2021 system upgrade feat. 5900X and 3090 FE with liquid cooling

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 05:59 AM PDT

    Hello there, /r/buildapc.

Last weekend I finally finished putting my system on water again. The GPU block was the last part to arrive. I've had the CPU and GPU since Nov and late Oct, respectively, and on air since then. The graphics card's stock heatsink required me to remove the custom loop parts I've had in the system - there's just no way of fitting a tube reservoir-pump combo in the front of this case with a 313 mm long graphics card.

Here are some photos of the system: https://imgur.com/a/NjcWxSp

A lot of the hardware is carried over from older iterations of my system. The case and memory are both from 2017, the original version of "my own" system that wasn't just a hand-me-down from family. The HDD has been in use since 2013.

Here's a list of watercooling stuff in case anyone is interested:

    • Watercool Heatkiller IV for the CPU
    • EK Special Edition block for the 3090 FE
    • Watercool Heatkiller Tube with D5 Vario pump-res unit
    • Hardware Labs GTS 240 and 360
    • Corsair ML120 PRO Whites
    • various EKWB and Barrow fittings along with an Aquacomputer inline temp sensor for coolant temperature measurement; fan control via motherboard and inline temp sensor
    • EK ZMT EPDM tubing, 10/16 internal, 13/19 external
    • external rad: Watercool MO-RA3 420 with Bequiet Silent Wings 3s, a D5 Vario with Watercool top, an Aquacomputer Quadro and a plug-type temperature probe, along with a spare power supply
    • Koolance QD4s and an external bypass to be able to detach the external rad

I've done a good amount of minor stuff here and there that would, perhaps, constitute "modding":

    • I made my own 24- and 12-pin cables (see here: https://imgur.com/a/rhOECj8). Combs are custom drawn up by me and drawings sent off to be laser cut from stainless steel. A PSU swap from an EVGA G3 to this Corsair RM850x meant that I couldn't use the 24-pin I had already made the motherboard-end for - double wires are laid out differently for this PSU. I might get around to make a new one for the next maintenance cycle, but, as it stands, it's not bugging me a whole lot.
    • I sleeved both of the pumps' wires and sanded off the reservoir's inlet and outlet markings. https://imgur.com/a/bJzFA3X
    • I replaced the thermal pad on the motherboard's chipset with paste. https://imgur.com/a/RLEKXIi
    • Rather than go with an off-the-shelf PCIE bracket passthrough, I cut a couple of holes into the case for bulkheads and connecting the external rad. This technically didn't happen for this iteration of the system, but eh. https://imgur.com/a/S2IfMU1

That's about all I have for now. See you in 2022 for the next iteration of this monstrosity.

Pc works fine without GPU but powers off when inserted

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 03:16 AM PDT

THIS TITLE DOES NOT REFER TO CURRENT ISSUE ANYMORE, REFER TO EDIT 3

Whenever I unplug the GPU from the pci slot, the pc manages to boot up fine aside from the lack of visuals. The pc had been working fine up until now, I built it in January. I've already tried resetting the cmos battery but it still leads to the same result. I don't know what else to do really aside from replacing the GPU which I don't have the money for.

    Card in question: https://www.zotac.com/au/product/graphics_card/zotac-gaming-geforce-gtx-1650-oc-gddr6#awards

Edit: Alright so I believe the issue has changed, the pc boots up and works for at least 10 - 30 mins before it crashes again with the gpu. Thanks for any suggestions on what I could do.

Edit 2: I don't know if it will help but the type of crash I get is a hard crash where I can't turn the pc on again unless I turn the PSU off and on again

Edit 3: I believe I managed to fix it, I took out the PSU and noticed one of the cables were loose so I plugged that in. I would try to boot into windows but I believe it's corrupted now so that's fun.

Edit 4: Windows is working, will leave pc running for at least another hour to see if it happens again.

Final Edit: PC has been working fine for a good while now, this issue is solved. Thanks for all the help.

Just built my first ever PC all on my own and it was so easy if you aren't worried or afraid of it. My covid battlestation! Built to last

Some pics! I made sure to show my cable management lol. Cable management started out as being the hardest part but ended up being really fun and easy! Just take it one cord at a time and don't get stressed!

My first ever custom PC I paid one of my friends to build for me because I was so worried I would mess something up and break a component, I really regretted missing out on that building experience. So when I decided to upgrade to a new rig I was dead set on building it myself this time. I watched so many YouTube videos on how to build a computer that I felt that I could do it for my job by the time I built my new pc, lol. Once you get over being worried and are just excited about the pc building it becomes so fun! Don't be afraid of it!

    Here are the specs, btw:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GNjB68

It's Intel as their K-sku CPUs are simply fun to own and to see how hard you can push them and I've always used Intel so there's brand recognition and comfort there. I was thinking about getting a Ryzen 5 5600X but they ended up being impossible to find in stock for a decent price. Plus, the cpu I got seems to benchmark extremely similar to it with, I assume, better overclocks.

I got lucky and managed to get a decent GPU for a reasonable price before everything started spiking. The same RX 480 I got is now selling on eBay for ~300 dollars. I'm not super into AAA gaming, I mainly play retro or emulation stuff so this card is perfect for me for now. I do like Warzone and other stuff that's intensive but the RX 480 is still totally fine for 1080p gaming when backed by a good processor. I'm hoping to wait out this GPU drought, slap an RTX 3080 in here and use this build for the next 5 years.

Thanks for reading. I didn't mean to write this much but I'm still excited, lol.

Windows 10 license for new motherboard

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 06:24 AM PDT

I just built my new PC with new case, motherboard, cpu, ram and ssd. I created a usb installer for windows using the old PC and installed a fresh windows onto the new ssd. I have my old hard drive in the new computer and I can boot into the old windows install and the new windows install on the same new PC.

Now windows is saying that both copies of windows are not activated because the hardware has changed. It also tells me I can activate windows by logging into my windows account but the problem is that I didn't use my windows account on the old pc so the license is not linked there.

My question is, can I just reassemble the old pc with the old hard drive to link the key to my windows account and then use that windows account on the new pc to retrieve my active copy?

Is ryzen 5 4650G worth buying right now?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 09:02 AM PDT

    Hello everybody,

I would like to ask if it's worth buying ryzen pro 4650G because of the GPU shortage. The price difference in my country between 3600 and 4650G is 30USD. My plan is to buy an iGPU and wait till GPUs will be again available. The reason why I want to buy a PC right now is the low price of other components. PC will be used for gaming / office stuff.

    Thanks a lot

ASUS prime x-570 pro motherboard can’t be updated

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 11:03 AM PDT

Hey, i'm trying to update my bios to support my 5900x, however, my motherboard doesn't have flashback, and so I bought an athlon cpu to update it, however, the bios update on asus' website for my motherboard (the motherboard without it flashback) contains a CAP file ( which to my knowledge is used in bios flashback with a USB drive) which I can't run on windows, what do I do?

    what am I doing wrong?

edit: more effort than it's worth to do the free cpu from AMD when i can just buy one and return it

Integrated Graphics Card For My First PC Build

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 05:17 AM PDT

The gpu shortage has made it nearly impossible to buy a gpu at a reasonable price. So I turned my sights towards an integrated gpu.

Performance wise, how good are they? I'm not looking to play the newest AAA games on maximum setting (I just wanna play ULTRAKILL lol). Basically are they worth it, will I be able to upgrade to another gpu when the market cools down, and how do I know which integrated gpu hits the specs of certain games?

Somehow, even in the current PC parts market I managed to score a GTX 1060 3GB for less than 90 dollars UNUSED.

    Posted: 16 Apr 2021 06:06 PM PDT

    GTX 1060

Bought from a friend who couldn't use it for his own build due to different GPU. He bought it from a guy who had a spare 1060 unused. Kept in his care for 2 years and finally he sold it to me after realizing he'll never use it since he already has another. It's in great condition and since it's unused it'll last me a while. It's all I'm gonna need for now since I'll be gaming at 1080p. He even gave me free 2400mhz ram and free fans (all unused). Most of the parts were going to his build but he didn't use them. Proud of myself

I was told maybe it's not getting enough power but after putting in a 1200w from 850w no difference. All individual cables no daisy chaining. Nvidia control panel set, gsync off, temps stay below 75C, not over clocked, in the pcie x16 slot, I'm at a complete loss.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Built my computer around 1 year ago, and it randomly started shutting off a couple weeks ago. The shut down is instant, as in the screen goes black and the case fans turn off, but interestingly the power and Ethernet LEDs on the motherboard stay lit. Pushing the power button does nothing, the PSU has to be cycled for it to turn back on. Timing between shutdowns varies, it has gone from a few days between shutdowns to a few minutes. Once it happens then it will shut down at a higher rate until it sits for a while (overnight). Just after a shutdown, if i cycle the PSU and hit the power button then the fans will twitch but stay off. I have to give it some time before it will turn back on.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

    • I have replaced the PSU as it seems obviously power related but it did not resolve.
    • Replaced the motherboard and CPU with new ones (used to be a Ryzen 2600X). Still occuring
    • Ran windows memory test, passed. Ram failure does not typically look like this.
    • I changed from a power strip to plugging straight into the wall, but as the power LED stays on I dont think thats the issue. No other devices in the house have any issues.
    • Issue also happens if I am in the BIOS, so it should not be software related.
    • Issue happens with / without video card installed.
    • The only constant I know of is that if I run Prime95 for ~20 minutes I can get it to shut down. This points to thermal fuse or something but it's a new PSU. The old PSU had the exact same issue, I can't believe I could get two PSUs with the exact same issue so I feel it lies elsewhere.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

https://imgur.com/a/n4u4gOG Photo / video of fans twitching and refusing to turn on until it sits for a bit.

Help with an RTX 3080 build

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 11:56 AM PDT

    Hey,

I'm planning to build a new PC, my current one is around 6 years old and running a GTX 770. The new one will mostly be used for 1440p 165Hz gaming as you can see by the monitor choices below.

I have a couple of concerns about the parts: 1. Is the ryzen 7 an overkill?

As far as I know most people recommend ryzen 5 for gaming, however sometimes I have a bunch of chrome tabs and a couple of programs like visual studio or sublime open in the background.

    1. Will the case be large enough?

I would like decent cooling and I figured Noctua would be best, but the case would be quite cramped. I found these 2 builds on PCPartPicker and everything seems to fit, but I'm still worried the crammed space will affect cooling. Build 1, Build 2

    1. The RAM clearance is a bit tight.

Noctua lists that the maximum RAM height without moving the fans is 32mm, the RAM I choose is 31mm high. I don't have a lot of room for moving the fans, so I would like to know if this is ok.

Case fans making annoying buzzing sound when running at certain speeds

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 11:06 AM PDT

    video

Edit: I actually loosened the screws to the point where the case fans are no longer directly touching the radiator, and it appears to have reduced the noise. Looks like the rubber pads just weren't doing their job, so maybe I'll have to get some rubber washers or something.

My 3 Cooler Master MF120R case fans are attached to a 360mm radiator mounted to the top of my Lian Li O11 Dynamic case, and when running at around 50-70% speed they emit this annoying buzzing sound. Tightening and loosening the screws didn't seem to have any effect on the noise. Also made sure no cables were touching them. What could be causing this?

Recommendation on a 27' monitor for a designer?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 12:40 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I recently got myself a nice PC capable of gaming (not amazingly due to GPU constraints) and graphic design stuff.

    The specs are:

    - Ryzen 5 5600X

    - 1050ti (Horrific I know)

    - 32GB CORSAIR VENGEANCE LPX 3600MHz

    - Corsair CX750 850W

I'll primarily be using it for the Adobe CC and gaming on the off.

I'm quite confused about which monitors to pick but my budget is in the region of £150 - £250. I was hoping for something at 27'' maybe 75hz (Not sure 144hz matters atm since I'm not intensely gaming) and quite like the thin bezel like design.

    Any recommendation would help greatly!!

A PC for gaming, streaming and recording at the same time (and sometimes only streaming and recording)

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 10:49 AM PDT

    Hello everybody :-)

I'm looking into building a new PC, with a specific purpose. I already tried quite a long time to find our what I need, but I couldn't find it anywhere. I want the pc to be able to play Strategy games (Total War, Paradox games etc,) while also streaming AND recording. I did find some stuff about gaming and streaming or gaming and recording, but never all three combined...

As for quality, I want to do this at at least 1080p, 60 fps, SDR. (All three) My highest aim would be 4k, 60 fps, HDR.

I would use it to catch footage from consoles as well with a capture card (since I prefer action-y games on a controler, I would still go for those games on a console). I'm already doing this with a nice laptop I bought 1,5 years ago, but it has some downsides I wasn't prepared for (I can't record HDR without frameskipping for example, and the quality of colours is at the lowest setting, since anything else will start the frameskipping...). I'm even splitting the streaming and recording workload between CPU- (Stream/Intel chip) and GPU-codec (Recording/1660 ti Nvidia for laptops), otherwise even that would be impossible.

Is it possible to build such a machine? Or am I aiming to high? What would I need? I hope you guys here can help me, or maybe point me into a direction where someone can tell me :-)

If it is not possible, would it be possible to build one that can stream AND record at the same time, with the goals I wrote before? If so, what do I need?

Thanks for your time in any case :-)

Monitor not going up to 75hz with correct hardware

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 12:14 PM PDT

So I have this monitor (ASUS VW228N) hooked up to my GTX 1060 and it should be able to do 1920x1080@75 in theory as I did manage that on an older pc with the same monitor and a VGA cable. So I just got this DVI-D Dual Link cable except it wont go above 66 hertz on Full HD. How do I solve?

HELP! ROG X570-F with Ryzen 5600x not bootig, MOBO LED stuck on DRAM Yellow, no monitor signal

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 05:27 AM PDT

I built my first PC last December. It was running smoothly til last February when suddenly the Aura Sync stopped recognizing my components (Motherboard, Ram, and Fans) and like 3 of my USB slots in the IO and the USB Case also stopped working. my SATA SSD wasnt also recognized and had errors. Armoury crate also wasnt recognizing anything. It was during the time the usb issues with the Ryzen 5000 series and 500 motherboards came about. So i thought it was that. AMD said theyd release a fix by april so I kept checking.

I recently updated my Bios to Version 3603 (March 3 2021). But then last night as I was playing a game windows suddenly lagged. Like the game stuttering as well. I also noticed the Internet LAN suddenly lost its connection.(I still had internet from wireless) So i tried plugging in and out. It still didnt recognize it.So i tried powering off my PC by pressing the Power off button. When i tried to open it again there is no signal going to the monitor. The motherboard is stuck with the DRAM yellow light and the IO seems not powering my Keyboard and mouse. The motherboards and chassis Fans run and their and the RAM'S RGB is on whenever i open it. But it doesnt boot and just stuck on the yellow DRAM Light.

Ive tried disassembling it by removing the RAM, CPU GPU and all. Even tried Flashing the BIOS to the latest beta version and even to the original Bios version. Theres no signal in both the GPU and IO HDMI out.

    Here is my specs

    • Cooler Master TD500 Mesh White
    • AMD RYZEN 5 5600X
    • Asus ROG Strix X570-F
    • Gigabyte RTX 3060Ti Gaming Pro OC
    • G Skill Trident Z RGB 16gb (8x2)
    • Seasonic Prime Ultra 850W 80Plus Titanium
    • WD BLUE SN550 1TB
    • Samsung EVO 890 QVO 1TB -TP Link TX3000E AX3000 WiFi 6 PCIE

Hope anyone can help on this! Thanks

Is gpu in my new laptop dead?

    Posted: 17 Apr 2021 08:00 AM PDT

Bought a G17 2021 edition last week, everything ran great, suddenly GPU (3070) no longer works. I tried everything for 5 hours, nothing reasonable works, new drivers, old drivers, clearing old then new, clearing everything nvidia related with programs then old and new drivers, reinstalling windows completly. Always code 43 on the card. It is recognised but can not work. When updating drivers to any outside of safe mode it freezes entire laptop during instalation, or turns screen completly black forever and i need to reset the laptop with a button hold. I cant open it up and reseat gpu as it will void the warranty. Anything else i can try prior to rma?
