This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    m.2 screw size rant

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 08:07 AM PST

Why the hell is the m.2 screw a different size from every other screw in my PC? Why couldn't they just use the same screw size that fastens hard drives in place?

I recently had to replace the m.2 drive in one of my PCs and I dropped the screw inside the case. I was terrified that I'd lost it. Any other screw, no biggie because I have a dozen spares. But THAT screw? I have NO SPARES! And the thing is TEENY!

    Ok, rant over.

Edit: I did manage to recover the screw, and I wouldn't have left a loose screw inside the case. It's just that, if it had been an ordinary screw that I had a dozen spares of, or big enough that I could find it if it bounced into the carpet, I would have just turned the case upside down and shaken the hell out of it without regard for where the screw ended up. As it was, I had to gingerly rock the case this way and that until I could get the screw where I could grab it with a pair of needle nose pliers.

I know it's lame but can I please get some words of encouragement?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 05:51 PM PST

I wasn't expecting to feel this lost while building. All the cables are overwhelming, plugging up the PSU is confusing and I can't find a good guide for it, the manuals my parts came with have minimal words and are barely helpful, and I'm confused about the direction of my fans. I'll try to stop rambling now. I just want some encouragement because several hours into this I just feel so overwhelmed.

    These are my parts. It could be really neat if I can just figure out how to assemble it. ;-;

Don't be afraid to plug things in place. Like really.

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 12:39 PM PST

Okay, this has been said a million times already, but you know time goes by, new builders arise and they still worry about the same things, so here is a compilation from my experience since i did my second build (and my first "high-end" one, let's be honest) a few weeks ago:

Dont. Be. Afraid. To. Plug. Things. In.

I know alright, it's always scary af, you think you might have finally killed it, scratched the motherboard, broke the RAM, snapped your GPU's PCIe connector, but you know what ?

They are totally fine, you did nothing wrong.

    - Get that RAM in place okay, push it all the way in until it *clicks*, sometimes it might feel a bit weird, my second stick didn't click because i was too "cautious", but just give it a second push, hell, even unplug it then plug it back in just to be sure.

    - Your motherboard might wiggle a little, and that's totally fine, it's litterally designed to do that, if it was 100% rigid it would totally snap so constructors actually told themselves "what about we don't do that, that's stupid". It wiggles *a bit*, that's normal.

    - Same goes for the GPU, it's hella scary, i totally feel it, but same as your RAM, make sure to do her a favour and plug it all the way in ! It WILL feel weird, and that's normal, just gently push it in until it *clicks* in place.

    - Your CPU won't get hurt either, drop the fucker in place, give it a wiggle with your fingers just to make sure (don't push it, just wiggle a bit), as long as you followed the CPU's marks it will be in the correct alignment, you don't have to worry.

    - Yes, on Intel ones the "CPU lock/cage" is REALLY fucking hard to push all the way in, you won't break it, it's made to keep that thing in place therefore it's totally normal if there is a lot of force applied in both directions !

    - The IO shield on my z390-F motherboard was pre-applied and it was really, really fucking hard to put in my case. It wouldn't just "snap" in place, i actually had to forcefully put it in place, then rearrange the motherboard at the same time so the screw holes would *for the most part* face the stand-offs, then apply some screws to keep it perfectly in place before putting in the last screws. That worked out ! The IO shield is perfectly aligned now, my motherboard is secured, everything's fine, i just had to play with it a little at first (and trust me i was scared as fuck when i realised i had no choice than to do all that) but it's totally fine, it works flawlessly, nothing's damaged ! Don't be afraid to put it in place *gently* of course.

    - My 360mm AIO was a total pain in the ass. Screw holes for the fans were totally all over the place and that's probably the longest part of my entire build ! There is no miracle soltuon here, just try different configuration and order until you get neither something perfect or find out which one let's you put the most screw in ! I have 2 fans out of 3 hanging with *only* 3 screws instead of 4, but guess what ? It doesn't matter, like at all. 3 is largely enough to tighten them in place and it totally was worth the effort: 45°c on average on an all cores overclocked for an i9-9900k ! If that isn't proof to back it up, i don't know what is. Do your best, 3 screws out of 4 is enough.

    - Snap your PSU's connector in place, my first boot did show some huge perf loss on my GPU (I got an Aorus 2080 Super, so yeah, it was noticeable), until i figured out one of the two 8 pins wasn't plugged all the way in. This goes for all the other ones, CPU, fan, 24 pin, etc...

It won't hurt it. But a lose component might fuck up your boot. Just plug it in *gently* and make sure it's all the way in, don't be afraid !

Here goes, hope it will re-assure some of you :)

Finished my first PC build - a small(ish) 4K gaming machine for my living room. Found this subreddit very helpful, cheers.

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 06:21 AM PST

    Specs and pics here: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/cYMZxr

I built this PC for 4K 60fps gaming on my existing Samsung TV in the living room. I live in a small flat so don't have room for a setup with a separate monitor. So far it's working out great using a Corsair lapboard on my couch.

Also using it with Oculus Rift S - loving the improvement in controller tracking over my PSVR.

I was keen to make the PC as physically small as possible without making it too hard for my first build or sacrificing performance. Big respect to all the folks making true small form factor PCs, this fairly large mITX case was fiddly enough for me to work in.

I've briefly fiddled around with overclocking the CPU and GPU - currently running the 9700K at 5.1GHz on all cores. I'm still working on the graphics card but am currently running a 130MHz boost on the GPU and 700 on the memory.

I started off being very meticulous with my cable management, but became less and less so as time went on - hopefully it's not too bad! I may upgrade to some custom cables at some point as I am not keen on how the cables look on the front of the 2080 Ti.

I may also change the radiator and case fans to some 120mm Noctua chromax fans in order to reduce some noise. It's not crazy loud but I wouldn't mind it being a bit quieter when idling seeing as it is in the living room.

Overall I really enjoyed my first build.

    RX5700 8pin + 6pin from 1 cable?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 09:58 AM PST

    Hey!

Planning on upgrading to an RX5700 that requires an 8 pin and a 6 pin. My PSU is a 600W with 1 cable that has 2x 8 pin connectors. Googling this shows mixed results as to whether it's viable or not. Wondered if I could get a definite opinion on this.

    Thanks!

New build, was working fine. Plugged headset in and lost display and front power button no longer shuts off computer

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 11:14 AM PST

Put together my new rig last night and finished setting it up this morning. Tested a few games on it, everything seemed to work fine. At first the display port didn't work (HDMI worked fine), but after unplugging it and plugging it in a few times it worked. Today I went to plug my headset in and instantly lost my display (tried both HDMI and display port) as well as my front power button will not turn off the computer. Once the computer is off the button works fine to turn it back on. What am I missing?

    SSD- m.2 crucial 1tb

    HDD- Western Digital blue 1tb

GPU- Nvidia 1060 6gb (waiting on new one to show up)

    Case- NZXT 500i

Cpu fan is running at full speed, even for light internet browsing.

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 12:59 PM PST

This only started within the last hour, I've had my PC for 2 days now. the cpu and the case fan are running at full speed for no reason. The CPU fan is a 4 pin connected to the cpu fan slot on the motherboard, the system fan is a 3 pin connected to system fan 3 which is a 4 pin connection, this only started happening after I switched my computer on, it wasn't happening before. I was playing R6S on ultra settings and the fans weren't spinning this fast, I'm just watching netflix.

    What PSU should I get?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 05:11 AM PST

Ok so guys I have recently bought I5 2500k+Asus Z77+12GB Ram for about 120$ to pair it with my GT1030 (yea I know the build is bad but money is hard to get as a teenager in my country before I bought this pc I had a Q8300+8Gb Ram and GT1030) I have enough money for a new GPU and I was thinking of RX 580 8GB but I also need a new PSU because I have an 400W IBM psu which is surely not enough. So what PSU should I buy thats not extremely expensive but that is somewhat good.

Bang for the buck 1TB SSD

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 07:10 AM PST

OK so for an upcoming trip I'll need an external storage to dump all the footage from my new camera

While checking prices I couldn't justify paying for a portable SSD more than an internal or even some NVME for this single gig

So I realized the best move would be to get an internal storage with a cheap enclosure which enables portable usage via usb and I would still be able to utilize it later in my desktop PC as an internal storage

    Am I right?

Any recommendations comes to mind from recent deals?

I did go over some options but couldn't decide so I thought maybe you guys could help narrow it down

*I can't risk it with HDDs since they're less reliable than flash memory specially for traveling

*m.2 slot is already occupied so sata is the only way to pull this off I think

    Thanks

    Streaming and light editing pc

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 04:56 AM PST

I'm looking to build a computer that can handle streaming to Facebook/YouTube from one or two cameras (probably 4k for quality but streamed much lower), while outputting to a pair of projectors for slideshows and the occasional video (probably 720p or 1080p) and one/two monitors (probably 1080p), and also reasonably capable of light video editing of recorded footage for upload to Facebook/YouTube.

I'm not entirely sure what all of that actually requires as far as processing power is concerned, so here I am. I know raw video takes up gobs of storage, so the 2TB HDD will likely need bumped up. I also know video editing takes lots of RAM and the encoding/compressing/I-don't-know-the-proper-term, if necessary, will go faster with a better CPU but the 2700 might be overkill for everything else.

Unfortunately, I don't have any real experience with computers outside the realms of gaming rigs and email machines so I've been shooting in the dark to this point.

Below is the proposed build as it stands, budget is $1000-$1200 but preferably less.

So currently I have and 5 or more years old monitor and I think it's time to get a new one. My current one is 19 inch and has resolution of 1366x768 with 60hz without any kind of sync.

So the question is are these 2 monitors worth it and has noticable difference or can i get a better one? My budget is 115€ euro or 125$ USD dollars.

    First: https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-24-monitor-se2419hr/apd/210-atwt/monitors-monitor-accessories

Second: https://www.acer.com/ac/en/SI/content/model/UM.QV0EE.001 (it has same as previous 75hz)

Additional information: My pc has: Intel Pentium g4560, AMD RX560 4GB and 8GB RAM.

Games that i mostly play are: PUBG lite, Magic the Gathering, Dota 2 and League of Legends and sometimes some other games I cant wait for avengers game btw.

Other than gaming im using it for learning, watching videos / movies and IDK what else but 1/3 of the day (24h) I'm on pc so yeah.

Sorry for wasting your time and thanks for comment. I would like an 144hz but I can't find in my local store for my budget and I've never purchased from internet however I can ask someone to do it for me if there is one for my budget.

    Extra 4-pin cpu connector

Hi, I just bought an asus prime x570-p with a ryzen 3800x cpu. I got a corsair cx650 earlier this year and don't really want to buy a new psu just for the 4-pin extra connector. Do i really need to buy it? I know that the single 8-pin delivers up to 375w to the cpu, so it should be fine right? Thanks.

ive got my new build up and running just fine but whenever i play call of duty, the cpu load goes up to 100% sometimes and stays ion around the 85% range. is this okay for the cpu, if the temperature is still okay?

    Need Motherboard suggestions

This is my current build https://pcpartpicker.com/list/4hwqRk

I couldn't find my case online so I put a similar one but I believe the real one I have is a full ATX I'm pretty sure it's not the correct RAM either but I know my RAM currently is DDR4

My current motherboard is MSi B150 Pro-D and it's not compatible with my new i7 9700K so I obviously need to upgrade my motherboard

My price range is up to $250 for the motherboard, just need a good board with maybe some over locking features for the future but it's not completely necessary. I'm not going to push the PC too much as I just play games casually and do some 3D modeling from time to time and upgraded my CPU so my computer wouldn't try to kill itself whenever I played Monster Hunter World or No Man's Sky.

Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.
