This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Fun fact about building PC now vs in the past.

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 06:07 AM PST

So I will build 4th PC in my life this Saturday. Last one was in 2013, second was around 2004 and first one was when I was just 13 years old in 1996 and I was helping my dad.

I was just reading forums and there were some comments from people outraged that they have to upgrade their bios in turn to use Ryzen 5000 series. "It's so convoluted. Why can't it automatically download it from network or something". Bios flashback literally requires you to stick USB drive and push a button, that's it. Everything else is mostly like plug and play.

With this thought, came the realization, that I remember this term "plug & play" from the past long gone, but mostly as "plug & pray'.

I suppose some younger "master builders" may not know, not everything worked just like that before. Hence I remembered the nightmare that was my dad's and mine build in 1996.

My dad first opposed building PC because he heard that it is super complicated. But then, Windows 95 came out and introduced this new, breakthrough thing called "Plug and play" that was supposed to make building and setting up new PC a breeze, so we went with it. In practice though...

First it wasn't much issue if you only had one drive. But if you had two or God forbid more, then you would be blessed by hours upon hours of jumper magic:

    https://www.pctechguide.com/how-to-install-a-second-hard-disk-drive/hard-drive-configuration

And your drives better be by same manufacturer and same type and also you'd have to be in possession of full documentation. If you bought used parts without manual, good luck! The internet was non existent for us back then. It was basically trial and error route while hoping that nothing would fry by accident.

Before glorious "plug and play" every device had to be more or less configured manually by settings in system files like config.sys and autoexec.bat. You had to manually type in interrupt request lines for your devices and so on. It was nightmare. BUT after "plug and play" it would become even bigger nightmare because it's possibilities were very limited. Windows couldn't access a lot of system info and settings so it did what it could mostly messing up everything else. Also it didn't recognize most of even slightly older hardware. Imagine if Windows detected your graphics card as printer and your mouse as sound card - this is the scale of complete fuckups that a person trying to build a computer would run into. Without much technical knowledge, without internet access and with lacking documentation it took us two weeks of battle to configure this PC.

But funny thing - builders that time rightfully laughed off "plug and play" hence the name "plug and pray" was coined and there was consensus that "nothing ever will be plug and play, this is too complicated and if it has to work it has to be done manually, period". But somewhere along the way it just happened. Everything now is plug and play. Yes, you may have to upgrade your drivers etc. but if you don't nothing major will happen. You just put everything in place, cables are mostly foolproof, then press power and everything just works. Well, besides these pesky one-click BIOS upgrades.

Sorry if this post seems rather pointless. This isn't rant, just a trip via memory lane. It's just admiration for such great improvement we experienced in last 25 years of computers.

Is this the new state of the market?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 08:40 AM PST

I was going to build a PC around August, but my wife and I moved and bought a house, so the 1.5k I saved up naturally went into the cost of moving, closing, buying furniture, etc.

At the time it was already hard to catch certain components in stock, but nothing like it is now. Even then, folks were saying "wait a few months to buy" and now even more folks are forced into that mentality, since stock is completely obliterated. My current plan is waiting til February or March to even start, but even that is feeling unlikely given the state of things.

Will things return to any sense of normalcy down the road you think? Or is it going to be like this for the next 6-12 months. Supply chain is obviously jacked, and there's no shortage of demand or individuals like me who are just waiting to buy when things start to settle down...if they ever do

My first ever PC build with a custom water loop included!

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 01:12 PM PST

Finally! After working for 7 months on this build I managed to get all the parts together. Watching countless of video tutorials on how to build a PC, how to make your own custom water loop, how to bend hard tubes, what components match with others, etc, etc.

After all the invested time I can say it was a great experience, somewhat of a hassle at times, for example when I was trying to get my hands on a new a graphics card or latest processor (thank you scalpers!), bending the tubes without leaving any kind of overheating marks, hiding all the cables to make it look as clean as possible... The process thought me a ton and by the end of the build everything felt familiar in a way as if I had worked on PCs for a while!

Fun fact.. I was an Apple user when I started building this.

Let me know what you think and what can be improved. Hope you guys like it!

    • Watercool Heatkiller IV Pro Water Block
    • NVIDIA RTX 3090 FE
    • 2x G Skill Trident Z Royal DDR4 Silver 32GB RAM
    • Dual Sabrent Rocket SSD PCIe 4.0 (1TB & 2TB)

    • Asus AX3000 Wireless & Bluetooth PCIe Card
    • ROG Strix 850W PSU White Edition
    • Lian Li O11 Distro Plate & Pump
    • 6x Lian Li Uni Fan SL120

    • Primochill Eximo SX White Radiator (Any recommendations for an upgrade?)
    • Thermaltake Pacific TF2 (Unfortunately not connected, won't stop beeping because it doesn't detect the water flow) **
    • Bitspower Black Sparkle Fittings

** I have contacted Thermaltake customer support a few times and they simply tell me to file for a return through their ERma form, the thing is, the form won't submit! I've tried several browsers and it doesn't work. Emails won't do the trick either since they barely respond and when they do, it's the same answer over and over.

    Custom Painted my GPU

Nothing too special, just decided to add a little bit of flair to my build and put a coat of white paint on the shroud and backplate of my Zotac 2070 Super Mini. I really like the way it turned out as I think it adds a little bit of pop to the build.

    A worthy budget GTX Card

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 07:14 AM PST

Hi guys, I'm finally ready to complete my build. For the past 5 months I have been saving money and building a budget PC. And the only thing left to buy is the Graphics Card. I'm hoping to get a GTX card. I'm from India and PC components are heavily priced. I have been browsing through Amazon and other online sites recommended by the NVIDIA website. I look forward to buying a GTX 1650 Super which is around 23490 rupees (approx $ 245), which is an Asus TUF model. But a friend of mine told me to consider a 1660 super. So I decided to buy the 1660 super and I found that I could get one from a shop in my town for around 21000 rupees ($ 285), but the product is currently Out of Stock and they don't know when it will be back in Stock. But they do have a Gigabyte GTX 1660 OC model in stock and I could get it for 19000 rupees ($ 258). So should I go with 1660 or 1650 super or 1660 super. For more than two weeks I am having a really bad time choosing a good one because I won't be able to build another one in a really long time. If you could help me find a good one, that will be great.

    Thank You.

    Ryzen 5 3600xt 230$ or Intel i5 10600kf 200$?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 07:28 AM PST

Keep in mind that b550 motherboards are ~30$ less expensive than Z490, but also that you can go with cheaper ram and overclock to 5.1ghz on the Intel side.

The prices in your country may vary, I live in South Korea. 5600x is currently 400$ lowest so it is completely out of discussion besides upgradibility.

I wanted to post this due to people saying that Intel is dead and stuff. I am a fanboy only to the wallet, and frankly, the "f" designated CPUs are excellent value, like the 10100f was 80$ for a couple of weeks. I personally feel that once prices come down and the vaccines get out, and the 5600 launches life will be good.

Do I need six or eight cores? 5600X vs 5800X

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 10:01 AM PST

I'm trying to decide whether it's worth spending £200 more for the 5800x compared to the cheaper 5600x

I'd mostly be using the pc for 1080p 60hz gaming, and work which mostly involves fairly large spreadsheets (over 1 million data points)

I'm also considering the 3800x as a potential compromise?

I'm leaning towards the 5600x, as I won't be streaming or rendering or coding or anything like that, but worried the lower core count might struggle with my spreadsheets.

    Thoughts?

Is a RTX 3070 GPU good with my current i7-4790k CPU?

My CPU and Motherboard died. What's a good replacement option short term?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 08:33 AM PST

I have an i5-2500k and was planning to upgrade to the AMD 5000 series whenever they came in stock. Unfortunately it died on me and took my mobo with it. My options seem to be pretty limited since I noticed most cpus that I'd use long term are out of stock

RTX 3080 / Ryzen 7 3700X bad performance in Modern Warfare / Warzone SOLVED SOLUTION

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 11:13 AM PST

Hey folks, I've seen a lot of other people on the internet (notably Reddit) having this issue too, so I thought I would share what I figured out.

The problem: I only got about 90-120FPS in Warzone and Multiplayer, regardless of settings, at 1440P. The game basically acted like it was CPU-bottle necked (because changing settings didn't change FPS much, and GPU usage sat at 60-70% max), but that didn't appear to be true. The CPU didn't boost, and instead sat at 2.2GHz like idle, and no single thread ever got about the mid-70%'s of usage. So I thought there was no way it was CPU-bound. I saw other people online having the same issue with the same hardware setup, saying the game is badly optimized for this hardware combination. I saw one guy who upgraded from a 3700x to a 5800x, saying that solved it. I came back to the truly CPU-bound idea when I saw someone getting slightly higher FPS who was running a mild overclock on his CPU.

The solution: put your power plan on high performance, or set a manual overclock. For whatever reason, every other game gets the 3700X and other Ryzen 3000's to boost up to full speeds even in low power mode, but not Warzone. Warzone wants more CPU but apparently won't ask for it. If you get one core set to like 4.2GHz and another set to 4-4.1, and the rest on whatever, you'll be set. Or, leave CPU on auto or a boosted auto in Ryzen Master (like precision boost overdrive), and go to high performance mode in Windows.

A lot of us have had our Ryzen 3000's on low power to solve the weirdly hot/fast/high power they sometimes idle at, but you can't in Warzone. FYI. I hope this helps someone.

New MSI 3060ti GPU giving No Display Signal

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 08:29 AM PST

I installed a new MSI RTX3060ti Trio Gaming GPU yesterday into my ASRock x370 Killer SLI/ac, replacing a GTX 1070 card.

My PSU is a Corsair CX650M, and I connected the (2) 8 pin power connections with one daisy chained 6+2 cable.

It's connected to my monitor with a display port cable.

It powered on, I installed the newest driver, and then used the computer for about two hours. It worked for gaming without shutting off or overheating or anything. I left and came back to find the display was receiving no signal.

I tried to restart it (unplug, power off PSU, etc) and still no signal. The LEDs were working, but the fans didn't start up like they typically do when the pc powers on.

I replaced the 3060ti with my old 1070 (in the same PCIe slot), and the signal issue went away.

My CPU is an AMD ryzen 7 with no onboard graphics, so I can't diagnose the card while it's plugged in, to get any display at all I have to use my 1070.

    Since then I have

    • updated the BIOS on my motherboard to the most recent available
    • Run the computer with both graphics cards plugged in, but my pc only recognizes the 1070.
    • Done a clean install of the nvidia driver (but with the 1070 plugged in so I'm not sure if that would do anything)
    • Installed AMD vga all in one (because the most recent BIOS requires it according to the ASRock website)
    • Manually changed the PCIe from Auto to Gen 3 in the BIOS
    • Tried connecting through HDMI
    • Using two separate cables from the PSU to the two power slots on the 3060ti

I'm still getting no signal from the 3060, and before I return the card for a new one is there anything else I can try?

    Thanks.

Looking for a case with good airflow that fits at least two additional 140mm fans, a 320 mm GPU and a Noctua NH-D15S

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 01:38 PM PST

It would be nice if it also had pre installed frontal fans and space for a top fan (140mm).

Edit: To be precise, the GPU is 320 x 129 x 55 mm. It shouldn't be toooooo expensive. Let's say around 150€. If it's a bit more expensive, that's okay, too.

Edit 2: Also, I'm aircooling, so an open design would be good.

    Running Windows 10

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I have everything assembled and booted, windows installed and surprisingly problem free considering I've never done this before.. however I'm having trouble with one of my M.2 SSD that I intended to use purely as storage. I've booted to the 1 TB QLC drive but I can't find the 2TB TLC drive in Disk Management. I can see the drive in BIOS and in Device Manager, and it's driver is up to date. I understand it needs to be formatted but it isn't showing up as unused space.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I updated the mobo from F2 to F5b and checked the driver. I also tried third party partitioning software, which also couldn't locate it.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I saw a few similar issues posted, but couldn't find any reason other than a bad board or bad SSD, so I'm hoping to find it's a software issue.

EDIT: It might also be worth mentioning that this board has three M.2 slots: M2A holds the 1TB boot drive, M2M holds the 2 TB drive and M2P is not used as the board claims this slot is "future use".

    3060ti build - help is needed :D

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 09:33 AM PST

So I recently started looking into building a PC for myself, as my dad's prebuilt is getting a bit old.

I know now is a really bad time to be building a PC, but I came upon a 3060 ti by chance and ordered it on a whim. :/

As the CPU supply is still pretty bad out here (Switzerland) I knew I wouldn't be able to get the new gen from AMD for another two months or so. Therefore I ordered the AMD 5 3600 as I didn't know what else to order and I am planning to upgrade later on anyways.

Yesterday I was informed that my CPU will not arrive for another month or two, while the GPU and the motherboard have already arrived. I am now wondering whether I should cancel my order and order the AMD Ryzen 5 2600X instead for now until I can upgrade to the 5600X.

Which brings me to my question -> Will my planned system still be able to run decently enough with the 5 2600X instead of the 5 3600?

Also I did my best to check the other parts compatibility so far and I think it's fine, but I'm not sure.

parts list (only the GPU and mobo are final choices so far):https://de.pcpartpicker.com/user/rosesaremagenta/saved/qQMPXL

    Thanks in advance :D

Edit: This post is pretty much irrelevant now, the CPU (5 3600) will be shipped the day after tomorrow (yeeeeyyyyy) But I'm still open for suggestions on the other components. :D
