    Simple Questions - December 06, 2020

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 04:10 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Is the difference between an 80+ gold PSU and an 80+ bronze PSU really worth the difference in price?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 07:40 AM PST

I'm assuming it is, but could anyone dumb it down for me and explain why!

    Much appreciated!

Edit: could anyone recommend a reliable 750 watt PSU for less than £100? Thanks

    So very sad right now...

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 07:33 AM PST

    First time builder here.

'Don't build a PC right now' they said. But what do they know I said to myself... It's only an entire subreddit solely dedicated to building computers! Blinded by my hubris I ordered all my parts, most for above market value. Thankfully though they have all since arrived! Except of course my GPU... whose order has now been canceled by the seller. Looks like I'll be spending $1200 on a 1660 super instead! /s

I was hoping to have everything put together by the 10th, but that's pretty much impossible at this point... *sigh*.

    /rant

UPDATE: Somehow found a 1660ti at a decent price and pulled the trigger. Will look to upgrade when its practical. Thanks everyone for your suggestions - I really appreciate it!

Built a PC for my Son and his Bday

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 09:37 AM PST

Well we did it. I researched and searched around for deals on Black Friday and cyber Monday. I maybe spent $800 on this with all the deals. We plan to upgrade the graphics card to a new NVIDIA when we can find them and I will use this 5500xt on my cheap one for the family. Took us maybe 5hrs plus some because we have been tweaking things. It was a blast!

    Warning about buying from Newegg

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 10:51 AM PST

A heads up about buying from Newegg. If you have bought an item and decide to cancel it, they do not have that option available. Doesn't matter if you haven't been invoiced yet, and according to them, once you have been invoiced they definitely can't do anything.

I ordered a case the 4th, attempted to cancel the 5th after being charged but before an invoice was sent. The only option was to go through a return process for an item that had not shipped yet at my expense. The invoice came about half an hour after trying to cancel. After getting an invoice and calling their customer service the options available were to receive the case and ship back to them out of my pocket or deny the package when UPS dropped it off.

Eventually someone agreed to send me a free return label but only after I receive the case, or to try and recall the order which is not guaranteed to work according to them. This has been escalated to my card issuer, but Newegg still has the charge pending which prevents me from disputing it.

All for an item that hasn't shipped, or even been set aside by their warehouse yet.

TL;DR Newegg doesn't cancel orders, only does returns. If you're lucky it will be at their expense.

What GPU should I buy for some 1080p 60fps gaming?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 07:49 AM PST

See title. I've recently returned to gaming and noticed my faithful GTX 970 from several years back just doesn't cut it anymore with modern games. I've got a i5 6600k, I'm not sure if that'll create a bottleneck or anything like that. Looking for a GPU that will last me a few years preferably. Thanks in advance :)

Computer illiterate wife wants to surprise husband for Christmas

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 08:11 AM PST

Several years before we even started dating, my husband built his set up. He was very proud of it but it was starting to be outdated. Then almost 2 years ago we had a house fire. The computer is technically ok but has some soot throughout the inside. Plus we lost the power cords in the process. He has commented about fixing it several times but has never touched it. I'm sure he is overwhelmed. So for almost 2 years it has sat on his desk and he hasn't been able to game with his friends. I have absolutely no idea how, but I was hoping I could do something to get him started. I know he was hoping to save the case, but I'm assuming most the parts need to be replaced. Basically are there a couple of parts I can buy that would get him excited to rebuild as a surprise? Or do you have to buy everything all at once so it works together? How do I find/buy the right power cords? Christmas, our wedding anniversary, and his birthday and all within 2 weeks. I've got a decent sized budget and want to spoil him. What is the computer version of getting a PS5 for Christmas? I would really appreciate any suggestions!

Should I get a better monitor for a 570 card?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 11:12 AM PST

My son wants a 144 hz monitor for Christmas, and I'm wondering if his video card can run fast enough to make it worthwhile (his current monitor is 75hz/ 5ms response). I can't swing a card and a monitor for Christmas, but he would prefer the monitor.

The graphics card is an XFX Radeon RX 570 RD 4GB XXX, running on a Ryzen 5 3600, B-450F mobo, 32g RAM.

I'm kicking myself for not thinking of this on Black Friday when everything was on sale, so if anyone knows of a decent monitor in the $150 or less range, I will be grateful.

What are good, 1440p 144hz monitors for around 300-600€

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 05:22 AM PST

Hey! Looking for a new 1440p main monitor, to replace my current, 1080p, 144hz TN monitor. I want a clearer image, better viewing angles, colours and overall look in images, movies and games. I also want it to be 144hz and low response time (for fast paced games, like csgo).

Those are my main "requirements" for it. A curved screen is of course a bonus, but if it adds too much to the cost, I'm totally willing to let it go. My budget is around 300-600€ and I have a GTX 1080, I7-6800k, which will be enough to run older AAA titles and make use of the 144hz.

TL:DR Requirements: -1440p -144hz -Low response time for FPS games (csgo) -IPS(or VA if as good) -300-600€

    Bonus: -Curved

    4k 60FPS / VR build help

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 04:48 AM PST

Hi all, I was thinking of building my own PC. I have never done it before. I was thinking to create a list for reference and slowly try to get all the parts, probably the 3080 being the last one.

I have three goals in mind: gaming with maxed out settings in VR and 4k/60FPS, and for the build to be future-proof.

Would you evaluate the parts I've chosen, give any advice on any cuts or upgrades that would benefit my wallet/the goals? Any critique is welcome. Thanks :)

    edit:

Thank you all for your good advice. I will keep 5800 because I want to change things as little as possible and for hobbyist VR/Unity development once I get all this + some goggles, hopefully, little bit more power. 570 vs 550 is just 40 pounds diff, for some extra powerful slots, after all, I will stick to 570. Will go with different (than above) 4x ram sticks, will add case fans, also will get Meshify v2. I am yet considering 750W vs 850W as there were some mixed opinions. Will swap to non-founders edition 3080.

All the help was really valuable. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Desperately needed a new PC, so here's my first build!

My laptop is literally falling apart. I would've preferred to wait until sometime next year, but it is what it is. I think I did ok with the price, especially considering the general markup on PC components here in South Korea. I lucked out with the CPU. It happened to be in stock when I was buying everything, so I jumped on it with the last of my cash. Haven't seen it since. (Edit: I still see it for sale, but not sure about those retailers.) I went with the stock AMD cooler for now, since another wasn't in my budget. Temps aren't bad, though, so it works out.

Motherboard was DOA, but I had no idea. Hours of building carefully and slowly and I got no boot, no POST. I built my PC on stream and the kind folks in chat helped me troubleshoot for a few hours. Nothing worked and my last computer was a laptop so I couldn't even check the components one-by-one. I wound up getting a repair shop to take a look and they said everything looked good, but the motherboard was dead. They handled the part replacement and everything for $65.

The RAM was essentially free since I had a gift card to use. The case was a super cheap Korean brand and included 6 fans, so that also saved me money. Going full modular on the PSU was a good, if pricey, idea because there wasn't much room in the back of the case for unnecessary wires.

I'm a casual gamer and really only wanted to be able to run the Witcher 3, at the very least. My laptop was a 5 year old MSI MS-16GH running a GTX 950M. Literally anything would've been a massive upgrade. Nvidia's GTX 20 series is pretty much impossible to find here right now, so I think the Radeon RX 5600 XT was a good purchase.

All in all...a stressful, but informative experience. The most gratifying thing was the fast boot time; having gone from HDD all my life to SSD for the first time. I might expand the storage a bit more eventually, but I'm good for now. I think the next build will be much faster now that I know what I'm doing. Still fun, though!

    Background

So back in early November-ish my friend built a brand new PC. Before you ask, no he didn't play around with BIOS, yes he downloaded drivers for the CPU/GPU. No there have not been temp issues, he's constantly had NZXT CAM opened and the temps have been excellent. The parts list is here:

    Initial Problem

About 3 hours into usage, the screen went black and the computer seemed to stop functioning, but RGB stayed on its presets and the fans continued to spin for minutes until the computer was manually shut down. When this occurred, he decided to play it off and see if it was just a one-time thing.

    Nope.

    Troubleshooting

That same night he asked around and he had a Discord DM with someone who said that it was most likely a Motherboard issue, so he tested this by getting a replacement from Amazon. Same issue continued with the replacement. In the sequence of rebuilding the PC with the new motherboard, he reapplied thermal paste just for assurance,

Lets just say, new motherboard didn't do shit. Oh well.

At this point, he's very upset. I think most of us would be as well. Poor guy has spent more time troubleshooting than playing actual games on his brand new PC which he saved for. So he decided to bring it to his local store (which I can confirm through research is trustworthy for even higher grade computers) for a diagnostic. $90 and 1 week later he got the computer back, and they couldn't find the issue. They said that they let it "run" for 4 days. I don't think that really matters. They were probably running it on the desktop screen, but I'm not going to judge them out of speculation so what ever. While sitting in a Discord call and was just thinking about it I asked him how it was being plugged in. He said into a shitty extension cord. Well that must be it! Right?

    No.

He tried the wall. No luck. He tried another outlet. No luck. Another damn floor of the house. No luck again. Then he got a restart, and when the PC booted back up, it said that it was an issue with the RAM. So since he had two sticks, he tried doing one stick at a time. Both were a failure. So that wasn't it.

Since then, we haven't tried anything more. It restarted again and now it doesn't connect to the internet (it may be a wireless adapter driver issue though). He's taking it back to that shop again tomorrow.

    TL;DR

Issue What we are almost certain isn't the problem Parts list is up there \)
PC randomly restarts or freezes. The motherboard, the RAM.

    Anyone got anything?

    GPU & CPU shortage Europe?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 10:03 AM PST

I've begun to build my first PC from scratch since early September 2020. Currently I have all the parts I want except the main ones. I don't have a cpu (AMD Ryzen 3 3300X) because it's been out of stock and I don't have a gpu (Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Super) because it's also been out of stock since I looked into it. Does anyone know an estimate of when these items may be back in stock?

    External Optical Drive?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 09:52 AM PST

I am getting up the courage to build a new computer, but I have so many questions. One thing I noticed is that new cases now come with lots of pre-installed fans which is great. But I haven't noticed any designated space for an optical drive. My current case has a flip-down panel that opens when the tray opens. The cases I see don't seem to have anything like that, or have fans on the interior front. I have a lot of legacy software which I would like the ability to access, even if it is once in a while. I use digital software as well, but wouldn't want to buy all those old games again digitally. A friend suggested I just buy an external drive to use as needed. Is it just that simple? Will the auto installers work like normal? Is there a specific model I should look for? Is there one that will cover all my bases? Thanks for any help!
