Bought a GPU from a friend. Corner got damaged during shipping. Is this still usable?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 11:10 AM PDT

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Recently bought a used MSI 1080ti Gaming X from a friend. It just got here, and when I opened it the corner was bent and the plastic for the power connector was broken. I haven't tried plugging it in or bending anything back, I only removed the backplate to get one of the pictures. Is this salvageable/usable or is it the end for this card?

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Corner of board with backing taken off

    View from end of card

View looking down at the power connector

Edit: Going with the recommendations on here he contacted the shipping company. Unfortunately they didn't inform him that what he paid only covered $100 of the value, so they're only willing to give him that $100. This has definitely been a learning experience though.

How hard is to actually find a GPU at MSRP?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 09:47 AM PDT

I'm saving up for a 3070 and I understand the whole microchip shortage and shit and I know how hard it is to get one at MSRP. However, I also understand that the internet has a habit of blowing things out of proportion and exaggerating things. So how hard is it to actually get one at MSRP?

    60-80 fps on R7 3800X, 3200mhz 16gb ram, 3070 FE Assassins Creed Odyssey

Hey all, just wondering if 60-80 fps on ultra 1440p is normal for AC:Odyssey with my build? It seems pretty low especially with a 3070, any tips or things I could try to check?? Thank you all

Is it feasible to buy a cheapo desktop and just slap a good graphics card, PSU, and CPU in it?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 11:52 AM PDT

As the title says, would it be possible to buy some cheap tower, throw an RTX 3080 and an i7 in there and change the PSU if/as needed? Well I mean, I know it would technically be possible, but would it last? Would it be gaming rig quality? Would it be... recommended? etc. It feels dumb and like you'd end up spending as much money at the end of it all as you would if you had just bought or built a good PC from scratch, but I wanted to get the thoughts of people with experience in PC building, as I have none.

Switched CPU and now computer is randomly shutting off. No rhyme/reason

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 09:58 AM PDT

Hi, thanks for checking out my thread.

I have had this build for close to 4 years now.

    • I5 8600k

    • MSI Z370 Gaming Pro Carbon AC

    • Gigabyte 1080ti

    • Corsair RM750x

    • 4x8gb Corsair Vengance RGB Pro DDR4 3000 MHz C15

I recently updated the BIOS on the Z370 board to support a new 9900k that I purchased. I have since installed the 9900k in the same board.

Since I installed the 9900k, the system has started crashing randomly. I've had the computer on for 15 hours straight with no crashes, and then sometimes it will just crash randomly out of nowhere.

All temps are fine (CPU sitting around 40c, GPU around 50).

When looking at the Event Viewer I am getting a "Critical", and "Error" when this occurs.

    Event Viewer

    Log Name

This would lead me to believe there is an issue with the Power Supply. Does this sound accurate? My power supply should be fine for these components, but maybe there is another issue with it. The computer never had this issue for the 4 years I had the 8600k installed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: The computer shuts down entirely, there is no BSOD. Just black screen, then it re-boots after 5-10 seconds on it's own.

Good colour accurate IPS monitor for under $300?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 11:16 AM PDT

I'm looking for a 24" ips monitor for graphic design/art and casual gaming that has great colour accuracy under $300cad. I was looking at the Viewsonic VP2458, but if there are better options out there I'd love for some input!

    Trying to buy a CPU

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 11:45 AM PDT

I've been wanting to build a pc for some time now and i haven't started buying anything bc of the GPU prices being ridiculous, but I'm starting to consider a CPU with integrated graphics (ryzen 5 probably) and use it without a dedicated GPU in the meantime...is that a good idea???

    This is overwhelming.

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 11:37 PM PDT

I want to build a PC but I'm honestly confused and overwhelmed. I don't know anything about PCs because I used consoles all my life. I feel like no matter how much I read about building a PC I'm not learning anything. I will try to make a list of parts but it seems like there is no overpriced decent GPUs. It isn't like I can just pay the extra money either because I don't have an allowance and my dad is currently on his deathbed due to leukemia (And the cancer has spread to optical nerve so he is blind ) and my mom works for just over the minimum wage in Florida. Under regular circumstances I would be able to get a job because I'm 15 but I have to stay home and take care of my dad because he's blind and is in a very bad mental state (Hallucinations, depression, anxiety all currently are hitting him hard. Just this morning I woke up to him screaming because he thought our family died but it was a hallucination). I want to build a PC but I don't think I can. Is there any way I could somehow build a PC that can at least run Warzone at 1080p and 60fps without spending more than $600. Even $600 is going to take me a long time to save up. I have about $100 that I've saved up over about 5 months so basically by the time I get enough money the game is gonna be dead if I can even get a PC of that quality. The more I type the more stupid I sound to myself.

Finally upgrading from my 6 year old build. I probably won't upgrade again for another 4-5 years at least, all your suggestions will be greatly helpful!

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 11:32 AM PDT

I spent nights rummaging through this subreddit, cramming information that helped me finalize these parts. Budget is not a big issue, could spend some more money for a better overall build.

Still could be doing something stupid, please share any improvements that pop in your head.

Is 4k really worth the extra money? I'm not sure wether to make the jump with a new monitor and gpu (whenever I find one) just wanted to know your opinions and experiences. I am currently playing in 1080p with my 1650 😀

Good program for monitoring temps, wattage, usage, etc of components on desktop?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 08:01 AM PDT

I just finished a PC build, and reading about people using the wrong HDMI port for years, or a bad PSU, is making me a little nervous. I'd like a program that shows me the temps of my components, how hard they're working, and so on. What are your favorite programs for this purpose?

Do I buy Intel or AMD? (Or wait a few months?)

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 12:31 PM PDT

Hey guys, I've been looking around for a new CPU for quite some time since the RTX 3080 came out. I ended up buying a RTX 3080 to pair with my i7 8700K.

I'm just wondering if its worth me upgrading from the 8700K right now or do I wait? I want to get the best performance I can but not have something newer come out.

I've been looking at benchmarks between the i9 11900k vs Ryzen 9 5900x and I cant decide what to do. Just wondering what some of your opinions are if you had the same set up as me.

    CPU: Intel i7 8700K De-Lid @ 4.8 MHz
Graphics Card: EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 ULTRA
    Motherboard: ASUS PRIME Z370-A
    Hard Drives : 1TB & 512GB NVMe, 2TB & 3TB Seagate Barracuda
    RAM: 4x8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3200 MHz
    Power Supply: NZXT C850
CPU Cooler: Current: Noctua NH-D15 Spare: Corsair H100i

16x multi-display setup for graphically demanding application

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 07:50 AM PDT

Hi, I'm developing a game for a specific setup that uses up to 16 fullHD displays/projectors. The application will involve moderately demanding 3D graphics and will run in windowed mode with a resolution of 15630 x 2160px (2 rows of 8 x FullHD). I need to build a PC that can handle the workload and IO. My budget is around €3500,-.

I am not very experienced with multi-monitor stuff and have some questions:

    • Would you recommend using multiple NVIDIA cards in SLI in this case?
    • Can I just use one "good" card to render the game and 3 cheap cards to add more video ouputs? I'm considering to buy 1xRTX3080 and 3xGTX1050 - would this approach work?
    • Does anybody here have any experience with a similar setup? What did you use / what problems did you encounter?

    Thank you very much!

EDIT: Thank you for your help everybody! I think I found a solution using 4x4k outputs and 4 video wall controllers to split them into 4 FullHD outputs each, resulting in 16 outputs.

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 02:30 PM PDT

Will upgrading from a i5-6400 to Ryzen 5 3600 make a meaningful improvement in gaming when paired with a gtx 970?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 11:58 AM PDT

I'm planning to upgrade to a 1080/1080 ti when I can but for now I'm going to upgrade the proprietary components from my prebuild and the CPU.

So I'm asking - will this CPU upgrade have a noticeable difference in flat screen or VR gaming?

    Building PC’s for a hobby without funds (?) / Services / Making a living (?)

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 07:16 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

So this might be a weird topic, and not a common asked question, but here it goes:

In the past 2 years that I have been into "PC gaming" I have build my own system, and rebuild it a bunch of times including new case, new hardware, swap out parts and build a second system for spare parts. I absolutely love doing it, all the options you have, different configurations, the possibilities are (almost) endless!

As you all well know, building PC's is an expensive hobby! Probably just as many of you, I don't have the personal funds to build another 3/5/8 systems, or even 1.

So to get to my question/discussion; do any of you guys have a way of building systems without breaking your own bank? Do you build for friends, as a paid service to people on maybe craigslist? Any of you work at a company that have a build service or anything of that sort?

I'd like to hear your stories!

    Have a good day ya'll!

Is the Inwin P75 a good PSU?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2021 01:52 PM PDT

I was at Canada Computers when I saw this 750W PSU from inwin for 108 CAD and decided to pull the trigger, shortly after I realized it was a final sale (no returns) and I didn't even check if it's a good PSU, so I'm kind of nervous now and I'm here to ask for you guys' opinion,

Is this power supply good? it's this one

I hear like nothing about it online so I'm getting more nervous lol I feel like I screwed myself over..

Can anyone with this PSU can calm my nerves?
