    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Story time: I went through an excruciatingly painful trip to acquire a 3090!

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 12:45 PM PST

Monday night I was feeling glum I couldn't get in on the cyber action when lo and behold, I manifested a 3090 into existence. So I was talking to this guy & found out he worked at a Best Buy. He managed to cop 3090s to sell at MSRP, receipt included, so that bots wouldn't get em. Problem is he lived like 3 hours away. I only sort of have a car but I do have two bikes. I didn't have time to find a friend to adventure with, I had to act quick. I rode my bike 3 hours to hopefully not get robbed in the freezing cold. On the way I stopped at the bank for cash. The teller asked if I was getting a vehicle. His face when I said it was for a graphics card was priceless. We were supposed to meet at a Best Buy and I got there like 40 mins late. The sun had set by now. It was so dark and I was kind of anxious but this guy really put me at ease. This gentle xmas angel was legit. The ride back was excrusiatingly brutal though. I stopped a couple times but it didn't matter. I was a block of ice in the howling wind. I was practically in shock when I got home. I was uncontrolably shaking and wrapped myself in as many dry blankets as I could. (a hot bath was tempting but it would have been too much). Despite the struggle it was so worth it. Over the next few days I upgraded my build to forge a raytracing, ultra, psycho lighting, cyberpunk machine. As awesome as the game is, sometimes it's the experience of a good build that is the real rush.

Not all rgb is created equal.

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 07:15 PM PST

I've recently been learning about how different rgb types work and I thought I had it all figured out. 4 pin is non addressable rgb and 3 pin is addressable. 4 pin being 12v and 3 pin being 5v.

Using my newfound rgb knowledge, I told my friend that it would be fine to plug in his 4 pin rgb strip that he got from Walmart years ago into the 4 pin rgb header on his motherboard. Once he got it set up he noted how extremely bright it seemed, and how extremely hot it was to the touch.

I told him it's probably fine after I read that some rgb strips can run pretty hot. He said it got to the point where it was literally too hot to touch and decided to unplug it. Upon inspecting the rgb strip it was clearly labeled "5v" on one of the connectors.

So moral of the story - 4 Pin isn't always 12v and 3 Pin isn't always 5v. Although for the most part it seems to be. Hopefully I can save someone from making the same mistake, unless everyone already knows this and I just look stupid for posting.

Finally, after 4 months of trying to get all the parts and researching on how to build a pc . all the headaches finally paid off ! Thank you to everyone on here for all the tips and pointers! Also at r/buildapcsales . I would of probably destroyed all my parts if it wasn't for you guys ! It was so satisfying when I pressed the power button and everyone just worked... somehow . I think cause plugging in the cables and knowing which cable goes where was the hardest thing for me and also cable management! Now i have more confidence to add/remove/upgrade later down the line without fearing that i would break something. Thanks again and happy holidays!

My first ever build went off without a hitch! (Ghost S1, 5600X and 6800)

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 07:05 AM PST

Phew! That moment before you POST for the first time is not something I want to experience in quite a while - but it worked!

Long story short: I bought a Ghost S1 MK3 a couple of months ago, intent on going SFF for my first build. Once I invested in that elusive beast, the hunt began for suitable components.

One grueling product launch at a time, I managed to get my hands on a new CPU and GPU from AMD. From there on out it was smooth sailing all the way. Full list of components below!

    Case: Ghost S1 MK3

Storage: Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 1TB (Slightly overkill, was very drunk when I bought this.)

    PSU: Corsair SF600 600W 80+ Platinum

    RAM: Corsair 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3600MHz CL18 Vengeance LPX AMD

Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix B550-I GAMING

    GPU: Radeon RX 6800 16GB

    CPU: Ryzen 5 5600X

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L12 Ghost S1 Edition

Case fan: Noctua NF-A12x15 PWM Premium 120mm

Only picture I took during building

Final build landed around $2000 which was slightly more than I had planned for initially. I opted for a single exhaust fan under the PSU, which took some creative cable management to get going. I might go for a medium tophat and two more fans later on, but I'm happy with noise/thermals right now.

Currently playing Cyberpunk 2077 along with the rest of you and everything's butter smooth! Despite this being a shit year in many ways, I'm giddy right now.

Can someone explain to me why it says 100% of my cpu is being utilized on task manager 24/7

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 05:27 AM PST

It's been doing this since about a month ago and I have reset my machine and wiped the drives and everything. The other application I have open measuring the system stuff is Xbox game bar. It says that my cpu isn't being fully used in resources but on performance it does.Usually when I don't have any applications open or running it's WMI provider host hogging all of the cpu usage. I feel as if it is a just a measuring error or something because my computer doesn't feel any slower nor am I losing FPS. I have a core i5 9600k btw. Thanks to all if you can help or just for reading this

Is it normal to see sometimes the pixel grid on a 24g2u/bk ?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 09:42 AM PST

Hi everyone. I just bought this monitor as my previous one was an old Samsung screen from 15 years ago.

I noticed that when colors are changing quickly (for example in a game I look at the ground and then quickly at the sky), for a very short time I can see the pixel grid. In the sense that I can see each pixel slightly contourned by a black line. Is this normal for this screen?

    Thanks

HELP! RX 5700 XT Mech OC

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 10:13 AM PST

Hi there! if anyone out there could help me I would really appreciate it.

Recently I won a PC, yes I won a PC, the specs are:

    - Ryzen 7 3700x

    -RX 5700 XT mech OC

    - Gigabyte b450m ds3h

    -XPG gammix D30 (2x8GB-3200Mhz)

    - Masterliquid ML240L RGB

    -SSD M.2 256 GB

    -HHD 1TB

    -Monitor HP22x 144hz/1ms

The problem starts when I try playing fortnite and it doesn't run as smooth as I guess it should, I play on 1920x1080 resolution, low settings (the graphics are the only thing that are high), but even though I have so many stutters and fps drops in game. I tried moving the GPU settings in the AMD software, I moved the frequency and voltage for the GPU and it helped, well............not really because even though I moved those settings I still have the sttuters and some fps drops (it helped but not as much as I need it), I have the frequency at 1800MHz and the voltage at 990 mV, also the VRAM is adjusted at 1850 Mhz, I just want to play as smooth as posible but I don't realy know how, I'm pretty new to the PC master race and don't know much about it, I've been trying to do my homewok, but man, this is hard, so if there is anyone out there who could help solving this problem I would appreciate it, I've tried everything, but still no bueno.

How’s my budget MINI ITX Build?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 09:41 AM PST

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jjf6qp

$420 without case and GPU. Starter PC for a youngster.

What are you thoughts on this build? This is for my younger cousin (6 years old) who browses the web and school, eta. Also she's into gaming, nothing demanding and nothing integrated GPU cant handle. Her parents wanted to keep the cost low for now so I didn't include anything than she needs at the moment.

This build is not meant to be a gaming pc at the moment meaning theres a lot room for upgrades to be converted to one. Which is why I chose a 650 watt PSU. Also, Mini ITX to keep it small, compact and easy to transport. I left the case because I haven't found or settle on a nice SFF case that is below $100.

    Good chair under £150 / $150.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 09:26 AM PST

So I know this might not be the best chat to post this but you guys have helped me a lot in the past before

So currently I'm using a gaming chair but the racing chair style is hurting me and I barley have any leg room

So I've seen a lot of office chairs being mesh. I always though mesh was stereotypically very uncomfortable. That's why I have always had leather or faux leather.

Any suggestions are much appreciated, and if anyone does have a mesh chair, how comfy really are they

Finally Finished My First Ever Build!

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 10:46 PM PST

It is just past 12:45AM in South Texas on December 11th, 2020 and I can officially say I have built my very first PC.

I genuinely could not have done it without the help of this amazing subreddit and of course the countless amount of time spent researching and watching videos and how-to's and reading guides and reviews. Thank you guys so much for the help, the suggestions, the opinions, the experience etc. it has made this admittedly still kinda nerve-wracking experience alot smoother than otherwise.

I'm a lifetime console player and decided 2020 was the year to make the leap. I was always kinda nervous about building my own PC, I didn't wanna mess something up and I didn't know anything about specs. I still will eventually end up getting new gen consoles I'm sure (I gotta have that Spider-Man running at top notch on a Ps5) but I'm sure this build will hold me over for quite some time.

To get into the specs: -Ryzen 5 3600 w/ stock CPU cooler for now

-MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus mobo

    -G.Skill Ripjaw 16 GB 3600 MHz RAM

-500GB WD Blue NVMe SSD -Seagate Barracuda 2TB HDD

-Nvidia GeForce RTX Founder's Edition 3060 Ti

    -EVGA Supernova 650w PSU

-I chose the LianLi Lancool II case in black

-Some pretty inexpensive Logitech keyboard and mouse peripherals

    -Gigabyte G32QC 32" 165Hz curved monitor

Peep the fairly basic setup here

I am SO stoked to start my journey on this bad boy tomorrow with Cyberpunk.

Any feedback is appreciated even though I know there's not much lighting going on inside the PC case. Don't worry I'm working on getting it lit up just a tad more, don't wanna overdue it.

Got a 800 work stipend to upgrade Home Office - Best use of money to update?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 08:48 AM PST

    Hiya Folks!

Work issued me 800$ in credit to be used to improve my home office setup. I checked with my boss and he said I could use the fund to upgrade my PC. I haven't had to upgrade in a while now, so I haven't kept up. Requirements aren't hardcore. Dual 1440p monitors, and I'd like to aim for 60FPS for AAA games (currently Cyberpunk).

    My current build:

    • CPU : Ryzen 5 2600
    • MOBO : ROG-STRIX-B350-F
    • GPU : RTX 2060S (MSI)
    • RAM : 16GB of DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400 (G.Flare)
    • SSD : 1TB NVME (Samsung)

My initial thought is that my CPU and MOBO could use the most love here. Would probably have to upgrade the RAM too. But what to?

    Thanks!

    Question regarding B550 / X570 motherboards and NVMEs ?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 08:18 AM PST

    Hi Everyone

There are two boards i would like to buy depending on if i buy a 3600 or 5600x:

Gigabyte B550 Aorus Pro AC or ASRock X570 Steel Legend

The B550 has 3 NVME slots and one of them when used will not affect the gpu lanes however if you place an nvme in one or both of the other two slots, it will effect the gpu.

The x570 however does not have this issue, and you can use any many as you need ? in terms of available NVME slots and not effecting the x16 lanes used for the gpu.

    Thank you,

Should I get an intel core i7-9700k + aftermarket cooler for $240 or ryzen 5 3600 for $250?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 07:30 AM PST

I'm strongly leaning towards getting the intel cpu now since they are on sale for $200 in microcenter. Aside from the fact that the intel processors will perform better, the intel cpu also has integrated graphics so I can still use it without a dedicated gpu. But on the other hand, it seems like the motherboards for the ryzen processors are better. Like the b550 will have guaranteed zen 4 upgrades while the intel z390 is stuck with 9th generation max. But at the same time, I don't want to upgrade any parts (besides the gpu) for ideally 6-7 years and by then, I'll have to get a new motherboard anyway for the latest ryzen/intel processors, so I'm still thinking the intel is worth it. What do you all think is the best option?

    Weird issues with CPU upgrade

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 09:32 AM PST

Hey all, I built my second PC slowly this year and it's been running well. I had gotten a cheap Ryzen 5 2600 to use while I waited for new chips to drop but I didn't expect demand to be so high. I decided yesterday to just get a 3900x since Microcenter had a good deal on them and I was tired of the hassle of getting the new series.

I updated the bios for my MSI x570 Meg Ace mobo and popped the new chip in. On startup everything turned on but it just sat there with a 00 mobo error code. I tried popping in the old chip, PC started just fine. After trying swapping then a few times I went to Microcenter where a super helpful rep was able to open the box for another 3900x chip to try - same 00 error code.

The rep believed it was my motherboard and asked his manager if I could swap out a defective mobo 5 months later. Surprisingly they said yes (I think they didn't want me to return the 3900x) and I went home to install a ROG Strix X570 E Gaming mobo, and returned the MSI board.

Upon install, the 2600 chip gets a 02 error code with no display and the 3900X STILL gets 00 error codes and won't load. I have another appointment set up but I figured I'd ask if anyone had any ideas as to what the issue is.

Specs: Windows 10 64 bit, Ryzen 2600/3900X, Rog Strix X570 E motherboard, MSI Nvidia 3080 Tri Gaming. 32 GB corsair RAM.

I was ripping my hair out trying to figure out why the pc I just built didn't POST - as it turns out, 5600x doesn't have an igpu...

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 02:07 PM PST

Since I wasn't able to buy a GPU (guess why...) yet, I though: Let's build everything else up already, I can just use the integrated graphics until my 3080 is here, at least I'll be able to install windows already, update my bios etc.

So I went ahead, plugged everything in, but the PC didn't POST. The white "vga led" was lighting up and I thought I had accidentally blitzed my mobo while building etc.

Until today, I've always had intel CPUs, which come with igpus, and since my b550 motherboard has a displayport and hdmi port, it was just completely natural to me, that they'd just work.

In case you're reading this, having the same issue - hope that helps.

Antec Fusion Reborn (not as an HTPC), suggestions welcome!

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 10:41 AM PST

Hi there, I've got an Antec Fusion V2 430 which I'm looking to breathe some life back to.

I've owned it from new and built it up about 13 years ago with a juicy Athlon XP. Since then, it has been in the garage gathering dust.

Pictures as is (how's that for cable management!):

    https://imgur.com/gallery/6r0OrQA

    Aim of build:

    • to be a functional mid-range machine, mainly for productivity, streaming of music performances to twitch, some dev, no gaming (might change my mind here). Want it to be an actual computer and not a low power HTPC
    • to have a bit of aesthetic internally (poss planning to replace lid with acrylic at some point
    • on aesthetic point, I'm aiming for a black/silver/metal theme so not looking for coloured RGb. Although might do some light touch rgb in terms of monochrome, like perhaps rgb ram and one or two fans. This point though is purely nice to have
    • to use the case as is, I.e. no dremel action, but obviously all parts up for being changed

I've started the purchasing and have got this so far, to be delivered in the next week:

    Mobo: MSI B450M MORTAR MAX

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 3500X

CPU Cooler: Scythe Big Shuriken 3

    RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX Black, 3200, CAS 16

    PSU: Seasonic Prime GX-650W

    SSD: Samsung 970 Evo 1TB M2/2280

    Case Fans: 2 x 120mm Noctua NF-P12 Redux

Optical drive: old DVDrw drive going in for fun

    GPU: ?

Any thoughts on the above? I've been back and forth about cpu cooling. Have seen people from years ago use the Noctua C14s with the fan on the bottom. Also seen the bequiet Shadow Rock TF2. Settle on the Big Shuriken for now, but any other suggestions welcome. Although physically could fit a 100/110mm cooler in there, think I need to stick with <70mm for airflow above?

Also on cooling- I believe the two 120mm fans at the right are exhaust fans, the Antec stock ones will be replaced by the Noctua ones. I've also seen people put an 80mm (?) fan at the back... see the grill on back panel above the I/O panel and behind the CPU . I assume that fan would be an intake for air to go over cpu then the fans at right do the extraction?

Someone else on YouTube reversed the two right fans to be intakes, but not sure that's the right thing to do. Thoughts again welcome here.

I'm not sure how stressed the machine will get so I think the scythe will do great.

Big question is GPU - I'm length restricted (fnar fnar), and have about 240mm to play with. There are a few cards around 228mm that will fit that way, and I think I have about 111/112mm to play with height wise.

For the pimp/aesthetic factor I have my eye on the Nvidia RTX 2060 Super Founders Edition- just for that sleek metal look, but realise this is overkill. Any suggestions of metal/futuristic (not g4m3r type) cards appreciated...

Think of the build like trying to build a high end hifi....so shiny metal bits like the 1970s.

I'll keep you updated as I go through the build - first step is to to clean and gut!

Hey y'all! I'm very new to pc building and after lots of research and many many reddit posts I've made this build. Anything you would change? I'm gonna try to buy certain parts when the price is lower so I would want to make sure that everything is good because it will take awhile for me to get hold of a 3060 ti. Also, about the 3060 ti, is it worth it over the 3070? I've heard arguments both ways. Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Is my motherboard faulty?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 12:39 PM PST

So I just finished building my first PC. At first everything went well and there were no problems. The system posted, all of my components were recognised and my temps were fine. I was playing games, doing everything as normal until about a week later. I think I was just scrolling reddit and talking to some friends on discord and then discord crashed and the wallpapers on my desktop looked really bad like the files had been corrupted.

I shut down my PC, restarted it and then it pretty much hasn't worked properly since then and I got a blue screen later on as well, it boots to windows fine but nothing else works properly, most applications crash or freeze and some of the graphics start to look corrupted (sometimes the graphics are fine, its mostly applications not working). I tried reinstalling windows at first and that didn't help either.

After doing some research, it seemed that all the problems I was having were pointing to faulty RAM. I ran the Windows Memory Diagnostics tool on both sticks together and then individually and it found no errors every time. I then got another pair of RAM sticks to try them but I'm still having the same issues.

So since both sets of new RAM sticks are acting the same way, could this mean that the DIMM slots on my motherboard are the problem or is it a different component entirely causing the problem? Any help would be much appreciated.
