Building a PC, please rate it!

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 03:27 AM PDT

Hey guys, building a PC and I've gone with the parts below. I know I'm late with asking because I've ordered the parts, but I just want to know if I made some bad choices. Just want to calm my nerves with this post I guess. I've tried to keep the cost down because of the GPU-price but still choose good parts. The MOBO was on sale for 270$ in my country. It's intended for a 1440p 144hz monitor (Acer Predator XB27HUA).

MOBO- Asus ROG STRIX Z590-F GAMING WIFI ATX

    CPU - Intel Core i7-11700K

    CPU Cooler - Noctua NH-U12A

GPU - MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 8 GB GAMING X TRIO

    RAM - Kingston HyperX Predator 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200Mhz CL16

    OS Storage - Kingston KC2500 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME

    Extra Storage - Kingston KC2500 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME

    PSU - Corsair RM850W 80+ Gold

    Case - Phanteks Eclipse P600S

Rtx 3060ti upgrade from 1660 super worth it?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 07:50 PM PDT

I found a decently priced 3060ti and am wondering if upgrading from my 1660 super would be worth it. Anyone have experience with a similar upgrade? Thanks! CPU: Ryzen 5 3600x Resolution: 1440p ultrawide

Edit: Thanks everyone! I'm picking it up on Thursday! Looking forward to trying out raytracing and dlss!

Why is my Ryzen 5 3600 running at 90 degrees Celsius?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2021 11:39 PM PDT

A few months ago, I built my first gaming pc. The specs are a Ryzen 5 3600, an RX 570, and an MSI a520m pro motherboard all in a Phanteks p360a. At first, my thermals were pretty bad, with my GPU running at 80 degrees under load, so I just purchased the new case, the p360a. Now, it's a lot better, staying below 70 degrees at all time when I play Battlefield V.

However, I never checked if the CPU temperature is alright, as I just assumed blindly that 90 degrees is fine. After searching it up yesterday though, I found that this was very high, and that overall my temps for the CPU were hot - 55 to 60 degrees idle, 70 degrees just after booting up, 85 to 90 degrees when playing Battlefield V.

I was now very worried, so I searched up solutions. I am running the stock cooler, so I followed some people's advice and remounted it, checking that I had removed the plastic film, and then ensured that the preapplied thermal paste was touching the cpu. I remounted it, making sure that the four screws were as tight as they could go (they have springs in them), and then restarted my computer. No change. Still very high temperatures. I then tried undervolting the cpu in bios, dropping it from the auto 1.45 or so volts to 1.28V. At first, this seemed to help a little bit, but then my pc settled at the same 55 to 60 degrees idle, and 85 to 90 degrees in Battlefield V. I am now at my wits end with what could be wrong, for many people on forums I was searching around on have said that although the stock cooler is not great, temps that high should not be happening and something else must be wrong for the CPU to be running that hot.

If anyone has any ideas as to what else may be wrong, and causing such high temps, I would be very grateful if you could suggest it.

I would be very willing to buy a new CPU cooler, but I just feel like it wouldn't be solving the issue at the root, as my temps are too high for it just to be because of the stock cooler and so it would be trying to counteract whatever is causing the heat. However, if you guys think that it would be a good idea to try swapping the cooler or the motherboard (which I can both afford to swap, but a new CPU less so), I would be willing to try that.

What could be the reason why my CPU is so hot?

The Appreciation Post You All Deserve

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 07:18 AM PDT

Pics and Parts at bottom if you'd just like to skip the thank you.

THANK YOU!!! Just wanted to say how thankful I am for all of your help. Thank you to the Creators and Mods for putting this all together and maintaining such a great community. Huge huge thank you for the Wiki and all the effort you put into it - it was incredibly helpful and I learned so much from it. Thank you to everyone who comments regularly looking to help people like myself whether asking for a full build or explanations for different things PC related.

I decided around Christmas 2019 I was going to build a PC and my buddy lead me here. I spent a lot of time reading through the Wiki and watching every video in there as well as watching and subbing to every content creator mentioned on those lists. I figured, if I'm gunna do this thing, I'm gunna do it right and actually learn it so I can continue working on it. I finally felt comfortable in my knowledge and had assembled a parts list that I felt would fulfill my wants nicely. Then, Ryzen 5000 series announcement - figured "hey, I've waited this long, why not wait a bit more". THEN, Nvidia 3000 series anouncement - "yea, I guess I'll wait for that too". Why not, right? Welp, almost 2 years later I can officially say I have built my PC. I didn't manage to snag the white 3080 of my dreams but I'll be damned if my RX6800 doesn't crush any game I've played thus far. I actually backordered my RAM from B&H because I figured I would have to wait a lot longer for GPU availability. But then I lucked out about 3 days later and managed to pick up my RX6800 for MSRP from AMD Direct. I was absolutely buzzing and I had to wait a solid month after receiving my GPU to even build as I waited for my RAM lol.

It is now fully complete though. I technically had it fully built 2 weeks ago but didn't have my Uni Fans yet so never posted anything. I can't even tell you how happy and excited I was when my baby started up and POSTed on my first try. I am an HVAC Technician so lately my hours have been insane and have not been able to put too much time into the PC which delayed me being able to do all my downloads and updates as well as figuring out all my software but o man have I been having fun. I changed out all my case fans for the Uni Fans this past weekend and they look so clean. After installing them, I had an issue where the PC would start directly into BIOS with a "CPU Fan Error". I shut my computer off so fast when I saw that, but then I realized all my fans had been lit up and running lol. So I restarted and realized there was no actual issue, I had just installed all my wires to the Uni Fan Controller and never landed anything to the MOBO CPU_Fan header so the MOBO was logging a non-existing error. Went ahead and popped the wire for the radiator off the controller and onto the proper header and now we're back to buttery smooth startups. I plan on doing an official first benchmarking this weekend when I have time so let me know if you want to check that out. In the mean time, here is my new baby and all the specs:

    Going to build my PC

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 01:06 PM PDT

Hey, no question to ask or anything, i just wanted to share my enthusiasm about my first PC build.

I'm 14 years old and i was making some money in last few months by web dev, currently i have old HP laptop that is so slow that im happy that i could do programming on it to this day.

After saving up, programming for some people, I can proudly say that I'm missing only 100€ to build my first computer. I'm super proud of myself because all that money i made are my own, not even one cent is from my mom's pocket - she doesn't support me on anything so getting some money from her to support my PC build would be impossible.

It's not much, but it's honest work. Right now I'm just waiting till i get some more programming job and save that last hundred euros to buy all i need. But summer started and I'm not going to get any jobs anytime soon, because all people i worked for were students that I did their homework for, and majority of them have summer break from school right now. Maybe at the end of summer when we all get back to school i will complete it.

And that's all I wanted to say, I'm just really proud of myself and because my family won't support me I wanted to share my happiness with someone, at least online.

    Blood sweat and tears

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 07:27 AM PDT

Well, it's finally done, after 34 years of attempting to adult I have finally built my first gaming PC. I will say this, don't open the back and don't talk about cable management. However it is now finally up and working, drivers being installed and my Samsung SSD now showing up.

I would like to say it was fun, and it was to a degree, the cables really did my head in. That said I'm pretty proud of it, next big step will be to stress test it and make sure my cooling is alright.

My brother's PC won't connect to the monitor.

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 02:06 PM PDT

The case fans and CPU fans all turn on. The motherboard has a little white light (Indicating it's on???).

He is using a 3200g, with an MSI B450 Pro-VDM Max. 8gs of viper ram(i think). It's a cooler master case if that matters. Could the storage be the Issue? Thanks in advance.

    Explaining the issue more:

So we plugged it in via VGA and HDMI and yet nothing turn on just: "No input detected".

What do I need for better FPS?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 12:50 PM PDT

Sorry if I'm putting this the wrong way, I am not good with computers at all. My mom bought me a prebuilt set up as a surprise gift and I've had it for 4 years. It was never the best, its pretty slow but it can run most games fine without lag.

So I come here to ask: What part/upgrade would I need to run more difficult on the computer games? Or perhaps fix my FPS? I wanted to screenshare a game over Discord with my friend (Life Is Strange) and was very devastated to see the screenshare absolutely ruin the FPS. I don't know what it would run it at beforehand but it ran smoothly with fine graphics. With the screenshare, it was at like 1 FPS or even less. Would I need a better graphics card for this? A better monitor? Please help, I don't have any tech savvy friends and really want to play these games through Discord.

Edit: my CPU is around 2.46 GHz, GPU is 0, RAM is 8 GB

    Damaged X570/3090 in shipping

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 12:14 PM PDT

Well.. my biggest fear for shipping my computer overseas back home happened.

    https://ibb.co/album/v3KTD0

I've moved the 3090 into the PCI3 slot. Not ideal as it is removing an intake fan from the bottom - plus performance issues maybe??

When I shipped it I put it into the original PC case box (lian lan cool II mesh), and then put that box snuggly into a pelican case with cushion so there would be no moving parts. I was worried about the graphics card though. I put it facing down so all the weight was laying on the motherboard if the box was laid down upright and held in that position for all of transport. Of course, it wasn't. So the GPU sagged even with a support brace and it popped out of the motherboard during shipping.

Doesn't look as bad as some shipping horrors I've seen, and hoping the ideal fix is just to get a new X570 board and spend 3 hours swapping everything in and out. I insured the PC with FedEx so I'll see how that goes.

Moral of the story: Pull the GPU or get that self forming package chemical stuff to shape to fit inside the case.

    My first build ever

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 05:44 AM PDT

Hello! I've been lurking on this subreddit for several years now and it has been such a tremendous help with running a tight ship of knowledge on PC parts. I bought a pre-built in 2015 shortly before I graduated high school to send myself off to college with a gaming pc. I later found out that I made a huge mistake (outside of buying a pre-built lol)! With good intentions of upgrading down the line, my prebuilt case was too compact and thus I was extremely limited to the gpu's I wanted to use to upgrade. Thanks to that trauma, I made sure I would never run into this problem again.

Fast forward to 2020, I started collecting parts for my first build, about one part a month. It was a graduation present for myself for finishing my Chemical Engineering degree. I was so excited to finally afford and build a high-end PC and then… the GPU hellscape. I was sure things would pick back up in 2021. Well… nope. Things were looking very grim.

    Until…

A very good friend of mine hopped in a Best Buy line for a 3080 Ti and managed to snag one for me. We met up and I bought it off of him at MSRP (what a bro)!

Thus, my build was done. And I waited until July 4th weekend to come visit my friends and spend the day building. And thank god I did! My PCIe extension cable ended up being the culprit of the pc not posting, my friend quickly figured out.

Thank you to everyone for being a part of this community! I couldn't have done it without you!

    The first boot :)

Building a PC in a Carpeted Apartment

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 09:47 AM PDT

    Hey everyone!

I finally got my hands on a GPU so I plan on building a PC in the next week or so, but I was hoping for some advice first because my entire apartment is carpeted which I know can be a shock hazard.

My current plan is to go barefoot, avoid shuffling around, and to do the build on my (wooden) kitchen table.

Do you think this is too risky for a $1400 card? Do you have any tips for minimizing the risk? What should I ground myself to? Is there a material I can put over the carpet to reduce the static build up? Should I just do it at a friend's house instead?

Thank you for any advice you can offer!

Remote gaming PC with multiple users?!

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 02:38 PM PDT

    Hey folks!

I'm a mobile developer, have been using mac for quite a while, and tbh I totally forgot how it is to use windows.

Now, things are going good and I'm thinking about building a gaming unit to have some fun, but maybe also tackle some other needs, so I wonder if it's possible (and not outrageously expensive) to have a PC that can:

    - 2 persons use it through VNC with different users at the same time

    - play games through an iPad/Mac/phone

    - run Android Emulator fast (also through VNC)

Maybe those aren't big challenges, but keep in mind I'm out of my comfort zone. Also, I mention VNC but may use a faster software if available...

    Thanks in advance

    psu with p2 connector?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 02:23 PM PDT

I bought a proprietary prebuilt a couple days ago and I am trying to put a gtx 970 in it but the psu it comes with doesn't have enough p4 (6pin) connectors to power the gpu. So I stopped by and picked up a 450w psu and came to the realization that the proprietary motherboard doesn't use standard 24 pin as power and instead uses a p2 connector. And I cant find a adaptor or psu that has a p2 connector anywhere. any advice or help? I can send pictures if need be.

    Which PSU should I get?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 12:10 PM PDT

Hey, so here are my current PC specs:

    i3-9100F

    GTX 1050 Ti (overclocked)

    500GB SSD

    1TB HDD

    16GB Ram

shitty Thermaltake 500W PSU (not even bronze certified)

So I'm thinking of upgrading my GPU. I haven't really bothered changing or getting a better PSU up until now as my GTX 1050 Ti doesn't even need power from the PSU. I'm getting a GTX 1660 Super or 1070. As they obviously both consume power from the PSU I thought it would be a good idea to upgrade the power supply first. I've looked around for a bit and I see the Corsair CX450M 450W Bronze Certified PSU is selling near me. Would it be a good upgrade or should I buy a different PSU? If so please tell me the names and the price. Thank you!

    PC Build/Parts Help

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 11:44 AM PDT

    Hello,

I have been thinking about building a PC for a long time now. I am wanting a PC that will last me a long time or something that is considered "future proof." This is my first time building a PC and I was wondering if you all could give me some advice or feedback on these parts. Let me know your opinions and certain parts I should add, switch, or remove. Thanks. (P.S. I will be using this PC for gaming and medical school tasks, thus the higher need for Memory)

    Worth it?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2021 01:28 PM PDT

Found a cyber power prebuilt at Walmart that had a Ryzen 7 and an rtx 3060. It was stickered at 1200. I thought about getting it just for the gpu and maybe the CPU, to upgrade from my 2070 super and ryzen 3800x at home. From what I can see, the 3060 generally outperforms the 2070S. Also, I could throw the old GPU and maybe the CPU into the case and even make a little money, based on the current market I'm seeing. Should I have taken on some credit debt more to get a slight upgrade and sell later?

Is this a low quality switch or what should i do? I really like the look of it, but i also don't want a 'crappy' keyboard. Please give some advice.

The PC tells me a certain device isnt connected and it cant boot properly? I was just on the computer just now and after restarting it started doing this. Not sure what the issue is.Is the GPU just not seated properly? Never had this issue before.
