    Simple Questions - September 17, 2020

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 05:09 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Did anyone even get a 3080?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 06:08 AM PDT

I was refreshing like a mofo, and never even got it to say "add to cart." jumped from "notify me" to "out_of_stock."

What’s the Next logical step for those who didn’t get a 3080 today.

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 07:17 AM PDT

Not sure if this will be removed, but I think it's a different conversation than talking about the launch this morning in general.

I have all the parts to build my first PC and it seems silly to get anything other than a 3000 series of GPU. At this point, for me and everyone else in my same boat, are we just kind of in a stand still time? Just wait it out and see what happens or is there another logical decision that I can make in order to complete my build?

Thanks everyone. I feel all your pain.

PlayStation announced to be $500 and I just spent $200 on a fricking power supply

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 10:38 PM PDT

This price came as a reality check to me. Should I really be spending $2k+ on a computer? Not trying to start a console vs PC debate (I've always been team PC), but this makes me question myself. I'm feeling out of touch.

Third world tax, a small rant

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 10:12 AM PDT

This is the first time in my life I really felt it and witnessed it, hardware is so expensive I feel like I'm getting ripped off, I just had to throw 1200 bucks for a freaking ryzen 5 3600 and 1660 super build. And then the cpu ended up being faulty so I had to replace it lmao, it probably was refurbished or used, shit I wish I just bought a ps5 and called it a day. Sorry I just felt the need to vent.

144hz monitor 1080p please help me.

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 01:34 PM PDT

    Hello guys,

I bought an LG 27GL650F last month and that was the worst experience of my life. I was looking a for a good 144hz monitor for games like Warzone/Modern Warfare/ Valorant...but my gosh this monitor.

I started experience some strange headaches after just 1 hrs of gameplay, plus some very stressfull eyestrain. The response time was so poor, i don't think so it was 1ms.

It was my first IPS panel and i idk if that was the reason. I refund it and now i need a new monitor...i'm not sure anymore to desire an IPS panel.

Could you suggest me the best model for response time and visibility in fps? Thanks so much!

Since I had no chance at the RTX 3080 I still need a card for my build. Is the 2060S a good stand in for a while?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 08:35 AM PDT

I'm thinking of getting a cheaper card since there was no chance in hell to get an RTX 3080. Would the 2060S be okay for a while? I still need a card because I am giving my other computer with a GTX 1070 to my kid and building a totally new rig. I guess I could always put the 2060S into that computer once I can finally get a 3080.

Is the 2060S a pretty good upgrade from a gtx 1070 you think? It's crazy GTX 1070s are still more expensive than a 2060s!

    Thanks for any help!

Do I need to wait for Ryzen 4000 and RTX 3000?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 01:06 PM PDT

Hi there, I'm planning on building a pc to use CAD (CATIA) on for one of my university courses and game on.

I was deciding between the Ryzen 7 3700x or 2700 and the RTX 2060 and GTX 1660 Super

But then I found out that the RTX 3000 cards and the Ryzen 4000 are coming out soon. Is it worth waiting for them or possibly for the price drop for the components I just listed? Or should I just get the other components now?.

Normally I would wait with something like this, but my CAD course starts on October 12. I currently only have an ultrabrook running an i5 which probably won't be sufficient for CAD.

TLDR: Is it worth it waiting for the drop of Ryzen 4000 and RTX 3000 while I need a good pc for my uni course?

First PC Build + New Setup (Before and After)

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 01:30 PM PDT

Click here for gnarly before and after: https://imgur.com/a/B8hAF0u

First off, just wanna thank this subreddit for enlightening me on most things in the PC world, Im relatively a beginner and this community helped out a lot with this build. Thanks!

It is my first build, took a long time but everything went very smoothly, was hesitant to build it at first but I am pleasantly surprised at how easy it was (with the help of youtube).

The before pic is when I was ripping shit out of my old setup so it wasn't actually that bad, but nonetheless, it was bad..

Pretty happy with the cable management, I used J-Channels, velcro straps, sticky cable clips and 3m tape squares. Took me around 3 hours to finish.

Originally was going to wait for the 3070 but uni started and had to settle for the 1660 super for now.

    Should I upgrade to 1440p?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 01:51 PM PDT

I'm currently using a 1080p 144hz monitor (24 inch) with a GTX 770. I'm looking to upgrade my GPU, and I was wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade my monitor as well to a 1440p one. However I don't have too much money to spend on this. What would you guys suggest?

I use it for gaming and to do all of my school stuff including online classes

Showing Dad well deserved rest/Relaxation HELP

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 01:44 PM PDT

Hi guys, just hoping to get some advice on building/buying something for my dad. My dad has been amazing to me my sister/mum but suffers from mental health issues. He is currently/ has been going through a severe rough patch lately. We usually meet up once a month and talk/have a meal (currently it has been over 3 months with his struggles)
I heard he has been wanting to come back soon to watch my partner play Flight Simulator 2020 as he used to use this to relax and he would stay up playing this when I was young. We were hoping to buy this for him as a collective group for his birthday/Christmas, however we don't know if his pc is good to go.
It is an older pc and we don't have much in the way of upgrading it funds but can anyone help please? (advice is really needed)

    20gb DDRR3 Ram
    windows 10 64bit (upgrade from 7)
    GTX 1050ti
    Am3 Prosessor 4 cores
he does have 128gb SSD and 4tb HDD
I don't know if this is right as I have been unable to see him for a while (no guests for now) however he would need a new case and fans and power supply
I'm trying to think of something that would help him through the tough times as he helped me growing up with all the late night hypo's and social issues (diabetic, Asperger's) I hope this sounds ok as I don't know always how to word things well.
    Many Many thanks.

Get the Corsair RMx instead of the RM if it's a very small price difference (which it is).

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 12:22 AM PDT

I keep seeing people put Corsair RM PSUs in their build. And while it's not a bad PSU, the Corsair RMx is usually only a very small amount more expensive. The RMx650 is only 2 US cents more right now than the RM650. The RMx850 is $5 more than the RM850, and the RMx750 is actually $5 CHEAPER than the RM.

So why get the RMx over the RM? Better build quality.

The RMx uses generally higher quality components. It has a more reliable fan. It uses all Japanese capacitors instead of Taiwanese capacitors. It's rated for 50 deg C instead of 40 deg C. The RM IS slightly better performing in some aspects, but not by a significant margin for most users. The main advantages the RM has over the RMx is the lack of in-cable capacitors, and support for Windows 10's Modern Standby mode, but again this is not a huge deal for most people.

Tom's Hardware's review of the RM650 summarizes the differences between the RM and RMx.

Also, don't get the EVGA Supernova G+ or G5. They perform worse than the RMx or the Seasonic Focus Plus Gold, or even the EVGA Supernova G3. And they usually aren't cheaper than those models either.

    Two other common things:

Don't get Samsung SSDs. Usually there are similar performing SSDs for much cheaper.

The H510 has mediocre to poor thermal performance. Unless you really love the look, you are better off looking for another case with better thermals.

    Need help finding ultrawide monitor.

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 01:48 PM PDT

Hi, i am planning on buying a new monitor for my pc and i need some help. Rn i have a 1080p 144hz Curved AOC 27inch monitor and i wanted to buy an ultrawide to give my setup a cleaner look since i have a dual monitor but my second monitor is an old dell 1920x1200 60hz 24inch.

My budget is around 300 dollars but it can a bit higher than that.

I found 2 myself. A 1080p 144hz 34inch Curved i think and the other one a 1440p 100hz 34 inch curved monitor. And im not sure which i should buy. But if you guys could choose for me or send me another one i could buy then i would be very gratefull. My system is a ryzen 5 3600 and an rx 590. It said it could run 60fps on games with 1440p but im not really sure. And in the future i will upgrade my gpu to rtx 3070 so it can run 1440p better.

I thank you all in regard.

Building first PC need some knowledge

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 01:47 PM PDT

I preordered to the new ASUS TUF RTX 3080 (not the OC). I understand that the card I received will not have a factory over clock like the OC version, but couldn't I just over clock it myself to the same spec? Or historically is that not something that is easily done? Or is there something that would prevent me from doing this? Thank you

Are there compatibility issues between older GPUs and modern parts?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 01:46 PM PDT

Long story short, I built a pretty mid-high end rig (Gigabyte Aorus Master x570 with a Ryzen 3700x) with the intention of sticking a 3080 RTX in there. Since those cards never actually went on sale, I needed to throw a spare GPU in to see if I'm going to need to RMA any parts.

And the GPU that went in... is an old GTX 650. To my dismay, I can't get anything on a screen with this GPU connected, but the fans are spinning, so I suppose it's powered. Just, no signal to display.

Motherboard is displaying an AE code, which is no boot device. Fine. I don't have an OS installed, that makes sense. So I can't tell if this GPU is actually an issue here. Are there any known compatibility issues between old GPUs and new hardware that would prevent the GPU from working altogether?

Some questions for my 2nd build (last one 6 years ago)

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 01:45 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

long time lurker here. After being on a budget regarding my PC for all my life, i am finally done with university and have my first full time working year behind me. As result i want to treat myself a new PC. I got lucky today and got a 3080 MSI X Trio. I am trying to balance between aesthetics and high end. I would be really happy if some of you could look through my list and have some improvements for me. I am planning on buying a 27" 165hz 1440p Monitor to play on.

    I am mainly insecure about:

Waiting for the for the Ryzen 4000 or getting a 3700x once it get into sale?

Should i got for 3200 Ram speed instead of 3600?

Will mounting my 3080 vertically be stupid?

Do i have any compatibility issues?

Thanks for everyone who takes the time to help me, i appreciate it alot.

Please excuse my poor english i am not a native speaker.

How far will a PC boot without a GPU?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 01:42 PM PDT

I am doing my first build and have a 3700x with a x570 motherboard as well as all of the other needed components... I was (stupidly) waiting to get a 3080 but obviously didn't. Switching from thermal paste to thermal pad; Cracks on AIO cooler plate

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 01:35 PM PDT

Hello. I'm deciding to switch from thermal paste to an Innovation Cooling Graphite Thermal Pad because I think that it'd be better and much easier for me. I'll be getting a 40x40mm pad for my Ryzen 7 3700X. I'm also planning on getting a 30x30mm pad for my 2080 Super. I've never taken apart a graphics card before.

My Corsair H115i AIO liquid cooler's plate is full of cracks at the edges. Is this going to pose problems for me using the thermal pad? Also, I saw an Amazon review saying that the reviewer had gotten better cooling stacking two of those thermal pads on top of each other. Is there any validity to that review? Thanks!

[Question] Building a new pc, buy Ryzen 3600 at $175 now or wait for Zen 3

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 01:31 PM PDT

I have every part for my new pc build ready except for the PSU which is coming and I haven't bought the CPU yet. I am wanting to hold on to buy the CPU because the 3600 was sitting at $200+ recently and I am waiting on a deal, it is at $175 right now. Should I hold out for three more weeks or just pull the trigger?
