    Simple Questions - April 30, 2021

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 05:00 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    Thats life for you

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 06:11 AM PDT

I've wanted a pc since I was 15. I told myself in high school I couldn't afford it. I got to college and told myself it would distract me. I promised myself after my degree that I would build one as a celebration. And now i'm here. Graduating in a few days. And everything is ruined. I don't want to settle really for a lower end or pre built, so I will continue to wait. I know this post isn't useful but I just wanted to vent.

I built my GF a low-end gaming PC for $300 using mostly secondhand parts

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 05:51 PM PDT

I've got a fairly high-end system (R5 3600, RTX2070) that my girlfriend loves to commandeer to play The Sims 4 on. It's her favorite game but neither her old HP laptop nor her Macbook can play it well. Experiencing it on a gaming PC was eye-opening and she refuses to go back to that.

She's a student(future teacher) and is nearly done with her semester so to celebrate I wanted to build her a rig that will let her play on high-ish settings with a good framerate at 1080p. Something like a machine that would have been considered midrange circa 2014 but with a few modern conveniences added. Something nice for her, but also so I can get my desktop back :)

After a couple weeks of scouring Facebook Marketplace, this is what I ended up with:

    PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price
CPU Intel Core i7-2600 3.4 GHz Quad-Core Processor Purchased For $50.00

Storage ADATA Ultimate SU800 256 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive Purchased For $37.99
Video Card MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2 GB Video Card Purchased For $80.00
Case Cooler Master MasterBox Q300L MicroATX Mini Tower Case Purchased For $20.00
Power Supply EVGA 500 W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply Purchased For $0.00
    Wireless Network Adapter TP-Link Archer TX50E PCIe x1 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax Wi-Fi Adapter Purchased For $44.99

    Photo Album

CPU, stock cooler, MoBo, 8 GB RAM: This came as a bundle. A guy on FB was selling the bones of his old gaming PC for $100. 4c/8t Sandy Bridge means we're in business. It idled around 70C in initial testing so I re-pasted it with some Arctic Silver I had leftover. Now it chills at 40C. This also included a case and a SATA cable. I ended up using the cable but ditched the case in favor of a newer one.

4 GB RAM: Another FB find. This was supposed to be 2x4GB but one of the sticks was DOA :(. Not sure if I fried it or not. He handed it to me with no packaging. Oh well. Benchmarks didn't show any slowdown from having a single-channel extra stick so in it goes.

Case: Finding this felt serendipitous because I was looking at buying it retail for it's smaller size and price point. I responded to a 17-week-old-and-forgotten-about listing on FB and got lucky. The materials feel pretty cheap, because it is!!! But it breathes well, looks ok, and has a decent front panel. It was missing some screws and whatever that shielding next to the PCI slots is.

Speaking of which, add $6 to that total cost for a USB 3.0-to-2.0 header convertor since the motherboard is too old to have 3.0.

SSD: Here's our first modern touch. A must for snappy performance. I ended up buying this retail. Storage is cheap right now and there weren't any local deals. It's mounted behind the mobo because the case was missing its 2.5" mounting screws.

GPU: From FB. I didn't feel good about paying $80 for a 750ti but that's the GPU market right now. At least the seller re-pasted it. It's strong enough for The Sims 4 and it runs super cool and quiet to boot.

PSU: Alright I know not everyone can get one for free. This was a gift from my cousin to whom I gave some parts for his gaming PC last year. It helps to build up some good karma. It's non-modular so I had to stuff a lotta cables in the back of the case.

Wireless adapter: I went a little crazy here because I wanted WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 capability. Modern conveniences right? For a true barebones budget you can find USB dongles for cheaper.

(Not shown: I tried out a cheap Chinese PCIe USB controller to connect the front panel for true USB 3.0 but it would always wake the machine up from shutdown and sleep after 3 seconds. Oh well.)

    Performance

It scores about 4000 in Fire Strike and 12500 in Night Raid. More importantly, it stays around 50-70 FPS in Sims 4 with a few visual effects turned down. For shits and giggles, I fired up Doom 2016 and managed to get about 35 fps on 1080p high in Vulkan lol

Web browsing and general desktop stuff is very responsive, not much slower than my own machine. Overall I was kinda blown away by how well this 10 year old processor is holding up.

This thing ended up being a lot of fun to assemble. I really liked finding a use for old hardware that might have gone to waste otherwise. And it was nice going through the build process without having to stress over the large dollar amounts that comes with new tech.

I'm planning to give it to her after her finals are done and she has the time to play.

    Thanks for reading.

PS if anybody knows where I can find a cover for that open space next to the PCIe slots I'd really appreciate it

I built my first PC six weeks ago and it's incredible.

I typed a million questions into Google when buying and building and this page was always there, every question followed by a great, informative answer.

This is just a thank you. My grades are up, I'm happier and now own a great PC.

    Appreciate you all :)

Don't forget to pat and praise your pc!

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 10:27 AM PDT

Turning the pages back to the time when that delicate machine's haven't born yet. Still growing at the womb of the market, growing its part one by one carefully.

Every builder would rejoice at their newborn pc, like a parent. Feelings rose up that's like wanting to cherish, hoping for it to last forever. Thinking about all the things that could possibly do.

Ever since that day, your pc has always been working hard; for your joys, works, entertainment, studies... Your pc had always been there for you. To all the times when you're having a bad day, it would always do anything that it could do just to cheer you up. When the world is turning against you, it would create a world just for you and welcome you wholeheartedly.

Though we might not appreciate it as much as it deserved because it is what to be expected for this emotionless machine. Let us never forget to express our gratitude, for this machine is already a part of our life.

And as a part of our life, it's no longer an emotionless machine. And just like life, there comes the inevitable wear and tear of the now aged and outdated piece of our soul that meets its end.

Is it worth it to build a PC if you have a budget of $2500?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 11:11 AM PDT

My friend wants my assistance in building their first PC (Budget stated in title). I warned them, however, against it stating the current market is not very accommodating right now for optimal spending on a PC. My question is: If they're willing to spend all the cash and does not particularly care that that market is scuffed, should I just entertain their want to build a PC. I'm currently debating this to myself right now but I'd like to extra input from other individuals aside from myself.

(PC Specs for PC in-question) https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Bkp2nL

(I checked the rules, I shouldn't be breaking any rules so here's to hoping I don't get bonked.)

So quick question, what kind of questions should one ask before buying. Used GPU? What kind of things should the buyer be looking for in a used GPU to make sure you aren't getting scammed or sold a broken GPU?

    Be Aware of Molex Splitters!

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 12:33 PM PDT

When I finished building my pc and turned it on I heard a weird sound, I started taking parts out like the graphics card to understand where the sound was coming. After investigating, I found the sound was coming from the front fans because of the molex splitter that I used because the fan cables were to short.

Now I bought a fan cable extender and the weird noise is gone, all this to say that if your fans are making a strange noise don´t worry it might be the molex and also an advice DON´T use molex fan splitters, just use it while you are waiting for your fan extender or splitter to arrive.

Is it worth overclocking factory OC'd cards?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 09:40 AM PDT

Are those cards tuned to their relative max clocks already or are they just somehow capable of providing higher boost clocks at stock and thus worth overclocking manually aswell? Really intrested to know if it would be worth trying to manually tune my factory OC'd Zotac RTX 2060 AMP

    Bend Pins of R5 1600

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 12:11 PM PDT

Hello everyone, I've managed to bend the pins back and wanted to test if the CPU works. Can I just pop it into my actual PC and let some stress test run over it ?. Or can this cause my pc to get damaged in some way?. Also what is a good testing routine for the cpu and what is a alternative to where I could get it tested ?. Thanks in advance :)

Just About Ready - Is There Anything I Forgot?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 02:11 PM PDT

    Howdy all,

It seems that my long, and at times seemingly impossible, quest to build my dream computer without paying above MSRP is finally coming to an end. I just got the notification that the CPU I ordered from Amazon in February is arriving on Monday, and I wanted to run everything past you guys one more time to make sure I haven't forgotten anything, or made any mistakes. The last time I built a PC was 10 years ago, so any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    Gaming, streaming, possibly editing.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I'm going to be using both a Dell 1440p monitor, as well as an LG CX48 4k TV depending on what I'm playing, and I'm looking to hit that sweet spot of Ultra settings without sacrificing too much FPS.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

As mentioned previously, in addition to the monitor above I'll also be using an LG CX48 TV as my primary monitor.

I'm using this RGB/Fan Controller, but couldn't seem to find it on pcpartpicker: https://www.newegg.com/nzxt-ac-2rgbc-b1-black/p/N82E16811997157?Item=N82E16811997157

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I'm hoping to confirm that I've got everything I need (or order whatever is missing so that it arrives by Monday), and I'm also looking for any tips, tricks, common errors, or general advice you might give someone who hasn't built a new computer in a decade. Thanks so much for any help you all can offer.

    Cheers!

    Evidence of bad mother board?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 01:52 PM PDT

    Specs:

mobo: MSI Z590 PRO WIFI LGA 1200

cpu: Intel Core i9-10850K Comet Lake 10-Core 3.6 GHz

    ram: Team T-FORCE VULCAN Z 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200

    hdd: Intel 660p Series M.2 2280 2TB PCIe NVMe 3.0 x4 3D2, QLC Internal Solid State Drive

    power supply:EVGA SuperNOVA 650 GA, 80 Plus Gold 650W

    GPU: None (onboard graphics)

    A) A few times on reboot, it has "browned out". E.g. it turns on, graphics display for a split second, then fans shut down and nothing happens. Once in this state, even on reboots you cannot get out of the "brown out". In order to get it to boot, I must pull out the power cord and plug it back in. This is symptom of an issue with either the power supply or the motherboard, right?

    B) I was trying to install fedora. On boot from usb I get the following message:

[ 0.227974] mce: [Hardware Error]: Machine check events logged

    [ 0.227979] mce: [Hardware Error]: CPU 0: Machine Check: 0 Bank 6: ee20000000

    [ 0.227983] mce: [Hardware Error]: TSC 0 ADDR fef20300 MISC 3880000086

    [ 0.227991] mce: [Hardware Error]: PROCESSOR 0:a0655 TIME 1615408240 SOCKET 0 APIC 0 microcode e2

This is not OS specific as similar messages occur with ubuntu usb.

    C) There are strange messages about being unable to access usb and wifi. Perhaps this is just due to a lack of drivers

    D) Ubuntu gets into a loop attempting access usb devices.

    E) I have run memtest -- thus far no errors. I have also tried to booting off one stick (tried each stick separately). This didn't solve the issue.

Is this symptomatic of an issue with the motherboard? CPU? Is there a secret setting in the MSI bios that makes it work? Is this because my PS is inadequate or that I dont have a plug for cpu pwr 2? (I doubt it)

How to choose a compatable motherboard/fan for a build? And how do I interpret GPU compatability?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 01:52 PM PDT

    PCPartPicker

I threw this together last night to try to guage how much a high-end machine would cost me. Perhaps I just don't understand how PC Part Picker works, but even though it says it is filtering based on compatability I tried several motherboards and they all had compatability issues listed after selecting them, mostly with the CPU fan. I have no idea how to choose a CPU fan or a motherboard, so its possible I have just chosen poorly. What do I need to do in order to avoid buying extra adapters?

I also don't plan to buy my GPU from scalpers no matter how long I have to wait, so I figure I will put my current GTX 660 in this new build and just wait for prices to settle. I tried a GTX 660 on PCPartPicker and it didn't bring up any new compatability issues - would there be any problems with this scheme? It is honestly a little surprising to me that the same motherboard would have compatability with such an old card from a different manufacturer.

Also, any other comments on my setup would be appreciated. Besides the CPU, most of these are just chosen at random. And for the GPU I don't want NVIDIA because linux but other than that I don't know how what different Radeon chips do differently either - I just chose a higher-end card whose MSRP fit in my budget.

I'm mostly doing computer programming with gaming as a secondary focus, which is why I'm more interested in a good CPU.

Best wireless headset/headphone for gaming? (microphone and price are irrelevant)

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 07:52 AM PDT

Hey i was just sondering about what you think the best wireless headset is without a mic? if the money goes towards better sound instead) I've got a blue yeti X microphone

Because I've heard the best is Steelseries Arctic pro wireless, HyperX cloud 2 wireless, Astro A50, Bose QuietComfort 35 2, Logitech PRO X Wireless and Audeze Penrose X. What is your thoughts? Did I miss something better? I know they are with a mic btw, buts it's irrelevant, I'm trying to find the best sound quality.

I've searched a ton ,and compared a ton, but wanted to know if I've missed something.

Replacing only the fan on the Deepcool Gammaxx C40

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 01:49 PM PDT

Hi can I replace the fan on this Gammaxx C40?

The fan is way too loud for me.

I thought a bequiet pure wings 2 should be fine?

Is this that a problem since this is a case fan?

I would just plug it in the case fan pins on the motherboard.

    Thanks!

Remember, your trash could be someone's treasure

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 07:05 PM PDT

Hey! I'm directing this post to you, yes you. Because if you're browsing this subreddit it probably means that you're either looking to buy a new PC (and possibly will be getting rid of your old hardware) or you're a tech savvy person who might have some old parts laying around with no purpose.

If that is so, then I'd like for you to listen for a bit. In my country the schools have been closed for more than a year at this point because of COVID. I suppose it could be similar in your place. While owning a PC or a laptop may be something obvious to us, there are a lot of kids that do not actually have any means of studying remotely. This means that there is/was a need for special charity organizations to be founded that specialise in servicing old hardware and deliver it to those in need.

I myself joined such organisations lately. People donate lots of different laptops, parts, computers, monitors. And it means a lot! Sometimes we have to actually sell the donated and serviced hardware in order to buy new SSDs for the laptops, but nothing goes to waste.

So if you have (or will have) some parts that you wouldn't mind donating, please take few minutes of your time in order to find a local charity of this kind and let them know that you can help.

If you can volunteer and donate your skills in repairing PCs instead then that's priceless as well so keep that in mind.

That being said. Have a good day, vaccinate as soon as you can (IF you can) and cheers!
