This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Wait for Ryzen 5 5600x or buy 3700x

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 10:58 AM PST

I managed to get my hands on an RTX 3070 and I bought all the parts besides the processor. I made the mistake of preordering a Ryzen 5 5600x from B&H and from what I've seen, it looks like my order won't be fulfilled for a long time.

Now I'll be playing at 1080p until around Christmas and then I'll be able to upgrade to a 1440p monitor, so should I just cancel the order and buy a 3700x instead? Or should I wait for the 5600x to come in stock again?

Important Advice for a First Time PC Builder

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 05:40 PM PST

This community = good. It helped me tons in building my first PC, and then my second. So I must give something back to this beautiful community.

Advice: (forget RGB for this guide, let's talk hardware only)

    1. Start every build based on the monitor(s) you wish to game on. So what screen size and resolution are you targeting, how about refresh rate? This will drive the rest of the build and ensure you are not overspending or underspending.
    2. CPU: For gaming you don't need 12 cores, most games only receive performance enhancements up to 8 cores. However, futureproofing should be a big focus, and the future of games is headed towards more core utilization. It might not hurt to spend big on a CPU right out of the gate.
    3. GPU: With features like GeForce Now you can actually get away without a GPU and still game 60FPS in 1080P on AAA titles. However, most gamers would opt for a decent GPU. Futureproofing is even more important when it comes to GPU, and again here, spending more out of the gate will serve you best in the long-term. A GPU with an incredible stock cooling solution and large heatsinks will always fare well with a gaming rig.
    4. RAM: Do your research, obviously DDR4 is the new standard. But what about speeds? 3000mHz? 3800mHz? Depends.. Many benchmarks have proven that only rarely does 3800mHz outperform 3600mHz, and in some cases we see 3600 outperforming 3800. So go for bang for your buck when it comes to RAM, but always remember, if you have a Ryzen CPU, 3600 mHz should be a minimum target for maximizing cpu performance. Ryzen's "infinity fabric" flourishes with faster memory speeds. This typically = higher FPS.
    5. CPU Cooler: Water or Air? Biggest ongoing debate. With AIO's becoming more and more affordable you have to make a personal decision. Do you want a "sexier" build or do you want more money in your wallet? Noctua has air coolers that perform just as well as many AIOs out there. However, you will find most AIO's are double the price of similarly performing air coolers. Also, futureproofing.. if you plan to upgrade a CPU eventually with more cores = runs hotter, then maybe an AIO purchase now will be a good long term investment.
    6. MotherBoard: Well, this is touchy. USB 3.0, PCIE 4.0, Bluetooth, Wifi, insane VRM heatsinks... what do you really need? Well depends on your CPU choice and your GPU choice, which should have been dependent on your monitor choice and target resolution / refresh rate. The 500 series motherboards have all the bells and whistles and will futureproof you, but do you really need all that in 2020? Depends. A lot of people would opt for a 300 series, lose a few features, and still be gaming AAA titles with ease.
    7. Storage: SSD, Mechanical Drive, NVME. What do I NEED? Well, if you already bought a board that works with NVME, you obviously aren't afraid to spend big on extra features, so why not go with an NVME which is currently the fastest consumer storage available. However, SSD's are still plenty fast for gaming. Mechanical drives have aged, but I have ran AAA titles off of a mechanical drive and the only drawback here is slower loading times.
    8. Cases and Fans: So you found a shiny case with a glass panel and you are ready to buy it. Your first question should be "what is my cooling plan?" Are you opting for an air cooled CPU? Then you had better look at only high airflow cases. Are you going with an AIO CPU cooler? Then you can get away with an airflow restricted case more easily. Keep in mind, AIO's rely on the radiator staying cool and this is only achieved through great airflow in and out of the case. As a rule of thumb for any build your air pressure in should match your air pressure out. If you have 3 intake fans, plan for 3 exhaust fans. However, if you go for an AIO, you can certainly get away with 2 intake fans.
    9. PSU: DO NOT cheap out on your PSU. First of all they have long warranties, typically 8 years, and you don't want to upgrade to a more powerful CPU or GPU and find your PSU is too low wattage. The rule of thumb is get a wattage that is 20% higher than your combined power draw of all your components. Don't worry so much about the ratings: bronze, gold, platinum. Wattage is more important than the efficiency rating.

Overall, do your research. The resources on Youtube and Reddit are near infinite, from real user experience to professional benchmarking. Why spend $3000 on a build if you only plan on gaming in 1080P on a 22 inch monitor? PC PART PICKER is one of the best websites out there to plan your build. Plan it, share it, and get feedback.

Thanks for reading, feel free to comment with advice for first time builders.

First time PC builder and I wanted to drop a warning for anyone using my build!

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 11:08 PM PST

Hi! Just wanted to quickly say that if you get the B550 AM4 Bazooka motherboard and your computer case is a Phanteks Eclipse p300, you're not going to be able to hook up the case's USB 3.0 connector to your motherboard. There is not enough room since the slot on your motherboard is aiming towards the front of your case, and the p300 has a protruding part of the side of the case right next to where your 3.0 is aiming at which makes it physically impossible to plug it in without forcing it in at a weird angle and bending your pins on the motherboard!

I was able to get the pins back into place, but I'm definitely sending the P300 back and getting a different case, something that has slightly more breathing and negotiating room for a micro-ATX. It was nice that it came with the wires all zip-tied up, and I'm sure it works good for smaller builds, but it definitely doesn't like the B550 Motherboard. Totally random post, I'm brand new to this, but if you happen to know anyone getting those two products together because PC parts picker said they were compatible, redirect them to this post and tell them to get a different case. Thank you!

    8700k + a 3070/80 for 1440p 144hz?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 11:08 AM PST

So I've been thinking about upgrading next year, and I have a few questions. My current build is as follows:

    Type Part
    CPU i7 8700k
    GPU GTX 1070ti (MSI)
    PSU EVGA G2 650W
RAM Corsair Vengeance RGB pro 16gb @ 3200

I'm looking to up my monitor to a 1440p 144hz and want to save a bit of money so I was wondering what you guys think is a good step (monitor recommendations would help too I'm still looking). I was thinking I could just up my ram to 32gb, and get a 30 series card but I'm not sure how good the fps would be at high framerates using my current CPU or if my current PSU can even handle a 3070/80.

Hello all, is it possible to connect a 3pin 5v RGB product to a motherboard that only has a 4pin 12v header? Thank you

What is really lost in gaming performance between a 3700x and a 5600x?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 10:15 AM PST

I had planned on building around a 3700x with a 5600xt or a 5700xt GPU. The very day I planned on buying parts, AMD releases the new chip and with all I'm hearing, it is better at gaming while sacrificing a bit of productivity.

Is there a big enough difference to make it worth waiting for the chips to restock? My board would be a B450. Would it become obsolete soon?

Looking for a chair to mainly use for gaming

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 08:02 AM PST

I have been looking at gaming chairs and see that prices range from 50 to 1500 dollars. I dont really know what exactly to look for in them and im trying to find one that is around 150 dollars. I like the mesh back chairs because it tends to get hot in my room. Any suggestions on what chairs to look at? Any suggestions are welcome. Edit: this doesn't need to be the best for now i am just trying to replace a cheap walmart chair with zero cusion. I just need a decent chair that will last me a year or so.

    RTX 3070 8gb VRAM debate

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 05:37 AM PST

Recently I acquired an rtx 3070 gaming oc by gigabyte for 585 Euros and this question popped into my head; is this thing going to be a viable option for the next 3-5 years at 1440p? I know that there is not one answer that could solve this debate whether if it is or if it is not enough. But if anyone could further elaborate on this situation and help me to decide whether I should keep it, or I should ditch the rtx 3070 and opt for an rx 6800.

    Thank you very much!

    First time building a pc!

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 11:34 AM PST

    Hi all,

I'm looking for some adivce on some parts for a build. Links are below which were provided by a friend, as I'm quite new to this. Any advice appreciated! Basically I'm looking to keep costs down but of course get the best value for money. Apologies for any formatting problems, mods!

    https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/6qncTJ

Also, I have the option to purchase a budget CPU with built in graphics card. Just wondered if anyone thinks it'd be better? (AMD Ryzen 5 3400G Processor (4C/8T, 6 MB cache, 4.2 GHz Max Boost) with Radeon RX Vega 11 Graphics )

Upgraded CPU, now I have throttling FPS in all games.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 12:20 AM PST

    Hey all!

I upgraded my CPU from a i7 8700k to an i9 9900k. In every game I play since doing so, my FPS is going up and down like crazy and it's unplayable. I have tried a few things to try to fix this, but I am unsure what to do now. All information is below

    EDIT PC SPECS:

    CPU: i9 9900k (not overclocked)Motherboard: Z370 AsRock TaichiRam: DDR4 3200 (32GB, 4 sticks)SSD/HDD: 3 SDDs (OS on SATA SSD, games on NVME SSDs)GPU: MSI Gaming Trio 2080PSU: EVGA SuperNova G2 (80+ Gold, 750W)OS: Windows 10 (64 bit)

    -------

    I have tried;

Bios update, graphics card clean install (using DDU) , Uninstalled GeForce Experience, high performance mode under power settings, restarting the PC.

Idle temps seem to be steady-ish around 38-40c, gaming temps highest I have seen was 70c.

    --------

    EDIT#2 (Nov 7th 4:40pm)

I have tried everything that has been suggested with no prevail so far. I have decided to fresh install Windows after I re-connect all my PC parts. Will update if this fixes the problem, I hope it does.

First time build, planned for gaming at 1440p/144hz (+ monitor recommendation)

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 05:10 AM PST

Scanning multiple reddit posts I came to this and just wanted to double check if I made some unreasonable decisions. I will reuse a 1TB HDD from my old pc.

Currently I still have a 1080p monitor and looking to upgrade it to 1440p/144hz but I'm not really sure what to go for. I'm looking at either the AOC CQ32G1 or the LG 27GL850-B but am not sure if the 100€ difference is actually worth it.

I built this computer almost a year ago and having moved around a lot during the pandemic, I have noticed that my desktop has consistently gotten slower wifi speeds than my laptop or my phone . Is it just natural that desktop computers have slower wifi speeds than other devices or is something wrong with my computer? My laptop is a Microsoft Surface Book 2 if that is helpful at all. Thanks.

My PC is just starting up and clicking off after 20 seconds and repeating. Switched each RAM stick into every slot singularly. Cleared the cmos for a few minutes and put it back in. Swapped the cpu and gpu connections into the PSU, and taken out the gpu. Still no POST or visuals. My peripherals on the board (I.e fans and rgb) are working so I assume it's not that. I did the tester on the PSU and the fan didn't spin so I think it's that, but it does power on for the 20 seconds and before I connected the cpu to the PSU it would run all the fans without shutting down. But it still doesn't do the fan at all. Does anyone have any ideas or can confirm it's my PSU?

    Cores vs CPU's generation

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 12:06 PM PST

Hi im building a pc in a few months and i wanted to know if the ryzen 5 5600 is better than 7 3700x. R7 has more cores which illbe using while editing and a bit heavy gaming but even tho r5 has less cores, it belongs to the newer generation. So cpu cores more crucial than cpy's generation or the opposite? Thanks

    Am I bottle necking?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 12:01 PM PST

Hey folks I got around to putting together my 1st build about 2-3 months back and have been enjoying the hell out of it. But recently I discovered that you could use the Nvidia GeForce Experience to show you your fps. I've been gaming for about a week with this setting active now and noticed I had relatively low fps. For example: avg 25 fps on Warzone, avg 40 fps on Skyrim, avg, 30fps on Doom Eternal (campaign) When I'm at menus and loading screens my fps shoots up well over 100 but when gameplay commences fps drops well below 60. Thanks in advance to everyone with helpful advice, I really appreciate the feedback!

    My rig is as follows:

    PCU: ryzen 7 3700x

GPU asus geforce gtx 1660 super (temporary till I can get rtx3080)

    MoBo: Auros X570 Elite Wifi

    RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaw (2×16gb)

Memory: Inland Platinum SSD 2TB m.2

    PSU: EVGA 750 BQ

Case: Lian Li O11 Dynamic (Black)

Cooling: 6× Notos O120PWM RGB Fans

Monitor: HP X27i Gaming Monitor 27"

    i5-10400F vs R5 3600

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 01:33 PM PST

The i5-10400F costs 140€ ($166) and the R5 3600 costs 180€ ($213). Which one would you go far given the price difference? Would need to buy a new motherboard and RAM.

    Help with the motherboard

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 01:21 PM PST

This is my build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/83CfPV (I already have the case)

My question is can I replace the motherboard in the build with this one ?

I know that it says no "incompatibilities found" but since the first one was an ATX and the second one is a micro ATX shouldn't some things not fit since the motherboard becomes smaller

Sorry if I sound like a noob this is my first time building a PC. Thanks in advance

I want to upgrade my PC soon I don't have a certain budget in mind yet I just want to know what to upgrade first. My specs are: RX 580 Ryzen 5 1600 32 GB G.Skill Aegis 3200 mhz Msi B450m gaming plus 500 watt be quiet power 9 80+ Bronze

I'm mainly using this PC for gaming and I thought about upgrading my GPU first but I don't really know what the best decision would be. I just got Horizon Zero Dawn and would like to enjoy it at over 50 fps on high. If I upgrade I probably would spend something between 200€-400€(+ whatever I would get from the component I'm selling so probably around 100€ more).

Edit: I also could get a 1TB SSD since I currently only have 120GB SSD as a Boot drive and a 1TB HDD

    Pc BSOD errors

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 12:58 PM PST

Friend's PC keeps getting frequent BSODs, however when the PC was setup somewhere else, new cables, different monitor etc, no BSODs were had. Everything has been tried to fix the issues on the PC, so we have probably concluded its an external issue. Is there any external factors that cause a BSOD? (monitor etc..) The error codes are: Memory Management and win32kbase.sys

    Liquid Cooler vs Air Cooler

    Posted: 07 Nov 2020 10:06 AM PST

Liquide cooler cool the CPU better than an air cooler but what's about duability ?

In some posts I heard that an air cooler like Noctua are more durable than an AIO in longterm

For my future build a will use a Ryzen 9 3900xt or a 5900x (if I'm lucky) with a dualboot Windows10/Linux(Manjaro) and i will do some programming and gaming but do i really need an AIO for the long term ?

EDIT: I forgot to mention, I'm totally not a fan of any RGB things or aesthetics... I prefere functionnality and durability over the look
