    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

My PC build experience in 2021

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 09:07 AM PST

Me: "I just need a GPU and my build is complete"

Me: "Why would I pay (insert price) for a 10/20 series GPU when I can get a 30 series which is better for cheaper"

Me: *cant find a 30 series*

Me: "Fine, I guess I'll pay for a 20 series and suck it up"

    Me: *can't find a 20 series either*

    Me: FUCK

You don’t actually always need the latest and greatest thing.

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 08:40 AM PST

4-5 months ago I was in the planning and part picking stage, and being in the $700-$800 USD price range I was finding it hard to fit everything I wanted into my build. Long story short I ended up buying a used GTX 1060 paired with a R3 3100, and a 75hz monitor (idc too much about high refresh rates). Then a couple months later all the new CPUs and GPUs came out, and I found myself caught up in buyers remorse, thinking I should have waited and gotten something better. I then came to a realization that my 1060 has met the recommended requirements for every game I had tried so far, and at 75hz I don't need anything more.

This is just a friendly reminder that with all the buzz of new hardware and all the fancy things it can do, sometimes you don't need the latest and greatest components for your use case.

ETA: I'm not saying you shouldn't buy new graphics cards, because if you can afford it and it works for you that's probably better! All I'm saying is I see a lot of people on this sub posting their builds that they are proud of with older generation hardware, and there are always people in the comments saying "why wouldn't you get a 3070" or "new ryzen processors just came out why would you get a 2600" when maybe they couldn't afford the newest thing, or they just plain don't need the newest thing.

PC For Someone Confined to a Couch/Bed

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 07:22 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I am in the process of building a pretty powerful rig so I can video edit and game on. Long story short, I have a medical issue that requires me to be confined to a couch/bed for most of the day. Sitting straight up in a chair causes me intense pain after about 45 minutes. I am currently building a PC and trying to find an inexpensive way to be able to use my PC on my couch but also have it relatively easy to move if I want to put it back on my desk or move it to my bed.

Is there any sort of stand or desk around $300 max that would be able to accommodate me? I've tried to Google it but can find absolutely nothing but laptop stands. I was thinking maybe someone else has run into this problem or knows of a product that can accommodate me.

    Thanks!

EDIT: Has anyone ever tried using their TV as a monitor? I mean, I do video editing and gaming and sit about 12 feet from the TV so not sure how well that would work.

    Need more storage for games

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 12:04 PM PST

Should I upgrade my SSD or upgrade to a hard drive? I have a WD Blue 500GB NVME SSD.

Me personally I'm all about speed so to answer my own question I don't think a hard drive will do me any favors^ ,

does anyone know any SSD's with 2TB that is reliable, fast, and somewhat not insane in price?

Thanks for any help I appreciate it.

Why does ram speed matter more for amd?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 07:22 AM PST

I've heard that ram speed matters more for amd than intel because of a thing called the Infinity Fabric. I was wondering if that's true for all their cpus? If so, what speed should I go for?

Hello, Im a 15year old try a build my first gaming PC. Help plz

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 03:50 AM PST

Okay, so I have my parts picked out and stuff but some ppl where telling my build was wrong some where but did not tell where (regarded as mega idiots).

This is my build ( read the desc of it) - https://pcpartpicker.com/list/FBsgqp

I'm pretty sure the mother board was being talked about because it's a mini itx.

I am gonna be using it for playing fortnite mostly. Criticism appreciates and other builds are also appreciated.

Pls don't downvote this I really need the help cause I will be building it this month.

    Thx everyone

Should I buy my parts all at once or once they're available?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 12:33 PM PST

I already have a good idea of what I want my first build to be, but unfortunately that means I'm on the "waiting for a scrap of 3060 Ti to come by my way" team. Is it better to get everything now or to wait for the GPU?

    Hello all.

Recently my computer suddenly started crashing. Not blue screen crashing, but complete power off. This is followed by an immediate restart of the computer.

I've noticed that this problem always occurs while playing wow but havent figured out why.

The game is playing just fine, no stutters, no lags, nothing. For my specs it should be playing fine. I'm playing it in 2k 144hz settings but have been for a while.

I recently switched RAM and Monitor, but that was already 3 months ago. The problem only started 3 weeks ago. The first time it happened, it immediately happened again after rebooting and starting wow. However, there was a second windows install on my second harddrive which I could boot from. I didnt experience any problem playing from that drive (wow was still on original harddrive).

After resting it for a night, the PC was fine for a week, playing again from the main drive, but after a week it started crashing again. And now also when booting from the second harddrive. This leads me to think that it defintely isnt a software issue, but a hardware one.

After this, I tried to locate the problem via exchanging some stuff, but haven't found anything. It keeps happening and sometimes really random. It can go on for days and be fine, and then suddenly crash.

    Stuff I've done:

    Replaced PSU

Cleared CMOS, tried out every ram slot, with 1 or 2 sticks. (I couldnt manage to boot computer with old ram, might this be a clue?).

    Replaced cooling paste for CPU

    Replaced Sata cables

    Cleaned out dust

    Ram test: was fine

    CPU stress test: was fine

    Harddisk test: was fine

Things which I think could still be the problem:

    -GPU?

    -Motherboard?

-CPU? (both motherboard and CPU are only 1.5years old.)

    -RAM?

    -Maybe software issue?

I'm quite desperate as I cant find much online. So I would be very grateful for any ideas here.

Asus RTX 3060 Ti Dual on 500W PSU?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 01:11 PM PST

    Hi,

I was able to grab an Asus 3060 Ti Dual, I am planning to upgrade my PSU to a 750W or 850W, but the card is arriving today, and I probably won't have the new PSU until next week. As you can imagine, I'm itching to try it out.

Will I be able to run it without any danger if I undervolt for now or is 500W just not enough? My current PSU is a Be Quiet! Bronze, running an R 3700X with a Gigabyte B550 Vision D motherboard. Currently using a GTX 1660 Super.

How do I power 2 GPUs (noob)

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 10:07 AM PST

So im going to be running a linux/mac os/windows KVM system and for that I need an amd gpu. I currently have an rtx 3080 but mac os only runs on Radeon cards so I'm thinking of buying a cheap rx 580 for that purpose. The issue is my power supply (850 watt) has 3 GPU power connectors which go into my rtx 3080, is there any other way of me powering the rx 580 which requires a single 8 pin connector when all of them are used by my 3080. Sorry for the noob question.

What do tech youtubers do with so many PCs they build?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2021 11:09 PM PST

Basically the title, like i can understand if any brand send them stuff to review and use for publicity purposes.

But once the pc is built, do they sell it? I can see many shelves in LTT and Bitwit videos, does they ever use everything in the shelves in all of their videos?

I'm new to the community, used to game on console but now i want to be part of the pc master race lol so i got curious.

I just bought a 3070 Ventus and a 2 year protection plan with it totaling $865 and I'm having my doubts on my entire purchase. I just bought it today and wanted to know if I could return it all and get my $865 back on my card. I didn't open anything and don't know if you can return a protection plan.

    Gaming monitor recommendations

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 07:02 AM PST

Hello everyone. I'm looking for a new gaming monitor to use with my laptop. Budget is $250-$350, if possible.

Specs: Acer Predator Helios 300 (three years old now!), GeForce GTX 1060 6GB.

Ideally I'd like a 27 inch+ curved monitor, but if that doesn't fit within the budget, I may be able to stretch the $ if necessary. I don't do any "heavy" gaming, a few RPGs and older games - nothing that requires a brand new video card (obviously) or anything competitive.

I did check out Tom's Hardware for the recent gaming monitor article but I was a bit confused by the new monitor requirements (G-sync and Freesync).

    Thanks!

How to update BIOS on ASUS TUF Gaming AM4 Motherboards if you plan to mount a Ryzen 5000 series processor.

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 03:34 AM PST

Recently I've finished my new PC build with a Ryzen 5800X in a motherboard Asus Tuf Gaming B550M-plus Wi-fi.

An unexpected error appeared with the motherboard and nowhere in the manuals told me what to do, found the solution on forums but I think it's something ASUS needs to adress because it's not something unusual, it's going to happen to anyone with a Ryzen 5000.

In order for the mb to recognize the CPU you need to upgrade de BIOS. This error shows when powering up everything for the first time and trying to enter the BIOS for setting up the components correctly (RAM speed, checking storage, etc). A light appears in the VRAM Led indicator in yellow/orange, you can try with the RAM sticks (as I did) and nothing changes.

What you need to do is the following:

    1. First you need to download with another PC into a USB the correct BIOS. Search for it on the ASUS support page of your specific motherboard and download the version that at least says "Update AMD AM4 AGESA V2", the first ressult to appear must work correctly, as it's the newer version.
    2. Make sure to format your USB into FAT32 using windows and to follow the steps on how to rename the BIOS. It would download on a folder with an executable to rename it correctly. Just double click and wait.
    3. When the file is correctle named paste it into the clean and formated USB with nothing else on it, just this file, in the root directory.
    4. Plug this USB into the motherboard in the "BIOS" usb port and press the Flashback button for 3 seconds. Green lights should start blimping. Ideally if you have a USB with an LED it will give you more feedback for when it's in use.
    5. IMPORTANT! Do not extract or cut the power until the light stops. It would take around 5 minutes.
    6. When it's done unplug the USB and reboot your system.

From then you should be able to access the BIOS interface and adjust your parameters for the rest of the components, and install your O.S.

Another way of doing this is to install a Ryzen 3000 into the motherboard, upgrade BIOS from there and then change to the Ryzen 5000... it's obviusly a lot more complex.

I leave this here so it's helpful to someone else as I struggled a bit. If someone from ASUS reads this, please, address this issue on your manuals or website clearly, at least until you release your motherboards pre-installed with the correct BIOS.

    Thanks and see you soon!

How to know if you need to flash BIOS for Ryzen 5000 series? When to do it?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 01:43 PM PST

My new build will consist of a Ryzen 5600x and a MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk motherboard. This might sound like a dumb question (its my first build) but how do I know if I have to flash the BIOS? Also, do I do this after putting together the PC or before as I've seen videos and the CPU isn't attached to the motherboard when flashing.
