    Simple Questions - February 18, 2021

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 04:00 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Building a PC, worth it or no?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 07:45 AM PST

Please give me feed back, this is a school project and I'm in eleventh grade (last year in high school in Canada). Thanks for giving me your time!

Here's a one page about my thought on building a computer (if you don't want to read just upvote or down vote, this way I can tell my teacher people read it!)

Building a computer, worth it or no?

I built my computer a few days ago, it cost me around 2200$ CAD. The computer that I built was based off a pre-built computer by ASUS, and they were selling it for the same price. So, is it worth spending time to build your own computer or no?

The time I spent searching for my different PC parts was around two hours, making sure that my upgrades on the original build where compatible with all my components. In the end, I managed to upgrade my cooling system, my graphic card and power supply, but spent less on the case.

When I received all my components, after two weeks of wait, I started building it, taking my time to not make mistakes during the process. Overall, I'd say it took my about 8 hours to build, but I'm definitely not the fastest one and that was my first build.

I'm happy that I spent time to build it because if I need to change pieces or upgrade it in the future I'll know how to do it, but I think that buying a prebuilt PC and spending a bit more money will save you a lot of time, and during those hours saved, you can work to make money and, in the end, you will still probably save enough money to upgrade you computer.

So, was it worth it? In terms of learning new things, yes, but time wise I think buying a pre-built computer will save a lot of trouble.

    Thanks for your time!

Save up for an SSD instead of a HDD

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 10:18 AM PST

I don't know who needs to hear this, but I recently bought a 1TB HDD bcs my 500gb M.2 just wasn't cutting it. I wanted to download warzone and even before that I already used more than half of the storage.

I spent weeks deliberating on whether to get another 500gb SSD or 1TB HDD. I mean buying the HDD saves me more than half of the price of the SSD (w double the storage!). Not to mention I was unsure if another 500gb would be enough in the long run. I weighed the pros and cons. The only cons of the HDD was the noise tbh. The last time I had used a HDD was more than 2 years ago on my laptop so I've pretty much forgotten the noise it made, and I never really saw anyone explicitly complain about the noise. Well, here I am complaining about the noise to those who have forgotten how annoying it is. It's annoying.

Two days ago I bit the bullet and got myself the HDD. Installed it and everything seems to run smooth. Now I didn't really notice it on the first day, but the next day after I had downloaded games into it, I noticed it was kinda loud upon booting, but after 30 seconds or so it quiet down a bit. Now idk if it's because I'm so used to my pc being silent, but the sound is irritating me to hell and back. If I'm wearing headphones or put on music on speakers then it isn't such an issue, but when there's nothing to drown it out, that's when I get irritated.

Anyway just a short rant to say I wish I had gone for the SSD lmao. Oh well will probably upgrade it when I start working. Am just a good ol' unemployed fresh grad for now.

Recently Built PC, just got a 3070 GPU upgrade. PC wont post (1st PC build in over 15 years)

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 11:16 AM PST

In short, i built a new PC (see below)

    CPU: Ryzen 5800x

    MOBO: ROG 570x-i

GPU: I used an old 970 I got second hand while I waited for a 3070.

I received my 3070 this morning: TUF 3070 OC. After installing my 3070, all I get is a black screen. I reinstalled the 970, works perfectly.

the 5800x doesn't have integrated graphics to boot into safe mode with no GPU, and I'm struggling to find material online on how to troubleshoot this.

    Any suggestions?

    Edit for solution:

Issue: I was using a daisy-chained PUS cable for 3070 as it seems sufficient from the specs.

Solution: 3070 needs two dedicated 8 pin cables.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Random shutdowns and restarts. They happen at idle as well as during load. Seems maybe slightly more frequently during idle/low usage like watching a video but that could just be because the majority of use is at lower usage. It will just turn off then reboot. Sometimes it won't do it again for a while, others you'll get several reboots in the span of 10-20 minutes or so.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I've reseated all the power cables and checked for any obvious cuts or anything that might short. I have several times replaced the video card drivers (including doing so by removing the old drivers with DDU for as clean install as possible) as well as the chipset drivers. Some had better or worse performance but none solved the restart/shutdown issue.

I reset Windows to a fresh install.

Provide any additional details you wish below. As of now the only thing I can think of that I haven't tried is getting a PSU that has the additional 4 pin CPU connector (so 8(4+4) +4) that the B550 Steel Legend can accept. The mobo manual and the internet in general says this is optional and it's not like the stock 3600 draws a crazy amount of power, however the house this is in has really old (knob and tube, and yes I realize that is not good and is something that's being addressed when possible) wiring that is likely not providing the most stable/clean power so I wonder if having the extra 4 pin might help out in that regard.

I'm thinking I might just take it to Microcenter (where the parts were bought) so they can take a look at it but before that I figured I'd ask here to see if anyone has ideas that I hadn't tried.

Thanks for any help or suggestions. :)

    Waiting for the 3050...

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 12:18 PM PST

Should I be waiting for the 3050 or just settle for a 1660? I'm looking to build a budget pc and the one thing that I really need is a GPU, I keep getting told to wait for the 3050 which is apparently going to be around the £200 mark. I'm also at a msi 1660 armor oc as it's somthing I could pick up when ever and not rely on speculation. What's your 2cents?

    2x16GB 3600Mhz CL16 Ram recommendations?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 12:50 PM PST

Needing some recommendations for some ram.

I'm wanting 2x16GB 3600Mhz CL16 ram for my build. I've been looking around for this spec of ram, but cannot find it neither in-stock nor at a reasonable price.

I have been watching some Crucial Ballistix sticks for the longest time, but here in the UK they go like hot cakes so it's kind of hard to get them. Their 2x16GB kits used to be Dual Rank, but now they've changed the IC's and are now Single Rank. It sucks, but it's fine I guess. I just want extra capacity for streaming, so I'll only lose a few ~% or so.

Sooo yeah. Throw me some kits of ram my way with that spec, or kits of ram that will OC to that spec please!

    Thanks for reading

    New build GPU choice

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 10:54 AM PST

Hey guys, I'm looking to start my first build. Been doing lots of research for the past 2 months and here's what I have so far. It's a budget build (Gaming wise). I'm not particularly huge on gaming but would occasionally be doing some. I run a lot of virtualization utilities as part of my software development. I also intend to run a home server on the PC. I need help picking a compatible GPU, mid to low end, preferably Radeon-based. Also, any thoughts and suggestions are welcome on the build itself. Thanks.

    Looking for a monitor - 27", 1440p, > 60hz

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 11:38 AM PST

Hi, I'm looking for a new monitor. Must be 27" or bigger, 1440p, and preferably faster than 60 HZ. A monitor with good ergonomic adjustments (height and tilt) is also a must. I'm not too familiar with the market for monitors so I'm honestly not too sure what my budget should be.

I plan to use this mostly for school and work (I'm a Computer Science student so things like that). Other than school/work I do some light gaming and am also into photography so something nice for photoshop/lightroom would be nice.

One option I came across was the Asus proart display pa278qv. What do you guys think of this?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 11:24 AM PST

I'll be gaming at 1080p 144Hz and I'll usually be playing older stuff like modded Skyrim, but I'm definitely looking to be able to play some future AAA titles.

    Best options for VR

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 10:19 AM PST

I just built a nice gaming PC and now want to add the final piece, VR. I am fully aware that Valve Index is the best one you can get right now, but I'd like to see what other options there are. What are, let's say, the top VR sets to get currently? Someone recommended me the HP Reverb G2 a while back and it just released in Canada, but reviews seem iffy...So i'm not sure.

My system is more than capable of running VR to the max, specs are:

    5900x

    3080 TUF OC

    32GB 3600 CL16 RAM

    32" Optix AG32C

    1TB SSD/4TB HDD

Space wise my apartment I've got approximately 15-20 feet from the front of my TV/Monitors, and 100 or so feet width wise from my PC to the other wall.

I was looking at getting either the Valve Index or Reverb but didn't know if those were the two best options, which of the two was better, or if there were any other options that were better than even those.

3090 drops 30% FPS overnight. Fixed and Failed. S.O.S. Reward

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 12:51 AM PST

Update: We've really hammered on this but so far nothing is working. I'll continue to update the thread until I find a solution. Stardate 2077

Three nights past, my 3090 was doing 70FPS+ in AC Valhalla on Ultra. The next morning, I boot up and can barely touch 50FPS. I troubleshoot and solve with a system restore point from Jan 12th. Everything fixed.

Another night, another morning waking up to low FPS. The horror begins, my restore point has vanished and I begin my trouble shooting mega list. Hours later, I do a full system reinstall. Completely from scratch with a fresh download of Win10 Pro. I set everything back up and am barely touching 50 FPS again.

I've buried myself on this one, hours of digging around and I have nothing. I would pay a professional service if I had a good recommendation. I'd love to reward some brave fool who has Dark Souls'd the shit out of this type of thing to advise me...

    Specs: Godlike z390 / i9-9900KS (5.0Ghz) / RTX 3090 / 32gb (3600mhz) / M.2 NVME 2TB / 3440x1440 / 1600w Plat+ (story)

I think this whole mess may be related to some background windows or driver update. That may be why my restore point worked but my reinstall hasn't done anything. Maybe Realtek

EDIT: Answers to some questions they have come up:

Yes I've tried DDU, just before doing the full system reinstall. DDU didn't solve for me. After full reinstall I also tried using second to most recent Nvidia driver / no GeForce but that didn't help. I've now re-dl'd GeForce and latest driver

GPU diagnostics via afterburner are normal. Temps relatively low. Overclock on/off doesn't make a difference

Tested FPS against Valhalla, CyberPunk, and Apex Legends

    Speed me up, Scotty

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 11:18 AM PST

    Hi all,

I was very kindly given a PC several years ago (about 8 years ago) by my best friend so we can play games together and I have been meaning to upgrade it for quite a while. Whilst I have been told the processor is outdated (Which I agree with) and my PC is painfully slow, I have very little technical knowledge and have been nervous to make any changes for fear of burning the house down.

Don't want to spend crazy money, but what are my best options? Looking to make it good enough to comfortably run Overwatch, CoD, Cyberpunk at medium settings without crazy loading speeds

Any and all support would be appreciated to get me out of my predicament?

Here's a couple of images showing my hardware, idle running state and inside the case - https://imgur.com/a/SpErJMx

Choosing a CPU for a new build

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 07:17 AM PST

    Hello

I am trying to decide on my new build from scratch.

PC will be used for gaming (4K 165HZ) and work (Programming, multiple VMs and such).

Not sure about the GPU yet, will try to get 3080.

I will probably OC the CPU a bit.

One option is 9900KF for $188 from a friend of mine which is an Intel's employee.

The other is 3600X for $300 which is out of stock pretty much everywhere.

I also need a mATX board, and there almost nothing left for Z390 in this area...

    What do you guys think?

    Ram Placement

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 12:14 PM PST

    PRIME Z390-A

    G.Skill Aegis Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin SDRAM PC4-25600 DDR4 3200 CL16-18-18-38 1.35V Dual Channel Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C16D-32GIS

I don't exactly know where to ask this...

Hi, so I have a few questions regarding ram placement in A1 & B1 Opposed to A2 & B2, in the manual it says that dual channel memory architecture is supported not specifically for both channels but in this case I'm assuming its for both A1B1 & A2B2. The problem resides where A2B2 have asterisks meaning that you are supposed to occupy these first, I'm thinking this is where the dual channel is best supported? but when running the bios A2 would never become recognized it was only till I tried A1B1 that they were both recognized (I think I may have bent a pin installing the CPU cooler (NH-D15s)) Anyhow everything else is working fine assuming a cpu pin was bent which I have no idea if its just a defect in the A2 mobo slot. So do you think A1B1 would support the same dual channel feature that A2B2 would?

My Ryzen 5950X looks Dead on Arrival on my ROG STRIX x570-E gaming.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 09:58 AM PST

Did someone get such an issue ?

I have this ASUS ROG Strix X570-E for more than one year, it works nicely with an Ryzen 9 3900X.

The motherboard Bios is up to date.

The day before I used it to test some 32Go 3600C18 Memory stick with a Ryzen 5600X.

So most of the part of this build had been tested before.

The issue is strange, the PC acts as if the power supply was dead, but, I by powering it on directly from pins it starts.

    I was so happy to boot a Ryzen 5950X + 128Go Memory + 2To nvme SSD …

    now I'm so sad...

Help with upgrades to my pc

My current setup is as follow:

    • AMD FX-6300 Six-Core Processor
    • 2x 8GB RAM
    • AMD Radeon R7 200 Series
    • Generic 1TB Harddrive

After running some perfromance tests I think I need to upgrade my graphics card and get an SSD?

I want to play warzone so looked at what was a recomended graphics card for that and it said the NVIDIA GTX1660 ti/super

I don't know much and not sure if my CPU might limit me with what I can get?

    Any help is appreciated.
