$800 PC I built 10 months ago. The world changed.

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 07:48 PM PDT

I did some deal hunting back then, so I got things a little cheaper than MSRP.

    ------------------------------------------

    $126.78 | Ryzen 5 3600

    $322.18 | MSI Gaming X Rx 5700 XT

    $26.03 | Netac 500 GB NVMe M.2

    $90.30 | Motherboard + Extraneous Add-ons

    $76.29 | Case + ARGB Fans

    $46.06 | EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G+

    $60.55 | 2 x 8GB RAM Adata XPG Z1

    $63.74 | Scythe Fuma 2 CPU Cooler

    -------------------------------------------

    $811.93 | Total

The prices including all shipping and taxes.

If I just stick with a stock CPU cooler and buy a lower-tier motherboard, the whole build would be around $700.

The world went crazy. Probably I am going to give up on the RTX 3000 series.

Friends telling me to go with a pre-built PC because of GPUs

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 06:30 AM PDT

I mainly play Path of Exile and WoW Classic, so I don't need anything massive. I would like to be able to have both games open on a monitor at the same time and run smoothly. My literate PC hardware friends are telling me to stick with a pre-built because it is so hard to get GPUs right now.

I am just looking to see if this sound advice, or does it only pertain to the high end stuff? And if pre-built is the way to go, then is there a subreddit for good deals?

    Is it worth paying 350$ extra for a RTX 3070 8gb vs a RTX 3060 12gb?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 09:06 AM PDT

    Title

The build I'm making right now has a budget motherboard(ASRock B460M Pro AC) and intel i5 (10400F), which is decent for my build, but would a RTX 3070 be bottlenecked? I purposely chose the core i5 and B460M because I plan on upgrading the CPU in a few months, and the i5 is good enough that I can use it in a second smaller build.

My three main questions are this:

    Is 350$ usd a reasonable difference between a RTX 3060 12gb vs RTX 3070 8gb (the 3060 is 700$ usd & the 3070 is 1050$ usd)

Will the 3070 be bottlenecked by my CPU, and if so, is it worth experiencing bottlenecks for a few months until I upgrade my motherboard + CPU?

Should paying 350$ usd extra for a 3070 instead of a 3060 make a noticable difference in gaming and streaming*?

*Streaming while doing heavy tasks such as game development as I like to stream the process of game design

EDIT: I know this is more then I should be paying, but because of the GPU market right now these are the cheapest prices I can get

PC won’t give any signs of like with working PSU because of empty CMOS battery

    Posted: 21 Apr 2021 03:41 PM PDT

So I own a small business which helps building computers and a client asked me to move his old hardware from an old case to a new case.

The PC was kinda sketchy with a PSU of an unknown brand and I was already suspicious about the PC even working.

The first trouble I ran into was the CPU cable from the PSU. It used to be top mounted and thus wasn't long enough for bottom mounting. But when the extension came in the mail the PC would not give any sign of life.

I went through all the steps to check what could be wrong with the PSU, like using a known working one and stuff but with no luck. I was already scared that the PSU had given up and just stopped working because it didn't seem very reliable. I also didn't want to plug the cheap PSU into my PC and i do not have any other PC in stock.

With some google searching I found that the CMOS battery can cause issues with the computer powering on. So i changed it for a new one and sure enough it powered straight on! I thought I might share it so other people won't have to spend an hour troubleshooting.

TL:DR If an older PC doesn't turn try to replace the CMOS battery

    2080ti 1440p. 30 series not necessary?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 12:01 PM PDT

I got a 2080ti a few months before the launch of the 30series and I (looking back now) feel really great about it considering the ongoing PC component shortage. Initially I was eager to save up and upgrade to a 30series.

As time has gone on I have realized that the 2080ti is pretty god damn powerful. Especially at 1440p. I am curious to know how long that will be the case.

How many years before new games make the 2080ti sub par at 1440p? Is there a reason for me to upgrade at all? Am I crazy for feeling like I am not missing out on anything substantial by not getting a 30 series?

Note: Posted this in r/pcmasterrace but doesn't seem to be getting any real feedback.

Geforce 1070 Displayport does not work on boot

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 09:32 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I've built my first PC recently, and I'm experiencing a curious issue that I am not sure how to approach and did not get much answers from Google either.

Relevant parts: ASUS PRIME X570-PRO, ZOTAC GeForce® GTX 1070 AMP Edition (3x DP ports, 1x HDMI)

The problem as follows - when I have a display plugged into a DisplayPort connection (either one of the three), I get no signal in my displays and my motherboard displays a white light, indicating a VGA issue as well.

    Workarounds I found:

    • Plugging the DP out and back in solves the problem (light on the MB stays on though)
    • Using HDMI port instead

At first I just used the HDMI port and not bothered with it, but now I got a second display, I keep one of them plugged via DP and another one via HDMI, however if the DP is plugged in on boot, BOTH monitors get no signal.

So now my bootup routine involves starting the PC, forgetting I had both monitors plugged in, unplugging a DP port, rebooting PC, and plugging the DP again when windows boots up.

Has anyone encountered this or got an idea of the approach I could take to troubleshoot further?

    Vertical GPU mount ruined GPU

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 01:34 PM PDT

I tried to install a Vertical GPU mount on my build. It wasn't displaying anything after connecting everything. I tried both PCIe slots and still nothing. So I decided to cut my losses and remove it, tried to reinstall the GPU directly like it was connected before but it doesn't show up up anymore that way either.

I tested the GPU on another motherboard and with different displays and cables, still nothing. I have come to terms it is no longer functional.

My few questions are: Can I get it repaired? (I don't SEE any damage)

Can I contact Phanteks regarding the damage to GPU?

Can I contact ASRock and maybe they can help me repair or replace the piece?

All pieces were bought from NewEgg.

    Any advice is appreciated.

Speakers detected but no audio / headphones not detected!

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 12:01 PM PDT

It's a 5yo PC i built, i used an external usb audio card for audio, but now i gave the PC to another person, switched drives and used new windows install, the audio jacks just don't work. Speakers ( motherboard jack ) get detected ( Realtek ), but get no audio what so ever, i get no errors in the drivers manager thing. Headphones ( front jack ) don't get detected at all. Yes, the cable is plugged in HD audio thing, set to HD in bios. Unplugged and plugged back in to make sure, 100% sure it's HD audio cable. Installed the driver from the Asus motherboard's page. Tried from other sources. Nothing.

I didn't remove the CPU for at least 2 years, maybe 3. So i don't think it's a CPU pin, although i must say i didn't use the jacks for a long time. Also the case is new, so the front jack should work.

I tried pretty much everything i've found in the Internet with no avail, i'm so tired.

I tried to boot a live usb Linux but for some damn reason it doesn't boot on that PC, but does on my currect PC. Tried both UEFI mode and not. WTF

Please i know how to use a PC, don't tell me basic stuff like "set as default device" or "use microsoft troubleshooting".

    plz halp 😭

Scared of high temps on a single fan GPU

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 07:15 AM PDT

Hello, I just bought an ASUS PHOENIX GTX 1660 SUPER (which is an ITX GPU with one single fan) and I read online later it has a bad cooling system, causing the GPU to reach insane temps like 83-87 degrees. I was wondering if I made the right choice now, because I really don't like throttling...

I bought new fans for the front of the case (which is a mid-tower case) also (so I will have 5 in total plus the one of the CPU) hoping it will be enough, and room temperature currently is around 18 degrees also.

    What do you think?

    Good Motherboards for a i7 10700k?

Built my PC, are my temps optimal?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 01:55 PM PDT

So I've just upgraded everything in my rig, except my gtx 1060 since I can't find a decently priced GPU.

In regards to cooling, my case is an h210 with 2 front 120mm intake fans, 1 120mm back exhaust fan, and a noctua nh-u12s for the CPU, BUT, its fan is set in exhaust mode to the back of the cooler since there isn't enough clearance from the RAM to have it as an intake fan. I also don't have clearance for a top exhaust fan either.

The rest of the specs are shown below along with the temps, but the main question I have, is if these temperatures are expected. The image was taken during a 2-hour long, non-stop warzone session at 1080p, with graphics set to normal/low.

    Thanks for any advice.

Launching my build. Screw It. I'm doing it.

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 12:20 PM PDT

I've put off building my own PC for literal years, it always felt like an irresponsible use of money for something I always wanted to build, literally maybe 10 years. I've dreamt and fantasized about parts and experimented with builds for that entire time. Through it all, I've finally hit the point where I'm tired of waiting and pushing it off, even with the current GPU shortage.

I've comprised my build here: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GhBV9N

I'd like some opinions on anything that may be better or more affordable, granted the GPU is only priced as such because of the shortage.

Thank you all for looking, appreciate any help you can give me.

UPDATE: New list per everyone's recommendations is here: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/tF96bh

    3rd ssd

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 01:36 PM PDT

Quick question, I have 2 1 tb SSDs. Should I get a 3rd- 250 gb ssd to use for windows only? Would this do anything to help increase the speeds of my other drives, or be useless. Is it worth it?

    Help for upgrade pc

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 12:23 PM PDT

    Hello guys,

i would like to upgrade my pc.

    I have an i7 6700k with a rtx 2060 super and 16gb ram.

which is better today to run games like warzone at 120 + fps? AMD or Intel?

i was thinking about the i7 10700k what do you think?

Which AMD processor like the 10700k recommend?

Which motherboard to use with the processor?

Which aircoolers (I'm not a fan of watercoolers)?

In the future I intend to change the video card, so I thought about a processor like the 10700k

    Thank you for your help

At what point do you need to have multiple graphics cards?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 02:20 PM PDT

I currently run a GTX 2070 Super for my primary 1080p @ 144hz monitor and a GTX 670 to run 2 x 1080p @ 60hz + 4k TV @ 60hz. I would really like to make a small form factor build (hopefully with a better GPU in the future) but I'm worried that a single card is not going to be enough to correctly run all my pixels and still maintain the highest performance for games on my primary monitor.

Not only would the single card have to drive the peripheral monitors pixels, but they would also be at very different refresh rates. Does anybody have any experience or advice on this?

Note: Ideally this would be 5950x CPU, so no option for integrated graphics.

Adding extra fans to the top of my case

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 11:59 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding the airflow in my case. My case is the Corsair iCUE 4000X, I have three intake fans at the front and one exhaust fan at the back. My question is if my system would benefit from using two extra exhaust fans (so three in total) mounted at the top of my case. Or would that disrupt the airflow in some way?

I'm asking this because it feels like the airflow in my case is currently a bit unbalanced since I'm using three intake fans but only one exhaust fan..

I might be overthinking (bad habit) but I'm curious about your opinions on this!

    Thanks in advance!

Can't install Arctic Alpine 12 CPU cooler properly

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 02:03 PM PDT

i'm trying to move my rig to a smaller case, but i've run into a problem i don't know the solution to.

i have a z390 i pro wifi motherboard and an arctic alpine 12 co cpu cooler. everything looks like it should fit, but no matter what i do i can't get all the cooler's pins to snap in properly.

i can get any two pins on one side to snap in, but the other two pins never do. i'm really concerned that putting too much pressure trying to get this to work will damage something--honestly i'm worried i already have.

what can i do about this? am i doing something wrong? is there a risk of damage if i try to push too hard on the motherboard/cpu socket?

(Slightly noob question) What is the benefit of using RAID?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 02:01 PM PDT

I built my first PC back in November without difficulty but now I'm interested in adjusting my settings for performance and dont want to screw anything up. I see in my BIOS the storage options RAID and AHCI, just wondered which is better for performance? I'm running an MSI B550 Tomahawk/Ryzen 7 3800/16gb G.Skill Trident Z DDR4 RAM with a Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB NVM-E M2 SSD, WD Blue 1TB external SSD, and a Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD. My graphics card is an MSI Radeon RX 5600 XT Gaming MX, not that I expect that would be impacted by storage options... I could also use some tips on RAM overclocking.

    Does it worth it?

    Posted: 22 Apr 2021 01:43 PM PDT

Hello everyone! So my question is, does it worth it to buy a faulty rtx 2060, and try to fix it at home? I've found a faulty rtx 2060 for approx. 200 eur, and the problem with the card is that it's not giving signal. I really want an rtx card, and if it's easy to fix, then it might be a good deal. How big can the issue be? As I mentioned it earlier, it's only problem that it's not giving signal, but the fans start spinning, and the light lights up on it as well. Sorry if it's a stupid question, or it's not the good subreddit, but I don't have anyone that I can ask this from. Thanks!
