    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

I just spent 4 hours troubleshooting a pc that I didn't turn on...

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 07:18 AM PST

After 4 hours of panicking and considering that I had just wasted 1.5k pounds, I realized I had turned on my PSU switch but not the power button on my case... For all of the PC building newbies out there, here's another lesson. Turn on your case as well as your PSU, it'll save you 4 hours of life-reconsideration and a whole deal of panic.

    This is a new low...

    I bent my CPU pinns.

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 08:40 AM PST

I wanted to change my cpu's thermal paste. The old paste had dried so much that I had to use little bit more force than normal.

After I got the cpu and the cooler off and put new paste, I had difficulties to put it all back together. I couldn't put the cooler in place no matter what I tried.

The corner screws seemed a little bit too short so I pushed the cooler against the mobo and tried to get the screws to touch the threads.

After doing this for a while, I took it all apart and noticed that the cooler had a mount and it had fallen under the mobo in the process when I unscrewed it the first time. Felt like a fucking moron. Then I looked at the cpu and notived that in one of the corners I had bent all the pins while entering the caveman mode.

It took me almost two hours while I tried to carefully straighten all the pins and all the rows. Somehow, the CPU works just like before but I'm scared to take it off anymore since I fear that the pins will break once and for all the next time I do it.

    What a god damn day.

What does long-term PC maintenance look like for you guys? Any tips and tricks to keep PCs clean and in great shape?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 04:02 PM PST

Of course I see all the posts for purchasing, building and getting software started up. But I'm curious what everybody does to keep their PC maintained.

I continuously feel like I'm lazy with my PC. Dust the outside of the case and filters every now and then, but rarely if ever actually open the case to clean it out. Antibacterial handiwipes by the computer to keep grease and such off my peripherals. Maybe once a year I'll pop the keys off my mechanical keyboard for a thorough cleaning.

Is there anything else important us casuals might not know about? Or any tips and tricks to keep things tidy?

I’ve been ignorant about air flow for the last 3 years

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 06:51 AM PST

First of all I'm not a english native speaker, so bear with me

Little back story : I built my PC in late 2017 when ryzen 1st gen came out, which R5 1600 paired with GTX 1060, with local brand case called "Cube Gaming", it has side tempered glass panel, PSU shroud, and decent cable management and only cost $40, it came with front 120mm intake fan, it has 2 front and 2 rear fan slot

Late last year i managed to snag RTX 3060ti to prepare cyberpunk release, and everything went great, it perform OK. but my CPU temp peaked at 87c after 30mins of gameplay, i thought huh it's time for thermal paste change after all since I havent change it from the first time I build my PC

I bought Kryonaut thermal paste after reading all the good review, and after I gone some hell applying it because the CPU stuck to my cooler because of thermal hardened and I bent some of my CPU pin because i pried my cpu using screwdriver and it do somersault to the floor (thats for another story) i successfully applied the thermal paste. I booted my PC and still reach 85c when playing cyberpunk. I just shrugged it off, and keep stop playing for 2-3 mins until my temp cooled off then continue playing several times every gaming period

Then i thought what if I buy exhaust fan, because i never have one for this build (I had 2intake 2exhaust fan in my previous build). Then i bought 1 pwm fan, install it, magically my peak temps now only 73c even only set it 70% rpm. I ignorantly think eh it's only 1 measly 120mm fan, what could it make any different for the last 3 years

And i learned my lesson for all of my future build

Windows updates MIGHT reset your monitor refresh rate

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 04:25 AM PST

Posting here in case it happens to anyone else but I'm sure it happened to me. Like why would i set my refresh rate back to 60hz when I set it to 144 after setting up the monitor in the first place.

So to all the people that say "oh my god, my friend got himself a high refresh monitor and he played on 60hz the whole time cuz he didn't see any difference", well ... maybe big windows updates did that.

It can also reset/happen when your display driver crashes.

Why is my SSD displayed in BIOS but not when I run the PC?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 08:39 AM PST

I have 2 SSDs in my PC build - an nvme m.2 and a sata SSD - the latter is only visible in my bios but not when running the system... What am I doing wrong? Also if this is the wrong forum hint me where I should go and ask? Much obliged :)

My rig can run AAA titles no problem but crashes when I watch YouTube...

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 06:51 AM PST

So I recently upgraded my CPU and motherboard, and suddenly my rig can't handle media-streaming.

I play RDR2, Witcher 3, and Doom Eternal at 60fps no problem. And watching video files causes no issues - it's only when I stream videos off YouTube, Netflix, Twitch etc. I've tried streaming on Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, to see if it's a browser problem, and they all give me the blue screen of death.

Crashes happen about once a day. I'm not overclocking anything, and my PC/CPU temps are stable at 55 - 69 degrees.

    Specs:

    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3500X 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor

    • Motherboard: Gigabyte B550M DS3H Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard

    • Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT

    • RAM: 16gb (Gloway DDR4 8G PC4-21300 RAM TYPE-A + Samsung Electronics Memory RAM Desktop DDR4 8GB PC4-21300)

    • PSU: Zalman EcoMax 600W 83+ ATX ZM600-PE

I've heard mixing RAM brands is frowned upon, so could this be the issue?

PS: I'm very new to PC building, and I wouldn't have gotten very far without the help of this sub. So thank you :)

19 hours after the first attempt to boot, I finally realized that I’m an idiot

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 11:30 AM PST

I just built my first pc this week, and I was super excited. 3070 FE (thank you Best Buy!), 5600x, the works. I started building at 7pm on Thursday shooting to be done around 10. After a lot of screws and a brief freak out because I thought my AiO cooler didn't come with a ryzen mount (it did), everything was plugged in and ready to go. At around 11:30 I plugged everything in and went to boot to bios. Hit the power button, all my fans lit up, the debug lights on the motherboard turned on...and no display. For the next three hours my roommates and I tried to troubleshoot the issue, until around 2 am when we decided to call it and try to fix it on Friday. The next day we picked up troubleshooting around 12 with a friend who's built around 30 pc's. We tried literally everything, including stripping the motherboard and re-flashing the bios just in case it hadn't worked the first time. At 6 pm we decided the only solution we had left was replacing the motherboard.

Some quick backstory, I am using 2x16 Corsair RBG Vengeance Pro DDR4 3200 RAM. When I ordered the RAM the first time, I accidentally put in the wrong shipping address, so I placed a second order in case the first didn't go through. Both ended up going through, and 2 sets of RAM arrived. Oh well, I have 64 gigs of RAM now, might as well fill up my slots.

So after deciding the motherboard must be faulty, I got on the phone with MSI support and explained the situation. The guy asked what RAM I was using, and then told me my motherboard was only compatible with one set of my RAM. He said to pull out slot 1 and 3 and try to boot to BIOS. And when I did, it opened to BIOS right away. I spent 19 hours trying to fix a PC that wouldn't have needed fixing had I stuck to my planned build. In conclusion, always triple check your compatibilities!

Edit: For those who are asking, I'm using an MSI MPG B550 Gaming Carbon WIFI, and the RAM is stated above. The issue wasn't the the mobo can't support 64 gb of RAM (it can support 4x32) but that it can't support 4 of the specific stick I was using.

As an aside, I actually did get the computer to display bios 3 times with all 4 sticks, but it didn't ever let me install windows afterwards. It recognized all four sticks of RAM too, which made me even more confident that that wasn't an issue.

    Ryzen 9 3950X or Ryzen 9 5900X?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 11:37 AM PST

I currently have a 3950X, I use my PC for gaming and programming, should I keep my 3950X for future proofing or should I return it and get a 5900X when it's back in stock?

Finally after weeks n weeks hunting n trading. I scored a 5900x + rtx 3080... Unfortunately I feel its isn't over. Help please!

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 07:38 AM PST

The card I got is an Aorus rev 1.0. Which lacks the 3rd 8 pin an I read it's unable to meet stock power delivery. Yes I know I should be happy but it still others me somehow

However, a friend is offering me a decent trade with an 3070 Aorus. Should I take it?

Meet the trash can a friend in my circle didn’t have a pc and so as you do I did all in my power and with the help of my friends got all the parts for a pc for her

    Specs are

Amd fx 8120 10 gigs of ram (weird number I know) r7 370

I'm going on a bit of a pc crusade and I'm trying my best to upgrade my friends prebuilt or in this case make someone a new pc because they wanted it I'm dragging my friends to the pc master race wether they like it or not

I just need some gpus now really I was going to get some but the guy ghosted me

My plan was to get everyone' a computer or as upgraded as possible and if I had a gpu left over And it was weaker then anything I gave everyone I'd put it into a spare pc I'm working on and possibly sell it to recoup the cost or give to another friend if they need Idk

We're all in the 16 age range so doing all this isn't easy especially without a job due to covid but part one of my plan is complete with a build and hopefully by the end of 2021 all my friends will be gaming

    connect everything

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 12:26 PM PST

so ive been planning my new pc since april 2020 and considering i drop to 30 frames even in league of fucking legends, ive been looking forward to this. and i know when u build a pc it's not gonna go perfect and it might not even boot or work in the beginning. well, mine booted but didn't recognize my only drive, SSD. so i tried some steps to fix it but it didn't help, actually made it worse, pc wouldn't boot anymore. the next fucking day i realized i hadn't connected power to my SSD, id only connected sata. sooo, i give my SSD some power and boots no problem, recognizes my SSD no problem, new pc up and running no problem. moral of the story, connect all ur wires and double check

so excited for my new pc, can finally abandon my shitty old pc that used to be a security camera system.

    Unsolvable PC freezing mystery

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 01:15 PM PST

Built a PC mid 2019. About August 2020 or so, started getting random freezes every now and then. No blue screen nothing, just system loses responsiveness, I can still move the mouse, open a tab that's minimized in the taskbar. But closing it shows it minimized and can no longer open it, at times I can use CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to see task manager and rarely not, if it does pop up, all performance graphs are frozen and occasionally GPU 3D spikes to 100%, however if task manager was already open, no spikes occur when a freeze occurs, no irregularities anywhere. Tried MSIAfterburner to log graphs too, shows no significant irregularities, nothing is even close to overheating. Can't force a freeze and PC rarely freezes while gaming, even with maxed out graphics. If I'm in a game, e.g. TFT (League of Legends), and a freeze occurs, discord and such all freeze, so no one can hear me nor I can hear them, but I can still play the game until it's over. To add to this, even though frozen I can still hear through the headset, monitor works etc., if I plug anything out of the PC and plug it back in, no response. This is the case for the monitors (GPU) and all USBs (MotherBoard). RAM location was changed, didn't solve it. New RAM has been added since around October or September, still happening. Windows was reinstalled, didn't help. Sent it to an IT guy who stress tested the PC and did some diagnostics. Nothing came up. Rebooted Windows from scratch. Issue is still occurring. All drivers up to date.

I'm looking for anyone who either dealt with something like this or knows how to fix it (without buying a new PC). I unfortunately don't have spare parts on hand so I can't replace each part until the issue doesn't occur.MB - X570 AORUS ELITEGPU - GeForce RTX 2060 SUPERCPU - AMD Ryzen 5 3600X 6-Core ProcessorRAM - Vengrance LPX 3200MHz DDR4 2x16GB

120hz not smooth but 60hz is buttery smooth on PC to TV gaming

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 12:58 PM PST

Hi all, the issue I ran into today is that I set my tv to 120hz so I could play while on my couch using an HDMI cable from my PC to the TV directly. Issue is, when playing for example Assassins creed Valhalla and turning the fps limit off the game is just janky and not smooth at all. If i set it to 60hz and v-sync on the game is buttery smooth in comparison.

Anyone knows what could be the issue here? For example when I'm looking at my windows desktop on TV and move my mouse it's obviously 120hz and working fine. The games however feel worse than 60hz.

    Thanks for any ideas :)

Botched my MOBO pins. Tell me your horror stories to make me feel better?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 07:19 PM PST

Just like the title says, my first build's been going through some rotten luck. My first motherboard worked for a few weeks, then just never recieved power again. My second motherboard was whining about RAM, so I reseated it everywhere, cried a bit, replaced both sticks, reset the CMOS, just to find out the culprit is probably some pins I bent on my CPU socket. :/ Might've put the cooler on too tight. Mobo #3 coming Sunday. Needless to say, I'm having a rough time with my little guy. Have any of you botched a build? Any tales of newbie mistakes to ease the pain?

Are external graphic cards good for gaming?

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 11:18 AM PST

Hey everyone, I wanted to know if I can turn my basic laptop into a gaming one purely through purchasing external hardware. I currently have a basic asus laptop I use for school. I don't have the funds to buy a gaming pc and I'm generally a console player. I do want to start playing pc games to play certain games with my friends. I wanna run games like dragonball fighterz, mw2, mw2, monster hunter etc.

I know from being a music producer, I was able to improve the sound of my laptop by getting an external sound drive. I was wondering, if I were to buy an external graphics card, would I be able to run these games on max settings without any issues?

    Ryzen 7 3700x and 3600 MHz RAM

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 02:42 PM PST

Just upgraded my ram from 3200 MHz to 3600 MHz. I'm trying to achieve a 1:1 ratio. I just want to double check my asus bios settings.

Enabled D.O.C.P. BCLK freq - 100 Memory Frequency - DDR4-3600 FCLK - 1800 Core Boost - enabled Rest set to auto

    Am I missing anything?

My bios still says the ratio is 36.0x but I'm not sure I'm looking at the right thing.

    Water cooling vs Air cooling

    Posted: 16 Jan 2021 12:16 PM PST

I'm a bit new to the pc world so don't be too hard on me but I see a lot of people and popular streamers have liquid cooling but i have been reading articles online and it seems like air cooling is a lot quieter and more efficient than liquid cooling. Am I wrong? Is the gap between the 2 types of cooling not big. Pros and cons of each cooling?

    Broke my motherboard

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 10:11 PM PST

First time building a PC and I wrecked my motherboard. Wasn't booting to bios and the cpu and dram lights kept flashing back and forth.

Did some troubleshooting and pulled the CPU off and a bunch of the pins were really bent. Tried to straighten them and I think 2 are either completely gone or bent so deeply into the socket that I can't get them out.

Pretty bummed about it...spent a lot of money on all this stuff and now I need a new motherboard.

Will be more careful next time. If I mess it up again I can't really afford to do anything else which would mean I spent a ton of money for nothing.

UPDATE: I bought a new motherboard, installed the cpu and everything very carefully. It's booting up and everything works! 😁 I learned my lesson about CPU installation, and am just grateful it wasn't a more expensive lesson. Thanks for helping me feel like I wasn't alone through this, /r/buildapc, I appreciate you!
