This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    The Teenagers Birthday Build Completed

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 03:53 AM PST

16yo daughter wanted a PC to replace her 4yo laptop which wasn't really cutting it any more for all the games she wanted to play. So joint Nov birthday/xmas present PC

Criteria was a machine that could play the games she plays now decently at 1080p (mostly lots of esports stuff it seems like Rainbow Siege, Minecraft, who knows what else, I can't keep up :-) ) , cope with some more demanding stuff and with scope for upgrading. that would hopefully last say at least 5 years before the underlying performance limits start to bite

Also looking cool and with a good dose of RGB of course.

Of course this autumn was not a good time to be planning this, so some compromises were made due to price and availability. E.G. the GPU. but also got some decent prices on some things as well. But we are happy with the build.

She did most of the build herself (helped me last year with one) with occasional help and guidance from me. Not quite happy with the Phanteks Neon RGB strip, as had issues with the fixing and it needs redoing. And whilst not an RGB fan really myself, I do think it looks pretty sleek, the white sleeved extensions really make a difference/. The fans are a little on the noisy side for me, but she doesn't care as has a headset on most of the time.

She bought a Razer keyboard and Logitech mouse to go with it. Using a decent (Dell Ultrasharp) but standard 24 inch monitor. This will probably get upgraded at some future date, but it's way better than her laptop screen :-)

M.2 SSD - Worth it or not? And why?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 01:32 PM PST

Hey y'all! I built my dad a new PC yesterday and I thought about buying him some M.2 SSD since his motherboard got a slot for it. I didn't even know that, but that's dope.

So, for anyone wondering, he's got i3 10100f, 16gb @ 2666mhz, gtx960 (gpu is getting replaced in couple of weeks, but yeah).

He DOESN'T GAME on his PC, he uses it for browsing on it, watching movies, using photoshop/illustrator or any other program, does his work on it, and stuff like that. He basically does a lot of things but no gaming on it.

So I just wanted to ask you guys here who have M.2 SSD's to tell me is it worth getting it? He already has 240 SSD but if it's gonna speed things up, I'll get him one, just wanted to see is it worth it?

    Gaming PC build for dinosaurs

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 12:25 PM PST

    Hello,

I am planning on building a new PC and I have no idea where to start. I haven't had a gaming PC in 15 years so I'm a dinosaur when it comes to new tech.

The games that I want to play are racing and flying sims such as iracing,Dirt Rally 2.0 and Microsoft Flight SIM 2020 What would be a good price point for a build? I'm not the type of person who wants to be constantly upgrading within 2-3 years. I was figuring $1500 - $2000. Is that too high, I'm not a hardcore gamer like I use to be but I do want seamless graphics and frame rate.

I've tried sites such as PC Picker and other sources to figure out a price point. I basically want a solid PC build that can handle whatever is thrown at it.

Question abt WiFi adapters/connecting the pc to wifi

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 11:16 AM PST

So I was watching YouTube videos abt this but i still have some questions. So I'm pretty sure my mother board doesnt have wifi/Bluetooth stuff, would using a wifi adapter work/let me use wifi on it? if just using an adapter would work, do I just plug it into my pc or something? Sorry this is kinda dumb Im still trying to learn abt pcs.

These are my two pc part picker lists, they both have different motherboards but I'm pretty sure neither of them has wifi. also if you have any suggestions for the lists lmk

I'm looking for some rgb fans that are at least decently quiet and aren't overpriced. (~$30) If there's any you recommend, please tell me. Thank you!

How much difference does a faster ssd make?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 05:43 AM PST

Bought a gaming PC that, oddly, has a mid tier sata ssd, maxing around 400MB/sec. the rest of the machine is pretty bomb for what I paid. 2080, i7 9770k.. you get the picture.

I'm planning to update the ssd to a 1TB Samsung 970 eco plus. Will I actually see much improvement? I guess it might be harder to judge as I already play everything on max. Apex, doom eternal, csgo, warzone

GTX 1080 ti - I have 4k 34" curved for slow games/movies/browsing. Can 1080ti handle adding 1440p 144/165 hz monitor (dell S2721DGF) for fast games? Trying to add a lower latency screen to use alongside the 4k.

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 09:28 AM PST

I have a 1080 ti and a 4k 34" acer predator. I have been playing all games on the 4k, but am looking for a lower latency screen for FPS fast-paced games. I'm wondering if I am wasting money picking up a Dell S2721DGF for 1440p 165 hz gameplay with the 4k monitor alongside. I would still like to use the 4k for movies, browsing, slow games, while swapping to the 2k screen for the fast games. Can my 1080 ti handle that setup? I don't know much about how the resources are divvied up and whether it even matters if I'm only using 1 screen at a time for the actual game.

I'm open to other suggestions for how to implement a 2nd low latency monitor including a different monitor or upgrading video cards. I do prefer the low latency IPS vs TN to maintain some better quality. I don't need competition level latency - just the best I can get with whats available and reasonably priced.

Please save my 3080 before I RMA.

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 10:56 AM PST

Edit: thank everyone for the suggestions, u/notoriousraptor had the solution. Thank you guys.

I just built my dream PC and was fortunate enough to win the newegg refresh spam lottery for a 3080, but unfortunately may have got a DOA card, but I am willing to try ANYTHING to make sure, before I send it back and have to wait 2-4 weeks for a replacement.

Problem: MSI 3080 Ventus OC. Installed, power on, no bios screen, no input. Fans spin at a normal level and then after a minute they go to idle. Computer has a 3950x, Gigabyte B550i Aorus Pro AX, 32GB of 3600 MHZ DDR4, a 700W silverstone SFX all crammed (gently) into a Sliger SM580.

Things I have tried: Reseating the card and the PCIE connectors. Updating bios to latest version. 2 different HDMI cables into both the motherboard and the card itself (no integrated graphics. But im desperate, man.) and different HDMI ports on the monitor. A displayport cable, tried all slots. I installed my 1080 from my old computer to verify that none of the other parts were dead and everything functions fine, reinstalled the 3080 and just blank. But I've kept my hopes up because I've never seen a DOA card that would run up and idle? But maybe I'm just that unlucky.

This is my 4th PC and I've never been so frustrated in my life, especially considering trying endlessly for 3 months just to get one of these cards. I will try anything you guys have got, it's Sunday so it wouldn't do me any good to send it out today so ill try it all. Please help.

    PC doesnt post

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 09:32 AM PST

Hello guys. My PC doesnt post at all. Yesterday it did sometimes post, but it restarted either after putting my password in windows or half way through a game, and wouldn't boot after. When I use the display port on the 1060, for a fraction of a second you can see the "GTX 1060 6GB VGA (and all other information that always shows), but nothing after that). I tried a 960 and still didn't work, and the integrated gpu still doesnt work. I feel like it is a Motherboard problem as all 4 fans power up, and it's not the ssd/hdd/ram as it was tested too. Gpu support bracket

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 12:09 PM PST

I'm in the middle of building my pc and when installing the gpu, the support bracket doesn't align with the case bracket. The motherboard is lined up with the io shield. Is there anything else I could be missing?

What should I use my NVME drive for?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 12:01 PM PST

Hi guys, I bought a 1tb NVME SSD on Black Friday, and was wondering what I should use it for. I currently use a 512gb SATA III SSD, but that got filled up pretty quickly. I'm a bit confused on what a boot drive does vs a game drive. I was wondering if someone could help me out!

Hi everyone, so I've run into some issues with my newly built PC. I installed everything correctly last night and got a clean post to BIOS. Everything was looking good, CPU and RAM were looking good, enabled XMP without an issue, M2 drive was not being detected but I wasn't too concerned about that just yet, I just thought I'd test another m2 slot the next morning as it was getting late and do the windows installation the next morning. The SATA drive was being detected fine at this point as well.

Flash forward to this morning, I was prepping for windows 10 install via USB installation media. Key note, I only own a mac book so I followed this guide on how to create a bootable USB windows stick using a MAC. Plugged it into the system, booted it up, did not detect the boot drive automatically.

I thought no worries, I'll change the boot order and make the USB flashdrive as the first boot order. I soon started getting issues even getting the PC to post to BIOS. The monitor is connected via display port to my rtx 3070, and I was getting a "No DisplayPort Signal" message all of a sudden. Tried all the different ports, even HDMI - still nothing. I'm now not even able to get it to post, however when the PC is powered on the fans spin up, and stay spinning, the GPU LED lights are on, and all CPU fans are also spinning.

Here's what I've done so far as a process of elimination:

    • Tested the monitor with a roku stick and PS4, confirmed the monitor functions properly on other devices.

    • Tested another monitor and even a TV through HDMI, still no signal or post to BIOS.

    • Tried getting it to post via onboard graphics, bypassing the dedicated GPU. No post.

    • Ensured all PSU cables are correctly plugged in, 8-pin EPS to 8-pin CPU, x2 8 pin pcie to the GPU, 24pin to the motherboard, 1 peripheral sata to the sata ssd.

    • The M2 drive was never able to be detected by the BIOS, even after trying all 3 available m2 slots.

    • Cleared CMOS battery and reset BIOS. Still no post.

    • Reseated the GPU to ensure a proper installation into the PCIe lane.

At this point I'm not sure what could have gone wrong, from having a clean post the night before, to having nothing the next day. I don't know where to start in terms of identifying the root cause of the issue as well as the process of elimination. Whether that be the GPU, CPU, or motherboard. The only thing which strikes odd to me was that the m2 drive wasn't being detected from the beginning, despite being installed correctly and onto the m2 standoff provided.

Any help or insight here would be incredibly appreciated. Thank you so much.

    Should I get a better CPU ?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 11:41 AM PST

I'm getting ready to build my first gaming PC...I purchased an i7-9700k and an msi z390 motherboard from microcenter (cost under 340 after tax for the pair)...while I'm still within the 30 day return period, I want to figure out if I would be better off buying an i7-10700 and an msi z490. Upgrading would cost at leat 100 bucks more (at least at microcenter). Would there be a decent benefit in doing so? Would it help future proof my computer by a decent amount??? My GPU is a 3070 if that makes a difference. Thanks for the help!!

trying to figure out what cpu cooler i have

When this pc was built it was built by my friend back in 2018, now that i want to upgrade i have no idea what Cpu Cooler I have, and no idea how to remove it. i initially thought it was a cooler master hyper 212 evo but that did not turn out to be the case. All i know is that it is cooler master. I'll have a link to the photo in the comments. thanks for the help!

    I9-9900k with a temporary 980ti

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 10:17 AM PST

I'm upgrading my pc bit by bit at the moment, I'd do it all at once but money and all that. Basically I'll soon be running an i9-9900k with a GTX 980ti which I know is a massive difference performance wise. Once I have the cash (and once the gpu market stops being screwed up six ways from Sunday) I'll be upgrading to probably an RX 5800 XT or something along those lines.

My real question is has anyone here had experience running the 9900k and 980 together? What kind of performance did you get / how bad was the bottlenecking? Also do you guys think the 5700 xt is a good paring with the 9900k or should I go with something else assuming it's in the same price range?

For reference I currently have 16GB DDR4 running at 3200mhz, the i9 will be cooled by a corsair h115i aio and the 980ti is an msi card.

How flexible are the cables that come with Corsair RM650x PSUs?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 01:03 PM PST

I'm trying to tuck the ATX power cable somewhere out of the way since I want to move a case fan up into the line of the CPU. This is incredibly difficult to describe in text so here's the Imgur link to a very poorly annotated diagram.

Pink - Where I need the fan.

Blue - Management hole that the cable is currently going through.

Red - Inflexible rubber sleeve. Doesn't bend. Tried. Lots.

    Orange - Main cable

Green - The bit I'm curious about. I tried flexing it a fair bit but kept the whole cable how it is right now out of fear of over-bending and causing damage. My main question is, would I be able to bend the green portion enough so that the orange portion is completely through the blue management hole, giving me space to move the fan up?

Apologies for how poorly presented all of this is. It's late and I'm lazy.

Advice needed on what to upgrade.

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 09:57 AM PST

    Hey!

I built my first PC over a year ago now (have no major knowledge) using advice from friends and good old google.

My PC runs fine for gaming and general use, but it really struggles when it comes to Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and my most used app, Premiere Pro. Any kind of rendering or previewing of video is where the pc really struggles.

Was just wondering anyone had any advice on what I need to look to upgrade or change?

    Heres my Current build:

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor

GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER 8 GB GAMING X Video Card

MotherBoard: MSI B450 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard

Cooler: DEEPCOOL 360mm CASTLE ARGB Intel/AMD CPU Liquid Cooler

    Memory: G.Skill Aegis 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 CL16 Memory

Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Storage: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive

Power Supply: Cooler Master MasterWatt 550 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX

Case: NZXT H700 ATX Mid Tower Case

    Thanks :)

Could I get a decent gaming laptop or pc with 1000$?

    Posted: 19 Dec 2020 04:54 PM PST
