FEDs were a severely underutilised technology that, along with SEDs, could have shaken up the technological world and influenced it for decades to come

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 08:34 PM PST

I was having a look at this previous post on the long forgotten SED technology for TV's when j came across a similar technology Sony initially produced, called FED. I'm surprised at just how good it sounded- colours/refresh rate of CRTs, energy consumption/thinness of LEDs. And according to the Wikipedia page FEDs could also be made transparent. It really is a shame Sony never followed through with this technology, it clearly sounds better than LCDs and LEDs and it could have even been a contender for OLEDs and, if developed further, become a much better technology

Why was the headphone jack removed?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 02:47 PM PST

I'm having trouble with the title, but I know why the jack itself was removed from most mobile phones, but I'm wondering why it couldn't have been the opposite way. My old iPod shuffle charges using its headphone jack, so why couldn't smartphones do the same thing?

Do you think RT cores could be 'unified' with shader cores?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 11:19 AM PST

Kinda like how Nvidia unified pixel and vertex shaders with the legendary G80 processor back in mid 2000s?

Sounds like a no brainer to me, assuming it's possible that is!

Take 3070 for example. It has just 46 RT cores, compared to whopping 5,888 "unified shaders". Cobble them all together and you'll have a massive boost in RT performance!

Anyhow, that's what I'd in mind when I took the shower today... Hope you don't mind.

Why/how do chips like M1 and Tegra get awesome gaming performance for their size?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 02:44 PM PST

I feel like AMD's rumored ARM CPUs would be perfect for next-gen consoles (PS6/Xbox next-gen) because APUs with ARM CPUs generally get awesome perf/watt.

    See:

    - Apple M1 gives you 1050 Ti-level performance with only passive cooling.

    - Just Apple chips in general.

    - Nvidia's Tegra chips in the Switch gives you base Xbox One/PS4 PS3/Xbox 360 level performance.

How much does this have to do with the CPU being ARM? How much does it have to do with the GPU cores?

Rumor is that AMD is working on ARM CPUs. If we take the ARM CPUs out of the picture and pit Apple's GPU vs RDNA2, would we get better perf/watt out of Apple's or AMD's GPU?

Meta: Videos should provide a TL;DW

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 12:57 PM PST

I tried to put the Meta flair but I don't seem to be able to, so I'll use discussion instead.

While I do understand that CC just don't make money unless people watch their videos, I think this sub should enforce people to put a TL;DW for those who can't watch the video for a multitude of reasons. Not having it means we lose the chance to start a discussion about what's in the videos!

Thanks for listening, I hope I'm not the only one who lacks the possibility to watch videos in here!

EDIT: Even though I'm saying TL;DW, I do think that any form of summary would be very much appreciated nonetheless.

Could the low performance per watt increase on the A14 be an attempt to improve device longevity?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 07:23 AM PST

I remember a little while ago Apple got in trouble because they were slowing down old iPhones.

Could the reason the A14 isn't 15-20% faster than the A13 be that they aren't pushing it as hard out of the gate?
