This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX CPU ERROR

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 01:24 AM PST

    Hi guys,

I just finished my first build and I tried starting my PC but the motherboard gave me a red CPU warning.

After 5seconds, the warning light switches from CPU to VGA. Subsequently, the warning light stays on the VGA warning. The CPU fan is still working though...

Troubleshooting: I have tried the following: 1. Readjusting the CPU, 2. Reconnecting the power cable for the CPU (I notice that one of the 2x4 cable shape doesn't really compliment the shape on the cpu power socket perfectly but the pins can still be attached snuggly.) 3. RUN THE set up without graphics card.

No matter what j tried, it always goes in the loop from CPU flashing light the moment i turn it on, to VGA warning lights

Also, there is a slight buzzing sound which I presume to come from the cpu...

Hope to resolve this soon as I would like to give it as a present for Thanksgiving.

The components are 1. Rosewell 650 80+ gold PSU 2. MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX 3. RYZEN 3600X CPU 4. CPU FAN comes with the CPU

Well, I learned a few things this time. Not as easy as my first build but it wouldn't have been as fun if it was easy, right?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 08:16 AM PST

So I let money get the best of me and that's where things went wrong. Nothing drastic but making hasty decisions up front costed me a bit more in the long run. From the start of this build, I had an NZXT H210 case picked out on PCPP. Good looking case, ITX form factor, good cable management, it had what I wanted. I missed the last sales on the h200's when they were clearing stock and I had already purchased all of my other parts so I was getting anxious and impatient. When browsing newegg for cases, I came across the Metallic Gear Neo-G mini case. Cheaper off the start and it also had a MIR. It looks great and it had a vertical GPU riser. It looked awesome and I completely didn't think about the space implications a vertical GPU will have in an ITX build.

I got my parts and finally the case came in. I had gotten a bit impatient earlier in the week so my mobo, cooler, ssd were already attached and ready to go. I got excited so I wanted to screw in my mobo and psu, slot in my gpu and get going. Here's where things went wrong. With the cooler vertical, the gpu would not fit because of how wide the Noctua heatsink is. Easy, just rotate 90 degrees. I moved the brackets and and tried to put the cooler in. Now the heat pipes hit the ram stick closest to the CPU. It was all just dumb planning on my part. If I had gone for the NZXT case, all would be fine and I wouldn't have had to deal with this stuff. At this point, I was committed to the case because of all the stress it was causing so after some gentle insults from the SFFPC community, I found out that this case is really only suitable for AIO cooling. Liquid cooling was something I was never really sure about but if I was going to make this PC work, it's what I had to do. So I ordered a new AIO, took apart the whole computer again to get the cooler seated and now it runs like a dream, I have all 16gb of ram and I still have the pretty view of my vertical GPU. Plus, My CPU is running about 20 degrees cooler because the airflow in this case is less than impressive. In total, I think I seated the notcuta cooler 3 different times, took the mobo out 3 times, wasted a lot of thermal paste and a few hours of my sanity.

For small builds, measure, measure, measure and then measure again. My first ITX build was easy and I thought that trend would continue. Oh well, you live and you learn. IT was still worth it and it runs like a dream!

Consensus for best AIO RGB water cooler?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 01:19 PM PST

With black friday approaching, the final piece of my build will be upgrading my 3600's stock cooler to an RGB water cooler. However, I'm having a hard time deciding which one to get since it seems there are so many options. I'm primarily concerned about noise and performance, but also want it to look nice.

    Here are some candidates:

    1. Corsair H100i Platinum

    2. CoolerMaster MasterLiquid ML360R

    3. Thermaltake Water 3.0

I know there are many other options besides these as well. Right now I'm leaning towards the Corsair because I'm already using their fans in my case, but I also heard it's not the quietest option.

Does anyone have any recommendations for which one to get?

    Economic PC question by noob

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 07:40 AM PST

Is this worth $500USD? I'm trying to get an economic PC for work purposes plus to play older games - 3+ year-old games. So I don't need anything crazy. This PC has Microsoft Office installed which is key for my work and here are the specs:

    Power supply: Seasonic G550 80+Gold

Motherboard : ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0 gaming crossfire ready.

    Processor : AMD FX-8320 ,8 core 3.7 Ghz

Memory: 16 GB triple channel DDR3

Graphics : Nvidia GTX 760, 3GB GDDR5, 4 monitor support and dual PCI-E SLI ready.

SSD: 256 GB ADATA very fast booting for Windows and running programs.

HDD: 1 TB Western Digital HDD for storage

    Microsoft Office full version installed

I think the motherboard and graphics card aren't amazing by any stretch, but I think it will do the job to play older games, no? Is this worth $500USD if I don't care at all about playing the newest games on the market?

Building my first PC, need advice/feedback!

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 08:48 AM PST

[EDIT: Forgot to add my GPU, whoops!] [EDIT2: Budget would be around $3000, flexible to going slightly higher or definitely going lower if other similar spec parts are found!]

    Hey all!

I am finally building my first PC after gaming on a laptop and console for so long (PC Master Race Whoo!). However, I have very little knowledge on what to look out for when building a PC (compatible parts wise/using the most out of said parts), I have basic knowledge on terms and specs for parts, so I have an idea on what I am looking for, but at the same time I'm attempting to go high end for future proof as I am planning on moving towards coding, game development, and deep into computer science.

In general, I am mostly going to use my PC for gaming, I'll be playing games such as Overwatch, Modded Minecraft, playing future VR games (unsure which ones as of now, but possible VR Chat). Additionally, I will be doing other hobbies on it such as digital art, animation, video editing, even possibly streaming my games. In terms of the future, I'll be planning on creating my own games, and possibly coding apps and websites.

Below are the parts I currently have listed for my PC, I am waiting for sales during Black Friday and Cyber Monday when the prices hopefully drop a reasonable amount, nothing has been bought aside from the case for my PC.

I will be installing Windows 10 Pro on my PC as well, any tips and feedback would be greatly appreciated! :)

HELP! Bought a new gpu and it's under performing

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 02:00 AM PST

I bought a new RTX 2060 and it's underperforming. I made sure I installed the latest nvidia drivers, msi dragon center, and msi afterburner. My previous GPU was 1050ti and the performance was the same thing as the 1050ti. I'm getting nowhere near the benchmarks that I see online.

    Specs:

    ryzen r5 1400

    corsair 8x2 3000mhz ram

    gigabyte ab350 gaming 3

Adopted Sister Damaged my PC need guides on how to clean this mess.

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 01:36 PM PST

So, This is quite the annoying situation I am in. I run a small set up in a A1 plus i got for christmas last year. This year I moved to illinois to live with my father and try to find work etc because where I was living it was hard to even pay bills. My father has adopted a girl as part of the family because of various reasons and shes in her 20s (no job etc) and to spite me for moving in and ruining her little world, While I was out and about she dumped about half a box of cat litter into my pc while it was on..Now im cleaning this thing and taking it apart because its not booting now. What parts should I be aiming to clean, take apart, or replace?

Any tips for transporting my mid-tower pc?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 09:57 AM PST

So I have a bit of a dilemma. I need to move. And I want to take my pc with me. Preferably, I would like to be able to move it a few times a month between different places. I'm fine with buying a separate monitor, possibly peripherals, and having two setups at two different locations. The only thing I can't afford right now is another pc. And I'm not keen on selling this one and getting a laptop, even though that would be nice.

Basically I have the styrofoam and original box of my case for the pc. Originally I was thinking to transport my pc in there and make sure it was always kept at a steady position, but I want to be as prepared as possible to move it. The only thing I need to worry about is the pc, I can deal with everything else. If anyone has any experience or insight on this topic, then I would be really grateful to hear it.

And I'm sorry if this isn't the right place. I figured this would give me the most success out of most subreddits. But if it really doesn't fit then let me know. Thanks!

Edit: I have no idea how to format these types of posts on reddit to make charts. Sincerest apologies for the formatting. I tried.

Specifically, Im wondering if there are any other suggestions for different manufacturers for the RAM and GPU. I feel confident enough with the cpu, mobo, and psu choice though I am still open to suggestions or criticisms. Case, storage, and peripherals not listed because I already have those. I intend to buy these parts in the next 4-5 days.

    Btw, Im using a 27' 1440p, 144hz monitor.

pc cold for two weeks, attempted lots of troubleshooting to no avail, please help

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 08:00 AM PST

This is technically a repost, but with the original post being almost two weeks old, i thought it would be ok. Apologies if not.

    Original post:

    Parts list:

    Asus B450m-k motherboard

Ryzen 5 2600 cpu at stock speed

    HyperX Fury 2400mhz, cl15(?) ram, 2x4gb

    rx570 4gb gpu

    Seagate barracuda 1tb hard-drive

I heard that ryzen benefits a lot from faster ram speeds, so i attempted to increase my ram frequency in the motherboard bios. I had had the ram at 2666mhz for some time without issues, but had put it back to stock 2400. So i thought I'd set it at the option after 2666, it was 27 something. After i did this and exited the bios, the pc went into a black screen.

After this i made sure the ram, gpu and all the cables into the motherboard hadn't come loose. Tried again, same thing. The cpu fan was spinning, though. I proceeded to ask for help from the discord server of this sub, i was told to reset the cmos battery. I did that, the computer booted into black screen just as usual, but this time there were three beeps coming from the motherboard.

In the past, i had had an issue with blackscreen and three beeps, and i resolved it by making sure that my ram was slotted in well. I did it again, and this time, when i pressed the power button, nothing happened. The cpu fan didn't spin, my hdd wasn't making hdd noises, nothing.

So the patient and helpful people in the discord server instructed me to reseat the cpu. I did that, took the ram out and put it back in, made sure all of the cables going into the motherboard were connected well. This didn't help either.

My motherboard has some lights that turn on when power is plugged in, and those light up, when i flip the psu power switch, so i don't think the problem is a dead motherboard or psu. I could obviously be wrong, though, since this is my first pc, built a few months ago. Could it be that i fucked my ram by attempting to change the frequency?

Please answer, at this point i am completely clueless as to what i need to do to fix my pc, and honestly the whole thing is just wearing on me a bit. I just wanted to play a bit after a long week. Thank you in advance.

edit: made sure front panel connectors are on properly, removed all other devices attached to psu except mobo, cpu and gpu, tried one ram stick at a time, nothing helped

edit2: confirmed that all of the cables from the psu to the mobo are connected properly, still dead. going to sleep now and will try reseating the cpu and testing a different psu/a different mobo for the psu tomorrow. do power supplies fail out of the blue often?

I used the power supply to boot up a different motherboard, and it worked well. Did not test if i got video from that one, though. After this i figured that the problem is in either the motherboard or the ram, so today i went to the store to buy a new motherboard with the intention of returning my old motherboard (asus b450m-k) if getting a new mobo would solve the problem.

I installed the new motherboard, which is an msi b450-a pro the problem persisted. This motherboard has no lights to signal power, but a light on my gpu came on signalling that it was receiving power. I pressed the power button, and absolutely nothing happened.

I will be getting some new ram tomorrow, and will update this post accordingly. Looking forward to any replies. Thank you in advance.

What's more important, HDR or a good contrast ratio?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 05:38 AM PST

I'm in the market for a new monitor and was wondering what's more important to look for: HDR or a good contrast ratio?

I've seen most monitors (Asus VG27AQ and LG 27GL850 to name a few) that support HDR10 but are only rocking 1000:1 contrast ratio. Then on the flip side there are monitors with 50000:1 contrast ratios but no HDR. Is 1000:1 good enough? Does the downgrade in contrast ratio justify the HDR support? Which ones would perform better in a strictly gaming environment for colour production?

I haven't purchased a monitor since 2011 so I'm trying to catch up with all the latest stuff. All help is appreciated.

    Ryzen 7 3700x + RTX 2080 SUPER

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 11:00 AM PST

    Hi guys,

I have recently stumbled across a deal for a Ryzen 7 3700x + RTX 2080 SUPER build. Which is originally $2100 (AUD) down to $1800 (AUD)... It costs $1700 (AUD) for just the [Ryzen 7 3700x + RTX 2080 SUPER].

I initially wanted to go for a 3700x + 5700XT build but this seems like a decent deal, however, I'm not sure how good these parts are as a system. The company offers a few upgrades. I would prefer a X570 motherboard, a different case and a non stock CPU cooler which I could upgrade to and sell the old parts; but that wont be for quite a while as I have no peripherals.

    The build:

Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X Processor
    Case: Thermaltake Versa H18
    Motherboard: AMD B350M Motherboard
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER 8GB Graphics Card
    Memory: 16GB DDR4 [2400MHz] (2 x 8GB)
Power Supply: 750W 80+ Bronze Power Supply
Solid State Drive: 240GB m.2 NVME SSD
    Networking: On-Board Network Port
    Processor Cooling: Stock CPU Fan
No Hard Disk Drive & No Operating System Activation

    Immediately I will be upgrading:

    Memory: 16GB DDR4 [3200MHz] (2 x 8GB) --- ($69 AUD)
HDD: 1TB Seagate --- (already owned)

Is there anything else I should look out for?
Or plan on upgrading in the near future?
Is this deal better than me building my own PC?

    Need help in deciding between few monitors - 24" 144Hz gaming monitors < 150$ - 200$

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 04:21 AM PST

Hey, I want to buy a new gaming monitor, probably during BF/CM and have picked few options that sound good to me but I'm not entirely sure which is best - ghosting, dead pixel warranty, image quality etc.

I'm looking for something with 144Hz refresh rate, good response time (I'm not fixated on the 1 ms response time) with good image quality (so no TN panels). I prefer no curve but since its only 24" I guess its not an issue. I'd prefer without a speaker since I think its a pretty useless feature for a monitor.

I did some looking on Amazon and BAPCS and picked the following monitors and would love your help in picking which is best or if you have any other suggestions on which monitors to monitor on BF/CM (pun intended):

NOTE: I live in Israel hence the expensive shipping and import fees (and some monitors aren't sent to Israel like Pixio)If it helps, here is a website of a retailer https://ksp.co.il/?select=1024..230.&ami=893 (Small US flag under cart symbol on the left for English (sorry UK))

Please help with my pc build - Case, cooling and power

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 01:41 PM PST

I know the bits and bobs I want but I'm confused by cooling, case and power supply. Can anyone suggest how I should do it? I picked a few bits but I'm not sure. I'm not a fan of the idea of liquid cooling either as water near all those parts scares me. Any advice is welcome. I know it's excessively powerful though, please don't get on that rant. New 3700x Ryzen hitting 1.450 CPU voltage without being overclocked - How can I lower it?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 01:28 PM PST

In a follow up from my last post. My new PC had been crashing and giving me blue screen. I reinstalled windows and did a benchmark on my GPU and it came out fine. My CPU core voltage is still high and I think that could be the reason for all my issues. I never overclocked it because I don't even know how to do that.

I ask if anybody knows how I can lower my core CPU voltage through ASUS BIOS please tell me how because I am lost trying to set it to a safe voltage.

Messing around with BIOS is pretty intimidating to me since I think any wrong adjustment could mess up my PC internally.

Here are screenshots to reference too and I took while in BIOS

    Thanks

    Which 2080/2080Ti to Go For?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 01:17 PM PST

    So my Current specs are:

    • CPU: i7 9700k
    • MoBo: ASUS ROG Strix Z390-E
    • Memory: 2x 8GB DDR4 (Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB)
    • GPU: EVGA Geforce GTX 1070
    • PSU: Corsair RM750i 80 PLUS Gold
    • Storage:
      • WD - 500GB M.2 NVMe Black
      • Samsung 860 EVO 1TB SSD

This is my first build and I was able to get the 1070 for next to nothing from a friend so I was able to spend more on the other specs. After saving up some money though, it's time to get a graphics card more in line with the rest of the build.

I'm just looking for some advice on what would be best for this build and how to not get ripped off. The only demanding task I use this build for is gaming, is a 2080Ti overkill for that? I will be running AAA games on the highest settings in 1440p.

Also I love RGB unfortunately. I was looking at something like the EVGA 2080Ti FTW3 Ultra, but it looks like everyone agrees that it is a ridiculously overpriced card (but I love the look of it). Would it be stupid to buy that card?

Anyway, I'm still new to PC building and for the first time in my life have money to spend on building a great system so I'm willing to go overboard. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Spec sheet says i5-9600k supports DDR4-2666 memory. Can 3600mhz chips be used and will it help or hurt performance?
