I'm the dumbest person on the planet.

    Posted: 20 Jul 2021 04:27 AM PDT

I'd built my PC and was ready to try boot it. I try to boot it. Nothing.

I wasn't that confident with the cables so, I figured I'd probably plugged something in wrong. Nope. Everything was fine.

Ok, MAYBE I didn't put something in properly. Start with something simple, the ram. I take it out, put it back in, then try turn it on again. Nothing.

On the verge of tears. As far as troubleshooting goes, I have no idea what to do. I go have a break, come back an hour later.

    Right, I'm gonna fix this! I notice a cable out the corner of my eye... I didn't plug the monitor in.. ;-;

Edit: HOLY HELL 1K. Thanks for the awards kind strangers. Time to get a new fancy pancy avatar!

There's A LOT of comments, so sorry I can't reply to all of them! Thanks for sharing all your stories though. Makes me feel a little less dumb!

As for people asking why I didn't check the monitor if the fans were running. I figured it was probably the ram as I'd heard that was common. I was tired that day having spent hours on this and I wasn't fuctioning, so I couldn't really think of anything else to do.

Edit 2: WTH GUYS I WAS ONLY GONE FOR A FEW MORE HOURS

How bad GPU stocks really are

    Posted: 20 Jul 2021 08:34 AM PDT

I knew that the GPU shortage was bad, but I really got to see how bad it was first hand. Me and a friend got to our local Best Buy around 5 am local time, and the line was at least a 200 long already. By the time 7:30 rolled around, around 400 people were lined up. They probably got around 100 GPUs on the store, that's it. I had asked some people near the front, and they had waited since noon of the day before just to be in the first 20 people. I understand waiting but jesus, waiting around 10 hours for a GPU. Insane. My friends been trying since december to finish his build, and still can't. I know the combination of low socket production, mining, scalpers, and whatever else you want to add on but screw the market right now. It's impossible to be able to get anything at all. Nvidia, I know it's impossible, but there are literally thousands of gamers willing to spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars, the least you can do is give us a bit more information about how production is doing.

Samsung drive name says "500GB" despite being 1TB

    Posted: 19 Jul 2021 11:55 PM PDT

I just bought and installed a V-NAND SSD Samsung 970 Evo Plus NVMe M.2 1TB drive.
I formatted the drive and made sure it was properly recognized by my Windows 10 PC... but when I look under hardware, it says this device is called "Samsung SSD 970 EVO 500GB" despite everything else telling me the capacity for this drive is 1TB.
Should I be concerned about this? I am about to use Samsung Migration software to clone my C: drive to this new V-NAND SSD and use it for boot instead.

Can someone create a list of To-Do / Not To-Do things while building a PC? I'm a complete noob and I don't know shit about building.

    Posted: 20 Jul 2021 01:19 PM PDT

I've seen so many posts on this sub where people are troubleshooting their PC for not turning on, and in the end they had a small minor mistake. I want to build a PC but I don't know shit about it. Can someone list a very basic / ELI5 type list or steps to build a pc? Thank you folks. ❤️

PC won’t power on unless I cycle the PSU switch

    Posted: 20 Jul 2021 05:59 AM PDT

Hey all. Just completed my "once per decade" rebuild. "Camp out overnight at best buy to get a GPU" edition.

Ryzen 9 5900x Asus crosshair dark hero viii 32gb (2x16) trident gskill RAM H710i EVGA 1000 watt modular PSU Noctua NH-D15

Sometimes the PC starts up fine. Others, neither a) the case power button, b) an aftermarket button I bought to test, nor c) the mobo "start" button will power it up after I shut down.

The internet tells me it could basically be anything except the CPU.

Anyone ever deal with anything like this?

What cooler should I get for a Ryzen 5 5600X?

    Posted: 20 Jul 2021 06:18 AM PDT

I was gonna get a Dark Rock 4 but it's not available in Brazil, so I'm not sure what to get instead.

The most demanding game I intend to play is RDR2. I don't intend to overclock much either.

    Parts list here: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/P88fW3

Edit: Constructive criticism for my list would be much appreciated as well.

2k gaming/editing build, anything I should change about the parts?

    Posted: 20 Jul 2021 05:47 AM PDT

    general info

    • planning to update my computer from scratch (i'll only reuse my current storage) in about 4 or 5 months when graphic cards are (hopefully) cheaper. i'm trying to get RTX 3080/3080ti or 3070. i use two monitors, other one is 60 hz @ 1440p and my main is 144 hz @ 1440p. not overclocking.
    • i'd like to spend max. 2000 euros

    usage

    • 60-144hz gaming (assassin creed, tomb raider, rdr2, cyberpunk etc.)
    • video editing/graphic design/motion graphics
    • I tend to use programs like vegas pro, premiere and after effects, which is why I chose 32GB RAM and 3700X. I could possibly get 5900x but i'm not sure if it's overkill for me.

Is there anything I should change about the build? Planning to use this build for the next 5 years at least.

Is the CPU cooler enough for 3700X? or for 5900X, if i end up getting it instead? Also I have no idea about motherboard, i've only used intel so far so i don't really know the difference between B550 and X570 - basically my only "must have" is two m.2 places for ssd's.

Also, is it worth it getting platinum ranked PSU?

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Recently built this computer. Went to turn it on and nothing. I cannot get this computer to even turn on.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I have constructed this computer, deconstructed, and reconstructed it. No change.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

I do not have any photos yet. I am happy to provide any.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I've built quite a number of computers, but I have never had an issue where it wouldn't even turn on. I think it could be a bad power supply, but I am sure I am forgetting something very basic. Any help is apprciated.

    Humming noise from case?

    Posted: 20 Jul 2021 01:08 PM PDT

So i finished my build with replacing the case fans with some beQuiet silent wings 3. Now my case is actually very quiet, so quiet that I realized a quiet but somewhat annoying humming/vibrating noise from the case. First it was more noticeable, after disconnecting the powercable from my HDD, there was almost the same humming noise but quieter. It appears randomly for 5-10 second with a low humming sound every 2 seconds.

PC-Parts that could be the reason:

PSU: Seasonic Prime 850w Titanium AIO Cooler: NZXT Kraken x63 (with the NZXT fans) GPU: EVGA 3080 Ti Ultra FTW3 2 SSD's Case: NZXT H510i Sleeve cables 2 Silent Wings 3 Fans

    I appreciate any help

    1080p or 1440p for RTX 3060 Ti paired with Ryzen 5 5600x?

    Posted: 19 Jul 2021 10:55 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I recently managed to get a 3060 Ti to pair with a Ryzen 5 5600x, along with 16GB of 3600 MHz RAM. I intend to play mostly Warzone on this build and I'm stuck on deciding between a 1080p 144Hz monitor or a 1440p 144Hz monitor.

I was wondering if any of you guys have any experience with this CPU + GPU pairing in Warzone and any opinions on whether I should stick to 1080p or spend the extra cash on 1440p. I'm aware Warzone is mostly CPU intensive, so I plan on doing some overclocking on both the CPU and GPU, but I can't seem to find any good videos on YouTube that show average frame rate on competitive settings (as in 120 FOV, high particle quality, etc.) for Warzone and most cap around 130 frames at 1440p resolution.

Any thoughts/opinions as well as monitor recommendations are highly appreciated!

EDIT: Thanks for the responses guy. Looks like I'm getting a 1440p monitor, forgot I have a $100 visa gift card lying around so might as well put it to good use. Anyone know if the LG 27GN800-B is any good?

    Monitor not going above 60Hz

    Posted: 20 Jul 2021 04:46 AM PDT

Just finished my new build today super super happy with it but going into nvidia control pane it looks like I can't select an option higher than 60Hz? Which is strange considering on my old pc it went up to 100Hz which again (sorry) is even stranger because it says the monitor I own can go up to 144Hz but 100 was the highest option I had. So what's the go?

    Computer crashing when using xmp

    Posted: 20 Jul 2021 12:22 PM PDT

I have an Asus tuf x570-plus Ryzen 5 1600 4x8gb crical ballistic 3600 cl16. Crucial nvme 1tb Radeon 6900xt(I know beefy gpu slower cpu looking to upgrade) Thermaltake 850wat 80gold cpu. *Edit to add psu.

When I'm using Asus version of xmp to get the ram to the 3600mhz it will crash in windows. But if I use xmp and manually set speed at 3400mhz it works fine. Could this be faulty ram?

The mother board has the regular 8pin and an extra 4pin power. Do I need to use the 4pin to get the 3600mhz?

BIOS update needed for CPU upgrade?

    Posted: 20 Jul 2021 12:15 PM PDT

Hey guys! I've recently upgraded my dad's notebook (HP ProBook 4530s) with an SSD and more RAM but I also bought a used i7 2670QM that arrived yesterday which I haven't installed yet. I just wanted to make sure whether or not I need to update the BIOS to change the CPU.

The current processor is an i3 2310M; the motherboard in question is a Hewlett-Packard 167C KBC Version 22.24 and the BIOS is Hewlett-Packard 68SRR Ver. F. 40.

Newbie PC builder. Would love some advice on this rough draft of parts!

    Posted: 20 Jul 2021 12:12 PM PDT

Ive been in the market for a pretty beefy PC. One capable of running fairly hi-end games, but also is a beast with music production. A few things I'm looking for are: Very fast storage, and LOTS of it. Ability to run games up to 1440p, up to or higher then 60fps... and thats honestly it. A benchmark I'm shooting for is to play Monster Hunter Worlds with the HD texture pack at 1440p/60fps.

From what I hear the GPU I'm getting is a little overkill. But ive also been told GPU is one of the parts you should be spending the most money on? Well I'm willing to overkill on the cpu/gpu if it means I get a nice PC that lasts me a long time.

    Parts List

    CPU AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
CPU Cooler be quiet! Pure Rock 2
Motherboard MSI MAG X570 TOMAHAWK WIFI ATX AM4
    Memory Ripjaws V Series 32 GB - DDR4-3200 (2 sticks)
Storage Western Digital 1TB M.2-2280 (2 of them)
GPU EVGA GeForce RTX 3060 12 GB ( If I can even get one lol) I am willing to pay inflated prices if it means I get off this danm laptop ive been stuck on since 2018.
    Case Lian Li PC-O11 ATX
    PSU Corsair RM 650 W 80+ Gold

Is anything here too overpowered for what I want to do?

    Is anything too underpowered?

Because this is also my music production station, should I be focusing more on CPU then GPU?

    Thanks!
