to work ( graphic design, video editing etc)

I allready got 27" Acer Monitor which i used to PS4 and as 2nd screen to laptop, but yesterday i bought 24" 144hz Acer one on sale for ~ 124 Euro which i think its good price.

I never had Mechanic Keyboard so i bought one ( Motospeed CK98 ) for ~30 Euro. It might be shit but i am going to test it, maybe i will change it one day, i played on notebook keyboard for 10 years so for me keyboard is last part to buy.

But now its hardest part: PC Configuration

Thanks to my friend I'm able to buy nice Case - Gamini Cougar S for ~40 Euro so im gonna do it, case i nice and big, thats enought for me.

    2200G and 144hz freesync

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 10:58 AM PST

I purchased the 2200G I know that the integrated graphics will not hit 144fps in most games but I love how smooth the mouse cursor is at such a high refresh rate and I was wondering if I can output 144hz 1440p and if so does it need to be done via HDMI or DVI?

    Motherboard is ASROCK b450m-PRO4.

    Convert old laptop antenna wires?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 12:27 PM PST

    Hi all,

Kind of a weird question, but I have an old Asus ROG G75VW laptop and the wireless card kind of shit the bed. So I bought a new wireless card, which is m.2, and a converter for PCMCIA to m.2. It seems to physically fit and everything, and appears to be something that will work based on Amazon reviews, but the antenna wire connectors are too big for the m.2 card.

I think I got this card (can't find it in my Amazon right now): https://www.amazon.com/Intel-Wireless-Ac-9260-2230-Gigabit/dp/B079QH5KW1/

Does anyone know how to convert the antennas?

Edit: It appears I need IPEX 1 to IPEX 4 converter? I'm not quite sure.

Advice for upgrading parts in a five year old PC

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 11:48 AM PST

I have had an HP Envy Phoenix 810-330qe for about four or five years. I'm not a true gamer with a huge budget, so this PC has served me well (I replaced the stock GTX 745 with an MSI 570 4gb about two years ago), but the liquid cooling pump is on its last legs (whenever my PC is on, it makes a LOT of noise) and I want to upgrade what I have, especially the GPU, as I've mined with it whenever I left my PC on idle.

The liquid cooling pump is a problem, as the case is very small and some cooling fans don't fit nicely. On eBay, the exact same liquid cooling pump is being sold for +$80, which is surprising for a PC that's almost six years old, and I don't want to pay that much.

I have two HP Envy monitors that work as intended. I'm not sure what the exact model is, but they were purchased about three, four or so years ago. 60hz.

My budget is very minimal. I am looking to keep the cost under or around $300 as I already have a gaming laptop.

I already have an EVGA Platinum 1200w PSU (not installed due to size concerns and not having time). I also replaced the stock HDD with an 860 EVO 1TB, and the stock GPU with an MSI RX 570 4GB OC. However, I am not sure if it's a better idea to Crossfire with another 570 or get a different GPU.

I'm located in the United States.

It would be tremendously helpful if someone could suggest any parts that would fit inside my case. Thanks!

    Edit: CPU is an i7-4770k.

WTF! What is up with my ram

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 01:59 PM PST

lately, I have been experiencing many pc blue screens and game crashes and was looking through task manager and saw that my ram was only showing 8gb available and that my CPU and GPU where only about 30 to 50 percent in use so after my csgo match was done (which was very lagging and had every frame drop in the world) I restarted. after restarting I opened task manager and noticed that I know had 12gb of available ram but after playing some more the available ram decreased and the cached ram increased and even after closing everything the available ram stayed at what it was after I finished which was 10gb. Now whenever I'm doing anything the ram usage would never go above 51%.

First build parts arriving! Final critique/advice actually building it?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2019 08:50 AM PST

Everything should be arriving before Christmas, any thoughts? The only thing I'm debating is the CPU/cooler:

    • I might return the cooler as I'm not sure if it will fit in my case
    • I'm debating spending the extra $100 to upgrade to 3700x, as the amazon description on the 3600x lied to me and I didn't get the game bundle.

I plan on overclocking everything as much as I can. Lastly, is there anything else I should order for building this? Allen wrenches, screwdrivers, thermal paste, cables for PSU, etc?
