This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Would it be clever if I upgraded my CPU now, and my GPU in about a year?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 05:25 AM PST

I'd like to change my old system and drop the old mobo, ddr3 ram and CPU and go for a new b550m mobo, dddr4 ram and a ryzen 5 3600. Would it be wise if I bought a GPU later on, because I don't have the money to do so now?

    CPU : i5 4460

    GPU : r9 fury tri-x oc edition

    RAM : 12GB DDR3

    MOBO : Gigabyte GA-H97-HD3

    Storage : SSD 250GB ( failing ) and HDD 1 TB

First build. 10 year old son's Xmas present.

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 12:52 AM PST

Being a long time lurker of this sub, I have learned so much. My son is extremely happy with his new gaming PC and so am I.

I only ran into one major issue and had to tear down and rebuild three times. When I powered on nothing happened except for the ram lighting up. Then on a hunch I took out the WiFi card and everything lit up and came to life. That was the biggest sense of relief that I've felt in a long time. I returned the wifi card and bought a USB adapter for now. Idk if it's an issue with the card or the slot?

It was a very rewarding project and I had a blast building it with my son.

This is an awesome sub and was my number one resource from start to finish.

Got myself a RTX 3080 but what case should I get ? Help me out

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 02:19 AM PST

Hey guys! So long story short; I have my previous build which rocks a GTX 1080 EVGA FTW - I5 6600k - 16g DDR4 - Cooler Master liquid cooler for my CPU. I have purchased some new components and figured I might as well change the whole rig. So here's an Imgur link with my New Parts (I also got myself a 850W modular power bank)

Would anyone recommend a specific case for good airflow and ease of build ? I had my eyes on the Corsaire D4000 for now.

    Cheers 🍻

Is a Ryzen 5 3600 build still worth it?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 10:11 AM PST

    Hi

For FPS gaming, would this be a good build? Or should I chose something else?

    • Ryzen 5 3600
    • MSI B450 Tomahawk Max
    • Radeon RX5600XT DUAL EVO TOP 6GB
    • Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200, 16GB
    • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB

    Thanks!

Resources/guide to how I built my first gaming PC:

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 07:40 AM PST

Hey guys, I built my first PC and posted it on this sub and it blew up. Here was the post with the parts and pics if anyone is interested:

How to install windows for free—in depth and helpful video: https://youtu.be/l9GnWYKyyYo

How to build a PC, great for a lot of the basic stuff: https://youtu.be/IhX0fOUYd8Q

Always consult your manuals, but if an item such as maybe your fans or power supply didn't come with one, this site is great for finding them: https://www.manualslib.com

Try to find build tutorials with your motherboard/pc case used in them. This video helped me figure too where to plug in the smaller connectors on my motherboard. https://youtu.be/k71DeXhU-A8. That beings said your motherboard manual will be what will help you most of the time.

Installing the I/O plate is actually a lot tougher than people think and I have heard a lot of people complains about having to take apart their PC to install it properly, this video is a perfect tutorial: https://youtu.be/XAWNzd-gc3Q

After you build your PC and install all of the drivers, you should install MSI Afterburner. MSI afterburner basically shows what temperature your GPU and CPU are running, the utilization, and FPS. This was the best video I found: https://youtu.be/qykMu_hLPoQ

Remember to install your drivers, scattervolt had a decent tutorial for both NVIDIA and AMD: https://youtu.be/uDHeIx9CNxA

Looking up YouTube benchmarks are a great way to compare and see the performance you system should be putting out, this is the one I used: https://youtu.be/bTaGE4DITpo

I overclocked my CPU, search up your motherboard on YouTube and look for a guide that is using the stock cooler and a CPU with greater or the same performance. You could simply look at one of these and underclock it be be a bit more safe. Assuming you have a good enough motherboard.

Search "How to enable XMP profile on ______ motherboard" on YouTube. I was using an MSI one and used this video: https://youtu.be/IXEtf2Y9hJA. This basically makes your ram run at its advertised speeds.

Make sure that your monitor is running at its advertised Hz (ie. 60Hz, 75Hz, 144Hz), this video is helpful for windows 10: https://youtu.be/H_EeOA4nZwI

Lastly, there are helpful sub Reddit's that are there to answer your questions and provide tech support. This sub, r/pcmasterrace and r/techsupport are great places to resolve your lesser known issues you are having with your PC.

    LED lights/strips in PC

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 11:20 AM PST

    Hi there!

My boyfriend's birthday is coming up and he has been planning on getting LED lights inside his gaming PC and under his desk. I really want to suprise him for his birthday but I know nothing of building PC's. I was hoping you guys could help me out by answering a few questions.

First off, can you just put any type of LED strips in your PC? Or could that go wrong? Secondly, should I get different LED strips for his desk? Or can I just use the same one? I do know he has several Corsair products with lights in them, so does Corsair have good LED strips for PC's? I would also really appreciate if you guys could leave some suggestions for the right LED lights/strips.

Thank you so much for anyone who can help me :)

SHould I tidy up my old build for my partner or sell it and just make a new one?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 05:35 AM PST

    Hi,

Im in the midst of upgrading from my old rig, literally just waiting on the last component (hopefully my queue position for a 30 series card speeds up in the new year) and in the meantime I'm just wondering whether I should give my old PC to my girlfriend or just sell what I can from it and build her a new one.

My plan was to mount it in a new case, tidy it up a bit, remove the GPU and run on integrated as she's not a gamer, but thinking about it maybe it would be nice to have some newer, less power hungry components.

Would love some opinions on this.

    Old Rig:
    Intel i7 4770k
    GTX 660
    16GB DDR3 DUal Channel
    MSI Z87-G45
    1x 500gb Sata SSD + 2x 1tb HDD
    Corsair 850W Bronze

    Proposed new rig:

Hi Everyone! I'm planning on building a PC but I live in a humid and pretty hot area! Do you have any advice for what case and cooling I should go with? I'm going with an RTX 3080 and Ryzen 7 5800X (it's okay I'll find them somehow .) I live in Tz by the way... if that's relevant.

Not technically a PC question but I news help and no one will help me.

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 01:45 PM PST

I recently bought the parts for my pc and I'm gonna need a kick ass pair of headphones to go with it.

My main requirements are comfort over long periods of time (8+h) and comfortable while wearing glasses, preferably wireless however I'm fine with wired headphones, I would like clear bass with nice crisp highs, I don't mind if they're open or closed back however I will be using them for gaming so I believe closed back is better and finally a good mic as I will be using them in discord and for streaming.

I'm also open to buying a pair of headphones and mic separately but i don't know if that will fit in my budget which is part of the reason I'm here lmao.

I have a £200/£225 budget which I think should cover a good headset but you guys tell me.

I really appreciate any support and if there are any further questions that need to be asked, feel free

    Installing New PC Fans

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 01:44 PM PST

When I bought my case, it came with a single fan already installed on the front panel, and I added a second to the back as an exhaust, which just plugged into the motherboard with a single 3 pin connector.

I'm looking at buying some cheap white led fans to liven the look up a little bit, but all the ones I can find seem to have both a 3 pin and a 4 pin molex connector. Do these both need to be plugged in for these fans to work, or can I just get away with plugging them straight into the motherboard as I did before?

    Thanks!

Link for example of the fans I was considering: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/upHere-Airflow-Coolers-Radiators-SR12-WT3-3/dp/B0871ZMSF7/ref=sr_1_10?dchild=1&keywords=white+led+pc+fan&qid=1609105378&sr=8-10

    Does 3tb SSD exists?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 01:34 PM PST

I'm looking for replacing my 3tb HDD drive with a SSD, but when I search on Aliexpress for 3tb SSD I can't find any. The best I can find is 2tb SSD from WD or Samsung.

If 3tb SSD doesn't exist on the market (yet), I think I'll buy 2 SSDs, one being 1tb storage and other being 2tb storage, and then I'll try to figure out how to use both SSDs as one on Windows (if I can somehow merge their storages, to make Windows think I'm using one SSD rather than 2.)

It'sbecause currently I have 700gb free out of 2,72tb, and I don't want to lose anything when I make this change.

Can I buy a second cheap graphics card for a second monitor?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 01:31 PM PST

I finally built my own PC in quarentine and at that time I bought a graphics card with only one HDMI output, mostly to save money, but also because I had been working off a laptop for the better part of a decade and I thought I wouldn't ever need the luxury of a second monitor. That being said, since I've had a better PC, I've been doing more and more with it, and second monitor just fell into my lap.

I don't want to just replace my graphics card, especially with the bitcoin bubble inflating the prices, and I don't think I need anything all that powerful, as the second monitor is probably going to spend most of its life cycling between youtube and wikipedia.

So, can I just buy a second cheap video card for my second monitor? If so, any suggestions or warnings about different cards?

Wanting to build reliable mini-itx server

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 05:24 AM PST

    TL;DR Any suggestions on a low-power no-frills durable mini-itx board with PCIE?

Hey guys, am looking to build a rock solid mini-itx server with PCIE that will hopefully run for years, something akin to the old Atom boards, but with a PCIE slot. I know Asrock, Biostar, etc, but can't get any of them to last longer than 12-16 months of 24:7 operation without a CPU or other failure, whereas every one of my Atom boards are still running strong just no PCIE.

My goal is to build this sometime before March. Mainly I'm looking to play shooters like apex, valorant, and maybe some open world surival type games. Pretty much average PC gaming at 1080p to start out.

A big feature I want to have is the ability to upgrade to 3070 or 3080 when they become available more readily, to be able to play more next gen type games. That is why I went for a 750w power supply.

Really the processor and graphics card are pretty fixed and I like the case and PSU. I am uncertain if there are better options for RAM, motherboard, and hard drive. Let me know what you think
