Robert Hallock confirms 16 core Ryzen 7000 CPU uses 170W TDP/230W PPT Posted: 27 May 2022 07:14 AM PDT There has been a lot of discussion on power usage of AM5 and Zen 4. There was originally misinformation from AMD, then it was clarified that these higher numbers were accurate for the AM5 socket, but now we also have confirmation that the 170W TDP/230W PPT power figures aren't just the AM5 socket limits but that they will be used for the 16 core Ryzen 7000 CPU (7950x?). https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/uy7ep8/amd_corrects_socket_am5_for_ryzen_7000_power/ia3nqwe/ https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/uy7ep8/amd_corrects_socket_am5_for_ryzen_7000_power/ia3ohke/ This is surprising as many of us thought that these higher AM5 power limits were increased for flexibility in future chips, like a 24 core Zen 5 chip, but it turns out AMD is using the full increased socket power out of the gate, which makes the 15% single thread and 31% faster multithreaded figures an even bigger headscratcher, AMD's efficiency seems to have gone down as power limits increase and shown off performance is underwhelming.
