This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    144Hz 1080p build.

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 03:20 AM PST

Hi all, I'm trying to build a cool and quiet PC that can play at 144~ fps @ 1080p ultra settings for 1100-1200$, here is what i came up with:

    CPU: Ryzen r5 3600

CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark rock 4

    RAM: Corsair vengeance 16GB(2x8) 3200Mhz

    GPU: PowerColor RX5700XT Red Devil

    Motherboard: Gigabyte b450 aorus elite

    SSD: HP S700 2.5" 500GB

    HDD: WD 1TB HDD

    Case: Phanteks eclipse p350x

Case fans: two be quiet! silent wings 3 120mm + preinstalled one phanteks 120mm case fan

PSU: Antec psu 650W high current gamer gold

I'd be glad if you can criticize the build and suggest better/more efficient parts for this pricepoint.

Installed Arctic Accelero Extreme IV on my MSI Armor 1080Ti. I’m worried I did it wrong. Help!

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 08:01 AM PST

    https://imgur.com/a/XUp2uZv/

There are some pictures of what I have.

Has anyone installed this thing on a 1080Ti and maybe even the armor?

The directions and few videos I've found call to put on these tightening brackets on the sides but the card is way too big to fit them.

I also can't figure out how to install the bracket that is supposed to keep it from sagging.

I also completely messed up the "protective film" that goes under the heat sink on the back so I went ahead without it. What does that do? Should I definitely put that on or will it be fine without it?

I'm worried this was a bad choice and might just go back to the stock Armor cooler at this point.

    Help!

P.S. I can provide more pictures if needed.

With black Friday coming soon, I've been eyeing some monitors and am wondering the feasibility of 1440p, high framerate gaming

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 07:20 AM PST

I'm definitely in the camp of "Higher fps = necessary for life," but recently my Rx 480 has only been able to pump out consistent 75 frames in a lot of modern games (without getting mega toasty). I've been itching to upgrade-- my build is only 3 years old but I just got my first real salaried job, and I want to buy myself a birthday/Christmas present.

So far what I'm looking at is a ryzen 3600 and Radeon 5700xt build, just bout 16gb of 3200 ddr4 RAM a few days ago on sale.

Is this a high enough specced build to even warrant getting a 27 inch 1440p IPS freesync monitor for several hundred dollars when that specific model is available? Will I even get good use out of it with my current specs? Or should I stick to using/getting an additional 1080p monitor and just upgrade to 27 inches (my current screen is 24).

Ascending from Mac, first PC build! 1080p 144Hz Gaming/Video Editing

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 05:08 AM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming, video editing/rendering, and general use/web browsing. I do not plan on overclocking much, only fiddling at most.

Games will be mostly non-competitive, RPGs and strategy games with some shooters thrown in (Ex. Outer Worlds, Tyranny, Dragon Age: Origins, Overwatch, Cyberpunk 2077, etc.)

Editing will be @1080/2k/occasionally 4k footage, primary software being Avid Media Composer and DaVinci Resolve, secondary software being Adobe Premiere.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1080p 144Hz, 60+ FPS at high/ultra. Been getting by with Wine and my GTX 680 but it's time for an upgrade

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

$1750 CAD/$1300 USD. Hoping sales in the coming weeks will bring costs down

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Canada

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I have a few component questions, despite my weeks of reading reviews and related threads. Mostly I don't want to overlook anything before I buy.

    CPU

My goal with the 3700X is to not require upgrading the CPU for quite a few years, extra cores ensuring video renders won't be an issue. If overclocking is avoided, will the stock Wraith Prism cooler be enough?

    PSU

While the 650 provides plenty of overhead, I want to ensure the model is reputable/I'm not skimping (as I've been warned not to do on power supplies). Is the RM650X a good investment?

    RAM

I've read there is little difference in performance between 3200 and 3600 RAM for games, will it make a significant impact for editing/rendering ProRes/H264 video?

    Case

Chose the Meshify C for aesthetic and good airflow. Are more fans than those provided recommended?

    Monitor

I've been bouncing between 1080p 144Hz TN monitors and have narrowed it down to the AOC G2590FX and the ViewSonic XG2402. Is the latter worth the extra cost attached to it?

Either will beat my old Samsung S22B300.

    Peripherals

I already own a solid pair of Sony MDR-V6 cans and recently grabbed a brand new G910 Orion Spark for $20, only need a new mouse

    Thank you for your replies!

I replaced my 750W PSU with a 550W PSU and power consumption sank 10% when idle

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 04:49 AM PST

I built my PC in 2013 (pcpartpicker post) and am still happy with it. Since then I doubled the RAM to 32GB, added a bigger SSD and made the HDDs switchable.

I sometimes had issues with turning it on or waking it up from sleep. Because of a work around (flicking the PSU on and off with the right timing) I never looked into it. Until last week when the issue got worse. The work around only worked ever tenth time. I finally removed the PSU and it even fails the jump start test. So I ordered a new one.

    Replacing Seasonic with Seasonic

The old PSU was a Seasonic G-750. The new one is a Seasonic Foxus GX-550.

When I built the PC, I thought about adding a more powerful GPU some day and getting a power supply that will last for more than one build. But it turned out that I never had the need for a more powerful GPU. 750W were ridiculously over powered for my build.

I got a cheap, but reliable watt meter (Brennstuhl PM 231 E) and measured the power consumption of my build. Under stress testing (prime95 + Unigine Heaven) it barley reaches 350W. CPU and GPU already overclocked. Fun fact: That's just below the 382W estimate by pcpartpicker. I still wanted to have some headroom, because I want to keep the PSU when I upgrade. Therefore I went with 550W.

    Testing idle consumption

I waited for the system to downclock to 800MHz got get similar readings. This is obviously not a very controlled setup, but the numbers didn't fluctuate much.

I first tested the old 750W PSU. 61W when idle.

Then the new 550W PSU. 55W when idle.

Both PSUs are rated 80 Plus Gold. Why is there a 10%? Because the 80 Plus Gold rating requires 90% efficiency at 20% load. 20% of 750W is 150W. 20% of 550W is 110W. When you look at tests (Focus Plus Gold 550W, same platform older model), you will see that the efficiency has the biggest gains between 10% and 20%. Slowly improves till 50% and goes down again at higher usage.

While both PSUs show a similar efficiency at higher loads, the less power the system needs, the bigger the difference.

While browsing, my PC uses around 100W, where the 550W PSU is close to it's optimal efficiency, but the difference to the 750W PSU is probably already smaller.

    Get an appropriate PSU

While the difference is small, it's measurable and has an impact over the years. If I knew that my PC would only use 100-150W most of the time, I would have bought a more appropriate PSU when I built it. Would have saved me some 20€ for the PSU and another 20€ in electricity costs.

Would love to know if someone else made similar observations. Maybe this helps some people when they decide what PSU to get.

    SLI or Single Card?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 12:00 PM PST

I've been running two GeForce GTX 980 Ti cards SLI'd since early 2016, and since then it's been no issue, but recently I've been having to lower a lot of video settings on recently released games just to maintain a stable 60fps on 2560x1440.

Fallen Order was the first game I've ever had to bump down to 1080p just to have stable frames. I've read that a lot of games that release nowadays don't really benefit from SLI and that a single card would be more beneficial all around.

I'm considering selling my two cards and replacing them with a GTX 2080. I would really like to hear what you guys think and if you have any feedback.

edit: Forgot to mention that my budget for a new card is around $500-750, so a 2080 Ti is a no go.

    RAM Frequency Help

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 01:07 PM PST

    Hello everyone,

I am a noob so, all I am looking to do is just boost the speeds of my RAM. Since it is defaulted to 2133, I know that it is currently being wasted. As of right now I boosted the frequency of the RAM to 2800. I have not adjusted ANY other settings. What I would like to know is if this is okay? I am not looking to OC my entire PC, I don't even want to OC my CPU right now, I just want to boost the frequency of my RAM without harming any other components. I currently have the Asus AI Overclock Tuner set to AUTO, is this also okay?

    Any advice would be great

Building a Ryzen 3950X system for development and gaming

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 01:04 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

The primary usage for this machine will be software development where I have to do long running parallel builds, the more cores the better. Also some gaming and general desktop use. I want something that has high fidelity audio. I don't intend to go crazy with RGB but I'd like something that looks good and a case with easy cable management.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1440p gaming at 60hz. Not the primary use of this computer, but I will be gaming on it.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

About $2000 or so. I'm using my old EVGA GTX 1080 GPU. I may upgrade it to Nvidia 3xxx series GPU whenever it comes out, but I don't think I'll ever do SLI. I have another 2TB M.2 SSD, a couple SATA hard drives, and a SATA SSD I'll be migrating from my old machine.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Questions that come to mind: is this the best memory/motherboard combination for this CPU? I'd like to attempt some mild overclocking, but system stability is paramount. Need to have the RAM low-profile so it will fit under the DH-15 cooler with two fans. I also looked at the NH-U12A I just wish it was available in black.

Are there any notable reliability problems with the parts I've picked?

When doing software development I'll be dual-booting into Ubuntu 19.10 Linux. Any major compatibility issues there?

Should I buy more fans or are the 4 the case comes with + the two on the cooler more than enough?

    First PC Build Advice

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 11:20 AM PST

As the title says, I have never built a pc before so I wanted to check to make sure there weren't any issues I missed in designing this build. I plan to use it for 1440p 60fps+ (depending on the game and settings I think I can get 120+ though), and I believe all parts should work together/fit in the case. From what I've read my CPU should be good enough for my build since GPU will be more important for performance. For monitor I just chose what seemed like a good fit for my build, but I am not sure if I'm overdoing it. The build seems like it should keep from overheating, but I'm not so sure if I plan to overclock (which I think is mostly dependent on motherboard) in the future. Also I've read tomahawk boards can be problematic but I'm not sure if a better option exists, especially since the max is ryzen 3000 compatible out of the box. I feel like SSD and HDD are a good mix for separating OS and general application storage, and while I plan to get Windows 10 I also want to dual boot Linux, but I read AMD CPUs don't always mix well with Linux systems. Is that true or is it just not as well optimized but usable? I know I'm asking about a lot, but even just an answer for a single question would be great! My budget (not including monitor and OS) is $1300.

Screen resolution is down to 1680x1050 from 1920x1080 after installing new GPU.

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 06:14 AM PST

As my title says my resolution went to 1680x1050 and the screen is blurry after installing an AMD RX 5700 XT replacing my nVidia 1060 6gb gpu.

I have used DDU to uninstall my drivers and placed the new gpu in. Before installing the AMD drivers the resolution is 1920x1080 so was with my old gpu. However the moment i install the AMD driver the resolution drops and the screen gets blurry.

AMD Driver version is the latest available from their website.

Any idea what would be causing this?

Some advice needed on a PC upgrade.

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 08:06 AM PST

New year, new pc. Well, not yet the new year, and is just an upgrade.
Currently my pc is doing pretty well, but i want to upgrade it for Cyberpunk 2077, i want it to run smooth and at max fps.

    My actual build is this:
    - CPU i5 6500k;
    -16 GB of DDR4 Ram;
    -GPU Asus GeForce GTX1060 Turbo;
    -1 SSD (125 gb, used only for Windows and programs) and 1TB HDD);
    -Motherboard Z160 ProGaming;
    -A Corsair power supply, 750W.

Now, i was planning on changing the Motherboard with a Z390, change the CPU with an i7-9700k, add another 2 sticks of ram (total 32GB, same 3000Mhz class) and get another HDD and add it to the other (i think is called a "raid").

It's a viable build ? Do i need to change also the GPU ? Is the RAM going to bottleneck me because of the low frequency ? My PSU is going to go full kamikrazy and kill me in a house fire ?

I'm going to get my parts from Amazon, so if the link is needed i can add them.

Hey there. So I am building a new rig and I originally wanted a "Future proof" gaming rig with a 2080ti that will last me the next 5-7 years, so I basically chose everything top of the line. But now, I fucked up and started down the dark tunnel of reading on the next gen of GPU, and turns out, Ampere 3080 ti will be the real deal, and now I don't know how to approach the situation. The thing is, the main games I play now are "slightly less AAA", like Apex Legends, WoW, Rocket League, in that arena of games, rather than AAA games like COD MW that I probably won't be into. I want to play at 3440x1440 ultrawide at 144hz. So I can't decide now if I should get the 2080ti now and play games maxed out for the next 8 or so months until the 3080ti comes out, then try and sell it, or if a 2070 Super will do the job until then? I'm getting mixed reports on whether the 2070 Super can handle 3440x1440 @ 144hz for games like Apex on ultra settings. I know WoW should be fine. I did the math and have two options:

1, Buy 2070 Super for $500 now, then sell later for ~$300 then buy 3080 ti (~$1000 when it comes out) = $1,200 total investment

    OR

2, Buy 2080 Ti Black for $1049 now, then try and sell for ....~$600(?) later, then buy the 3080 ti (~$1000 when it comes out) = ~$1,500 total investment

I guess it comes down to how well the 2070 Super would fare for my use case.

Now I know a lot of people say, don't think about the future, just buy now.... but this next gen seems like a big deal, esp at this time of the RTX's life and I'm really trying to future proof, so any advice would be appreciated.

    Upgrade Time: GPU (1440p 144Hz)

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 12:09 PM PST

So I think it is time to upgrade my 980 Ti. I was thinking of getting a 2080/ 2080Super. I am however concerned about my i7-4790K being a bottleneck (Not OC'ed). I usually play AAA titles and Siege and Apex for multiplayer games.

Am I going to struggle to hit 144Hz because of my CPU?
