This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 11:23 AM PDT

    So,

i was thinking of getting a 128gb ssd for an os

then a 1/2tb hdd for games

is that a good budget choice or... would i need a 256gb ssd for the boot drive?

(edit: thanks everyone for the help, and i think ive got quite good answers so you don't need to answer anymore :) you can discuss in the comments tho, i dont mind)

First PC Build in Decades - What do you think

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 07:21 AM PDT

The PC will be used mostly for gaming with a LG CX OLED TV as a monitor. Tell me what you guys and gals think. I haven't built a PC since I was a teenager but got the bug for some reason recently. If you can think of any parts that can be swapped for cheaper, but equally/better performing please let me know. I know some of it may be a bit overkill but I'm hoping this will last me a good long while without upgrading. Thank you!

    Upgrade My Gaming PC!

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 09:30 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

With the launch of New World Beta I have realized my computer is not up to par. Struggling to play on low settings with lots of FPS stuttering. I know my computer build is getting pretty old now. However, due to the current price of graphics cards and their unavailability, I was hoping I could make a couple of small upgrades and get a few more months (for New Worlds release and for graphic card prices to fall) before building a new rig. If judged to be a waste of time, I can spend about $4k on a new PC if required.

    Location: Canada

    CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4690K CPU @ 3.50GHz 3.50 GHz

    RAM: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970

    MB: MSI Z97 Gaming 5 (MS-7917)

    RAM: 8gb dual-channel ddr3 @ 799mhz

SSD: 500GB Samsung SSD 850 EVO

Thanks for your help, hope there is a solution out there.

Update: OC'd up to 4.8ghz on my processor, and ordered 8gbx2 ddr3 ram for now. Will look at building the new PC in a few months. Thanks everyone.

    Gaming PC for 10 y/o

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 11:26 AM PDT

Hey guys, my daughter loves PC gaming specifically Roblox and is picking up some interests in other PC games.

She is working hard to save money to buy a tower and I really have no idea wth I'm looking at.

Here is what she is Interested in buying:

    iBUYPOWER - Arc Gaming Desktop - Intel i3-10105F - 8GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce GT 710 1GB - 480GB SSD

Is this any good? Can anyone recommend something? She is trying to stay under $600-700 for the tower. Is this a reasonable range for a pretty good one?

We are worrying about all the other stuff like keyboards, monitors, chair later.

Thanks in advance. Help a mom out!

EDIT: thank you everyone for all the replies! I really appreciate it so much.

PC back panel dimensions and specifications, help?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 09:37 AM PDT

    Hi All,

Sorry, I hope this is the right place for this kind of post. I am currently designing my own PC case, which is basically your standard ATX PC case but made all out of acrylic, but am having trouble finding exact dimensions for the back panel, specifically the dimensions of the PCI slots in the panel, and their location relative to the motherboard, although I may just be being an idiot and may be able to figure it out from the specs I have.

I am aware of two publicly availible specs that help with this, the main ATX spec http://www.motherboards.org/files/techspecs/atx2_2.pdf, and the PCIe electromechanical specification https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~djm202/pdf/specifications/pcie/PCI_Express_CEM_r2.0.pdf. However both these specs are quite old now, should I be concerned about this, or are these specs still relevant to modern computers? Also, I could just get a lot of the dimensions I need by measuring my existing case and computer, but firstly am worried about damaging my computer if I am not careful measuring, and secondly I am not confident my measurements will be accurate enough for the case, should I be concerned about this, or am I unlikely to damage a part and is to the nearest mm fine? And does anyone know of a spec or guide that brings these two specs effectively together?

I am designing all the parts in OpenSCAD and plan to get them laser cut, then it will be my job to fit it all together with bolts and screws, if that information is useful.

Will a PC shut itself down before permanent damage occurs if it's overheating?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 11:57 AM PDT

I built a new PC this past winter with all new parts, and it hasn't had a problem yet! However, I was gaming today for about an hour, and when I took off my headphones, my PC was louder than it's ever been! For whatever reason all of the case fans and the CPU cooler had stopped! The noise was from either the GPU or PSU fans desperately trying to stay cool.

When I took the door off, it felt like things were baking inside the tower, and I couldn't even touch heatsink of the CPU cooler it was so hot...

I turned the PC off and on again, and the case fans went on again, but with how hot things got, I'm worrying that something may have gotten damaged? Is there any way for me to run some checks to make sure things are running good, or is it the kind of thing where if it's working now it's OK?

I still need to check what actually stopped the fans. I played Apex for the first time on this PC today, so I'm wondering if that had anything to do with it?

Intel Core i3-10105F vs AMD Ryzen 3 3300X

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 05:06 AM PDT

Is i3-10105F better than AMD Ryzen 3 3300X? for things like desktop use, gaming etc.

according to https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i3-10105F-vs-AMD-Ryzen-3-3300X/m1482345vs4076 i3 gives better performance than amd. Is that true?

Also in my country i3 10105f is about 50 dollars less expensive.

    No longer scrolling smoothly?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 09:29 AM PDT

    I have a cat.

I love her very, very much, even though she was not my cat initially, but my grandmother's cat. My grandmother passed away a few months ago, and now I'm taking care of the cat. She's nearly 20, and she's at that point where she spends most of her time sleeping.

She likes keyboards. In fact, one day, I came home from work to find her sleeping on my keyboard. She had managed to open many, many google chrome tabs and while I haven't noticed anything major amiss, whenever I attempt to use the arrow keys to scroll up or down on web pages, it's much more slow and choppy, and the cursor indicator (the lil blinking line to show where your spot is, I don't know the actual term for it) is there, going line by line.

I'm sure there's a setting somewhere or a toggle shortcut, I'm just not sure where to find it. Any ideas?

And yes, I'm now in the habit of shutting everything off. I even unplug my keyboard before leaving, just in case.

is this pc good for my first build, and i have multiple question wich if you can respond it would be great.

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 01:54 PM PDT

So i want to build a pc mainly on amazon because where i live theres not any places wich i can buy pieces. I live in Canada so i dont know if the price will change for you. Here is the link to it: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/FKg3PV Theres still some things missing like graphic card and the operating system. I'll buy windows 10 later and the graphic card i might buy a used one at 500-550 $ might go for a rtx 2060 maybe i am overkilling with the rtx 2060 so if there's another card that i could buy please tell me cause i dont really know where to look to find a good one.

The price for the monitor is 240$ i dont know why its not mark

I just want to make sure that what i get is good for the price that i will be paying.

Is the motherboard the best i could get or there is better one wich i could get, and how do i know it fits i dont know everything with the micro ATX or mini ATX still a bit confused with that.

Same thing with the power supply will it fit in the case and will the case have enough airflow or i will need to buy other fans.

Are there any parts that i could upgrade or some that i shouldnt buy because they are bad.

i'm really not sure about this one might be a stupid question but will i need to buy thermal paste or theres going to be some included.

well thank you if you were able to help me

    Recommend a Comprehensive Watercooling Guide?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 01:49 PM PDT

I've only used AIOs in the past and would like to try doing my own with my GPU. Other than the waterblock, I don't think I really understand how to pick parts for the loop from start to finish. I know I need:

The block Reservoir Pump Radiator Fan? Fittings, tubing, misc hardware, etc

But I have no idea how to choose these things or how to plan it all out. Searching for guides tends to just be surface info or a video on how to install the waterblock, but maybe I'm not using the right verbiage? I would really appreciate if someone could link me to a good start-to-finish guide. I work in software and have built PCs/robots since I was a kid so I feel pretty competent for the act of doing it, but I don't want to just buy what makes sense to me and hope it works.

    Choosing Ethernet cable

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 01:47 PM PDT

Originally i was going to make myself custom cable but then i said to myself, fuck it, i buy some premade. First of all, raw cables are only available in lengths of 50, 100 and 305 which is absolute overkill and second of all, and i know this is stupid reason and i can't believe I'm choosing by this, but they are ugly. When i checked premade cables, most of them were from 'vention'. Idk how legit they are but they had cat7 cables which made me doubt any of their cables. Also flat cat6? Are they legit? Also are flat ones better or should I rather go with circular ones? I mean, i can hide flat ones under carpet (but I'm not really fan of carpets so i doubt i will ever have to do that) or maybe under the doors if there is big enough gap, but is it worth it? Won't they get more interference or won't be more fragile? Also, ones again, is Vention legit? Never heard of them and can't find much on them (or at least anything more professional). And ultimate question, should i go with premade cables? I feel like they are trying to bait me on it's looks and fuck me over with it's quality. Btw i would need between 15-50m of cable which might be a factor in the interference and stuff. Thanks

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 01:09 PM PDT

I'm going back to grad school as an Architect major and my macbook can't really handle the AutoCAD, GiS, and Photoshop loads anymore (barely got me thru undergrad). I'm trying to build a PC to use for gaming @ 1440p consistently and for doing graphical work. This is what I'm thinking of grabbing so far and would love any feedback! Thank you:

    • Ryzen 7 3700x (cheaper than the 5 3600 right now)

    • MSI B450 Gaming Carbon Pro Max Wifi

    • iCue H100i AIO

    • Corsair Venegance RAM (2 x 8)

    • Seagate 2TB 3.5" HDD

    • WD Blue 1TB M.2 SSD

    • RTX 2070 Super (currently own)

    • Lian Li Lancool II ATX Mid Tower

    • EVGA 650W 80+ Gold PSU

    Pc Upgrade

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 12:56 PM PDT

I'm looking to upgrade my computer. I currently have a core i7 processor with 16gb of ram. The graphics card needs a little work though. I am currently running with a GeForce gtx 1650 with 4gb DDR4. I know the graphics card market is looking pretty rough right now, and I only have a $400 budget right now. What should I be looking for?

Can a CPU heatsink block airflow within the case?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 02:40 PM PDT

    Hello frens!

My case is an overheating mess, so I ordered a CM Hyper 212 Black to replace my R5 3600's shitty stock, along w two Noctuas for intake. However, it wasn't until I completed my order that I noticed these heatsinks are COMICALLY LARGE. Since the new heatsink would be placed right in front of my only exhaust fan at the back, I was wondering if it would impact airflow for the worse. It wouldn't prevent air from being sent outside, right?

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    YAHH

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

My mans super wants to be able to stream and game simultaneously on youtube/twitch etc

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

modded MC. also probably will play CoD type fps games.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

The current build I managed with pcpartpicker is around $1200, I'd like to see if there's a way to knock maybe $300-500 off. We can probably get a windows license through a different program so I mean ik that's an easy $100.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

USA, alaska - no microcenter :(

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I know I'm trying to find a steep discount especially in the current market, so if there's some sacrifices that's okay. I still need to put studio type lights on the list also. My dude is 16 and has 0 experience, so this would be his first gaming pc.

Additionally I'm trying to get the price cut because the caseworker needs to approve the purchase and they are being lenient but I don't want to cause they too much trouble because it'll be easier to get it approved if I can submit it once and the first time.

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

    GPU upgrade

    Posted: 25 Jul 2021 12:12 PM PDT

Just after anyone's advice due to the costly step of upgrading my gpu. Currently have a gtx 1050ti and a ryzen 5 3600. What would be the most beneficial upgrade for a gpu? Was thinking an rtx 3060, bit have hear people say an rtx 2060 or 2070 is just as good and cheeper. Hard to tel which would be worth it more considering price and upgrade value. Any opinions appreciated, thanks

Is Ryzen 5 3400g worth the purchase?

Hi, I have been planning to build an entry pc as a birthday gift for myself and here in my country, GPUs are still too expensive.

I'm planning to use it for playing League of Legends and for my online classes.

Is Ryzen 5 3400g worth the purchase for an entry build? Or should I just save up and get a GPU. Thank you for reading, any answer would help a lot.

Ive had the pc for 2 years but i thought this would be the best place to ask
