    Simple Questions - February 10, 2021

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 04:00 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Where is everybody buying their used graphics cards from and what to look out for

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 02:16 AM PST

I have never owned a pc (only laptops) and since its literally impossible to find new graphics cards

I see everyone is either laying on the copium thinking that there will be suddenly 100 million RTX 3060s by May or saying that they're buying used GPUs

Where is everybody finding them? Ebay is dry and i feel like nobody really explains what to look for and how to recognise fakes

I really dont like building and gathering parts so I find this process frustrating more than fun as many people claim. I wish there was more info about actual quality prebuilts because it feels ridiculous that this is somehow normal to people

Was finally able to get a 3070

    Posted: 09 Feb 2021 08:00 PM PST

After 2 to 3 months of joining different stock discords I was able to snag a card for myself. It wasn't my first choice but I got the MSI Ventus 3x OC. I can finally start to build my first and much needed gaming/work pc since mine is on its last legs. Goodluck to everyone still trying to get a new gpu/cpu right now, especially for those waiting for the 3060 release.

    New 3080 smells

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 03:45 AM PST

Recently got my Asus 3080 TUF OC and it seems to be making a fairly strong smell. Hard to describe, but it smells like heat, maybe a bit like burning.

At first I thought it could be dust getting burnt up due to me opening the case and moving things around (although I did spray away a lot of dust with compressed air). But it's still there after a week and gets much stronger when the GPU is under load.

My PSU is 750w and the recommendation for this card is 850w, although I've looked at the power draw of the CPU/GPU and it looks fine. The smell definitely isn't coming from the PSU either.

My temperatures are fine, and the GPU itself seems to be performing as expected.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

A word of hope for anxious first-time builders

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 06:01 AM PST

Yes, building a PC can be super simple, but it can also be absurdly stressful, leading to panic/anxiety feelings - as every time we leave our comfort zone. But you will get through it, and you will win, one way or another. Even if it is not exactly the way you wanted. It isn't easy to absorb a bunch of new information, invest your precious money, time, and energy, and end up finding issues after issues before finishing your setup. Mostly if people depend on you in your household - financially and emotionally. I'm also a first-time pc builder, and I started that because I needed a real video editing/motion PC - absolutely 0% gamer here. But life is life, and everything needed to go wrong before going right. Briefly, the pc didn't boot; I sent it to 2 technicians and ended up returning the CPU. This situation lasted a couple of months and all troubleshooting possible, while I was working 10h a day, studying a bunch of stuff, taking care of my family, and adapting myself to a new country. But I was able to solve it by not giving up. Remember, in the end, money goes back and forth anyways. And we, anxious people, tend to think more of the worse. So try not to get too obsessive. Trust yourself, trust the people around you, and trust we have to make mistakes to make it right one day. =')

Can I clone Windows 10 from my old HDD to a M.2 for my new build?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2021 09:05 PM PST

I have an old prebuilt with Windows 10 OEM + a few games that I would like to use in my new build.

My new build is going to use a M.2 as my primary boot drive.

If I put in the HDD and boot to it on my first start, can I then clone the it to the SSD after basically wiping the HDD of everything except the OS and a few big games. Then use the SSD as my main/boot drive and take the HDD out of the system?

Is this illegal or anything? Or how would I go about doing such a task? Will it require an activation key upon booting to the M.2 for the first time?

I'm pretty clueless so any help would be appreciated.

Just got a 3070. Not sure between 5600x and 10700k. Have the rest of the build that I need to confirm is any good

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 02:32 PM PST

I managed to get a 3070 today and now im trying to figure out the rest of my build. I have a friend who got a 5600 but decided he didn't want it and will sell it to me for MSPR. I keep seeing debates on whether the 5600x or 10700k is better and I have no idea what to think. General conclusion i've come to is that as of right now, on 1440 60z for gaming, the difference between the two is minimal. 5600 has PCIe 4 but 10700k has an extra 2 cores. 5600 has less power consumption (though I'm not sure how much that matters).

Would love to hear opinions on the two. Besides that though, the rest of my build is the same. Would love people to see if they can find anything better. Microcenter is an option if it's a good deal, but i'd prefer not to.

Please help, I know nothing about computers

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 02:00 PM PST

Hi. I've only ever had a console and I'm gonna try and take it to the next step by building a PC now that a new xbox is similar in price anyway, I was wondering if anyone on here could help me? I've only been researching for a couple days and was wondering if someone could help me check to see if all these parts are compatible, I only just found out that different pieces don't work with others and I don't know all the different terms to see what's compatible. Also if I have anything missing please let me know, I'm not planning on getting a sound card right away as I plan on using headphones. I plan on mainly using this for gaming and maybe a couple other odd softwares. Any help is appreciated.

About to pull the trigger on parts for a new pc. Looking for any advice/suggestions on improving

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 04:57 AM PST

I was at first planning on going for an all white build but was unable to find a white MoBo and GPU, and while I could paint the GPU I dont really want to get messy by trying to paint the MoBo, so if anyone knows any good white MoBos in the 200-250$ price range I would love to hear your suggestions.

    PC:

CPU: Ryzen 5 5600x GPU: RTX 3080 (whichever I can get my hands on) MoBo: Asus Rog Strix B550-F Gaming Wifi Ram: 2x16 Gb Crucial Ballistix DDR4-3600 CL-16 Storage: kind of split between Western Digital SN750 1TB m.2 ssd or the SN850 PCIe 4.0 ssd, just not sure how much of an improvement it will actually be and not sure if its worth the extra money (im building my PC for gaming) Cooling: AIO Cooler either Asus Rog Strix LC360 or Corsair iCUE H150i RGB Pro XT PSU: 850 Watt from either the ASUS ROG Strix lineup or a corsair RM850X (not really sure which brands are reliable PSU makers) Case: been looking into the Thermaltake Core P3 but im worried that it will be kind of noisy since its open frame (case doesn't really matter to me as long as it has good airflow and im open to suggestions.)

Any tips on how I could improve would be greatly appreciated :)

    1440p 27" Monitor choice.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 06:01 AM PST

I was lucky enough to score a 3070 back in December from Best Buy to replace my failed 970. As such, my 1080p 27" BENQ XL2720Z is due an upgrade now. Most important things to me are

    • 27" 1440p
    • 144hz+
    • low response time for gaming
    • Gsync native or compatible

Narrowed the search down to a few of the more popular ones but I'm having a lot of trouble making the final decision. I realize there's been a few posts like this but wanted to look at this from the 2021 lens and I put the time into a list with links that may help others in the same hunt. Few outstanding questions:

    1. Most of these seem to be 2019 or early 2020 models. Wonder if I'm missing a gem released later.
    2. Some like the ASUS TUF, ASUS ROG Strix and Viewsonic ELITE are Display port 1.2 instead of Display port 1.4. Does that matter? DP 1.4 has higher bandwidth but I'm assuming each monitor can meet the specs with the port it has so maybe it doesn't? That would be my biggest concern of paying a premium for something like the Strix.
    3. I've been reading where some monitors can't do things like VRR (Gsync specifically) and overdrive at the same time. I think all the monitors I have on the list can at least do it but any gotchas like that to shorten the list would help.
    4. Any real difference between the Gsync Compatible and Native Gsync? Only native Gsync on this list is the ViewSonic ELITE but it's also one of the most expensive.

      $599 Asus ROG Strix XG279Q 27". IPS Panel Tom's hardware best 1440p splurge.Display port 1.2. Gsync compatible

$299 Gigabyte G27Q 27" 144hz. PC Gamer best freesync. IPS Panel. Display port 1.2. Gsync compatible

$599 ViewSonic ELITE XG270QG 27" 144hz 1ms IPS Panel. Display port 1.2 Gsync native (look at XG270Q gsync compatible one)

$399.99 LG 27GN850-B 27" 144hz 1ms IPS Panel. Updated version for 2020 of GL. Gsync compatible

$379.99 LG 27GL83A-B 27" IPS 1ms 144hz. Older color standard. Same panel as GN850. Gsync compatible

$500? MSI Optix MAG274QRF-QD newer model, highly rated by hardware unboxing. No Amazon Prime. No Best Buy. Where to find?

$465 Dell S2721DGF 27" IPS 165hz new ips panel. Gsync compatible

    $410 Asus TUF VG27AQ 27" IPS 165hz. Display Port 1.2. Gsync compatible

    What to upgrade?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 05:10 AM PST

I want to upgrade my pc to be able to games like warzone on good quality and high frames, currently able to get 60 fps on warzone consistently with the lowest settings. I would also like to be able to record but not matter what settings I use OBS recordings are always 5fps slideshows.

    My specs are:

    Ryzen 5 2600x 3.6 GHz

    ASUS Radeon rx580 4GB

    ASRock B450m Pro4

    Corsair Vengeance DDR4 16GB

    Corsair CX550

I can run most games all right but would like to be able to record newer games and to run them at around 120fps or higher. Any help is appreciated!

    Best PC Under 2860?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 11:20 AM PST

So I want to build a gaming pc, or buy a prebuilt but most I see suck, and have it be able to run 4k and 60fps minimum at max settings on almost every mainstream game (Minecraft with mods, Fortnite, Apex Legends, League of Legends, etc.) My budget is 3000$ and I have a timeframe of 1.5 years to make and buy everything, because I'll have enough money probably around January if i save everything or this time, next year. I have gone to pcpartpicker and picked everything I could scrounge that was good enough, but I'd also need someone to rate if it would be good. The monitors I picked below are going to be the ones I use unless something like 144hz Hdmi 2.1 came out. Thanks!

(Mini rant) i paid it forward to the next guy in line!

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 02:57 PM PST

So i ordered a 3080 strix from canadacomputers, on day 1. I called in january inquiring as to where it was, they said they havent gotten any for 90 says, so i had my order moved to a 3080FTW3. I get a call 2 weeks ago saying my strix came in, and i picked it up without thinking much of it (Great card by the way).

I just got another call saying the 3080 ftw3 came in, i told my buddies about it seeing if they wanted it and nobody did, so instead of picking it up and scalping it to make money like everyone said, i just canceled it to let the next person in line get it. I have nobody to really say it to besides my friends who think i am an idiot, but i know i did the right thing and i feel really proud of myself.

Accidentally turned off power strip, now PC won't power on at all

    Troubleshooting Help:

    Hi Everyone,

I was in the middle of binging some Hulu last night when I accidentally hit the switch on my power strip with my foot and turned everything off. Unfortunately, the strip was supplying power to my desktop and my two monitors. When I flipped it back on, my monitors were still good to go, but my desktop refused to respond anymore.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

-PC refuses to power on, fans don't spin, MOBO won't even shine lights to indicate issue.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

-Confirmed strip was still working and could supply power on the same outlets to other devices

-Unplugged power cord and turned off PSU for eight hours, plugged back in and turned PSU on. RAM, AIO and GPU briefly came on lighting-wise but MOBO did not beep and fans did not spin. Afterwards, everything refused to turn on at all.

-Reset CMOS via onboard button, did not work.

-Computer is fairly new, only three months old. BIOS up to date, not overclocked, only change from base is that XMP was enabled on RAM to allow for 3200 mhz speed vs 2133 base.

    i3 8100 vs i7 3820

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 05:38 AM PST

So I looked up for PC parts and stuff, and I found these two Processors in a marketplace, the i3 8100 and the i7 3820. Now the thing is I needed and wanted an upgrade for my computer, and the budget is quite tight. But I happened to find these two at the same price, with a motherboard bundled with it. (oh, also a 4GB stick of ram on the 8100 how convenient) Now I mostly use my computer mostly gaming for now, but also a bunch of multi-tasking once our break ends.

I've done research, mostly says that the i7 is more faster, but the i3 is much more recent. (5 years apart is no joke) And the i7 uses DDR3 RAM if I'm not mistaken, and the i3 uses DDR4. Another thing is, currently my PC has 2 sticks of 4 GB DDR3 RAM. Now if I'll choose the i7, that means I can just put these 2 sticks in the i7's motherboard and I'll be fine, right? No need to purchase another set of RAMs? As opposed to the i3 in which I'll need to buy another 4GB just to match the ones I currently have.

Now I really, REALLY need your help guys cause this is making my head hurt, thinking if I'll regret a purchase or no, (tight budget dammit) and you guys are pros in these stuff. Thank you in advance to anyone who's willing to help and I appreciate it so much! Have a good day!
