    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Built a gaming rig for my dad

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 08:05 AM PDT

My dad has always loved the Flight Simulator series and got excited when the new one was coming out. He began to buy parts but quickly realized how expensive the project would be. He returned his mobo, case, ram, and offered his Ryzen 5 and 1660 card to me. I accepted them and told him how much I appreciate it. One week later I showed up to his house with all the parts I ordered to begin building.

We spent the day together (longest we've hung out in months due to covid) building the pc and I walked him through creating a steam account. As he was preparing to order FS the gift pop-up showed up telling him I had just gifted the game to him and I'll see him in the sky.

I'm so happy I'll get to spend time with him doing some we both love.

Built a PC and now my whole family thinks I know everything about computers.

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 03:46 PM PDT

Basically the title, I decided to build a gaming pc during quarantine with my dad and after a month or so of research I built it and everything works properly. However, my entire family now is under the impression that I know all about how computers work. This is not the truth AT ALL. I know where to find things in Windows settings and I know the basic function of the parts of my pc, but I still have no clue what MHz are, what motherboard specs mean, among many other things. I had to call a professional to reinstall windows for me when I got a corrupted system update. I'm by no means a computer whiz. Anyone else experienced this?

    Build Help

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 05:49 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I'm wanting to build a PC which is future proof for 1080p 144fps, potentially even 1440p if I can ever afford to stretch to a 144hz 1440p monitor.

I'm leaning towards a 2060 Super with a ryzen 3600X, would this be sufficient to run games such as Cold War at my required specs?

    Many thanks

Polarization film angle for TN LCD monitor.

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 11:56 AM PDT

Here's a strange one. I need to replace the front/top polarizing film on a Dell 1913b monitor I salvaged. However, I don't know what angle it's polarized at. I can hold a small piece of polarization film to the monitor and know that the angle is perpendicular to the film at the point no light travels though, but in terms of ordering, I've got no way to distinguish between degrees without an origin for reference.

So, when these films are marketed as 0, 45, 90 or 135 degrees, what position is that relative to? Is the origin vertical or horizontal? Also which direction is the degree? Clockwise or CCW?

Edit: man c'mon if you don't know then you don't know. That's fine but please don't downvote because I'd really like some help. Just because you can't help me doesn't mean you should downvote :(

Just built an AMD Ryzen PC

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 10:47 AM PDT

At one time I thought I would just buy someone's old PC build and be done with it. I don't see much turnover nowadays, however, so people don't seem to be building PCs as much anymore and so not much is available.

So, I forked over the dough for a new Ryzen PC, everything except the case and power supply and monitor. Cost a good chunk of change, much more than the last time I did a build.

I'm very happy I did. I even bought a new used graphics card (that there is still a lot of turnover in). And I'm still waiting for someone to recommend an application that uses the graphics card as I don't care for games.

I must say, I am so pleasantly surprised at the upgrade on many levels. The motherboard cost me, too, but it does almost everything!

    One happy upgrader here.

Build question for New RTX 3070

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 07:26 AM PDT

Hey so basically i need to upgrade my whole PC had a Gtx 970 for 4 years now and its time. I set a 1200€ max price tag and wanted to start off with a RTX 2070 Super but thankfully i waited those few weeks because the new RTX 3000 series are coming.

My Question is if a AMD Ryzen 5 3600 will be enough to support the new GPUs do i need to invest more? I heard the 3080 definetly needs a strong CPU to be able to fully make it useful. Is it also the case for the 3070?

And what Motherboard would you recommend for a 3070 build?

Its going to build the pc for the first time by myself so im no expert at all any help would be nice. thx in advance.

ATX case with good airflow that can fit the EVGA Supernova G2 850W PSU (180mm long) WITH 3.5" HDDs, plus some other questions

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 02:47 PM PDT

Hey guys. I'll be building a Zen 3 (probably a 8c/16t CPU) + RTX 3070 system soon, and I already have some components purchased, which are:

    • EVGA Supernova G2 PSU (850W)
    • A 3.5" HDD
    • 32 GB of HyperX Fury RAM
    • A NVMe SSD

And I can't decide on the case I should be using. I have many questions:

    - First and foremost, which case should I buy?

    - Should I go with an AIO or an air cooler for the CPU? If I go with an AIO, should I mount it on the front or the top? I really want my Ryzen 5700X or whatever they call it to sustain high boost clocks and not throttle.

    - Why is choosing a case so hard?

    Some cases I've considered are:

    • Meshify C. Reports on using a 180mm long PSU with the 3.5mm cage drive are mixed. Seems like a big risk, and I can't return big stuff like that easily where I live.
    • Cooler Master TD500. Seems hard to get but I'd probably be able to snatch one before I purchase the rest of the components... it's ugly as fuck, though.
    • Corsair 4000D Airflow. It's beautiful. I really love the looks, but I don't know what options it gives me in terms of AIOs.
    • Meshify S2. Seems like a bigger version of the Meshify C, which is perfect! But... it's really expensive.
    • Lian Li stuff seems impossible to get where I live.

    Thanks!

[FEEDBACK REQUEST] Video editing AND gaming $500 budget pc build. Any bottlenecks?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 09:20 AM PDT

Here is my very first pc I'm trying to build. I'll be playing games like Portal 2, Minecraft, and No Man's Sky. But my main use case is to do some light to mid video editing. Nothing 4k and super special effects. Just color correction, cutting videos, and creating scenes. I already have 2 500GB SATA HDDs. I'm planning to install the OS on the SSD, and all my video editing, gaming files on the HDDs. Is it a dumb idea or? - Any suggestions? - How's the upgrade path looking like? BTW, yes I am very tight on budget :( 520USD is max I can do, and I wanna spare the 20 bucks for a functional keyboard.

    Cheers!

GPU for a Dell Optiplex 9020 sff

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 10:41 AM PDT

Hi guys!I got a good deal on a Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF and I would appreciate a little help choosing the optimal GPU for it. I'm planning to use it for 1080p gaming.

    spec:- Intel Core i7-4770 3.4GHz (Turbo up to 3.9GHz) 8MB Cache;- 16GB DDR3;- Standard 255W PSU

Doing some research, I found some people using the GTX 1650 low profile without changing the PSU. Considering a SFF, is that some more powerful GPU that would fit in the system or is the 1650 the best i can get?

Thanks a lot for the help

Hey everyone, i hope i am at the right place here.

I´m trying to help my sister in law build a PC.

She wants to use it for her Digital Art and she wants be able to game with it, lots of Indie Games, maybe a few AAA Titles.

I am not too good at this stuff myself, so far i have:

    ASRock B450 Pro4, Mainboard

    AMD Ryzen 5 2600X, CPU

Xilence A402 Performance C Series, CPU Cooler

    G.Skill DIMM 16GB DDR4-3200 Kit

    GIGABYTE GTX 1650 OC 4G

    SilentiumPC Elementum E2 550W 80Plus EU

WD Green SSD 240GB, 1 or 2 TB HDD will be added aswell

This comes to about 570€ in total.

Can anybody help me out and say if this is a good build? Maybe some tips to switch out components to get the price down a bit more?

I appreciate any help i can get, thanks.

Can an old PSU power a more modern system?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 12:19 PM PDT

I have an old PC (12-13 years old) lying around with a 600W PSU. Mobo, GPU and RAM are so dated now it's probably not worth keeping, but I've recently upgraded my main PC with new mobo, RAM and GPU so now I'm sitting on some 4-5 year old hardware not in use. Specifically an i7 4790k, GeForce 970 and 16gb of DDR3 RAM.

TL:DR: Can a 12-13 old 600w PSU safely power my 4-5 year old leftover hardware or is this a bad idea?

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. The PSU in question is the Chieftec cft-600-14cs.

    PSU or Motherboard issue?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 01:58 PM PDT

So i've recently built my PC and when i try and turn it on it doesn't appear to post, i've tried troubleshooting by removing ram sticks and trying different slots, removing the battery on the motherboard for a few minutes and reseating my GPU and CPU to no luck. One issue that's making me question what it could be is a few seconds after i press the power button on the fans speed up and the LEDs on them flicker on and off and eventually turn back on and work normally. What i initially thought was a DOA motherboard may be a PSU issue

Need help with Gigabyte x570 Aorus Elite after almost a year of booting issues.

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 01:45 PM PDT

So I made this post about it on r/gigabyte, but I thought it was time to get more help.

To summarise, since this build a year ago, after powering on, the motherboard will not boot. Generally I will have to try a few times before it does. Fans spin, RAM lights up, motherboard lights come on. The fans will rev up, and if they do for more than a few seconds, generally it will hang there and I know it won't boot. If it quiets after a second or two, it does. After booting, the PC has no issues. Performs exactly as I want, but I want this boot issue sorted.

    Things I have tried

    • Reseating the RAM in the recommended slots, which seem to be A2 and B2.
    • Taking out the first stick, or the second, to see if it boots, sometimes, sometimes not.
    • Checked all cables are firmly attached on the board and to the GPU and CPU.
    • Jiggled cables while it's on to ascertain if it was a faulty/lost cable.
    • Replaced GPU from a 5700XT to a 2070 Super. This was recently done, but no change.
    • Switched monitors.
    • Updated the BIOS from F3, which came with the board, to F30 a few days ago, which I hoped would sort the issue. I did so from within the BIOS, not via windows update or an application.
    • Checked if XMP was enabled and using a strange DRAM profile, nope, it is disabled.
    • Enabled XMP to default profile
    • Removed CMOS battery to clear Bios
    • Took out whole PSU, all cables, then plugged everything back in again when PSU was outside case, inside but not secured, then inside, secured and with back panel on.

I thought I had managed to fix it last night. The PSU was outside the case, and the cables had been removed and plugged in again. It boot 5 times in a row. Furthermore, the rev up of the fans and subsiding occurred far quicker than usual, usually in under a second. The I removed it all again and tried it with the PSU inside the case, but not secured and with the back panel off. Got it 4 times in a row on the first try, same quick speed as before. Note that I do not have fast boot enabled.

Then today I secured everything again, and it's back to doing what it usually does. Took it all out again, tried to recreate situation from before, no dice. Got it to boot maybe a few times, but only at most twice in a row, and only quickly once. I think the Bios also reset on me one of those times.

    My Specifications:

    • Gigabyte x570 Aorus Elite
    • Gigabyte Geforce 2070 Super
    • G.Skill Trident Z 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3600mhz(though currently, with XMP disabled, on 2100mhz)
    • Corsair 750w atx power supply
    • AMD Ryzen 7 3700x 3.6ghz

    I am not overclocking anything.

I need help and at this point I don't know what else to do.

Edit: One last thing I can think of is moving the PC just before I started this investigation, and it turned off. No idea why, I assume something came loose.

    Looking to update my PC

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 12:11 PM PDT

Hi everyone! I recently became employed once again and also have recently gotten a hold of my old desktop computer as well. I originally built this computer in 2013 and I am looking to start upgrading it again. I used to play a lot of videogames but now I work as a music producer and audio engineer and would like to be able to use all of my high intensity plugins without worrying about overruns. I was mostly able to do this on my laptop before now, as I got a fairly powerful one a couple of years ago, but a dedicated production / engineering PC would definitely be beneficial and my desktop is currently not up to the task. In the future I would also like to be able to play games on it, but that's not necessarily a priority at the moment.

I have a picture of my specs here, and my case is an NZXT phantom large tower. I am fairly confident in its ability to support nearly any size of PCI-E card (including graphics cards) and motherboard. My PSU is 750W if I remember correctly.

    Things I want to upgrade:

    - RAM (needs to be at least 16 gigs but 32 would be better)

    - Motherboard (I know nothing about these anymore)

    - Processor (I would like to switch to intel, but I am open to entertaining the possibility of a modern AMD chip, given comparable speeds and quality control)

    - Storage (I would like to get an extra drive, preferably an SSD with at least 500 gigs of storage if not a terabyte)

    - Last but not least - GPU (not as important as the other things, as GPU use isn't super heavy when editing audio)

    Questions:

    - Which parts should I upgrade first, eg should I upgrade the motherboard first and start bolting parts on afterwards or would it be a good investment to get RAM first as it's cheapest?

    - For other audiophiles or producers / engineers: Is there a benefit to getting a dedicated sound card? I currently use a presonus audiobox 96 audio interface for home use, so I would need a sound card that used USB output from the PCI-E deck preferably. Related to that: do sound cards handle MIDI? Would I be able to connect my midi keyboard directly to the sound card or should I continue to route it through the audio interface if I were to get one?

    - What processor / motherboard combination would be the most beneficial for music production / clock speeds to ensure that there is no bottlenecking throughout the system?

    - Should I upgrade my PSU to 1000w or 1500w, or am I safe with a 750w?

Thanks for all the help in advance! I look forward to any advice you guys are willing to give.

Using a 10+ year old psu in a new build?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 12:04 PM PDT

In 2008 i had a pc i used till 2012, and it had a decent PSU, a coolermaster rs 520 asaaa-a1 After i dismantled that pc i put the PSU + all the modular cables back in it's box where it was kept till now 2020. between 2012 and 2020 i had another pc with a coolermaster rs-650-ACAA-D3 that was 650watts.

Now im going for a new build and am considering using either of those PSU's, but i'm not sure how responsible that is.

The calculated estimated wattage should be around 392watts for the new system. Looking at the 2008 psu, it seems is pretty prestine condition....and the befit is that it's modular, while the other is not.

I am wondering if i should try to sell the PSU's and get a new modular one, or if using either of them is still a safe choice?

for my next build i'm going for a:

    • Corsair carbide 250 air white (i bought second hand)
    • ROG STRIX Z490-G GAMING (WLAN)
    • either a: i5-10600 or a I7-10700
    • EVGA GeForce RTX 2060 KO Gaming (or perhaps a 2070 if they drop in price due the 3000 series stuff)
    • I will reuse my ARCTIC Liquid Freezer 240 74 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler from my previous system
    • Corsair vengeance 2x8ram 3200mhz
    • 2x Samsung 970 Evo 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive

Keyboard, mouse, monitor upgrades ill have to worry about later due budget limits And i'm wondering if i should wait till end november to get some nice black friday discounts.

My last pc was quite old and still had a 670 nvidea gpu and was the first one i build, till it's gpu died in 2019.

Sata cable caught on fire, what did I do wrong?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2020 12:48 PM PDT

I just bought a new PSU, motherboard, and case and once I turned on the power on the case and it kept turning on then back off very quickly so I tried rearranging the cables incase they were too tight or bent in a bad way and then after the 3rd try it stayed powered on and the sata cable going to the rgb/fan controller instantly started melting and smoking...what happened?? To clarify the sata cable attached to the power supply doesn't look to have gotten damaged at all, only part attached to the controller is what melted. Afterwords I plugged in my old power supply to everything except the rgb controller since the cable is now melted and everything else is working perfectly fine luckily. Could it have been a faulty power supply? Faulty sata cable on the rgb controller? Faulty sata cable on the power supply? Maybe I plugged something in incorrectly?
