    Simple Questions - November 26, 2020

    Posted: 26 Nov 2020 04:08 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

My First PC, thank you r/buildapc

    Posted: 26 Nov 2020 02:25 AM PST

Hey guys! Long time lurker here, and I just wanted to share my first ever PC build.

Just really proud of it and I never thought I'd make it. I lost two jobs over the past year and didn't really think I'd be able to finish this build.

Anyway, here are the photos: https://imgur.com/gallery/VglxSSG

Thank you again for all knowledge I gathered lurking, and much love to all of you here at r/buildapc!

    Specs:

R5 3600XT (bought on sale for the price of a 3600)

    IDCooling Zoomflow 240x

    B550M Aorus Pro

    16GB Trident Z Neo 3600

    500GB Aorus NVME

Gigabyte RTX3070 Vision (got lucky on launch day, good thing Newegg ships to Philippines!)

    Cooler Master MWE Gold 750W

    Darkflash DLM21 Mesh

If there's anything I'd change, I would've went with the ASrock X570M just so my GPU is a little higher, but the temps are fine anyway :)

    1440 144hz monitor for 3070

    Posted: 26 Nov 2020 08:44 AM PST

Hello all, looking for suggestions on what 1440p 144hz monitor to get. Preferably in the mid 300 to high 200 range. My current build includes Asus KO RTX 3070, Intel i7-9700k. Having trouble deciding between VA and IPS. I've seen lots of reviews where IPS glow forced people to make returns/exchanges. I don't really play FPS besides valorant or Overwatch. I would mostly be focusing on single player RPGs (cyberpunk/AC). Currently playing on a 1080p 144hz AOC.

EDIT: Thank you so much everyone for the replies. I've been reading through them all, and starting to narrow down my options! :)

Why are there so many 144Hz screens?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2020 01:42 PM PST

    Apologies if wrong subreddit.

Loving my new 144Hz monitor but it had me wondering - what made all these manufacturers settle on 144? It's 24Hz times 6, right? That's the only reasonable multiple I can think of. But why settle at 144 and 165 instead of something higher or lower?

    Ryzen 7 5800X without GPU

    Posted: 26 Nov 2020 11:35 AM PST

Hey all! I managed to get my hands on a Ryzen 7 5800X cpu for my first build, but I still can't get ahold of a GPU for it. I figured I could still at least set up the computer, get it running and start installing software, but now I'm not sure if that's the case. From what I understand, the Ryzen 5000 series doesn't have integrated graphics, so does that mean without a GPU installed, I won't be able to actually use the computer?

Also, not sure if integrated graphics come from the CPU or the motherboard, but my motherboard is an ASUS Prime X570-Pro, fwiw

Saving for an rtx 3070 or should I wait for the release of the rtx3060ti?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2020 12:21 PM PST

So currently I have an rtx 2060 and I've been wanting to upgrade. The question is, should I save up for a 3070 or should I wait for the release of the 3060ti which is apparently going to be faster than the 3070 as the 2060ti was to the 2070?

Okay so I just built everything and fixed a new HDMI but the screen is just black, every external power source is plugged well.

On startup all fans and lightning is running but I get a red signal on the motherboard for 5 seconds with a beep. It is just above the power cables on the Motherboard.

    Build help - 3070/5600x

    Posted: 26 Nov 2020 06:49 AM PST

    Hello there.

Purpose - my current computer had its 10th birthday last april, and is in drastic need of an upgrade. New one will be used both as a general working-from-home desktop, as well as for gaming. I don't play online much, so i'm not worried about maxing out FPS, I just want some nice looking graphics will playing Cyberpunk/Minecraft (RTX on!) and AoE4. But it will be nice to get back to playing AAA games on PC, which I haven't done in quiet a few years. I do a bit of programming/super heavy excel (inc clunky VBA code) usage, but not streaming or video editing.

I'm also looking for this to last a fair few years. If I can get ~7/8 years out of it with maybe some more ram and one gpu upgrade I'll be happy.

Currently I'm just running two 1080p 22" monitors, but I will look at getting either a 27" 144hz 1440 one (to run with one of the 22"), or replace both of them with a 34" ultrawide 144hz 3440x1440

I have just managed to snag a 3070 FE, so i have that on the way already. I'll also use my current 1tb HDD as another storage drive

    Questions:

Motherboards - I wanted one with built in wifi and bluetooth, Given the only card I need in is the GPU, and that the mortar then has a second m.2 slot as well as 4 ram slots so I can expand to 32gb in the future, this one seems fine over going ATX, but is only B550. Should I be spending 60% more to get the x570 tomahawk? (https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/WKdrxr/msi-mag-x570-tomahawk-wifi-atx-am4-motherboard-mag-x570-tomahawk-wifi)

Case - obviously needs changing if I go ATX, but otherwise does this likely have sufficient air flow (I realise I need to get some fans) for the system above. as far as i can tell the 3070 should fit in here.

PSU - In terms of future proofing a system that I would like to last years (possibly GPU swam and RAM additions aside) is it worth getting the 850w Corsair instead for £7 more? I would assume you don't generally want a bigger PSU than your system needs and that a 750w is more than sufficient.

M.2 - I don't really understand the M.2 different versions, though most seem to be M.2-2280 so I think its all good. Is there any reason to go with a £126.50 Samsung 970 evo over the Crucial P1? That £35 extra seems a big difference.

    Thanks!

edit: oh one last thing, is there any particular reason to jump straight in at 32gb (2x16), rather than get 16gb (2x8)now and another 16gb in the future if needed?

Checking if my parts are compatible

    Posted: 26 Nov 2020 12:24 PM PST

This is my first time building a pc, i have done research about the different sizes and stuff but im still very confused, and i just want to make sure i'm doing it correctly.

I plan on using this pc for gaming and maybe school work. 100 FPS is good enough for games like fortnite, valorant, etc. and i plan on getting a 144hz monitor to go with it. Also, for the CPU it comes a cooler and I'm wondering if this cooler will be okay and if i need to get another one.

    Here are the parts:

    graphics card (gpu) https://www.amazon.ca/MSI-Radeon-RX-5600-XT/dp/B08CKDLN91/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=rx%2B5600&qid=1606385097&s=electronics&sr=1-2&th=1

How reliable are SSDs in comparison to flash drives or SD cards?

    Posted: 26 Nov 2020 11:11 AM PST

I've had SD cards and flash drives corrupt many times, even though I always properly eject them. In terms of storing files (not running an OS), are SSDs just as unreliable as flash drives or SD cards?

    Just curious, thanks.

Computer boots then shuts down after sometime

    Posted: 26 Nov 2020 12:43 PM PST

Hey, so i planned on changing my intel cpu and motherboard for a Ryzen 3 3100 and a A320M-A Pro from MSI. So i did all the unmounting and mounting and the front panel headers connecting, cpu fan(came with Thermal paste on the cpu side) and power, the 24 pin cable, usb 2/3, audio and sata connecters by myself by watching videos to help me figure it all out. And when i finished putting everything together and booted the pc,and it turned off few seconds later! Then i tried turning off the power switch and then on and waiting for couple minutes then booting the pc, it booted succesfully and the pc recognized the OS ,the motherboard brand, CPU and the Ram,but as soon as i got in the desktop it decided to shut down again. My current setup : CPU: Ryzen 3 3100 with the regular amd fan that came with it Mobo: MSI A320M-A PRO GPU: R9 380 2G ARMOR 2X MSI RAM: 8GB BALLISTIX CRUCIAL 3000mhz PSU icon ATX12V 580W 120GB ADATA SU650 SSD with windows 10 on it and an old 1TB TOSHIBA HDD Im thinking its an issue related to the PSU not being able to deliver enough power (it's an old one i got 6 years ago when i first built my computer)but what do i really know. What do you guys think ?

I've thought about getting the 2080 super because I live in Russia and there are no 2070's in stock and 30 series is sold out so I've thought why not get the 2080 it will still give really good performance especially with a i7 10700k right ?

Tingly feeling on arm/leg side that computer is on.

    Posted: 25 Nov 2020 06:29 PM PST

    Troubleshooting Help:

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

So I recently built a new computer to replace my aging one and while it's under load, I've been getting a strange tingling feeling on my left arm/leg, the side the computer is on. I don't think it's my power socket because my old computer didn't have this issue and I'm not really sure how I'd go about fixing this. I made sure there's no wires touching the back of the motherboard, any ideas what could be causing this?

It doesn't hurt or anything but it's just annoying having a tingling feeling in your arm/leg, and it disappears when the computer is not under load.

Ryzen 3700X or 5600X (or wait for 5700X)

    Posted: 26 Nov 2020 01:00 PM PST

Hey guys, idk what to do, im trying to build my PC (first one) and ideally I would have a 5600x in it. I thought I would be able to get one by now, but no luck. Im considering just buying a 3700X right now ($280) and then waiting till I can get a 5600X. Im going back to school for 3 weeks and all my PC parts will be home, so I could wait and try to get a 5600X by then, or I can just use the 3700X until the 5700X comes out (hopefully). Thoughts?

Help requested building a PC! First time builder in need of assistance :0

    Posted: 26 Nov 2020 11:16 AM PST

So I posted this yesterday on the subreddit, and got some replies, but decided to repost my earlier submission, in the hopes of getting more feedback this time around :))

The situation is: I'm building my first custom PC, and i need some help regarding my current choice of components. As the title suggests, I haven't build any PCs before, but I have been trying to wrap my head around what's good and what's bad the past month. Ideally, I'm trying to build a PC that has great performance and longevity, so I don't feel like having to change parts every time a new title launches, just to keep the same level of performance.

I'm pretty set on buying the RTX 3070, so I won't change that part. I've also been trying to make my parts match the same theme as well i could (white winter-ish theme), but if some parts of different color makes a lot more sense, or if the parts obviously don't fit, I'm not gonna let color stop overall performance as I possess common sense, at least to some degree :]

I've listed my current draft for a build below without prices, as I won't shop from American vendors (Btw, I'm trying to keep my budget to what would translate to around 2000 USD, and my current build is around 2250 USD). ALL HELP/CRITIQUE OF MY CURRENT BUILD IS WELCOMED!!
