This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Appreciation post for the hardowrking people on this sub!

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 03:58 AM PST

I just feel like I should thank each and every person on this sub, since you all have helped me so much accomplish the dream I've had since I was a little kid.

A year and a half ago I was really scared of computing, I really wanted to fulfill my wish of playing all the games I wanted to experience without having to care on what platform they were on or without having to care about the price (since consoles LOVE not dropping prices below 35$ and I can't spend that kind of money). But I was scared of all of the implications it meant to build a PC, and I didn't want to buy a prebuilt one since they were too expensive. I was scared of breaking something, of choosing the wrong parts, of wasting all the money I had been saving for 5 years.

But when I encountered this sub, everything changed for me. You all showed me that computing is not a wizard's trait, and that I too could learn how to do it without much problem. Your advice helped me differentiate between good parts and bad parts, it helped me understand how to build a long lasting pc. And what's best, you helped me build my first pc with an incredible budget. With no more than 400$ (and some spare parts I could use from some pc's that my workplace was throwing out), we managed to pull of a PC that run almost every game in mid at 60FPS.

I felt like a kid again, playing GTA V with my friends again, playing classics like Fallout, Bioshock and DOOM and also being capable of playing competitively some games like Rainbow Six and CSGO. You can't even begin to comprehend how much it also helped me to keep my studies afloat during quarantine, thanks to having a PC I could work much more efficentely and get shit done quick.

It's been almost a year since I've had this pc and I can't be grateful enough for everything you all have made me accomplish. Thanks to all of you for making my dream come true, and thank you for introducing me to a lovely community and one of my new favorite hobbies.

EDIT: Some are asking for the specs, so here they are.
I bought it in february 2020 more or less, all new and no refurbished.

    Ryzen 5 1600 AF 3.6 GHZ 6 core - 120~$
    Nvidia GTX 1650 4GB OC- 160~$
    Gigabyte B450M DS3H- 60~$
    EVGA 600W Silver- 30~$
    Crucial 2400 MHz (2x4GB) DDR4- 45~$
A hard drive I had laying around in my house.
A case my workplace threw out.
    Total = Roughly 450$

I just now bought another 2 sticks of 4GB and it works fucking marvelous. Really happy with the build, although looking back I would have opted for a better GPU since I'm having some performance issues with newer games.

How to get an AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT on launch day - Newegg.com

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 07:32 AM PST

Hi everyone! I've noticed a lot of people were having issues getting a card when specific restock times are announced (e.g. Newegg has been announcing restock @ 4:00 PM PST very often) on their computer, so I wanted to share a few tips on getting a card when you KNOW the time it restocks.

The Tip People Most Likely Know

Get a source that has notifications for Newegg when it comes into stock, a good guide shared by /u/illusi8n shows exactly where to get notifications, and a few checkout tips that make a huge difference. Sometimes the Discord notification groups will have the early links to the product listings, so I highly recommend checking out the guide:

Click here for guide (Google Docs)

    Disabling Cache on Chrome

The reason why sometimes you refresh and don't see the add to cart button is because the webpage is still cached in your browser. To disable this in Chrome, see here: https://stackoverflow.com/a/7000899

There are also extensions that reload webpages with no cache at all, and those are good too, but Chrome DevTools already has everything you need.

    Disabling Cache on other browsers

There are many other ways to disable cache on other browsers, I would recommend googling "Disable cache permanently INSERT BROWSER NAME"

With the cache disabled, you should see changes on Newegg whenever it goes live.

What To Search For @ Tues 6:00 AM PST (launch time)

When the listings go live, it will generally show up under GPU > Radeon RX 6000 Series. Link here: https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?N=100007709%20601359511

I would recommend refreshing this 30 seconds before launch every few seconds, but don't do it too much or you will get blocked, especially since Newegg seemed to have implemented more aggressive "bot detection" recently.

If you have any more tips, please share them in the comments below. Hope this helps, and best of luck to everyone trying to get a 6900 XT at launch!

9700k vs 3600 for a NON gaming computer?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 08:49 AM PST

I normally build gaming computers, but a friend of mine is looking to get a build for workstation, light CAD and design apps.

I can get the 9700k for the same price as the 3600 at my local microcenter, $199. Again, gaming is NOT the focus and since I'm not well versed for machines like that was wondering what the community would suggest? Will probably be paired with a 1650~

Edit: Also can get the 10400 for $159 at 6c/12t

    Thanks!

    450 watts enough for a Ryzen 7 2700x and Rtx 2060?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 11:58 AM PST

I've looked this up and some say yes and some say no so can anyone offer some insight? I'm going for an ITX build and there's a huge jump in price from a 450W psu to a 500W+ PSU So if I can get the 450W I rather save the money and get that one

Heard a robot voice coming out of my speakers

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 08:47 PM PST

Hi all, I'm a bit creeped out right now. I just heard a random text to speech voice from my speakers. It said "Head security says: Hi everyone" then "Head security says: emoji kek", as if it was talking in some kind of chat room. After that it kept repeating similar but slightly different phrases that I can't quite recall, something about 'head security' or someone asking some kind of trivia related question about media and an actor I've never heard of. I do not remember the exact question.

At first I thought I'd left a stream or other browser running, so I closed all of them. Still heard it, so I closed Discord, Steam, ran task manager to see if there was anything funky running on my PC, could still hear it after that. Finally I ran my anti virus software, it came up with 28 potentially dangerous files, so I quarantined them and restarted my PC.

I'm still a bit freaked out, and I can now hear a very faint popping sound coming from my speakers which I am 99% sure wasn't there before. Probably not related and my speakers are just going bad but I thought that was also worth bringing up. Anyone have any explanation as to what this was?

UPDATE: The cause was most likely Discord text to speech bugging out. This was something someone suggested earlier but I wasn't sure because when I tested it the voice was female, while the unknown voice was male. But I only tested the browser version. I just tested the app version, and yup, it's the exact same male voice I heard before. I also had my settings on the app set to minimize on close, which is why I was still hearing the voice even after closing the app.

I did a couple more virus scans and came up empty, and nothing suspicious has happened since I posted this. I have no idea why text-to-speech turned on by itself, but I think the mystery is solved.

First time builder needing some guidance

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 08:49 AM PST

Just a preface I have owned a pc before and I know enough to get by just could use some more expert help.

I'm in process of building my own pc. I'm currently collecting parts as I'm not in a big rush and have a sizeable budget over time.

Right now I'm working on these questions I could use some help with:

    1. I purchased an RTX 3060ti FE and I'm trying to think through what would be a good cpu. Right now I'm looking at ryzen 7 3800xt 8-core.

Q1: is there a chance my cpu might bottle neck on 1080p gaming? I play mostly competitive fps. Would an i9 be better?

    1. Not sure what would be the best MOBO for these two components that can take the new gen gpu with a last gen cpu.

Q2: just looking for suggestions on this one or advice on how to choose

Thanks for any help I appreciate it!

Noob question - Is there a difference between a processor “OPN Tray” and “OPN PIB”?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 08:05 AM PST

    Processor question:

I received my AMD Ryzen 7 2700X processor. On the box, it has the following part number: YD270XBGAFBOX. On the side of the box is a window where you can view the processor. The processor part number is: YD270XBGM88AF.

I looked up both, and on AMD's website , it listed one as a OPN PIB and one as an OPN Tray. Is there a difference between the two? Is it the same processor? Might be a noob question...

First time working on PC. New 5600x, 3060ti, cooler, and m2 SSD. Everything worked!

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 01:54 PM PST

I bought this PC a while back, but basically all the work had already been done. Upgrading to the 5600x and 3060ti was the first time I actually got in and worked on it. Also installed a new SSD and CM cooler while I was in there. Had a ton of fun. Want to build one from scratch now!

    RX 6800XT + 240Hz 1080p monitor.

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 12:00 PM PST

I have very specific taste, I love high FPS, the difference between 144FPS and 240FPS is massive for me and I'm aiming for very high FPS. I'm planning to get RX 6800XT/RTX 3080 for my Ryzen 5 5600x. I saw in benchmarks, that this combo would not be overkill for my needs in 1080p. So I have 2 options:

    • 240Hz 1080p monitor for 325$ (there are cheaper, but I want a better screen quality)

    • 240Hz 1440p for 750$

I would be capable of running some competetive games in 240FPS 1440p. Higher resolution would be useful itself, but is it worth 425$?

    Upgrading to an SSD

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 02:32 PM PST

Thanks in advance for reading! I want to surprise my SO by upgrading his desktop to an SSD (not just buying it, but also installing it). He's mentioned it before but never got around to it. Since he's a delivery worker, he's super busy right now so I thought I'd do it!

I've done a little research, but tbh I don't know much. He has a Sabertooth Z77 build that he built some years back. I think the primary HDD is 1tb and the 2nd one is 4tb. So I plan on replacing the primary with an SSD. I already bought a Samsung EVO 860 1tb SATA SSD since I thought it was a decent deal and on a completed builds page I saw it feature a similar one (hope it's compatible!). I read something about ssd not running optimally when storage is nearly full, so I guess I'm wondering what type of files/programs I should be moving over from the old 1tb to the 4tb before cloning onto the new 1tb?

I want to install it without him knowing until I've finished. I've watched some videos but I think I'm gonna follow this one since he talks to my audience (newbie haha). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbS6KiAJ868 From what I've researched so far, this is what I know/plan to do:

    • De-staticize (is this even a word) myself
    • Clean the inside with compressed air, I may remove the fans and clean those too (it's pretty dusty in there... I imagine someone cringing from this haha)
    • Connect new ssd using sata cable into the sata 6gbs and power cable
    • Clone files onto new ssd using samsung software (this is based on the video I linked above, but I've read lots of articles talking about backing up files and downloading a bootable copy of windows and reinstalling it? It just seems easier to clone the files, is there anything bad/wrong about this?)
    • Turn off pc
    • Unplug the old hdd
    • Reboot with new ssd and hope it works lol (this is the step I'm scared of)
    • Mount into one of the bays
    • Cry if it doesn't work

Sorry I have so many questions, I just want to do it right! I would love any advice/tips/concerns on any of the above. Thanks in advance.

I was wondering if xfx graphics cards are any good? Thinking about maybe getting an XFX RX 600 XT for $330. Just wanted to know of the XFX brand was any good. I was going to get an MSI Nvidia 1660 TI for the same price, but dell delayed my delivery until next month and I'm getting impatient.

Fresh PC build keeps booting to bios?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 12:09 PM PST

Hey guys, I finished putting my pc together and started it up. Starts and runs no problem, however it always opens to bios and when I try to leave bios, it just opens bios again; I cannot get past the bios menu!

I have a MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK motherboard with the "ez debug light" section, the BOOT light is on. I've tried reconnecting basically every connection and even tried a couple different wires, but no luck. All components are being read correctly in bios aswell, my boot priority has UEFI hard disk as first.

Do you guys have any suggestions? I'm not really sure what the issue could be as this is the first time im building a computer. My SSD, PSU, and GPU are from my old pc, everything else is new.

    New PC Build

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 12:20 AM PST

All of my games do not feel as smooth as I expected.

    My specs:

    AMD Ryzen 5 3600XT 6-Core Processor 4.38 GHz,

    16 GB RAM 3600MHz

    GeForce GTX 1660ti 6gb GPU

    x570 motherboard

    1TB SSD

    750W power supply

    144hz monitor using display cable

Call of duty Cold war will run 90-130 fps on medium settings.

Squad 50-50 Runs anywhere between 60-100 fps on Ultra settings.

Assassins Creed Valhalla has been my biggest issue, dropping down to 40fps at times on medium settings.

I also noticed the latest Nvidia graphics driver had a negative effect on squad, it would not run anything higher than 60 fps. I did not have this issue on the older driver.

I just made the switch to PC, and to be honest I expected more. I have the latest drivers and latest version of Windows 10. Any advice?
