This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

What do you think about Nvidia's email to Hardware Unboxing?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 08:39 AM PST

In case you missed it, Nvidia decided to stop sending Hardware Unboxing review copies of GPU's because they didn't focus on ray tracing enough. Linus Sebastian says it is a dangerous precedent in limiting the press. What are your thoughts?

    5900X + RTX3080Ti for my teen son

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 06:42 AM PST

Hey everybody I'm currently building a pc for my 19 year old son who is going to college as a gift for his succes and making me proud. Sorry for my english in advance as its not my main language. So there isn't a spesific budget, I just want to build what is appropriately best. I believ 2500$ will suffice. He is into overcloking in a moderate way, maybe can expand his interest to a more advanced level and the only other thing he'll probably do with this PC is heavy gaming, maybe some VR in the future and basic college tasks etc.

This is the current build. I have a few questions regarding the build.

1-Should I go for 16 or 32GB if there is the budget? I'm aware CL16 3600 is the current sweet spot, however is there better configuration out there without considering the price? I know it is not a big deal however I really want to get the best RAM out there, considering OC performance. I'm really lost with all these dies and different brands. Patriot Viper 4400mhz Cl19 seemed decent though.

2-I'm probably going to wait for the 3080Ti to at least be released so that I can decide between that and the 3080, would the 3090 be a stupid choice? Is 850W going to be enough for 3080Ti / 3080 / 3090 + 5900X?

3-Would you recommend any other alternatives for the PSU?

4-I'm also very stuck between the DH15 Chromax and the Arctic Liquid Freezer. Any suggestions?

5-Is the Meshify C big enough even for a 3090 or should I go for something else like the Meshify S2?

6-He's an somewhat of an audophile and although I'm aware an external dac would be a better solution, I went for the X570 Aorus Master because of the Sabre DAC. I'm aware that its overkill however it seemed like the only reasonable thing to upgrade with the remaning budget. I was considering the B550 Aorus Master previously, the X570 Unify and the X570 Crosshair VIII Hero also seems like great options, how do they compare? What should I pick for a motherboard in general?

After (almost) a terrible year, although my country is having the easiest time, I decided to go all out and go myself a good pc.

It's not the finished tho, the monitors and everything are still on the way home but basically everything is bought and done!

Would love to hear your opinion on this. I'm saving a spot for a figurine, right to the mainboard, maybe Santa Alter Saber.

First build complete! Can't believe I did this :)

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 10:13 AM PST

Just wanted to share my first PC build! Before this, I was running games off my 4-year old Dell XPS 15 9550 laptop, and I can't express how much of an upgrade this is lol.

It took weeks of research/learning since I have no prior experience or knowledge about this stuff. This subreddit was extremely useful and literally helped answer all of my questions, so thanks to all of you!

The build itself took me ~9 hours, including properly documenting all the warranties, organizing boxes/manuals, and booting up the computer with Windows for the first time. I made the classic mistake of freaking out when my fans didn't turn on after I flipped the PSU switch... I didn't realize I also have to power up the PC itself on the case LOL. But after that, I watched the fans and lights turn on and it was an incredible feeling. I still cannot believe I'm typing this on something I built! I've been using it for gaming and everyday use for ~1 week now, and I've had absolutely no issues!

    Pic: https://imgur.com/a/AKyE4MA

Specs/Parts: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/tC4R4d (includes final paid prices with tax)

    • CPU: Intel i5 10400
    • GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1660Ti Gaming X
    • MoBo: MSI MPG Z490 Gaming Edge WiFi ATX
    • RAM: Silicon Power XPOWER Turbine 32GB (2x16) 3200 CL16
    • SSD: Intel 665p 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME SSD
    • CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black
    • Case: Fractal Design Meshify C
    • PSU: Cooler Master MWE Gold 750W FullMod

    Other notes:

    • I know I spent a bit more than I needed to for my specs, but I wanted to make my components as future-proof as possible for me (specifically the Z490 MoBo, 32GB RAM, CPU Cooler, and 750W PSU). Overall, I'm really happy that I was able to prioritize this while keeping the cost at $1100.
    • I care very little about RGB (plus the case has a tinted side panel) so I didn't spend any more on that.

Overall, this is a project that I will cherish (and use) for so many years to come! I couldn't be more happy and proud of the result. I know this process can be intimidating for new builders, but trust me, I was in your shoes ~1 month ago! Feel free to comment with any questions or DM me! I'd love to help out. Happy building :)

From console to PC gaming (my first build)

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 07:00 AM PST

    Hi all,

I just wanted to share my first ever PC build.

For the past 15 years I have been a console gamer, always buying both PS and Xbox consoles. With the latest consoles being somewhat underwhelming to me, I thought now was a good chance to turn to the dark side.

Amazingly, the build went very smoothly (probably due to the months I spent researching...). The only issues I had were very minor, e.g. struggling to get the mobo holes to line up with the standoffs, installing the AIO (needed 3 hands), etc.

    Pics: https://imgur.com/a/XR1HcG7

    Specs:

    • CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X

    • GPU: MSI RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio

    • AIO: Arctic Liquid Freezer II 280mm

    • Motherboard: MSI B550 Gaming Edge Wifi

    • RAM: Crucial Ballistix 32GB (2x16) 3600 C16 (Dual rank)

    • SSD: 2TB Adata XPG SX8200 Pro

    • Case: Lian Li Lancool II Mesh (Performance)

    • PSU: Corsair RMx 850W

    • Monitor(s): Dell S2721DGF (and an LG 4K60 monitor for single player games)

PS. I have zero interest in RGB (I know my GPU has a tiny bit), and tried to put all my money into performance :p

    Thanks for reading!

    Prebuilt vs Custom

Is it worth going prebuilt at the moment since almost all separate parts are insanely inflated? Wanted to know some of the communities thoughts, and If prebuilt is better right now what are some good sites you guys recommend to go through. Looking for around $600

What a year, went from not knowing how to build a PC to install a 3rd party cooler on my 5700xt

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 07:46 AM PST

Started 2020 with an outdated pc. After reading here I felt confident enough to pull the trigger. And it's really a big hole you can fall into.

Only bought graphics, motherboard and cpu in February.

My old case was designed for micro atx, so I had to get a new one.

After that I noticed that I need a new PSU so I got that aswell.

My PC was too loud, so I had to replace the CPU fan.

It was still too loud so I got more case fans.

Later that year I thought about upgrading my Ram so I got it aswell and I realised that I got a shitty case, so I got a new one.

Now with the glass panel I wanted some fancy lights, so I replaced the fans.

Last but not least, my graphic card was still too fucking loud (msi evoke 5700xt, gonna avoid them for now) and I bought a third party cooling solution. I was really scared if I could do it, but I did it and now after 10 months it finally feels like everything is done.

Now with Ray tracing etc I could start over again, but I think I am settled for now and will buy a new CPU and GPU but not for a year at least.

I made it a long way and this community is really helpful and amazing and I think I will stay here for a long time.

I accidentally installed Noctua fans on a Nhd-15 backwards and ran it for years

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 02:52 AM PST

Title. I've finally started to have temperature problems with super intensive games like the recent cyberpunk. I decided to clean some dust out and much to my horror noticed that for years I have been running fans in the wrong direction, they line up directly with the exhaust fan in the case and have all this time diligently managed to keep the case cool until this point. So i guess this is a PSA style post, both for god damn check that the fans are in the right direction and 2, noctua run so well that you can have them in backwards and they'l still mostly work.

Is 550w psu enough for a 3060 ti gpu?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 01:38 PM PST

My psu is a tx 550m corsair power supply but nvidia recommends 600w, but since it's only rated at 200w and i don't have a system that would eat a lot of power other than the gpu i think it may be possible??

Wondering if I screwed up my MB. I managed to scratch it with a screwdriver, and now it doesn't turn on.

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 07:23 AM PST

I was installing an AiO and changing out my cables with Cablemod. In the process I wasn't able to open the little latch for the GPU slot, and in my stupidity tried to open it with a screwdriver. It slipped and I sctratched the board a bit.

Now the MB doesn't light up at all when plugging in and turning on the PSU, and the pc naturally won't turn on. This is what the scratch looks like: https://i.imgur.com/ZM9DdnP.jpg

I'm wondering if anybody know if that scratch is enough to kill the MB or if I might have screwed something else up in the process. I tried reseating the 24-pin connector on both the MB and PSU.

Edit: Seems my worst fear was true, thanks for the answers

Cpu not going all the way down, no bent pins

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 02:04 PM PST

I am trying to install my ryzen 7 3700x into my asus rog strix b550 f wifi mobo, and I opened the socket arm, and the cpu lines up and falls into the socket, but one side seems to bottom out before going all the way into the mobo. This is entirely speculation, but it seems like there might be something in the socket hole that is preventing the cpu from dropping fully down. I aligned the gold triangle on the cpu with the triangle on the socket and I repeat, there is no bent pins. This is my first build, and of course the literal first thing I do is not working. I did not push it in nor touch the gold pins.

    https://imgur.com/a/GXJocQg

In the second or third picture, it shows the cpu is lined up with the holes on the socket and it falls into place but not all the way down so it is flush. I can still see the sides of the gold pins when the cpu is in the socket. I also tried to wiggle it slightly but it did not work.

AMD first timer here. Stock permitted, I'm hoping to get this new build together. The 5800x is just a placeholder while I cross my fingers for a 5700x at $400*.

The ram choice is based on trying to achieve that 4 ranks boost with Zen 3 that I saw on GN, while also hitting a price to performance that I felt good about. There was a heavily upvoted comment on the video that explains how it works, hopefully I understood it.. Edit: https://youtu.be/-UkGu6A-6sQ

I haven't studied up on PSUs enough just yet but I think I saw somewhere that I'll need 750w or higher with the 6800xt. Not sure who has the high quality PSU these days. I just had a cooler master 650 last me 6 years of constant use before dying, idk if that's good but iirc it was very cheap.

The SSD and case were recent birthday gifts, so I already have them. As well as 6 of the lian li fans they just released to match the galahad, not sure if I need some kind of rgb controller, never had rgb before.

If you read all of this, thank you. Can anyone see anything not to like here? I've pretty much hit my budget dead on. This will be for gaming and light Blender use.

    Edit: Fixed some craziness.

Is it worth it to build a budget pc?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 01:27 PM PST

I'm new to the idea of building a PC and I'm curious if building something entry level is worth it?

I assume you can't play any bigger game like cyberpunk2077 without having the higher end graphics cards and what not.

I initially thought of building a pc because I started playing LoL with a friend that I play all sorts of game with on Xbox. But it's an iMac that I'm playing on and it's all kinda of annoying so I started looking at computer options and now I'm dead set on building a gaming pc that can handle a little goPro editing on the side.

I will be waiting til the parts shortage and craziness settles down a bit and I can get what I want without clawing my way through the doors of micro center to land a decent CPU and since I'm waiting I figured I will Probly save up for a better computer than entry level but I'm just wondering what people think.

Obviously I'm playing on Xbox now so I can play anything really and don't know the difference, whereas a computer I'll be able to know the difference and be able to upgrade.

Pardon my ADHD formatting I hope I got my question across without confusing everyone. I'll do better in the comments I'm sure.

Idk what to do about Cyberpunk performance anymore.

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 08:20 AM PST

I bought a RTX 3060 ti just for the game, my other components were pretty much trash, so I had to change them to not bottleneck the GPU, but even after changing them it seems is not enough, the CPU usage at the game is 80% (at least not at 100% like before) and the GPU remains at 40%, doesn't matter if I go with minimum graphics or ultra settings, I get only 30 fps or fewer.

    • OS - Windows 10 X64
    • CPU model - Intel Core I5-10400 2.90 GhZ, 8Gb RAM DDR4
    • Video Card model - RTX 3060 Ti Eagle OC 8GB
    • MotherBoard - H410M-D Micro ATX LGA1200 Motherboard
    • Power Supply - Cooler Master Elite V3 600W

By the requisites they post about the game, with this CPU and GPU I would have to play minimum on high 60 fps.

I would really appreciate some help and thanks for reading the post.

SO my pc (i3 6100, gtx 1060, 8gb ram) is old. I dont know if i should upgrade this one or get a new. My budget is low so i would prefer upgrading but it is really old. It feels like it get "tired" after some hours. Games start to lag and stuff. Could that be a cpu problem or is it because its an old ass pc in general??

    Budget cpu/apu

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 10:02 AM PST

In terms of cost to performance, is there a better combination of an AM4 cpu/gpu than a 3400g?

Obviously any real discrete gpu outplays the Vega 11- but say that discrete gpu costs $100, then that's $100 less for cpu performance

Importance of sequential write for an OS drive?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 08:25 AM PST

I'm planning to get two M.2 drives, one for my OS and one for my files. I've been eyeing a Samsung 980 Pro 250GB for the OS, and just today noticed that the 500GB model has an 87% faster sequential write speed than the 250GB model for about 67% more up-front cost.

Is this going to be at all noticeable if I were to upgrade? Or would the OS drive not really benefit from the increase to sequential writes? I'd imagine this would help when installing programs, but I'm honestly not sure. I wouldn't mind spending a bit more on a larger and faster drive if it'll make a difference, but I don't want to feel pressured by an almost 90% uplift in sequential writes if an OS drive never relies on that.

For reference, I generally do a mix of CAD design work and occasional gaming, so if CAD would benefit from the extra write speed somehow that does matter to me.

My pc wont boot into windows

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 01:34 PM PST

My build has been running great for a while. I swapped mobos yesterday, and there has been no issues at all, including multihour gaming sessions. Today, I flicked the psu switch off, then on, and it wouldn't boot. All times the lighting turns on and all fans spin (gpu, cpu, psu, case fans). However, it never boots to windows, and out of 20 boots 2 have gotten to american megatrends and bios. However, when you press save and exit in bios, it goes back to the problem. The problem is when you press the power button, the fans spin and everything lights up, but the peripherals nor monitor show light up and show up at all. Tried these with another pc as well, nothing wrong. I have tried reseating ram, cmos, every possible power combination. What is wrong?

Best Chipset for Ryzen 5 5600x.

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 01:22 PM PST

So, I am almost complete with my parts list for my first build. Now I need to choose a motherboard. I've done my research and know that I'm going to have to flash my bios to make my B550 motherboard compatible with the newer CPUs. The problem is; since this is my first build I don't have a previous gen AMD cpu to install to flash my bios. Would it be easier to just get an x570 motherboard or looking for a B550 with a flash BIOS button on the IO
